5 Day Camping & Gold Prospecting Trip | Goldfields WA

- Join me on a short 5 day camping and gold prospecting trip, southeast of Mount Magnet, about 560kms north of Perth WA.
Time constraints only allowed me to be away for 5 days, but getting out in the bush and swinging my detector is something I'm always keen to do.
The weather was quite hot, reaching mid 30C each day, and the flies were their normal annoying selves....a fly net is a must.
Coming home without any yellow rocks is always a possibility, but doing our research helps to put us in the right locations for find gold.
I'm already planning my next trip, so look out for that one....as well as a couple of other videos in the pipeline, relating to modifications to the Navara.
If you're interested in the 'Gazza Pig', don't hesitate to get in touch and I'll forward your details to my friend Gary, who makes them.

That's a pretty good camping setup you have there Rusty. I like the carrier for the quad on the drawbar on the caravan. The gold is pretty elusive at times eh. Currently at Yalgoo with the Mrs and will do some detecting tomorrow. The ground further north is very wet after the recent rain, so hopefully better here 😊.
Hi Mark, the camper set up has taken a few tweaks to get it to where I want it, but really happy with it now. The goldfields has had a bit of rain lately, so that makes getting around, a bit tricky.
I hope you find some gold on this trip.
Looks like the weights they put on Alloy wheels
Yep definitely stick on wheel weights
Thanks Darren!
Appreciate the comment, Rick, thanks.
Great Video! Good filming and info, appreciate you taking the time to share your camping setup etc in addition to the gold prospecting. Id be keen to get one the "Gazza Pigs' if you can share details. All the best.
Thankyou for your kind words. If you would like to email me at rmhyde58@gmail.com I'll pass your details onto Gary, thanks.
Great advise. Thanks!
Thanks Tom, I hope you enjoyed the video.
Love that van Mate!! Thanx for the Vid
Hi Jim, here's the link to the playlist of videos for the caravan upgrade...enjoy!! ua-cam.com/play/PL_R7HSM-pm2KdxrF37xC9X5FrSw3nOUWi.html
Great video Rusty that was your trip after the chain broke on my Honda, the countryside was certainly dense, glad the Gazza pig worked well for you regards Gary
Cheers Gary...that was some trip, wasn't it.
Thanks for the vid. Ya left me Hungry for gold and a good feed .
cheers Johno
Thanks Johno...I'm hungry for gold, too...fingers crossed for a better result next time out.
Hi Rusty, Great to see you back mate. Its a wheel balancing weight someone has lost. Hopefully the next find will be yellow. Always informative and helpful.
Hi Malcolm, thanks for identifying my mystery object. Let's hope I find some yellow rocks the same weight!!
Great video mate and yes we carry most of what you have. In addition to that we carry a defibrillator in the truck as you never know who may need it, plus we live in our van full time so we have everything on hand. We had a ripper of a season last year just south of where you were but not a lot of luck this season so far but it’s early. By the way thanks for the plug it’s most appreciated. See you around the traps
Thanks Peter...never thought of a defibrillator, but you never know when one is needed. Hope you have a better season this year, just as I'm looking forward to a better one, too.
Great video 🍻
Thankyou David.
I would like a PLB , one day will get one .. I keep my car and my van in view or if I can't see it I know where it is at all times ... And yes it's hard going through the bush with caravan on the back mine is 20 foot
I believe a PLB is a 'must have' so even if you never use it, you always know that if you set it off, someone will find you....even though it won't be instantly.
Thanks for your insight on things down AU way.I hunt Northwest desert in Arizona, not quite as remote as your setting.Wish it was? But some of the same issues.Always be prepared.Cheers
Hi Guy, you can never be 'over prepared' but making sure we're not putting ourselves in danger, is the priority....irrespective of where we camp, hunt or prospect. Stay safe when you're out in the desert!
Hi Rusty , you not the only one struggling to find gold , I live in my caravan so I been out around coolgardie for bout 3 months now. I m thinking about going up cue way ..
