Making a dress pattern from an old dress is quite straightforward - just cut up the dress and draw round the pieces, not forgetting to add the necessary seam and hem allowances. This video shows how, using a toddler's dress from a charity shop, and at the end showing the new dress made with the home-made pattern.

I appreciate that you are straightforward with your DIY pattern making based on another dress. Your accent made me smile as I listened intently :) It all made great sense, now I'll put it to use! I've been using an old dress but had feared cutting it up but it is so much easier to cut versus unpick, so I am going to do it and have a new pattern! Thank you!

Your new dress is absolutely gorgeous! I thought it a shame to cut up the old one until I saw the replacement. I was surprised ( and relieved) that you didn't unpick anything, just cut and added seam allowances, so simple when you know how! Thanks for the excellent demo

You've inspired me to cut the sleeves out of a thin suede jacket to make the shoulders narrower, all good so far. Just hoping the sleeves fit back in (I did sew up some of the side seam to bring the bottom of the armhole inwards too). If it doesn't work I'll make a bag out of the remnants :)

Very nicely done, Muv. I think I'll use the same technique for some old dresses of mine. Have a wonderful day.

Lovely video. I will put this into practice for my 3 yr old granddaughter, using an older but well-fitting dress for a pattern. Just to agree that unpicking and pressing would be a waste of precious time. Not only that, but someone else's seam allowance may be varied and uneven. You may indeed have to make notes to remind you it is, say, 1/4 inch allowance right side, 1/2 inch left, and other quirks. By adding your own seam allowances you add your own preferences.

Great video. Please clarify if I have this wrong. My understanding is that the sides of the sleeve are “wonky” because the back of the sleeve is a different size than the front of the sleeve. The arm holes are the same. So in your clip the right side has a longer slope than the left and that is correct right?

Yes, you are right. There is more fullness in the back of the sleeve to give ease of movement. In the video, the right side is the back.
