How To Use The Ground Reaction Forces In Your Golf Swing!
Ground reaction forces are a key factor to implement into your golf swing if you're looking for consistency, accuracy but most of all: more distance. Watch this video to learn more how Isaac Newton's third law of motion works and how we can utilise this ground reaction force into our golf swing to produce a much more reliable swing. Harry recommends you learn the Bonus Tips too (outlined in the chapters below) as these help with the strike aspect and therefore more consistency in your game.

This MOVE Teaches You How To Perfectly Transition in The Downswing!
Harry, I have to admit that I have gotten a bit handsy in my takeway. Today, I was concentrating on the left shoulder and forearms taking the club away, not worrying about my hands and wrists. I focused on a light grip and flexible wrists. It worked out fairly well. I will be working on this move and hopefully, we'll be able to have it become a normal routine. Thanks Harry!
Thanks John, yes, working from the shoulders, arms as opposed to the wrists will really help as the wrists will hing naturally anyway.
Been struggling with this very thing.
Interesting, have you given this left over right grip drill a try yet?
@harryshawgolf yes sometimes I get wristy and lose my angles. I will try the drill. Thanks
Thanks for sharing this little gem!
You're very welcome Nick, pleased you've found this video useful, is there anything else you'd like to see on the channel?
Genius video mate. I've watched so many rotational hip videos on UA-cam and this one by far resonates the most. Appreciate you!
Thank you Adam, much appreciated, pleased this resonates with you the most. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the channel?
Whats the angle for the alignment stick
Slightly steeper than the angle of the club shaft at setup.
Exactly what I’m dealing with now, hitting my irons great but can release my driver. Thanks
Hi thanks for commenting, have you managed to give this a try? Do you find this is easier with the irons?
Definitely easier with my irons
What would this look like with a Driver?
Exactly the same concept apart from one thing which i may look into touching base on in a future upload. All to do with the width of arc.
Fantastic explanation! Going to give this a try.
Thank you, have you managed to give this a try yet?
Thank you Could not stop snap hooking this season. This really helped along with weakening grip and ball position moved up
Hi Mark, that's so great to read thanks for commenting and letting me know. Have you managed to play much since watching this video?
Great vid, thanks Harry 👍🏻
You’re very welcome, pleased you’ve enjoyed the video, have you managed to give this a try yet?
Awesome sauce! Well explained! I luv it!
Thank you! Have you managed to give this a try yet?
@@harryshawgolf I did but only at a warm up pre round. Need to go to the range but doing it indoors without a club
Good to hear you've tried it using a practice round, think that makes it much easier first before heading to the course as its not an easy move to get used to, but so worth it!
Excellent video Harry you’re great at your presentation nice and slow and understand everything. Keep up the good work and yes, more videos on the downswing and weight shift.
Excellent, I’ll look into producing more videos on the downswing and weight shift for you. Thank you, pleased you’re enjoying the content.
thank u for saving my golf!😅☺
You’re very welcome, really pleased my videos are helping you, is there anything you’d like to see on the channel in particular?
thank u so much! i was a slicer before, and couldnt for the life of me draw the ball..now i cant for the life of me stop hocking everything.. some1 told me to pull the club backwards in a straight line And my irons started to get more straight, but still alot of hooks..like lottery..And the driver and wood has become absolute impossible..club comes down closed and i hit a low short ultra hook..i was about 2 quit seriously..but i watched your video about "stop hooking drivers". And what the dude forgot to tell me, but you Sir did, was that After u have pulled the club backwards in a straight line, and cant go any longer, than raise the club straigh UP..i didnt do that before and everything that happend behind my back just felt wrong and results was shait..Now i went outside and grabbed a 7 and it felt so good and consistant 2 pull it straight up, it felt like a real swing and i will try it tomorrow!..i tried driver to, didnt feel as good, but i know now its the thing to do, so i will try that to!🙏
Hi thank you for telling me this, it’s great to read the specific tip during the backswing of swinging up has helped you! Good about trying this with an iron to ease your way into the driver swing. Driver will take more time, Practice perseverance to get used to, keep me posted!
