Nice as they are, still do not come close to telling the full story. That being said, it is refreshing to listen to such an informed, articulate, owner passionate about his beautiful home.
So glad that this special home has ended up in the hands of someone so thoughtful, curious, and appreciative. Thank you for so generously and informatively sharing it with us all.
Lovely to hear someone speak so articulately and passionately about their home: The appreciation and gratitude just pours out. Wonderful house and custodian.
This is what he tells himself over and over to justify his pretentious ownership. It’s really just a bunch of curved wood and soft light from mid century on a hill but whatever. That LA hipsters for ya!
Schindler was a genius. Thanks for being such an agreeable, enthusiastic and passionate steward of this permanent American resource. Your house is an important and permanent part of history and a very important token of a time when the philosophy of the USA with respect to encouraging the US middle class not to be merely “housed” but, rather, to have the right as average hardworking members of a sucessful nation to enjoying the privilege of living in a self-consciously progressive time with respect to the working class citizen. It’s important to understand that many of these 20th century designers shared a philosophy that understood the homes they designed as meant as a benefit to the middle class American, a token of the success of the nation they gave their work (and lives … in WWs I and II) to. When they were first built many of these guys homes weren’t meant just for the rich or for the elite “in-the-know” snobs. Many of these mid-mod iconic architects were champions of the common working man and thought everyone deserved to enjoy new, simple well-designed homes made from modern simple materials not laden with ornamentation. The best of these homes NOW of course are in the hands of the rich, as all the best art inevitability seems to end up. But that’s not who many of them were originally intended for. There’s exceptions of course (Kaufman house etc.) but many were built for working people of average means, up to the successful middle class local small business owner. It’s only been the last two or theee decades that they have ALL become prestige items and targets of asset acquisition by the very wealthy. Thanks for sharing your home. It’s great when a current owner is humble enough to consider themselves as stewards of an important part of history and feel obliged to share it with the descendants of the wide variety of working people for whom many of them were designed in the first place.
Very well said! I agree completely. Schindler is my favorite architect as well, and love visiting his first personal home that he built in Hollywood. The interviewed owner is spot on that Schindler’s homes don’t really “read” from the street, but must be experienced from the inside to really appreciate his genius.
Interesting, I felt it’s chic but cold and uncomfortable. That being said, I’d be more than happy to move from Hollywood over to silver lake into this home
Schindler is my favorite architect. So glad to see one of his beautiful works occupied by such a thoughtful person with such appreciation for his craft! I was shocked to hear he is not an architect himself given his knowledge of the design.
Isn’t it great that such an enthusiastic steward was aligned with this remarkable place? It makes me happy that people somewhat seem to be turning away from the McMansion “aesthetic” (lol) and are trying to find more soulful places with a history to live 🙃
So rare to find an owner so articulate. There is a Schindler beach house that has captivated me for years and not just because of the roof design. This builder has enormous talent. He and John Lautner make spaces I want to be in. I grew up in a modernist house in the fifties and sixties and I feel it did shape me.
the thing I find interesting about Lautner is that his homes go all over the spectrum due to a specific client's budget and also how the homes are all over in different areas of cities
What an amazing home. It’s incredible the think this house was built in 1936. Schindler was a man ahead of his time. I’m so glad you found this beautiful home.
Thank you, Mr Romano. The house as you have revived it is gorgeous. I haven't seen a Schindler interior as sensitively realized, colored and furnished as this one. Bravo !
@@ChrisChocol Take a look at the dining set. The new owner had to have those pieces made, to Schindler's specification. The chairs are unique in the architect's body of work and are especially challenging to construct. This was a labor of love . . .

I used to live in Silverlake. I remember seeing some interesting houses but since I was young and didn't know any homeowners I never got an opportunity to see any up close. From there I moved to SF to attend Calif. College of the Arts.
I also learned about architecture from my mother's curious nature. we would go to garage sales, and she would ask about the house and most of the time be invited in. I saw a cross section of homes. He wonders what his children will take from living in the house. I believe that they will retain the curiosity of their family for architecture just as I have. I grew up in a Craftsman Spanish style Ca bungalow and never forgot it.

His homes are among my favorite residential designs. I learned about him when studying architectural interior design many decades ago. That a Schindler home came up for sale in LA, and only one buyer was interested blows my mind. I'd love to own and live in a Schindler home.
so modest and absolutely beautiful. amazing colors, windows and vibes. and i love the stairs uwu its the first house i see so close to my dream house. its a livable art piece you can wake up and fall in love with a different corner everyday. thank you for sharing.
That staircase is fabulous! This house is such a beautiful solution to building on a slope. I've got my eye on a sloping lot and and this gives me ideas on how to approach it. The biggest challenge is figuring out how to provide at least the basic services on one level so I can continue to enjoy it even if I find myself in old age unable to negotiate stairs.
Beautiful. This is early in the modern architecture movement. It still looks very fresh. Check out E 1027 by Eileen Gray. Tour it if you're in Nice. Modern, sloping lot, view of water. Very nice. Thanks for the virtual tour!

