  • Here is a behind-the-scenes video documenting the making up of a brand new 70mm print of Nolan's new large-format biography, Oppenheimer.
    The print was struck photochemically and audio is played via DTS timecode. The total feature was 5 reels (the reels were designed and made by Brad Miller at Film-Tech). Reel 1 also included a 3-minute section of Vertigo to be used when testing to make sure the DTS audio is in sync.
    Credits:
    Filmed on location: Ritz Cinemas, Randwick
    Projectionist: John Wilson
    Co-Projectionist: Benjamin Olsen
    Special Thanks: Brad Miller
    Tickets to see Oppenheimer in 70MM at the Ritz can be found here:

    This is awesome. I've never seen a film in IMAX before but this makes me even more keen to see this one in that format. I love how tangible this is, it's "just" a beautiful evolution of old technology. Greetings from Hungary :)

      A truly brillaint way to put it! evolution of old technology, love it. Hope you get to see a film in IMAX one day, I only had my first IMAX viewing until a couple of weeks ago in Melbourne, when it's done well, it truly is the best way to see certain films. Thanks for commenting, Cheers!

      if it is ever projected, I will be sure to film it, although I'm sure the picture clarity is exactly the same (if not, very close) to the 70mm release of vertigo. Although I greatly doubt it will be projected on screen as the DTS system is perfectly setup. Thanks for watching!

      Thankfully the "Platter" system requires no need to rewind the film. although if you had a reel-to-reel setup (also known as changeovers) you would need to rewind each reel.

    Does the print have cue marks for theaters that want to do change overs?

    • @ClarkTeddles
      @ClarkTeddles  Рік тому +1

      It does not as the ritz have a platter system. Cinemas with changeover systems would add the cue marks themselves with some was crayon or add a marker of sorts. Cheers!

    • @WestlineDI
      @WestlineDI Рік тому +1

      Actually it does have changeover cues at the end of the first four reels. I asked for them and Film-Tech kindly obliged. I don't need them but it's film so why not?

    • @ClarkTeddles
      @ClarkTeddles  Рік тому

      Sorry I meant to re reply to this comment the other day after seeing this print at the ritz again. It does have cue marks. I assumed it wouldn’t have cue marks because platter systems are so common, and that cinemas with changeovers would add the cue marks themselves, that’s what was done for the 70mm release of joker. Thanks for replying, John, cheers.

    Terrific Video. A few questions:
    1:08 What is the Vertigo DTS Test? Is that an excerpt of the Hitchcock film? If so, which scene?
    3:00 Aren’t white gloves recommended for Splicing film?
    3:36 What was contained on the 2nd disc and the flash drive?
    Also, once the film has completed its run, do you splice back the heads and tails of each reel?

    • @ClarkTeddles
      @ClarkTeddles  Рік тому +5

      Hi,
      1. The test film on reel 1 is a 3 minute scene from vertigo (unsure of what scene). it can be used when testing the DTS setup to make sure everything is in sync.
      2. Gloves are recommended but only the sides of the film and not the picture were touched. leaving nothing on the projected image.
      3. the 2nd disc included the other half of Oppenheimer. the flash drive included the entire same tracks. this way, theaters around the world have an option to pick between both. for the CD-rom, its separated onto two discs due to its large 1.3 GB size.
      4. The print that the Ritz received does not need to be sent back for now. But typically, when a print is returned, the leaders and tails are of course spliced back on.
      Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers

    I remember when they played DTS off of cd's there was 2 cd and if u wonted trailers you had to have a disk for that 2 or else it would play stereo untill it found the triler with dts on it on 35 mm good times better then they are now with all digital now plus we had masking so no gray bars on the screen like today it just looks like a old tv now when u go to most movie theater all the Presentation is gone now a days

    • @ClarkTeddles
      @ClarkTeddles  Рік тому +1

      I agree, ever since digital was introduced, the bar has been set very very low for movie presentations. That's another reason why film presentations are so great, they're manually planned out and perfected with each screening. Digital always has flaws, one way or another.