.about safety , I have trilobite on phone so I'm tracking where I'm going . I have E10 GPS never used it. I have coden radio in my car , and I'm a member of Austravel , I send GPS location to the base and each time I do this my mum and dad get an email plus one of my mates ..also Austravel has morning and afternoon skeds ...plus I can make phone calls from my radio ...I'm also a ham radio operater as well .
Hi Christie, sometimes it can be a struggle to find gold, but the lure of finding it keeps us coming back. Thanks for the info about Austravel.
Things we carry in our pack or on our person. I carry a few things. A Silva compass. A 3lt camel back pack, knife with fire starter, a headtoarch, a power bank, solar powered, takes forever to charge, but does charge. I also carry a few of those energy squeeze packs cyclist's use. With my quad, I carry all sorts of stuff, puncture kits and ryobi plus 1 compressor. You have a really nice set up bloke. I'm totally different country to you though, darwin area.
Thanks for your insights into what you carry when out prospecting....including a couple of things I don't currently carry, so that's for commenting. I've checked your channel and subscribed, as I'm keen to see more of what you get up to in the NT.
@RustysOutbackAdventures , I've slowed down on posting, maybe do a few more this season, grass is still long!
I watched a couple of your videos....the one of you and your quadbike being towed back to camp (I'm guessing)...the grass was very long, which must make it very difficult to swing a detector in.
@RustysOutbackAdventures , that was early in the dry season and and sketchy moment! Blew a fuel hose off a badly repaired injector, lost about 20lt of petrol in about 10 minutes. Usually, the grass is fire bombed, this year it is really late, which makes it frustrating. There is some good gold here, but very sparse patches. My best is 7.5 oz nugget, and an 11 oz day, so can have so.e good ones!
You were lucky you had someone with you to tow you back to camp. My best nugget and best day in the goldfields are way less than your best day...by a long shot!!
Long time no see, been awhile, I'm sure a gold nugget is close by
Hi Louis, I need to get out more often, in order to post regular videos! I do hope there's some nuggets on the next trip.
Hi mate, I’m at Nookawarra Station, 200 km north west of Cue, I know there’s an area with gold , if you want to you can come and visit.
Hi Johan, thankyou for your kind offer....I'd love to come and take a look around. My email address is rmhyde58@gmail.com if you would like to email me, we could work out some details, thanks. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Rusty, would love to join you but will have to be next year mate, (medical issues)
I hope you get over your medical issues and back to full health soon.
@@RustysOutbackAdventures thanks mate
Try scotch fillet and, in the end, very strong cheader cheese. I think plate split with heat in the middle and cold outside. Also, i watched doug stone rake area over the detected in WA. Have you seen the victoria gold hunters.
Scotch fillet for special occasions, for sure. I've heard of prospecting raking the ground where nuggets have been found. I've watched a few episodes of Aussie Gold Hunters.
It's a self adhesive wheel balancing weight
Thanks for your comment, John.
I heard to carry emu air horn, solar, works is like a reverse led light. They have diodes. Some times the diode breaks down. Carbon. There two diodes. One a bypass for series panel connection panels. The second inline for reverse protection. Because at night the panel becomes a led light in a spectrum you can not see. If need to replace, buy big power diodes
Funny thing is, that roof mounted solar panel that I thought wasn't working, has been working just fine....I did notice it had a film of dust over it, so maybe that was causing it to not work properly.
That’s a balancing weight that sticks to a rim Instantaneous obviously the two-way sticker did not work very well
Thanks for the info, Carmine. I wonder if wheel that lost the weights, was out of balance enough for the driver to notice?
Hi Rusty, enjoy your vids. Are you going to upgrade your sat phone since Thuraya no longer have a satellite? Regards Andrew
Hey Andrew, I've gone with the Iridium GO unit, as it gives me voice and text options. When I'm at camp, I'll continue to use Starlink, so the Iridium GO unit will be in my backpack while out detecting.
Great content! Is it just my laptop playing havoc or did you have trouble with your microphone connection?
Well spotted, Glen. It looks like my gopro mic isn't working properly and I didn't realise that until I edited the video.
