An update on the power test on the 1.25 meter band of the Baofeng UV-17 Pro GPS. The tx issue on 1.25 meters is now fixed in firmware version 1.03 onwards (and possibly in the older 1.28 firmware?.....don't have a 1.28 firmware model to test.....it was definitely faulty in firmware version 1.27).

Copycat Baofeng BF K5 Plus Versus Quansheng UV-K5. Who wins!
Переглядів 9 тис.11 місяців тому
They say "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" and if that's the case then Baofeng have certainly done a fine job of imitating the Quansheng UV-K5 with their Baofeng BF-K5 Plus......even the name is a copy.....but really under the skin they have nothing in common. They need to sell these with the LATEST firmware..I am stuck with an old bad firmware and dont have MS Windows. They should also ALWAYS make a Linux Version because Linux is FREE and you can Live Boot it without installing it meaning Both Mac users and Windiws users ALSO have access to it as opposed to Windows..Neither Mac Users or Linux users have access to it without Paying or without installing it. Annoying
GPS is used for APRS
Too darned many Baofeng models now (ugh!)...
Where can you get hold of the Bluetooth app for this Radio. I received mine today and drawn a blank with it so far, i need the android app. Any help would be greatfuly appreciated 73de Wayne 2e0bvj
@@qrphfradio7753 apparently there is an apk file available for Bluetooth but I personally would not be happy installing any file on my phone that didn't come through Google play store thus ensuring it was virus and spyware free. For me personally, it's just not worth the risk and programming via a cable and pc works fine. Until an app is available via Google play store for android I won't be using Bluetooth via an unapproved phone app to program my radio.
@bigwill4423 I totally agree with you on this one, the other option is to maybe use an old phone that you no longer use, factory reset it and use it just for the purpose of doing things like this. That way theirs no issues should it turn out to be dodgy.
Have you seen the DMR version of this radio it's the Baofeng DM32 £45 PLUS £9 tax.. I just ordered one of these now, I wish I'd seen those before I bought the UV32. I'm pretty impressed with this one so another Baofeng to the obligatory and growing hand held collection. It's part of the licencing conditions now that you have to own as many Chinese radios as you can 🤔😬😄
Good luck to you.
Yup, an in depth review with fair and honest walkthrough and assessmetn? thi is just what we needed. this is a newer radio for us stateside, and i really appreciate you taking the time for this. I'll be buying one soon! Many thanks. -Wesley WSEL698
They are easy to program with odmaster which can be downloaded from the google play store on your phone. You can change the power settings, change from wide or narrow band, set up for repeaters, or change the frequencies altogether. Have fun!
Look a Motorola APX 8000!!!!!!! Oh wait. 😜🤪
Hey I found the app to program this. Talked to the BTECH distributor, on an iPhone look up RADIO TOOLS I found it. I’ve had the app crash multiple times tho.
your audio...... very low.
Its fine, YOUR audio......very low.
the app is called Super Walkie Talkie
@@tagairsoft thank you but I can't find it on android play store. Is it an apple only app?
@ my pleasure! Thanks fot the video, today I’ve made the purchase of a UV32 and until it comes I am studying all that I can find but it is not that much for now. 👍
If it did DMR and could get up to 462 for GMRS that would be a fantastic radio.
Doesn't do DMR but does do 462mhz
They make a dmr version. Dm-32
@@aaronbradshaw3839 Hmmm 🤔
Thank you for making this video. I listened to it in its entirety. It was very helpful!
Why this radio don't appear on Baofeng's official site? There is no official news about this model from Baofeng...
So, if Baofeng does not give information about this model and does not provide after-sales, saying to contact the distributors/sellers, to me it means that this radio IS NOT an original Baofeng as well as many others on the market that have the Baofeng sticker.
@Pabblo_82 Baofeng will "custom build" a radio for anyone who buys enough of them. It's how they operate this they have "official" models and "customer built" models.
They do have a baofeng radio programming app it's the Baofeng tools app it's like $5 to download.
Nice job I just received my radio and really like one of my favorite radios now
PTT should be on other side of radio and this is why I’m not buying it
RH Pro here is locked in a boot loop preventing access to setup menu thus unable to reset. Any clues as to the possible external key reset combo? Otherwise I have a piece of junk with good battery, palm mic charter, etc.
