DCR-IP1 World's Smallest Camcorder [Sony's MicroMV]
Переглядів 31714 годин тому
@WaybackRewind 08:07 Sample Footage - A viewer informed me that my DCR-PC55 was not the smallest Tape Based Camcorder but it was in fact the DCR-IP1. I didn't know that camcorder existed. At first I thought it was a PAL only model, but no there was an NTSC version. So I searched the interwebs and found one. It was listed as broken, but I bought it anyway just to have it. It's almost too small. ...

@WaybackRewind U-Matic was the World's First Video Cassette Recorder (VCR). Created for the home market in 1971 it was a dismal failure. It really depends on what kind d of connections your GPX TV has. The order I did it is the preferred order. 1) If you have HDMI use that. 2) if you have audio video use that. 3) if all you have is antenna then use that. But no matter what you have, you should be able to convert it. Thanks for watching

    I connect my Cannon ZR 45 MC (NTSC) with FireWire cable directly to Mac 10.11 and it woks perfectly. No problem to convert it to PAL. The cable I use is 9 to 4 pin FireWire. 9 on camera side, 4 goes to mac.

      When it comes to firewire macs have an advantage. Even today the thunderbolt is backward compatible, but few PCs have a thunderbolt. If I ever get a thunderbolt port I will demonstrate how it's possible. But for now I use the Pinnacle and it works beautifully on my PC. Thanks for watching.

    I remember when I was a child, my cousins had a VHS-C JVC camcorder, not that one but a lower end model, and I wanted a camcorder so bad too, so my parents bought a Sony Hi-8 one. I was happy with my new camcorder but I thought that my cousin's one was better because they could play back the tapes directly on their VCR just using the tape adapter, while we have to hook ours up to the TV and play the tape on the camera, but later I discovered that ours had better picture and sound quality and was able to record up to 2 hours per tape, while theirs only could record 30 minutes, and the tapes and camera itself were smaller and lighter, so I was glad that my parents bought a Hi-8 instead of a VHS-C.

      I made the same decision in 1991 when I bought a hi-8 camera instead of a VHS-C. The 8mm was designed to be a camcorder format. The VHS-c was kind of a compromise. Thanks for sharing.

One of them is working perfect from the start and the other not but I have left it running for about 30min and the sensor must be coming alive as the LCD is starting to show flickering so fingers crossed. @@WaybackRewind I just stated my journey with the l2 this year and would like to know, how long could my l2 last if I use it regularly? So far it’s given me mild problems like the lens having a miscommunication with the sensor and the digital effects draining the battery really fast. Will the capacitors still rot even if I use it weekly? And are there any repair men in the states that could repair it if it goes bad. I’ve had a hard time finding someone.

    • @WaybackRewind
      @WaybackRewind 2 дні тому

      Those are excellent questions. My battery drains very fast as well, even though it's only 4 years old. I need to find a solution for that. Lenses do tend to go bad, but you can maybe use the lenes from the bad ones? As for the capacitors, I don't know if there is a way to make them last longer. Maybe being in a cool place helps. As for repairs I had my A1 repaired, but that was 30 years ago. Most of the people with those skills are retired. I think you have to just accept that at some point these cameras are gone. Like the A1, none of them work at this point. Thanks for watching.

    The sample footage looks as expected, and it's interesting that there are big differences in video quality reflected in machine quality among MiniDV camcorders, for example the quality of my DXC-VX2100 3CCD MiniDV cam is far superior to my other low cost consumer grade machines. I could use a few of those DC Drive Cables - certainly a less expensive option than buying replacement batteries! In the past I've hacked old batteries by removing the old cells and ran cables from the charge/protection circuit board out to fresh Li-Ion batteries that worked well but the drive cable is a more elegant solution.

    • @WaybackRewind
      @WaybackRewind 3 дні тому

      Yes, In theory the high end 3CCD MiniDV should look far superior to the low cost consumer grade cameras. The thing I can't really understand is how bad all standard definition cameras look to me today. My 3CCD Canon XL1S doesn't really look all that good to me compared to HD. Probably has something to do with deinterlacing and how it looks on digital TVs versus interlaced footage on the old CRTs. I must figure it out one of these days. I put a link to the DC cable in the description. They are really inexpensive compared to these impossible to find batteries. Thanks for watching.

