A behind-the-scenes Super 8mm footage from our trip to the Frost House in Michigan City, Indiana
Architect Emil Tessin designed the Frost House in collaboration with Alside Homes Corporation, with interiors curated by Paul McCobb and Knoll in 1964. Conceived as a prefab design, Tessin aimed to build thousands of these homes, but the project faced challenges, resulting in the construction of only a couple hundred units before Alside discontinued the prefab home initiative just 10 months after its launch. The house, anchored by a steel framework, boasts distinctive exterior walls composed of aluminum-clad panels with a styrofoam core, embodying Tessin's 1960s vision.
Former owners Bob and Karen meticulously uncovered the rich history of the Frost House during their tenure, dedicating a website to share their findings. When current owners Marc and Jennifer acquired the home in 2021, they were surprised by the depth of its history. Stepping into the space revealed its unique character, from the period-appropriate color palette to the vintage furniture and built-ins throughout. The interior design, a collaboration between Paul McCobb and Knoll, featured Knoll's expertise in curtains and furniture, while McCobb contributed design elements such as kitchen cabinets, vanities, glass partitions, and wardrobes. Emil Tessin's connection with Florence Knoll, rooted in their upbringing together, added a personal touch to the project. The Frost House interiors also showcased furnishings designed by Eero Saarinen, a lifelong friend of Florence Knoll, contributing to the home's exceptional history and design legacy.
The Frost House stands as a genuine testament to preservation, embodying the most intact and period-correct representation of an Alside Home known to exist. Preservation in design extends beyond physical conservation, encompassing the maintenance of the design's integrity and original intent. This approach ensures that future generations can appreciate the contributions of influential designers such as Emil Tessin, Florence Knoll, and Paul McCobb, who played a pivotal role in shaping the modern design landscape.

That's really nice, I just don't understand the American style of leading your entrance directly into your living area (and even kitchen here). I know there's a small divider, but with a kind of blank slate design like this one, you don't *have to* lay it out like that. That leads me to think that it's a deliberate choice

You are so incredibly blessed. What a dream to have. Like many others Frank Lloyd wright is my obsession and I live in an area where we do not have mid-century very far and in between. The color and texture of the movie is unmistakable 8mm film. Beautiful, stunning shots. The play of light on various surfaces is remarkable. Love the shadows of metal lawn furniture on the ground, the foliage next to the walls and the light through textured glass, slightly revealing what’s behind it. I so enjoyed watching your 8mm film. Excellent.

I was raised in a home designed by Edward Killingsworth... and everything this man describes about the experiences of living in an architect designed home is right on the money. The value of good architecture is only paralleled by nature, itself.

Really great comparison with cars. The "impracticality" of these ranch homes is very much like how we modify our cars to be a little bit "impractical" on the streets. We overlook them BECAUSE RACECAR. With these homes, we overlook those bits BECAUSE MCM.

I really enjoyed your original feature on this house here 6 months ago. It was fascinating to learn the history of the house, it's creators, and how it was brought back to original condition by Karen and Bob in 2017. The photography was excellent and showed a lot of features of the house. What a terrific story! This "bonus feature" , however really misses the mark for me in that it is not historic old 8mm film of the house from the 60's, it is simply "simulated" film or digital video from your feature on the house less than a year ago made to look old. What's the point of creating an out of focus, shaky modern imitation of something that never existed? A proper "bonus feature" would have been some additional "new" information about the project or people involved. Perhaps comparing this restoration with another existing Alside house that most likely has been "remuddled" or more history on the Alside Homes Corporation itself. Surely they didn't build 20 houses per month in several states and then go bankrupt in 10 months and only 27 still exist. Some "bonus feature".

Hey Mark, thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the video. Btw this was 8mm film that we shot while on our trip to the home, no it was not shot back in the 60's but it certainly isn't "simulated" digital video. Hope you enjoy the upcoming videos.