@@philipsalley2658 ...if by "boot loop" you mean the radio is asking for a passnumber, the default is 000000. If it's something else then I'm afraid I don't know.
@@bigwill4423 Boot Loop as turning the radio on it announces baofeng with logo, screen goes blank, then repeats the switch on screen and audio, over and over.
@philipsalley2658 ...I'm afraid this sounds like a terminal fault. If you bought the radio new then I would return it to the seller stating that it is faulty....so sorry for your trouble...hope you get it sorted with the seller.👍
There is a DMUV32 version that is DMR hard to find is it any good compared to TYT or Radioditty
@@aaronhowell4769 I'm sorry but I don't know anything about that model.
Yes i saw it on shopee...the price is about 30% more costly than this one
Its look like for firefighter style radio
@@Neon_Club it certainly looks like it and it's very solidly built but not really for firefighters. Thank you for your comment. 👍😎
You have outdone yourself with this review I will be checking one out and you are the reason I will make the purchase, I think a lot of us have been waiting for someone to review this radio and it’s good that you did so because a lot of us were waiting on the ham geek to take off but never did. 73 KF0PYH
Does Motorola belt clip APX 8000 could match with this Baofeng?
Can it do 245.000Mhz
@CHUCKE19772 and it covers the 1.25 meter band which is 220 to 225 MHz but I'm not sure if it would tx on 245mhz? 🤔
ok
hi have you proramier softqare for the radio by from germany do1lvs
@@vittorioschroeder3704 you can program the radio in chirp by selecting the uv-17 pro GPS radio in there.
Hamgeek APX 8000...but the bag is too short....they should make a cage clip...speaker facing backward...hmm...charging pin facing forward....well, uv 25 for me😁
hello bos, How to connect with Bluetooth? program channel
@@AmirjohnSamadau that is a good question my friend. I was personally unable to connect to the radio via an android phone app. Perhaps there is an apple app for it but I certainly couldn't find one on android play store! 🤔
Why do they put the charging pins in front ?
because apx 8000 also put in the front
@ but whats the advantage, im just wondering
@@Knarf14 ....I don't think there's any real advantage. They just seem to have copied the styling from Motorola? 🤔
ROTFLOL! Personally I never use a "belt clip." Have seen them break...causing a really bad day. Now no radio, or radio broke.
Interesting review Big Will, you are GREAT. Can the radio be considered as a clone of the Motorola APX, Radtel R8000, HAMGEEK APX-8000? What do you think? (Sorry for my English...)
@AlfaFoxtrot-y3b ...I actually have no knowledge of those radios you mention but I've seen others on here refer to them and I can certainly see a physical likeness to the Motorola. It wouldn't be the first time Baofeng have copied the looks of another radio as they've already done it with Quansheng. Thank you for your comment. 👍 P. S. Your English is excellent!
@@bigwill4423 OK Big Will, thank you for your response. Talk to you soon. Bye
Will it be possible to hack this with custom firmware to add more functionality?
@@ricki-bobby .....unfortunately Baofeng don't release firmware updates to the general public so I'm afraid the answer is no.
Yes you'll have to learn how to program tho
But I wanna use it on Gmrs. Boo
It's unknown whether U.S. imported ones will or won't transmit on GMRS/MURS
Hi power is good, but in case of existence of direct conversion receiver which is built on the RDA or Beken chip isn't good. I think 5W is enough and the superheterodyne receiver inside much better. Anyway thanks for the information!
Normally, yes. 5 watts is sufficient. But... I've yet to obtain a radio - even commercial Icoms - that actually transmit at 5 watts VHF or 4 on UHF. So an import 8/10/12 watt HT SHOULD put out the proper 4/5 watts.
