- David and Arianne are no strangers to Mid-Century Modern homes having lived in a few others years past however this one of a kind Architectural home sited upon the hillsides of San Pedro is perhaps their most special, A home built by Rolly A. Andrew in 1959. After stepping in the home they both looked at each other and instantly knew they wanted the home, picturesque views that span from the Hollywood sign all the way past Laguna Beach, this is truly a home that was perfectly positioned to enjoy it all. Fast forward a few years, some restoration and remodeling and they share the story of what it's like to live in such a home. The indoor/outdoor flow alongside the walls of glass throughout the entirety of the home is something that needs to be enjoyed in person to truly understand.
The Architect Rolly wasn't particularly a well known architect and after doing some research Arianne came to find out this was Rollys first Residential project after obtaining his license. Aside from Green Hills Memorial park there isn't much more about Rolly that David and Arianne were able to find out. Could this be the only residential project from an architect that seemingly blended the home perfectly into the hillside or are there others out there? Driving up the coast in their restored Porsche's to pull into the driveway of their beautifully restored home with endless views doesn't sound like a bad day.

My grandparents lived in this home together for 40 years. It was a cherished gathering space in my family. They made lemonade from the lemon trees outside, taught their 9 grandchildren how to make bread, donuts and aebelskiver, and helped the community rally around a housing project for veterans nearby. We all spent many hours splashing in the pool and watching the boats come into the harbor. Thank you for this beautiful video and for keeping the spirit and charm of this home.

What a great couple to be the owners & curators of this beautiful home. I really enjoy architecture and it’s nice to see they choose to embrace this unique home and not talk of changing anything, which in all honesty, is extremely hard to do when purchasing an existing home.

What a most delightful couple; I love how what worked for him in his courtship of his lovely wife was her willingness and ability to learn to ‘pop the clutch’; these are my sort of people and although the complexity of the surface finishes, it is the basic simplicity with the absolute most incredible views. A place masterfully kept in the original vein Rolly Andrew had when he created it.

Wonderful space. How great to have the blueprints. These homes are very aware of the context - the climate and geography. This approach in my view doesnt work as well in a cold, damp climate. For me mid century modern atchitecture = California

The "popcorn" ceiling is an old idea, intended for two purposes: first, it helps to scatter the light, so there is an even, softer illumination in the spaces. Secondly, it's fireproofing, i.e, it's asbestos, and if you know anything about the problems inherent in asbestos abatement, you know that disturbing that coating will make the asbestos "friable," i.e, airborne. You definitely don't want that to happen because, no matter what, that airborne microscopic asbestos dust will be in your air - and, thus, in your lungs, forever, and it's a carcinogen. I live in a high-rise apartment in Seattle, built in 1967, and all the apartments have asbestos ceilings. When the management announced they intended to remove it, it was very soon afterward that this idea went away. Asbestos abatement used to be a fairly popular thing to do in older buildings with asbestos ceilings, until the issues with making a danger even more dangerous by disturbing the asbestos brought a halt to the asbestos abatement industry.
I’ve watched a few of these videos and they’re wonderful and it’s interesting than in each one so far there’s a Porsche 911. Makes sense.

This home is so magical. My parents bought it in 1975. So many happy memories live here and David and Arianne have done such a marvelous job of updating some of the well worn features but keeping it so much the same. My family is thrilled to see how beautiful and well loved the home is. Just a note that my brother James H Hansen is a talented architect and designed the office space in keeping with the original architecture when my folks needed additional room for a home office and art studio. Well done all around!
