I like to bring attention to the essential work being done by the film projectionists of Australia. These dedicated individuals are responsible for the setup and operation of numerous rare 35 and 70mm film screenings.
Film projectionists play a crucial role in ensuring that audiences have a memorable and immersive cinematic experience. Their expertise in handling and threading up the projector contributes to the seamless screenings of these classic films.
As cinemas continue to embrace digital technologies, let us not overlook the artistry and skill that is involved in traditional film projection. The efforts of projectionists deserve recognition and appreciation for upholding the magic of cinema.
This channel is about acknowledging the hard work of film projectionists and thanking them for their commitment to delivering outstanding cinematic experiences.
Cheers

It looks like the right zone of the first Alien's scope framing has been cropped a lot and the down zone a little. Was that on the original print or was the masking window of the cinema? * Sorry for my English
Good old Cinemeccanica projector is nice and clean. I used to thread that baby up with 70mm in about 15-20 seconds.
I’ve gotten my eiki 16 machine threading record of about 16 seconds. Can’t imagine doing it with 70 in that time. I take a while to thread up 70 on the vic 8 as the loops need to be pretty darn up to scratch otherwise it can ruin the film. And in days like this where 70 is so valuable, I certainly don’t want to do that. Cheers, Have a good one!
Ran this print hundreds of times in Melbourne, and never had to do a test screening. Wonder why that is necessary?
@@classic_movie_trailers Orpheum do test runs to double check everything. The Orpheum is very presentation based so it’s better to be prepared for anything. As film can go wrong very easily.
@@ClarkTeddles Yes can see the need for preparation and caution. As my theatre was the only one screening this print for many years a careful bench check when winding was enough to make sure all the joins etc are ok.
Thank you Clark.

Amazing.
Is a 1982 International cut 35 version?
It’s unfortunately not the one with the narration by Harrison ford. I don’t know too much about blade runner so I presume it’s the more common cut of the film. Not the Final Cut, but something earlier.
@@ClarkTeddles thanks
@@ClarkTeddles I think it's the 1992 Director's Cut.
@@atti97 you’re are probably right. I don’t know much about the various cuts of BR but that seems to be most likely the cut shown in this video. Cheers
Amazing- never seen this uet always wondered how it 9s done. Is it the same process for 35mm print reels? Is IMAX 70mm print reels? Is the quality of 70mm twicwvas good?so many questions!
35mm film build up to a platter works exactly the same way. Imax Film uses 70mm but the image is sideways taking up 15 perforations. Normal 70mm is 5 perforations. Normal 35mm is 4 perforations per frame. 70mm is many times better resolution (more than 2) than 35mm and Imax many more times again. Before platters (and many cinemas still today) theatres ran 2 projectors with changing from one to another between spools.
@@Pioneers_Of_Cinema wow great reply. If thats how good imax is im going to get a front row seat ( and probably neck ache)!
@@jim-stacy First, make sure it is an Imax that screens 70mm film. Most converted to digital projection. Front row would be too much - they chose a weird aspect ratio that is very high - sit towards the centre-back for best viewing.
@@Pioneers_Of_Cinema digital. Phone cameras are amazing. But its when you really zoom in to a low light 35mm film you see the difference. I can only imagine how much light and detail 70mm captures. Ill have to do some research. I want to find a 70mm imax film theatre and go experience it
Thank you for continuing to share these great behind-the-scenes!!
Thanks for the comment! I’ll be sure to make many more. Cheers
Excellent Clark. I didn't know standard 70mm blow-up prints were being struck. Do you know how many there are worldwide because I think there are only 12 IMAX prints? I suppose Brad Miller may be the person to ask so if you haven't been told then I'll hassle him in your FaceAche thread. John.
Hi John, I believe there were around 40 or so of these prints made. A lot of them went to the states but thanks to Brad we were able to get a few around the world. Have a great day John! Cheers
At least 10 I guess, based on the label.. not that it really says much at all since 'more than 10' is pretty nonspecific 😂
One print ended up in Oslo, Norway at least. Screened on Klingenberg cinema down town..
Deja Vu. Thank you Clark.
Is this a reupload? What has changed from the original video?
Few audio glitches and missing shots. They were minute but would rather the better version be uploaded publicly. After all, it’s all about the quality! Cheers
@@ClarkTeddles - I did notice and wonder why the audio was muted briefly during the splicing of the 70mm film print process. Well done for being so meticulous, Clark. 👏🏻
Thanks, Cheekster! greatly appreciate the kind words. Hope you enjoy seeing this in both dolby and imax! I'd personally go to the dolby, as they apparently have the best color and of course sound. No Dolby cinemas in Australia for now. have a good one! cheers@@cheekster777

This one is doing rather well Clark. No change there then! Well done young man. John.
Hi John, Hope you've been well. I was just watching a few of your reviews last night, particularly the ones showing your 35mm projector such as Fifth Element. I was also surprised this video is doing well, with 500 views within two days, which I'm extremely happy about. Hope to fly to the UK one day to attend the BFCC! Kindest regards, Clark
@@ClarkTeddles We're trying to get a new sort of BFCC set up as an official body right now. John Franklin is doing this and if he's successful the new venture should have a long future ahead of it which will be based on the Film Is Fabulous event we held in Leicester in October. Saving film and television programmes will be at the heart of it all. John.