In the goo
Hi rusty, how have you mounted your solar on the roof of your caravan ta
Hi Jaimie, here's the link to the video of the solar panel installation onto the roof of the caravan....hope this helps. ua-cam.com/video/-Bxt66Cg1I4/v-deo.html
Do you cary asprin. If heart attack. I was a little ill. My heart thought there was no blood. So it stored fluid and made blood. I had a heart attack with not knowing. I have to get my heart zapped. The doctor said everyone should have.
Thanks for the tip about the asprin....something I don't carry.
It's under the sand
I'm guessing the bedrock in that area is a lot deeper than in other areas....the magnetic anomaly can't tell me the depth, unfortunately.
He rusty
Just for your info the Starlink app has a built in speed tester
Thanks David...I tend to forget there's one in the app, but next time out I'll check both options.
Don't we go bush to get away from that internet social media stuff?
Starlink allows me to stay in contact with my family, as well as allowing me to conduct research while out in the bush, looking for better prospecting opportunities, rather than spending time on social media.
Those sat phones don't work anymore
You're right, David...the Thuyara satellite suffered a 'force majeure' (something must have crashed into it), so I've just upgraded to the Iridium GO unit. It provides voice, text, SOS and location messages, but has limited data downloads, but I have Starlink so I don't need it for data, just the ability to call and/or text someone in an emergency.
@@RustysOutbackAdventures I was prospecting up north got the message that it was down it stopped me from going more remote bummer $16.50 a month was great I got the 9555 at $65 a month not much of a choice
Pivotel are trying their best to provide customers with options, but there didn't seem to be much on offer....it was a toss-up between the 9555 and the Iridium GO.
What you should carry, but don't, and everyone else seems to not carry either, is firewood.
You could easily have bought enough for a five day trip from a firewood supplier.
The reason why this is an issue for me, is the wood on the ground is part of the ecology/environment. It provides homes and shelter for small creatures, and when degrading it provides nutrients to plants. Collecting and burning wood is destructive. I hate seeing people with these massive bonfires that waste so much wood.
Eventually, there will be a scarcity of wood with everyone collecting it.
People go camping to enjoy it, but you are destroying what you came for.
Thanks John, you make a very interesting and valid point.
@@RustysOutbackAdventures I was wondering if I would get a reply from someone, and what it would be, as mostly, it is along the lines of telling me to get a life, or I'm a nazi, or fun police.
Thank you for being thoughtful and not abusive Rusty.
I was as guilty as anyone in my younger years, but with age and some critical thinking, I am more aware.
What detector are you using. I havd a garret ATPro & AT Max but I dont know if they will be any good in gold country. Same size van and a pajero i0. I would love to go gold hunting . Whats your thoughts cheers Andy hopeland perth. .
Hi Andrew, I'm using the Minelab GPX5000 detector with the 17" x 13" Nugget Finder Evolution coil. I also have the Minelab coils that come standard with this detector, as well as a 14" x 9" Nugget Finder Advantage and a 12" x 8" Nugget Finder Evolution coil.
I'm not familiar with the ATPro or the AT Max detector but a quick google search suggests they're used for coin hunting, relics and even gold nuggets.
@@RustysOutbackAdventures thankyou so much Max for getting back to me so quickly. Its really appreciated. I am now a subscriber. Yes i would love the minelab but unfortunately the ex got the house and I live off a Disability pension so its from pay to pay. But one day I hope to upgrade my detector to a proper gold detector. Good to also learn about all the safety tips thats appriciated too. I look forwatd to following your adventures and watching you find some big gold nuggets. I like to think positive. Its what gets me through my bad painful days. Cheers Andy. .
Another question if you need to use your PLB in case of an emergency. Do you need to pay for the police rescue or plane or helicopter in the gold fields as I have had a heart attack in the past but feel I am a lot healthier now but you never knowwhat might happen. Car. Snake. Broken bone.ect . At 59yo i am no longer young but i would be going out alone. Cheers Andy hopeland perth.
As far as I'm aware, you're not required to pay for the cost of search and rescue efforts, if you set off your PLB. Much better to be found at the location of your PLB, should you get into trouble and need rescuing, than need help and not have any way of contacting someone, only for a full scale search be launched if nobody has heard from you for a while and nobody knowing exactly where you are.
