  • Here is a short video I was able to make with some extra footage I got while filming the "Lawrence Of Arabia" test screening. While I was there, Andrew, the projectionist was making up 2001, so I thought I'd film it so I could make a little video like this.
    Enjoy

I first saw 2001 in 35mm in Paris. You could actually see inside the projection booth outside the screening room through a large panoramic window. I will never forget watching the reels turning slowly to the music of the blue danube. They didn't have platters then. I was 10 years old. The following week I purchased the soundtrack on compact cassette.

      Fantastic story, Jremy.
seeing the reels turning would be unreal.
      Thanks for watching

Haha! I’ve seen 2001 in both 35mm and 70mm and it never occurred to me that the spinning space station during the Blue Danube section looks like a film reel or projector platter system. Nice one!

I've never noticed that either, very good eye you must have!
I've never seen 2001 on 35mm, but I'm sure it would look great
      Thanks for watching!

My favourite film I did catch a 70mm screening of it recently and it was superb as I expected. I also have the 4K and its was a revelation to see and hear. Great you've chosen the Blue Danube a perfect choice of the music by Kubrick for the space flight to the space station and then to the moon itself.

      Hi Steve,
Glad you were able to attend a 70mm screening of this, it’s unreal!
The 4K is certainly a revelation to see, I believe it’s one of the best looking 4K discs out there.
Very much like your criterion videos by the way! I’m currently working on some notes for my pink flamingos review. The new restoration is phenomenal.

It looked like you were leaving the leaders on the reels. Did they have a no-cut policy with the print? I know some distributor will only allow you to platter films if you don't cut the head and tail leaders off.

The leaders were spliced off each reel. This video was made with spare footage so the process may not be accurate. But I can assure you that each leader and tail were spliced off to make one continuous feature. Of course the leader at reel 1 and tail of the last reel were kept on.