Hi - great video, so many good tips! 1 question: around the 5min mark you mention pushing onto the toes causing a heel strike - what would be your advice to stop the weight transfer onto the toes? Any drills/tips?
Thank you, I’ll take a look at filming a video on this topic for you to post in the next few weeks! But I’d consider the posture/ setup, distance from the ball and early extension during the swing. This week I do also plan to film a video on how to stop standing up in the golf swing so that’ll help too!
The left hip back looks a bit more subtle in your full swing and a bit more exaggerated in the explanation, but I'll give it a try
Yes during the explanation think of the exaggeration to make sure my spine angle stays low. In the actual swing to get to where we want to be (spine angle maintained on the 45 degree angle) we have to exaggerate the feel the opposite way (much lower than necessary.
Fantastic detailed explanation of the downswing transition. I’m guilty of trying to lower my chest, but that didn’t work. Will give this a try!
Thank you, pleased you’ve found this useful for your own game, have you managed to give this a try at the driving range yet?
Well done Harry on this downward waist movement rather than the butt coming in! When I last played, it seemed that when I was making the push back move with my fairway woods and hybrids, I was getting off plane and hitting ground and then ball. Finally got it corrected, but by then, I ran out of holes.
Thanks John, hitting the ground first is probably because you end up getting to the top, pushing the hips back and then bringing the club out and steep. So as long as you do this move and shallow the club as you do the hips back… it’ll work!!
@@harryshawgolf I don't think I was utilizing the inclined circle properly. As you say, I was bringing the club down too steep. When I went back to the 45* angle, I was hitting the ball a lot better. Thanks Harry!!
Brilliant John, pleased this has worked great for you, thanks for commenting, always much appreciated!
Brilliant, I feel this move twice in every seven swing, now I know I need it in every swing😮
Thank you, yes every swing will make a huge difference, it’ll take some time to get used to but if you stick to it. The difference will be huge!
Excellent video. Thank you!!
You're very welcome, have you managed to give this a try yet?
@@harryshawgolf Hi Harry. Not yet, I have painters and landscapers at my house today, but I'm golfing tomorrow and will be trying this for sure. I will let you know how it goes, Thanks for checking in.
No problem, i take it you've managed to head to the course and try this?
This is very well done great lesson
Thank you, pleased you've enjoyed the video what did you take away from this lesson the most?
My elbow points 45 degrees down when I rotate my left palm down. I can't get the elbow facing to target without elevating my shoulder.
Maybe thats because you were already set up with your shoulder open as opposed to being square? Would be best for me to take a look at a video on skillest.
So does it mean one has to stand slightly taller in backswing to execute the little squat move ? Just feels to rotate to top of swing , to then execute that move, it’s difficult in the sequence as it’s no time to do. For me anyway. But if standing slightly taller, it’s easy to perform it.
Yes you will find that standing slightly taller (legs slightly straighter at the top) but i would set up as you normally would to then be a little taller at the top of the backswing to really enourage more of a squat move to begin the downswing. Hope this makes sense.
@@harryshawgolf oh it does. Great stuff. Simple physics too in a way. Thx
You're welcome, pleased you enjoyed the video!
u need to put proper tiles/depictions on your videos. almost all videos giving same look although they cover different subjects.
Hi thanks for sharing your thoughts on the titles and descriptions. Do you think this is the same for the thumbails i design for the content?
Very clear good instructions 👌 thanks Harry.
You're welcome Mike, pleased you've got a few pointers to take on board from this. Have you managed to give these a try yet?
i was trying to throw driver along the ball line.but looks like i have to move it inside in an arc.need more on follow through.
Hi, yes this is the case, to get the club swinging on plane the majority of golfers have the tendency of pushing the club out, so to counteract this and get the club on the correct plane you want to encourage the opposite feeling. Have you managed to give this a try at the driving range yet?
Keep up the great videos Harry, love the contents
Thank you, pleased you enjoyed the video, is there anything in particular you'd like to see on the channel?
Excellent analysis and explanation, Harry.
Thank you, pleased you enjoyed the video, how's your golf going at the moment?
