      I once upon a time knew a guy who was so proud of his new snake skin boot that he wouldn't wear them, he would set them up high on the dog house for everyone to see, and he slammed on the brakes and his boots cracked the windshield, be smarter than him, he also once bought a monkey for his wife and thought I can get the company to pay for it, so he had it written up as a monkey wrench for $100 back in the early 80"s that didn't go over well either

    Rich, everyone is a expert as I have personally witnessed myself. Working in the logging camps in southeast Alaska gave me the knowledge... that no two trucks fall together the same way. But that said, this is the first time for me to see the transmission come in from the top. They need to invent a narrow ratchet strap thats got the same strength and yet not get in the way.. I know you have done this a few times and even so found the test runs didn't really go like planned on the final step. I used to find myself holding my breath till a bolt would start. Thank you for the most real install going yet on the internet and congrats on making this a truck again. Heaven forbid some other hidden agenda is lurking behind the scenes

      There is. I have a pile of half width ratchet straps that are almost the same rating.
      In saying that, an actual lifting strap is way thinner and easier to work with but you can't adjust the length

  • @bobbob-fg5wy
    @bobbob-fg5wy 2 роки тому +38

    FYI, you can ratchet strap the cab back over centre. You can also use a ratchet strap to stop the cab lowering over center if the hydraulics are leaky.

    The K model was the most beautiful truck ever made in my opinion back in 1973. The only KW I ever drove, however, was a 1990 T-600 "Anteater". The last cabover I drove was a 1990 Freightliner - the one that I was almost killed in and the one that ended my OTR career.
    Cabovers have a faulty design that make them dangerous to drive. A side impact could twist the cab beyond the capabilities of the cab locks to do what they were designed to do, allowing forward momentum to flip the cab over where the driver can be seriously injured or killed.
    This is what happened to me on April 28, 1992. 3 days after the accident I came to in the hospital and was told that they "lost me" 3 times. Every bone in my body above the waste was either broken or separated and a fractured skull blinded me in the right eye (ending my career). I spent 2 years recuperating and had to start my working career at the bottom - very depressing after investing so much time, money, and effort.
    Even if I could drive again, I'd never go near a cab over again.

    Always have a safety catch chain on the cab to frame when going over center with the cab. There can be air in the hydraulic lines. In free fall the cab can pull the cab rams apart.

    • @simonhenry8598
      @simonhenry8598 2 роки тому +2

      We have a similar but different set up here in the uk 99% of the trucks we use are cab overs that are literally a dash, seat then bed in the back, when the cabs go over centre it’s alarmingly sketchy lol the best I’ve seen are the pneumatic electric pump operated systems you can control it from bottom to top

    I held my breath when you said that 13 speed was the same as the 10, "just 3 extra gears." The back half of the trans on a 13 speed has a whole additional set of gears and an extra shifter for splitting, and is a whole lot bigger than the back half on a 10. Guess you found that out. . .!!!! Hopefully by now you've also remembered/discovered that you need a different shift knob mechanism and additional nylon air line as you now have an extra piston to move on the back half for the splitter!!

    That used to be my job when we were putting new engines and transmissions in semi trucks. Oh to be 19 again and driving around with an engine almost heavier than the forklift. OSHA would not have been pleased. I can still hear the boss directing me with a Cummins 400 hanging from the forks. "Tilt the boom just a smidge forward", "sorry no can do" "than hop off and come help me" "sorry, no can do" "why?" "Cuz the steer tires aren't touching the ground but now and then!" "Ah crap we got to take the front tire off then so we can get closer". 😂 Lol

    Hey. She’s looking great. Tech tip for future trans installs.
    Cut the heads off a couple of long bolts and thread them into the back of the engine. Use them as guides/studs through the trans bell housing as you walk the trans up to the engine, helps keep everything square and lined up.
    Throw some grease on the said studs and be real careful to keep your angles good and the weight off the studs so you dont bend them or worse break the back of the engine. This helps aligning the plates for the last portion of the trans install.

    For alignment of transmission to engine, I cut bolt heads off of two or three bolts. Grind a cone on end of headless bolts. Then thread the headless bolts into engine. Then slip transmission on to headless bolts. Slide transmission to engine. Start other bolts
    Then remove headless bolts. You are good to go.

    Great stuff, ONE recommendation, Amazon sells these amazing head lamps, like 2 for 20, last most the day, I wear one all the time now while working, can see so much better.

    I'm at work right now putting in a trans in a personal hauler. Doing it on the ground from underneath with absolutely no room to see, move or work. I'm jealous you guys can stand there and put bolts in! Cab overs are great for that reason!

    Keep up the good work. Doing one hell of a job. I found that it’s a little easier to hang the clutch on the trans and then bolt it to flywheel after the trans is installed you don’t need as much room to slide them up and down that way. Just giving you some ideas for the next time
