- Dropping 7 shots in two months isn’t impossible: Harry reveals the exact drill that transformed his game that could do the same for you. This simple yet powerful drill helps you set the club face perfectly throughout your swing, stay beautifully on plane like the pros, and compress the ball for consistent, solid strikes with your irons.
Harry also shares how he overcame his own swing tendencies, like rolling the club face open and losing connection, and explains how this drill fixed those flaws for good. Whether you're looking to improve your backswing and downswing, or take your ball striking to the next level, this video has you covered.

that drill is what i was looking for a long time., thank you so much
I discovered one of your videos similar to this months ago and it has changed my game for ever . Many video's since add more pieces to the puzzle and all of them help . It works with every club from driver to wedge . Love your work Harry . keep it up
@johnathanwetherill456 that's amazing to read thank you for letting me know. More to come!
I've struggled with starting my swing with my hands (rather than big muscles) which results in my hands moving out towards the ball and the club in behind me which results in a host of compensations later in the swing. I've struggled to eradicate this move but this drill and in particular the very early set of the wrists has really helped my backswing and I'm compressing the ball way, way better than before.
@dougborland that's amazing, so pleased to read this this is the case. Brilliant!
Everyone loves this over rotation.works well when fanning the club head,but it blocks the club head so that it’s square.cant get much power that way ,which is what really makes golf fun
@davidsharkey9405 if you find that this leaves an open club face you'll want to promote more flexion in your lead wrist to square things up at impact. Here's a video that will help you with that: ua-cam.com/video/8f8HQ7ho4LQ/v-deo.html
Amazing teacher!!!
This is one of my biggest issues! Thanks!
@jammuu no problem, glad to read you've found this useful for your golf game!
Love it....been doing a variations, but I like the swing thought of palm toward the ball on the takeaway
@leewoods18 thank you!
Both camera angles on the split screen…brilliant!
@MB-rh3ym thank you, glad you like the split screen!
This one drill fixed my OTT move with my irons. I went from -10 path to a -2 within just a few swings.
@LSxAaron8800 that's incredible thanks for letting me know!
Hilarious...
Thanks. It works wonders and feels so easy.
@Luluz520 that's great to read thanks for commenting!
Outstanding visual, thank you
@davidlovesgolf you're very welcome, thanks for commenting!
Smashing it mate! 🙌🏼👏🏻
@hcpgolf thank you mate!
I'm looking forward to practicing this excellent drill on the range just as soon as my club reopens after the holidays. Thanks very much.
@R.Davidson-g4n you're very welcome, thanks for commenting, let me know how you get on!
That takeaway is what i've been working on the past few days. Glad the movement that i somehow came to on my own is validated by you here. However i haven't been doing what you've instructed in the rest of the swing. Gonna work on that and hope for good results and a better version of me in 2025. Thank you and happy new year!
@TerrapinTerror You're very welcome! Happy new year!
Exactly what I’m working on, great video !
@davidowens8536 thank you!
Ah great drill, I can do this with my Hackmotion, hopefully cure my early extension 👍🏻
@pauldavies9554 yes using the Hackmotion to test this is a great idea. Doing this correctly during practicing swing you'll find your wrist angle should be fairly neutral. Favouring slightly more flexed at impact.
This is just what I need. Thanks
@johnpritchard9753 you're welcome, thanks for commenting!
I do this kind of thing. I call it "calibration" of the swing to prep for the game.
@damnthegrifters7313 it's great to read you've found something that works for you.
What a great video I stumbled across your channel by accident but I suffer the same problem rolling the wrists on the takeaway and lifting to top. However on downswing, because I am stuck, I throw my hands out, lose angles and swing over the top (out to in). This causes me inconsistencies in my game. I started the year hcp 10 and finished it at 12 because of my swing. I really like your content - where are you based? I have hit subscribe button because I would like to see more. Thank you!
@susancrowther9998 thank you, really pleased you came across my channel by accident, haha! I'm based in the UK. More content coming your way!
@harryshawgolf great - I live near Blackpool looking to book some lessons with you - how are you fixed? Believe you are near Lymm
@harryshawgolf done some more digging and see you are based in Warrington. Looking to get some lessons to start year off could you give me some details?
Very good stuff. Not sure why folks are saying it’s hard to follow. It’s about as straightforward as golf could ever be. Maybe they should try tennis.
