Modifications to the popular Polish poncho tent

  • I bought a set of 2 ex-military Polish ponchos, as many knows, they will together make a small lavvo type tent.
    I have done some modifications to it, so its no longer ponchos, or poncho tent. Now its just a small canvas lavvo or tipi if you want.

    Hey, I never supposed that somebody outside Poland would like to use that stuff. They are heavy as hell and totally old fashioned :-). At the same time they are really climatic, sitting under them makes me thinking about all my night in forest as a child. My mother bought one of them in 1989 or in 1990 and she was using it to 2005. Then I got it as a kind of family "heritage". When I went to Sweden for studies I took my poncho with me, some of people were looking at me with strange smiles like "omg Vad är detta?" But I felt always proud for having my old, good stuff. Thanks for this video, it made me even more happy for being an owner of my tent.

      +Tom Sol It is a good product, and as you say, climatic condition in it, very good for winter camp here in the north. We have similar type of canvas tent in the Norwegian Army, not as much in use anymore, but also good, but that one is made of several sheets making a bigger tent and weighing even more. So this Polish type is ideal for one or two. I use mine with a woodstove in the winter as you can see on my channel.

    Those ponchos are really very useful, especially in Polish forests, because their color matches with color of typical foliage in such forests, making users invisible, as long as they stay still. And on summer camp me and my friend were able to make drafty hut using them, what helped much during rather hot July days. Still, your idea is very smart, and i hope it will serve you for long time.

    Really nice modification job and, as always, it's great to see the snowy scenery. If your zipper is a two way (able to zip down from the top as well as up from the bottom) then you can vent off some of the excess heat and, with small gaps at the bottom, ensure good oxygen flow in the tent.

      Good, put a good quality stove jack in, cause I did not, and used fireblanket as an improvized stove jack and burned my one zip in the arm hole and some of the tent fabric around.. Luckily I had some more fabric to fix the damage. :)

      Hi, the seller informed me about this before I bought it. on the shoulder flaps it was some marks on mine, and it said 160-170 something. There should be 3 sizes: 160-170, 170-180 and 180-190. This numbers are cm hight of user it should be issued to.

    When yours is about 1,60-1,70m in height, it's by no means the smallest but definitely the biggest version ^^ The second "biggest" size is only about 1,40m in height and the smallest version is even smaller than that... :)
    EDIT: I thought you meant the height when it's built up already but you're talking about the measurements just overall when it's flattened out. Ahhh, yes then it's the smallest version, very nice to hear that it's still roomy enought, because my order with the middle-ranged size of this just has been shipped today, so I won't have any worries when you even get along with the smallest!

    A sideline topic, as I find no video of this topic.
    I haven't seen you in the Norse mountains (or Taro in his Swiss Alps) using snow melt water bushcraft. Admittedly, most videos are short day bushcraft sessions.
    A spread out black plastic garbage bag on the ground with snow atop, in the sunlight, will gain clean snow melt water.
    Just looking at your initial set up of this poncho tent, got me to realize making a 3 (tripod) or 4 (square) log set up, spread a black plastic garbage bag across them, and have a sunked interior for snow melt and water. You have a large gallon (multi-liter) water cistern of clean snow melt water.
    Even more, build the snow melt log design near the campfire, and you have maximum solar (day) and campfire (day and night) snow melt water operations and water cistern capacity.
    When breaking base camp, you can use the water to fill up all canteens and bottles, then use the remaining water for totally watering down the campfire ashes, making sure that the entire camp fire is totally extinguished.

      John Lord I think that is because most of us do have a full time job and family, and when we finally get out for several days we like to enjoy that timeinstead of making a video out of it. At least thats how it is for me.
      In Norway there are plenty of fresh clean water, year around. Never had any issues. Maybe been tirsty for a couple of hours the most.