Another excellent tip which I will immediately put into play in tomorrow's club tournament. What you are advocating with releasing the tension of the arms at the top of the swing and bringing the sternum through is something I don't consistently do. Somewhere along the line, one thing or the other gets stalled out. I also have to remember to push the hands away in order to create a wider arc! Well Done Harry! Always look forward to your input!
Thank you John, pleased you enjoyed another video, yes it's very easy for the body to stall when we get this extension in our upper body so it's certainly good to practice this plus the wider arc will make a huge difference, thanks again John!
All the top professionals have spine tilt. Over concentration of hip rotation leads to two way misses.
Yes they certainly do, spine tilt is so important from an accuracy/ consistency perspective… the rotation of the lead hip promote a better swing sequence and timing. Have you ma he’s to give these tips and drills a try yet?
@@harryshawgolf But you're saying not to have much spine tile and to rotate hips a lot. I work on the opposite of that.
Both are key aspects to really focus on, and believe one compliments the other, spine tilt first then hip rotation second as i outline in the video.
Great video good advice, just back from practice range this has really helped my 3wood strikes thanks 17.40
Hi Dave, thanks for commenting with your feedback from taking these tips and drills on. Great to read a video nearly 2 years old is still helping golfers improve. If there’s anything you’d like to see on the channel to help you with your game let me know!
WhenI was young, I sucked at golf...now after years of practice, lessons and coaching, Im not young anymore!
Hi Denny, thanks for commenting, i'm here to help you improve so if there's any more video ideas/ topics you'd like me to cover let me know!
Enjoyed the vid, is it the same move for the driver ???
Thank you, Yes would recommend trying this with the driver.
Great stuff here, but but but my man, your bicep curl movement and final position just doesn’t look the same in the position you are at 9.18 for example. And this is the exact problem hobby players encounter when having lessons. The practise drills do not match the real swing. So there has to be a proper path you guys have that we can’t get to. And have to say, that squat move from 12.30 YOU just have to have a video on that alone. That is one movement that will help tons of hcp golfers.
hi thanks for commenting with your thoughts on the vide, yes the feel VS real concept plays into account with this, the feel of the bicep curl right handed swings only VS hitting golf shots using both hands to form the bicep curl with your right arm only will look different as long as the feel remains the same. Plus i have done a few videos on this topic (the squat) alone if you search my name and downswing they'll come up for you to watch.
An excellent video, Harry. Very useful for what I'm working on right now.
Thank you, pleased you've enjoyed the video and found this useful for your game. How's the driver for you at the moment?
I’m okay with my irons Harry, I pull/almost hook my hybrids, fairway woods and driver, despite a number of lessons I’ve been unable to change this!
Hi Jeff, good to read you're irons are ok, if you're needing help with the longer clubs i'd recommend taking a look at this video i did last year all about how you can stop hooking the golf ball with the driver... ua-cam.com/video/JcFLiOXocwU/v-deo.html
@@harryshawgolf Thank you Harry I’ll take a look. 👍
You’re welcome Jeff, what are your thoughts on this video?
Very well explained, good lesson
Thank you, have you managed to put this into practice yet?
This is 100 percent my problem and I can't shake it...
I had the same problem. I went to the driving range with the information from this video I started with pw and once I hit it good with this club I moved up a club until I was happy through the bag
Hi @mattfletcher2084 thanks for commenting, have you given this a try at the driving range yet?
Hi @wadewade6508 it's great to read you've taken this to the range already and have been able to implement this into your game. Keep going and keep me posted!
Excellent job Harry on explaining how to stop hooking the irons. I am always aware of how important the placement of the hands are on the handle of the club. If either hand is out of alignment, the shot could go left or right. One thing that is my biggest challenge is lower body stall and the arms taking over which leads to a pulled shot. I like the half club and extended alignment rod drills of which I both use! Well Done Harry!
Thanks John, if there's anything you'd like to see next on the channel please let me know!
Been there. Done that. Nothings helps. Still shanking big time. Bought myself a chipper which solved it.
Interesting, have you tried the drills/ tips i suggest in the other shank videos i've done?
@@harryshawgolf no, where can I see that?
Try this one... ua-cam.com/video/TgjyR7o5L8M/v-deo.html
I am on the right track with the squat, to me it feels as if it is happening about 75% of backswing. Have had wonderful ranges session with this technique but does not translate under pressure in match play. To many old habits come back I suppose but on the right track.
