  • This portable 12V lighting pack reduces the need for long leads run around your campsite, especially near your camp fire.
In this video I'll show you how to make this portable 12V power pack, designed to provide power for portable lights, as well as having an inbuilt light, for those times when you need to shine some light on a work area.
The lighting pack can also be used at home, when the power goes off.
Charging the lighting power pack is via a solar panel, as the pack is fitted with a solar charger.
I used the case from an old style jump starter pack that I had in the shed. Maybe the Mark II version will be made out of a different type of case/box.
Parts used in this build include:
12V 30Ah AGM battery rated at 440 Cold Cranking Amps
    Roadvision LED strip light
    2 Narva 12V cigarette outlets
    20A Narva resettable circuit breaker
    2 spade fuse holders
    12VDC digital voltmeter.

Love the repurposing of the case. I would put the +ve of the voltmeter on the load side of the isolator so you can charge it or leave it switched off in storage without the voltmeter constantly powered. A solar reg such as a PL20 or Dingo 20/20 could be used instead which would give you the battery voltage, Ah in, Ah out and low battery cut-out of loads to protect the battery in case you had too many reds around the campfire. You've got my creative juices flowing now.

Thanks for the suggestions, El Wombato....very valid points indeed. I connected the voltmeter straight across the battery so I could see the battery condition, but I'll swap it over to the load side of the isolator. As for the solar regulator, it was one that came with the portable solar panels and it's size works well on the case, but I agree, having one that gives info about charge rates, etc would be helpful.

A good handy light pack, and i guess that is up cycling as they call it. Also handy when power goes out in the house as well. Fairly cheap and easy to make.

Thanks Russell. Yes, I hadn't thought of it as a back up at home if the power went out.

Hey Russell, you won't believe it, but out power went off last night and I grabbed the lighting power pack and with it sitting on the kitchen table with just the LED light turned on, it lit up the kitchen and family room. My wife's comment...'that light is very bright'! I also used it to charge my phone overnight.