Didn’t seem like many prints were struck. The print shown in this video is now being shipped to Sydney’s Ritz. Only two prints in australia. Thanks for the comment, cheers

No problem Cheekster. Hope you’ve been doing well!
That’s awesome
It sure is. Thanks
Without the projector head doors when running - especially 70mm - is pretty noisy. I put acoustic foam on the inside of our doors and it cuts noise substantially. For some installations (like this one with a lens turret) doors can't be used, although the projectors come with them. They easily slip on and off. BTW re the description box: this film is 70mm wide. 65mm refers to the film that runs in cameras. The release prints are 70mm to accommodate the sound tracks. Lawrence magnetic 6 track sound was far superior to the latter DTS version. Australia had a 70mm magnetic version since the 1989 re-release but it was send to Korea around the mid 2000s and never seen again.
Screened this print at least 100 times in a theatre in Melbourne, from its original release until 2015. Magnetic track dust rubs off onto the gate runners and needs cleaning every spool (we did not have platter but ran spool to spool on 2 Cinemeccanica Vic 8 projectors (like the Orpheum model but without a lens turret) The 6 track magnetic sound was superb. A unique and very superior sound format. Unfortunately, like Kodachrome and IB Technicolor the magnetic sound technology was junked and is now an obsolete format.

Совершенно верно!
I'm surprised that the film print almost looks exactly like the 2012 remaster!
Not quite, this has the original color timing with better white balance. 2012 has a teal tint added
How did you handle the intermission?
Both parts were spliced together, there was no intermission, just the “intermission” card. The screening was very late and so the candy bar was shut so the audience couldn’t do anything other than go the bathroom.
just curious, how'd you guys get that much scrap IMAX film?
In 2003 to promote Kill Bill vol 1, my local theater had a 1 day event of jackie brown, pulp fiction & reservoir dogs all on 35mm. It was great to see those. I remember Reservoir was a well worn print, it looked a little purple. At one point the film was a little damaged, the projector struggled and the house lights came in for maybe 2 seconds and it all corrected itself.
A print of reservoir dogs would be amazing. That Tarantino marathon sounds great. And yes, sometimes a stuck platter will trip the system to think the feature has finished and the lights will turn on in the auditorium, glad it was fixed! Cheers, Thanks for the comment
Beatyfull print 70mm 😍😍💖💖
Certainly, it looked amazing. Cheers!
Good Cinema❤🎉
truly!
DTS!! Yeah baby!
Gotta love it!
It looks great if this was at my theater in town you would have gray bars on the top and bottom of the screen like on a old tv and the sound would be so low you would be like what did they say and then fall a sleep. I quit going to the movies its not worth it since it turned digital they killed the presentation at our theaters in my town.
I agree, ever since digital the whole "presentation" part of the movies has been lost. Thats why these film screenings are always great, it feels like a very special event (which it is). Thanks for commenting
i still love the 35mm...nice to see it in action. your are great dude
Cheers! I appreciate your kind words! 35mm is great!
I’m glad that there’s a movie theater near where I live that has 70mm. The first time I experienced 70mm was for Oppenheimer, and ever since, I fell in love with the format, I’ve even heard great things about it like how stunning it looks
70mm looks amazing when done right. If you get the chance to see "Baraka" in 70, thats the best-looking 70mm print out there, its great, you wont be disappointed. Cheers! Enjoy
If anyone needs a set of Titanic DTS disks I have a spare set we kept as emergency. The DTS sound disks came in plastic sleeves and were supposed to travel with the 70mm film trunks. Often they would get crushed inside the trunk or be lost in transit if they traveled separately. Like any CD they can also be scratched and not play.
Hi! I would like to have a copy of the DTS disk, how can I obtain it, thanks!
The disks need to play in a theatre DTS player. Do you have this need?@@vanylaskywalker
wow...thats one full platter deck!
sure is. obviously, if it were 6 track mag it would have to be split with an intermission.
That is a scary weight. I much prefer to screen 70mm on spools - two projectors. Yes the thickness of magnetic sound adds substantial volume to a spool. @@ClarkTeddles
86KG or 189.5 Pounds
Was the 70mm print anamorphic and had to be desqueezed? From a distance, the print had a similar anamorphic look just like anamorphic 35mm.
It's 2.20:1
No anamorphic - it is a flat regular 70mm ratio of 2.2:1 - five sprocket holes in height.

@@ClarkTeddles Thank you! I live up in Northern California (Sacramento) and sadly our only 70mm is our imax theatre which just showed OPPENHEIMER which is BEYOND! There is also a 70mm theater in San Francisco but haven’t seen it run titanic. THANKS FIR YOUR RESPONSE!

Can you share more about The DTS sound system? Greetings from Mexico!!
The Dts reader feeds the DTS timecode into the DTS processor, in which it detects the code and finds the correct track to play exactly in sync, it does all of this within 6 frames of reading the timecode. A much better explanation can be found in my Oppenheimer at the Ritz video. The Film-Tech Cinema Systems forum/website also has great information about it too. Cheers! have a great day
In addition to Clark's reply, the DTS system detects if there is a join or piece of film missing and instantly jumps the CD-R to the correct spot to keep it in sync. Personally I prefer the sound of 6 track magnetic sound - a system now only found on older 70mm or 35mm film prints as it is obsolete. The magnetic sound is much warmer and has more depth and presence than the DTS which I find a bit top-end heavy and shrill. When I screened DTS we ran the sound through a professional equalizer to make the sound a bit less harsh. The DTS system is the only sound source on DTS 70mm - so if your DTS reader, or processor fails there is no sound. On post-mono 35mm film there is usually multiple sound tracks to cover if one fails.
I’ll bet it has The Digital Experience Waterdrop Sonic Landscape and Sparks trailer
