I have both tents and use depends on situation.. I took the pup tent and split the seams on what i call the front shelter half and installed zippers.. This allows tent to be used like a Baker tent ..

Thank you for this detailed review! But when it comes to making a choice, I will have a look at your other videos. When it comes to crossing a mountain range or staying in very cold weather conditions, I need something that suits me all the way around - think weight AND versatility AND ease of use. Again, thank you.

That shoulder cape portion always goes on the inside, as a tent or rain gear. Its purpose is to insulate your shoulders, it's a dry piece of fabric between you, and the wet poncho.
Also I've camped in the palatka in torrential rain, and it's very watertight. The fibers swell and prevent rain getting through. I used mine this past weekend and the outside looked soaked through, but the inside of the fabric was dry to the touch. Pretty cool.
I've got a Russian Plash, an East German one, and the Polish palatka, and the teepee shape is by far the better design, at least for tramping in the woods looking like a Hobbit. 😂😂

Had the Lavvu for a year or so. It's a nice tent. I had the largest size. A telescoping paint pole makes a difference for set up.
The downside of the Lavvu is the button closure (zipper mod would be a good idea.).
My big reason for getting rid of it was mostly due not liking the open bottom.
Upgraded to a USGI Tcop tent.

I remember a hot summer day on a music festival when I found 5! dogs in my pup tent. I knew not one of them. They just spontaniously formed a pack and invaded because it was the only place offering shade and bearable temps. Everybody else came with a plastic tent and those were more harm than good. the climate under canvas is the only reason to carry the weight and bulk.

I got both . Have not use the lavvu yet in the woods just some test setups. The pup is heavier but you can do a half, A flaps open , A flap closed and one side porched . Porched is great during the day when light rain just sit under it. Lavvu seems stuffy it might be better for cool fall nights. Half lavvu seems ok. Here one for you i call it my plash-lavvu condo two palakas and lavvu as one . the two lavvu 5 feet apart and one palaka as a wall and the other as a porch. It is bigger the a modded pup with zippers.

Well im 49 years old and built a 40 call ammo can Stove for My Shelter half tent.... I run My pipe through either end where it snaps and use a couple sticks as spreaders to keep fabric off the pipe. U plan in putting in a stove jack but just haven't yet. ( Too buisy using My tent lol) I would always advise a ground cloth to keep the moisture out of the tent. I do a horseshoe config around My Maxpedition falcon 2. I'm thinking about adding 2 ft. Of Canvas around bottom of tent with more Snaps then adding longer poles! And maybe a window . I know what I want Im still experimenting with Mine... 2 trips this Past winter down in the 20s My mmss took care of that great one or two person ( get out there tent) I plan on buying a Lavuu also .gear video

Hi! Good video. I like this tent also. Sligh note. In polish we don't have and use that word: lavvu ;-). We speak Polish for it: pałatka (read: p.a.w.a.t.k.a, better check the pronunciation of a word on translator) Lavvu.. is a Sami tent, a kind of tipi, lower tipi, more resistant to strong wind and this is a word from the Sami language (Scandinavian Lapland). Funny journey of words, verbal/naming mess. We (Polish people) made the military raincoat which is called "pałatka" (two are made into a tent), and there is a word for it in English: tipi, tepee but almost everyone calls it: "lavvu" - Sams tent. So the name "polish lavuu" give's U polish sams tipi/tent ;-)

I own 3 shelter halfs with ropes and poles plus a big tarp for a ground sheet. The extra parts are because canvas rots and mice love to eat it. I hope to have one complete tent. I would love to tell you about it but when I used it in the Infantry, I slept hard after a hard days training, I don't remember much. I have no doubt that it works in warm to cool weather, it probably would not work in arctic conditions without mods.

Just a point of order 2:39 in. It might be harder to find but I’m guessing that there are a lot more surplus US shelter halves available someplace in Europe than there are Polish surplus here in the US. The US army has had HUGE occupying forces in Europe since the 40s and shared military equipment with all sorts of NATO allies , not a lot of Polish regiments in the New World

I have both and each has it’s good and bad things about it. The pup has heavyweight stakes and tie down ropes. I would trust it in heavy winds more so than the Lavuu. The Lavuu is lighter and can be used as a poncho. It’s taller than the pup also. However, I’m 6’ 2” and fit better inside the pup than the Lavuu. My Lavuu is a number two so really you can’t fit two men in it comfortably where as the pup you can. I love both and have modded the pup by installing a fly that zips closed. I own two of each tent wit one each left stock and one each modified.

the BW pup tent is pretty much the same but too short and narrow in comparison. Even a size 1 Polish tent offers more... But if you want the Flecktarn, it's what you have to deal with^^ I would recommend to buy one more shelter half and making the whole thing longer. From my own experience and I am not very tall.

In an apples-to-apples comparison, price and availability are most important unless one apple is materially superior. Not the case here although I dig the Lavvu's rain poncho capability and value versatility in things and people. Will have to watch this a couple more times to decide. What's your hat's arrowed logo mean? Simple plastic tarp as ground cover?

So I’m eyeballing things And I’m wondering if there is a way to fit a Lavuu onto the end of a US pup tent ... it feels like you could merge the two together into a canvas igloo. Not sure how that would handle or what advantages that would be but it would be a tent with a great lay down and sit up areas. I double you could sleep 4 in this configuration but you could sleep Three quite comfortably

@@MakersMovementDIY with my kit instead of the issue poles that come with the pup tent we use half length rods with either a threaded nut or rod welded into the end. It’s much more light weight and it means additional rods can be added above the pup tent to the end poles for rain covers or to provide added tension to the support system. Additionally that threaded nut in the bottom means one can fashion a base of some sort for soggy or snowy conditions . Just a couple strips of flat aluminum and a short bold and your poles won’t be sinking into the ground when you tighten your tents stakes and guy lines
