Property Ladder Series 04, Episode 11 | Sarah Beeny
Follow property speculators as they give advice to eager people looking to enter the property market, and rehab UK real estate in the hopes of turning profit. This week Sarah Beeny visits David and Trisha Thompson in Sudbury, Suffolk who bought a Grade II listed building with no idea what it would take to develop it. Will they be able to pull this project off with the every growing list of eccentric ideas or will the rising market save yet another naive developer? Where are David and Trisha now? Sad news I'm afraid... while there's no update on what happened to this house, their son Daniel - briefly seen at 11:12 - died at age 30. When the show originally aired in 2005 it was dedicated to him according to bit.ly/2SDqSe3.

    Always the same story. Almost makes me wonder whether the participants aren't vetted and chosen based on who is less inclined to listen to Sarah's advice for the sake of entertainment value. Personally, I love it when developers listen to Sarah and end up with a successful development.

    |The woman is stupid. She ruined the finish on the tub herself with her developing chemicals, but she thinks that other people renting flats will float above the floors and use rubber knives on the worktops and bow down in worship of their aesthetic sensibilities.

    Three MALE assessors of the house and not ONE noticed that the bathtub is totally useless for anyone but a gymnast who never cleans and has no kids?

  • @FigaroHey
    @FigaroHey Місяць тому

    I hate those big, corner bathtubs. They take up way too much floor space. They cost more to fill, they cool down rapidly because of so much surface area of the tub (and usually are quite shallow, at least in my experience). They are harder to clean because you've got to reach across a big space to get to the far side of the tub to scrub it. A tub that big is arguably less safe for small children, as they are further from a wall to grab onto and pull themselves up if they go under the water. They are horrible and overwhelm the bathroom with this big monstrosity. As soon as I see one of those, I cross that house/flat off my list. They are about as practical as a round bed. There is a reason why bathtub shapes have not changed in over a century: the standard design works best. Novelty designs in bathtubs or beds are a waste of money and an annoyance that just has to be changed when people start living real life.

    They probably had to live in that house for a LONG time, having spent the profits on the sale of their other house to decorate this one in ugly, clashing, unsellable 'taste.'

    The Safari room (ghastly, and hardly 'neutral') looks like you can't open the door without hitting the sofa, so where would they have put a bed?

  • @sophiamcl

    Those tiles in the kitchen - they are SO COMMON! I see them in almost every episode of Location, Location, Location or Escape to the Country (though usually with a blue in the mix). I sometimes wonder if the UK even HAS any other options for kitchen tiles. And in a big kitchen like that, not having a table means that the cook will be isolated. Sarah is right: people tend to gather in the kitchen. Nowhere to sit means they will be standing around underfoot if they come in to be near the cook, and the cook will feel isolated and cut off from guests and family. Not going with a table is a stupid choice in a FAMILY home where the parents are going to be wanting to keep an eye on the kids and the kids are going to want to hang out in the kitchen.

    In the US, I have the feeling that the producers would have tactfully 'helped' the woman get her dentures fitted so they don't click and rattle every time she speaks... Ah, the joys of UK socialized dentistry.

  • @FigaroHey

    You see it again and again and again on Location, Location, Location, or Escape to the Country: older couples who want their 'dream house,' but the problem is that it's a house they dreamed of when they were young and fit, when they had several children at home, etc. It's an aspirational house for a young family, not something they should be taking on potentially 5-10 years before they die. Often, they have a fantasy of having not only their children somehow using the house, but their children's spouses and children. So it's a fantasy of having 'all the family here' but for Christmas, maybe - realistically, once or twice a year they will fill that house with family (and no thought of how much WORK and expense it is to clean and prepare beds and meals, etc. for a house full of people). But they go ahead and buy a house with that fantasy in mind. Forget that their children are currently taking holidays abroad and are unlikely to want to spend two weeks summer holidays in a village with their parents. Forget the fact that their children's spouses also have parents who will expect visits. Forget the fact that their children sometimes live on the other side of the planet and are not going to be coming home for Sunday dinners. They have this 'dream' of a huge family in a huge house, and they buy it at age 65. I'd love to see a follow-up when they are 70 or 75. Are they still rattling around in the 'dream'?