Hey Harry - Exactly the flaw I have is my hands/arms want to continue at top of swing = breakdown of lead arm = firing too early = stuck rear arm... when timed up I'm a 5 hcp, when not, easily 15+. Did the drills at the range over 1.5 hours yesterday, and can say, it 100% works. Set/top/re-set, over and over again - like, I might just bring the sawed off finish to the course it was that good (Fleetwood is onto something). Question I have is on the driver as I only did 8 iron/5 iron (back and forth). Same drills will work for it? Thanks for putting this video out.
@LeftyCanuck good question, for the driver, it's the same feeling, changing the ball position as normal and applying more speed (full swing) in the swing will help the ball stay a good height.
Wow
@lenardtan7169 wow indeed!
So should you set the wrists before the turn or set and turn at the same time
@raymondmedemblik9374 set the wrists then turn for the steps then once you begin combining this i would suggest combining the two, but try both and see what works best for you!
Lmao
Great stuff and well presented. But I find as you become older/stiffer (I'm 66yo) the full shoulder rotation becomes so much more difficult particularly with early set on the backswing. I'm now working on going back to a longer one piece takeaway. Oh to be young again!
@terrystacy8556 if you find it difficult to get the full rotation of the backswing, I would turn as much as you can, then from there that's your backswing. Utilise the downswing: when i talk about the downswing in this video here will really help you generate more speed with a shorter backswing: ua-cam.com/video/04Q1fUZLu3g/v-deo.html
Listen to Harry. Try it. You will be using your big muscles more sequentially and you will be much more consistent with what should be a baby draw.
Make sure you keep pressure on the inside of the balls of your feet to minimize shift.
@damnthegrifters7313 good point to take note of for those of you who struggle with this shifting.
Reminds me of the nick faldo drill which has helped me loads. I will try your drill it seems more to it. I like it :)
@DrGeazy yes i've had a few comments come in from golfers saying it's like the Faldo drill. Give this a try!
This is one of Ben Hogan’s 5 rules. He taught this in 1957
@a1sauce559 hogans tips really are incredible!
I'm practicing the exact Takeaway. It has helped me tremendously on my chips and pitches.
I have not incorporated into my full swing as my arms get very disconnected but your explanation on how to incorporate into full swing makes perfect sense!. Very anxious to get to the range and practice the full swing.
UPDATE: back from incorporating this Takeaway in my full swing and it's a game changer! From the Takeaway, I just focus on making a full turn, maintaining the angles set at Takeaway and I've never struck this well and consistent with EVERY CLUB! You deserve a sub for this, thank you sir!!
Yeah. This takeaway works. I lost it after a few years of playing very solid consistent golf trying new things. Ooops.
@nicholasdemetriades9154 use this to get it back, keep me posted with how you get on
Do you use Hackmotion? It would be interesting to see if you really hold that right wrist hinge thro impact.
@mikerichardson5022 yes I do, I've used it in some videos recently. The Hackmotion would show neutral wrists for the set, top of the swing and at impact a little in the flexed number with the lead wrist.
Are you jchown? Sounds exactly like him
@AP0730 I'm not but I'll take that as a compliment as he's a great golf instructor!
There is no apostrophe in Gets
@thomasg321 i'll take note for future content, thanks for letting me know!
Where’s the link???
@markbingham7764 in the description of the video or use the link on the home page.
Get’s 😭
Dude your head and neck up swing. Pls control.
@oceanyt8 note sure what you mean by this haha
Way too mechanical, stiff & robotic, Bobby J would shudder the whole mess.
If you want to be consistent I would take being a robot any day!🤑
@nicholasdemetriades9154 me too! haha
Few things on the internet are cringier than golf clickbait videos my god
@GeorgeTropicana thanks for sharing your thoughts, note taken.
How is this comment relevant?
@DksPantherPride I guess you'd have to have more than 4 brain cells to understand
3 minutes in and not 1 single word this guy has said means anything to me. How unbelievably complicated this is to even begin to comprehend. I appreciate the quality of production, but gosh, dang, this video's information is way too complex.
@Pacifictheory gutted to read you fond this complicated. If there's anything you can suggest for me to improve my content let me know.
The takeaway keep it on the outside not flick it directly back