    I have a DCR-PC101 that I haven't touched for years, maybe I'll take it out for a bit of nostalgic fun tomorrow. How Sony manages to make them so small never ceases to amaze me, on the other hand I'm also afraid of the transport eating tapes like those old car cassette decks every time I use it. I like my PC101 because it has NightShot long exposure capability in video mode and a hotshoe mount for accessories. Speaking of NightShot, it's one reason why I like Sony still cameras of that era such as the DSC-F828 and DSC-V3 where I can enable IR mode with a magnet hack but shoot in normal colour mode.

    • @WaybackRewind
      @WaybackRewind 5 днів тому

      I wish I had the time to catalog all of the Sony cameras and figure out the differences. I pick and choose the most interesting ones to buy, but it seems that Sony produced innumerable permutations that don't really make sense to me. When I learned of the IP1 I had to have one. Back in 2003 people complained of the quality, but standard definition doesn't look all that great on any camera today. I hope you liked seeing this one. I am still searching for a working PC55, but they all seem to be broken. I would like a PC101 or PC100 and I have no clue what is the difference to be honest. Thanks for watching.

    • @MichaelAChang
      @MichaelAChang 5 днів тому

      @@WaybackRewind You're right, there are too many Sony camera permutations to track so I just pick units with features I want such as (super) NightShot since long exposure greatly enhances low light performance in video mode. This was the reason I bought the PC101 and VX2100. Like you, I wasn't even aware of the IP1's existence. They were all relatively expensive machine in their time and buying them today is somewhat asking for trouble because of their complex transport mechanisms, but there's no denying the nostalgic factor.

    The BVP7 camera was certainly a workhorse of the era but not really the ‘best’. The BVW400 would probably take that spot for SP analogue. Mind you the BVV5 recorder end would take 4 discrete audio inputs. You are lucky to get that on a camera even in 2024.

    • @WaybackRewind
      @WaybackRewind 7 днів тому

      I don't know if I was trying to say the BVV-5 recorder was the best ever. But Betacam SP in general was the high water mark for the 90s. I shot scenes at my nephew's wedding with this camera. Aside from being mistaken for the press, the resulting footage was disappointing. My cellphone did much better. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for your content! Super fun channel! Could you please do a comparison video between your L2 with your canon xl1s? I’m mostly curious in the differences for capturing light. It seems like the L2 is more sensitive to light and therefore can achieve higher shutter speeds in the same light compared to the XL1s. A comparison indoors and outdoors would be awesome! Cheers! :)

    • @WaybackRewind

      Thanks for the suggestion. That would be an interesting compare of Two interchangeable lens standard definition cameras. I have to deconfigure my XL1S from tapeless (which only made it worse) and look at both as they perform to tape. I appreciate the suggestion and love hearing thoughts and ideas from the viewers. Thanks for watching.

I know I just left another comment, but wanted to add another question on top of it - and of course I can't find my comment, so here I am. I wanted to ask if there is a battery included in the package on the link you have below your video here. Also, if there is a battery included, how many batteries? Is there a charger included as well? Huge thanks!

    • @WaybackRewind
      @WaybackRewind 8 днів тому

      Yes, the link I put in the video includes 2 batteries and a charger. As I show in the video, this camera uses the same battery as the HC-V180, so I have 2 Panasonic batteries, normal size, and about 3 aftermarket oversized ones. There were reports that this camera would reject aftermarket batteries, but I have not run into that issue. If you buy any let me know how it works out for you. Thanks.

      Got mine today. It's in better shape than I expected. Powered right up and door closed normally with no 32:11 error. Screen and camera seem to work normally. I haven't tried a tape yet. I want to savor the idea that it works normally before fining out otherwise. And no doubt this is smaller than the DCR PC55, I was wrong before.

      @@WaybackRewind If you do get any errors when loading a tape it will be the ribbon cables need to be reseated for sure. I have removed the broken LCD flex cable from my Ip1E and it was quite easy to do. so reseating the cables is alot easier than my PC1000 was :) I have ordered 2 x new LCD flex cables today. so will put up a video when they arrive. Will put a video today showing my work around using the FPV monitor. I also found the remote for Sony HC3 has more controls which also supports the IP1E for camera and playback and even has the record button for VTR recording from external sources.