      Glad to share, it weighs about 7 pounds, so its a bit heavy for the size compared to a modern type, but its an excellent winter shelter, and for me I put stuff in a sledge anyway in the winter. And its possible to use wood stove, I will show that later when the snow comes.

    This looks great and cozy. I like that stove system in the small enclosed space. You can heat up the tent while cooking your food without having to burn wood. I'll have to research it. How much does the doubled up tent weigh as well as the tent pole and pegs?

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  10 років тому

      They say 3,4 kg, or about 7 pounds included plugs and pole. I have removed some material, and added some, so I think they weight has not changed to much. The pole and plugs are all of aluminium and does not weigh much. Its of course heavier than a small nylon tent, but if you like canvas or want to have a winter tent with some heat source inside, this is by my opinion a good option.
      I will do a update later one showing different heating options.
      thanks for watching!

      Canvas will never be completly waterproof. In the army we used 111hiker primus to heat up our 7-piece 8 man tents, and at the same time this heat preventet rain to penetrate. We never put any waterproofer on those canvas tents.
      To comparison a modern tent may have a waterproof shell, but will be moist inside regardless of weather and temperature, after a few days your sleeping bag and all your stuff are moist. This is my experience, canvas tent with heating is better that way. But heavier, darker, not waterproof....

    I keep seeing in my minds eye... a three sided pole frame to use with this tent so there is no pole in the center.. I saw this video and bought them with the idea of doing what you have done.. but I don't want the pole.. so Im still trying to come up with something that will come apart, be strong and light...
    I look forward to seeing what you have chosen to do about stove pipe through the side...

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  9 років тому

      Hi, I also do use a tripod instead of the centerpole to get more room. Its quite simple. If you do the effort of making a 5-pod, you will get better stretch on the fabric and less flapping in the wind. I use saplings, put up the tent as ment to fist, then you have something to measure your poles after.
      The woodstove system is very simple, I will do that video as soon as the snow gets here. Its almost overkill with a woodstove in this tent, it get warm very fast and keep the heat inside much better than a modern type lavvo.
      Let me know if you find a good solution of poles to carry.

    Would you recommend these for temperatures between -10 to 5 with a normal bed roll and british army arctic sleeping bag?

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  10 років тому

      I have personally spent nights below -20C in canvas tent similar to this, and that with sleeping bag from the Marshall-help program after the WWII. I think my bag was stamped 1949. As long as you have some heating source(we used a 111 Hiker) in there, it will be fine. I dont know the british arctic bag, but if it say arctic it should be more than good for -10-5C. The most inmportant thing is to be insulated from the frozen ground, With a good old sleeping mat, I guess you will be fine. Hope this make sens.

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  10 років тому +1

      Hi Rocky!
      In a tent like this you will never be completly closed in, there will allways be some draft from under the sides and thru openings, and even thru the canvas material. And if you burn something that do not give off toxic gases or smoke, you will be fine. In the army we had some similar tents of canvas, and with 7-8 men inside, we used a Optimus 111 for heat, burning kersosine. or just plain denatured alcohol. And that have been done for more than 50-60 years now, without any problems.
      You just have to watch it, never go to sleep without someone watching it.

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  10 років тому +1

      To be honest I dont know to much about Bergen. But usually the whole west coast are filled with rivers, and this rivers come from mountain lakes. Bergen is the place in Norway with most rain during the year, and its at the coast. It depends on what type of terrain you would like. For forest type of terrain you should go inland, landing at main airport Gardermoen(Oslo) and you can practicly walk into to forest. Mountains, west or north of the country. Let me know your plans and I can help you with locations.

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  10 років тому

      In this video I`m using a trangia alcohol burner. Simple and effective.
      I tried a woodstove made out of an ammo can. I did not insulate well enough around the "arm hole" so I burned the canvas during my test. So I had to repair it :) But with a multifuel burner as a nova, omnifuel or others you will be toasty warm! A simple burner like Trangia or a pop can type will also work as an ok heater. Even just with some candles I got the temperature several degrees up.