Hi Mason, great to read you've been practicing this movement. Would recommend finding a routine to help you handle the pressure on the golf course. Would you like me to see if i can get a mind coach specialist in golf to come on the channel, i've learnt a lot from him and i do believe he'll help you.
I strongly believe that it is mainly a flexibility issue. When I try to keep the left arm straight in a slow motion backswing, I can feel exactly the point at which the muscles in my left back and around my left shoulder can't stretch properly to allow for the left arm remaining straight.
That's very interesting, and yes flexibility and mobility do play a part to achieving this. Can you also feel this stretch/ tension when you just rotate the body with your arms across the shoulders?
Thank you very much for this detailed lesson Harry, I am needing it badly. Being a senior and short hitter, fairway woods have been my go to clubs for years. I am actually able to hit some rather nice fairway wood shots off the deck, but my "batting average" has become pretty poor; about 400. My misses have been very low, short and sometimes to the left. I will be working on your "Maintaining width", "nice and smooth" swing, and "sternum over alignment stick". I will do your drills "swing through and extend" and "rotate away from ball". Would it be good to use the sponge ball on the left arm, seen in your other videos?
Hi Carl, thanks for commenting, pleased you’ve enjoyed the detailed lesson. I wouldn’t worry too much about using the ball for this, as long as your really exaggerate pushing the hands away and keeping them away. This will certainly help with the low point and strike.
@@harryshawgolf OK thank you sir.
Your welcome Carl!
dear harry, elaborate more on follow through. while all focus on back swing, no one talks genuinely about forward through.plz bring another video in detail.
Hi thanks for commenting with your video idea, yes I’ll take note of this and look into doing a video on this topic in the near future! Have you managed to give this a try yet?
very genuine lesson.
Thank you, have you managed to give this a try yet?
Great stuff. But at 9.00 you stated, let it happen. But for a hobby player, HOW does it let it happen. All hobby players it’s all about thinking in doing so. So disaster strikes.
Thanks for commenting with your interesting point, I’ve already taken note of this as I do briefly mention a little more about this (letting it happen) in the downswing. Video coming out on Friday.
Brilliant video easy and simple Great work keep up the good work
Good morning Harry from Australia, tried this from your lesson last week and iv'e never hit the ball better. As an 18 handicapper l had 7 pars and a birdie finishing with 41 stableford points which included 2 wipes. You are a great instructor, thanks very much.
That's amazing to read thank you for letting me know, really pleased from with the progress you've already made. What was the main focus in the swing when you shot 41 points?
@@harryshawgolf The right elbow pointing down or to my body and turning my wrist back to grip the club, this helped me to hit solid straight shots. i'm 73 so if l can play to a 14 or 15hcp i'll be happy. Excellent job Harry in describing how important the right elbow is in the golf swing! I'll definitely vouch for this because I pay a lot of attention to where my right elbow is in my golf swing. I try to always keep it close to my right side and if for some reason it leaves my side, the outcome is not good. I like your suggested drill of gripping the club in the middle of the shaft and making the moves with it that you are recommending! I also like to pay attention to how both of my inner-elbows are facing each other to maintain a connection. All in all Harry, an excellent video that every golfer should pay attention to!
Thanks John, send this to every golfer you know who needs to watch this video!
I Think my issue is a flexibility issue...I've always had a very bent left arm...probably because I'm only 5'5 and most short peoplearen't as flexable as talk lanky people. My arms only go to shoulder height or parelle to the ground..nothing forlast 20 years has ever worked unfortunately to get my left arm even close to straight.
Hi, thanks for commenting with your golf swing background. So with your troubles have you tried rotating more in the backswing? (these tips in this video). If not, i'd advise giving them a try and if your still struggling you can follow me on Skillest and send your swing over for me to have a look at.
@@harryshawgolf thank you, I’m also 64 years old I had my HC down to 10 3 years ago even with a very bent left arm
That's really impressive, you must be able to straighten this up at impact for consistency. Give these a try and let me know how you get on!
@@harryshawgolf ty will do
No problem, keep me posted!