What you call the back is the front just like the motorola apx radios and you can use the motorola apx radio holster clip
Thank you for making this. ive been looking at this radio for months with barely any reviews. Thank you
another idiot who should has no license
Its a sh*tty radio, do not buy
Can’t answer that before I watch it no it isn’t 13w
....actually...it is! (And I was as surprised as you were when I saw the results because normally you chuckle when you see Baofengs claims for even 10 watts!) 😲😲😲😁😜 Whiz forward to about 31 minutes into the video if you just want to see the rather startling power test results I got. It's only supposed to be 10 watts but I was getting 13 watts on 2 meters into a 50 ohm dummy load on full power! 😲😲😲
I'm sure it will fit the APX 8000 belt clip
Great review. Clearly Baofeng has made a copy of the Motorola APX 7000/8000 radio for a fraction of the price. It won't even begin to complete with Motorola quality, but it sure looks like a Motorola. I do like the larger radios with bigger batteries so I might give this one a try.
Another excellent and thorough review. Seems like the mechanical engineer was trying to be a bit artsy-fartsy with the case design, rather odd. But can't complain about the performance which is quite impressive. You have a great day sir! 👍
It’s meant to copy the apx 7000 and 8000 series Motorola radios.
Great video, very informative, thank you for checking the 220 band, I am always looking for good 220, here in Richmond Indiana it's very popular. 73's Craig WA2TWF
I notice that, when on air band frequencies, it doesn't display "AM" on the display. I'm also not hearing anything, so I'm wondering if air band is working...
@@lazdnet it does receive airband which is anything between 108 and 136mhz but you will have to be tuned to the frequency of your local airport and not be too far away from it in order to pick anything up. It does not display AM on the screen when tuned to airband frequencies unfortunately.
@@bigwill4423 Thanks, I was able to receive some airband communications as well, so confirming it works! I did have to use a hex editor to edit the first couple addresses in the .xcl file to enable airband, but after doing so, I'm able to program airband frequencies. I also unlocked it for transmit on all frequencies (of course I'll only transmit on the ham bands). Thanks for the great video, 73!
You can show only A or B and eliminate a lot of the clutter on the screen, on the H3. Menu option 36, turn sync off. Still smaller than the fang but cleans it up some.
I enjoyed your video and learned a lot. Love the relaxed mood of the video, just my style! Thanks for the review
@@SwiftGeneration Thank you very much. ❤️
Hi good review is this the best baofeng radio for am air band
@@keithcruickshank5984 not really. All Baofengs that can receive airband are pretty much all the same (as in "not very good") but they do the job if not very well. For best am airband receive a dedicated airband scanner is the best option but if you are on a budget then any Baofeng with am airband receive will do the job and will be a lot cheaper than a dedicated airband scanner. Thank you for your comment and a happy Christmas. 👍😎🧑🎄
It seems good, but like a toy. What do you think if you drop the radio on the floor?
@@radiotory yes, that's the main concern I have with the radio. It just seems lightweight and brittle to me. Some may find it ok but I personally didn't.
Hi Big Will, do you or does anyone here know if Baofeng Uv17 or Uv18 can receive and display DTMF CODES? For example, If i send DTMF code via Uv18 pro max to Quasheng k5/6 model, the audio comes, and it clearly shows on the screen the actual DTMF code. If i send DTMF code from Quasheng to any of my other Baofeng radios, audio comes but it does not show or display actual DTMF codes on the screen like Quansheng radio. Could you please make a short video on this topic please?
@@sekibulja-fu3bv it's not something I know a lot about or have experimented with to be honest but perhaps others on here will be more knowledgeable on the subject than I am? Thank you for your comment.
@bigwill4423 Thank you for your swift reply big Will. I have been searching all week to see if I'm missing something in the settings of my Baofeng radios as they do not show DTMF codes when receiving.... I don't know if you have Quansheng k5/6 radio to experiment and see what I actually mean? Wishing you happy festive seasons and looking forward to watch your new videos! Regards
18:39 You can do it on the radio under the menu ‘Radio Setting > ANI-Edit’ rather than with a programming cable.
Another excellent and thorough review. Nice little radios. PMR446 radios are illegal here in the US although it is perfectly legal to talk on those frequencies if you are a licensed ham. The PMR channels are close to the US 70cm calliing frequency 446.0 for simplex. No repeaters to interfere with around there. Have a merry Christmas! 👍
@@BrayJaythe2nd Thank you, and a very merry Christmas to you too. 👍😎