My intro was seeing the Eichlers sprinkled around San Francisco and Bay Area. At the time I didn’t know what I was looking at, but was totally captivated by it.
I’m feeling a mid century and Scandinavian style but to think this was designed in the 1930s seems like the architect was decades ahead of others. Love that the furniture is original to the design.
Thank you so much for inviting me and everyone else into your home. I grew up in the area, a friend's parents bought a Lloyd Wright home in Chevy Chase canyon, and I got to experience what real architecture was in my teens. I'm a Nuetra and an Eichler fan too. We are in Mt Washington and we love walking around the reservoir, gonna look out for your place next time.
I lived in the Schindler Laurelwood building in the hills above Studio City. It took me 19 years to get into that building but I finally did from Dec.30, 1999-2007. I cannot begin to tell you how much I absolutely love Schindler's work! His architecture is so seamless, pure and organic; it stands the test of time with the most unique and sophisticated essence. I could feel his soul from within!
I had the honor of having lunch (many, many years - decades ago) with Raymond Neutra, the Neutra who had sanity and became a medical examiner, aka Quincy, with the L.A. Department of Health, and not an architect. Neutra spent time with Schindler at his King Rd house in L.A. The two men were polar opposites, albeit pioneers in L.A. Modernism. Schindler was a party animal, Neutra, a steiff Austrian who retired early and woke up early. Neutra had his cruel side. Neutra, upon seeing the rebuilt VDL Research II house stated to Dion, you took the soul out of my house. The Walker House here, from Schindler, is a masterpiece, and a vanguard of modernism, and still has its soul. I have only been in three Schindler homes, and all were very special. I have been in four Neutra homes, and all very special, too. I like both architects and this pre WW2 era in Los Angeles, a special time of innovation. You're not too far from the VDL house, and the differences between Schindler's and Neutra's vocabulary is quite different in the same location.
Amazing home and I appreciate that someone can own one of these houses and not feel the need to tear out the guts to "modernize" it, when the house is more modern than today's homes.
Gorgeous house by one of the great architects of the past century. And I wholeheartedly agree with other comments that the current owner has shown great sensibility and care in the décor of its interiors.
Such a beautiful flow of space, wonderfully open and integrated with the outside, but cozy and perfectly scaled for human dwelling. Very interesting details, the carpentry is a chapter all by itself, the stairs, the location of strategically places windows, just to make life happier. Thanks for sharing. This house has a soul. A happy soul too.
It's interesting that he mentions "not being stuck in a box with a little cut out window." It was California's Title 24 energy-saving campaign that created these little boxes with small cut out windows - to save on energy, the there was a limit to your window area compared to the size of your home. This home could not have been built in say the 1970s, especially since it probably has single pane windows.
Andrew here. It's original to the house! We even have the original box it came in (which was designed for Barker Bros. by KEM Weber). The hands are broken off, though, and the cord is no longer attached. I recently found a working model and plan to swap it in it someday.
That was absolutely wonderful! I am surprised you are not an architect, you speak so well about the house, It really is beautiful! The interior is much nicer than Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses. Thank you for being the steward of the house. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Very interesting details, the carpentry is a chapter all by itself, the stairs, the location of strategically places windows, just to make life happier. Thanks for sharing. This house has a soul. A happy soul too.
Amazing! Thanks to the owner and the producers of this video. Schindler was truly one of the greatest.
Nicely done! Such a wonderful, warm piece of architecture.
The house is incredibly beautiful - the first I knew about Schindler. The lines are clean and pleasing, and the views are phenominal.
Your interior design adds such beauty to this wonderful home.
Yes this guy was meant too live in that house hes absorbing it in his soul which is beautiful
just remarkable. deffo has some Neutra VDL vibes on the interior.
The exterior is my favorite part. the color with the rocks and gravel and trees.
Just that car in front of that house in that color. That's beauty right there.
I so love this house. You are so lucky. Thanks for showing us your place, it's meaning in the neighbourhood/communities etc.
Love the GE/Telechron art deco clock on the wall (I have one, too!)
Andrew here. It's original to the house! We even have the original box it came in (which was designed for Barker Bros. by KEM Weber). The hands are broken off, though, and the cord is no longer attached. I recently found a working model and plan to swap it in it someday.
Oh how beautiful. Thank you for this carefully made documentary!
What a dream to live in this house. Thank you for sharing this space. This was a wonderful, almost therapeutic video to watch.
That was absolutely wonderful! I am surprised you are not an architect, you speak so well about the house, It really is beautiful! The interior is much nicer than Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses. Thank you for being the steward of the house. Thank you for sharing it with us!
I know FLLW homes but this is even a few steps more! I love all the levels and angles and the light. Amazing home.
I love your house! I fell in love with this style when I was a teenager. Every country, city, state my eyes look for this esthetic
Great story. Home. Nice work.
