  • ‪@WaybackRewind‬ The JVC GR-C7U is often mistaken for the Back-to-the-Future Camcorder, but that honor belongs to the GR-C1U.
Regardless the GR-C7U is remarkable in it's own sense. The first CCD Camcorder. Ridiculously small by 1986 standards, (Only 2.9 Pounds! as it boldly states on the cover).
Compact VHS actually preceded full-sized VHS to the market, but as convenient as the adapter is, people couldn't be bothered to use it.
Despite the extreme age of these cameras I have a working one and took it to work and showed it off to several folks not even as old as the camera. The bulky size, the short recording time, even the blurry black & white viewfinder, (called blurry blue) was a complete mystery to them. Still this camera was much smaller than anything else on the market capable of recording and instant playback.
I'm not a huge fan of compact VHS but when it comes to digitizing analog video this is one of the easiest formats because I just put it into my DVD recorder and instant disc I can put into my computer.

I liked it so much I bought two of them! Actually the first one I was able to recover functionality so I have a spare. Thanks for watching.

Great fun. You had me fooled, the footage at the start I was sure was from 40 years ago!

Glad you enjoyed it. I don't normally lead off with footage from the camera but I switched it up for a change. By the end it's clear what's going on.
      Thanks for watching.

hello, and thanks for this review :)
can you please tell me if jvc released some models with hi-fi capability in ntsc countries?
seems they didn't bother too much with this option.
here in france i got two models from very early 90's VHSC and SVHSC with hi-fi (GR-80S and GR-S90S), and i know some others models existed on french market.
but i don't really find equivalent in either pal or ntsc variants. i'm very curious about that.

As far as I know there were no compact VHS camcorders ever made with hi-fi in NTSC countries. I have never heard of one anyway. The format began with a lot of promise but JVC kind of gave up on it treated it as an entry level format towards the end. Thanks for watching.

A few years ago they were everywhere. They are becoming scarce but still out there.
