I'm loving listening to your interpretations of this album and what it means to you both, and you know by now how complex Pink Floyd are, definitely not for the casual listener. The message of enslavement and oppression in this album perfectly sums up society and humanity in general not only in the 1970's but pre 70's and also post 70's, nothing has changed✌

In your comment you hit on something that has come to mind many times when listening to Pink Floyd's music: how deep, true and accurate their lyrics were. But especially at what age! The Animals album is from 1977, Wish you Were Here is from 1975 and The Dark Side of the Moon is even from 1973! None of them were even thirty years old then!!! And all of those lyrics are still relevant today - it's amazing how timeless they are and deliver a message! It takes my breath away every time!
But the truth is that the theme of Animals is inspired by an equally famous work: 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell...

With "The Final Cut" that came out after "The Wall", there's like 2 good songs because Roger Waters' ego hijacked the album and he pretty much did it himself. It shows.
However, with Gilmour back as the main creative force on "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" & " The Division Bell". Both of those are beyond marvelous & they came out long after Roger was gone. And it shows.
You have listened to the live versions of many of those songs already. They are some of the best things they ever did.

This is like reading a history book. They say we learn from history, but it's clear that we don't. We keep repeating the same mistakes over and over. I hope human beings wake up and cast off their "dogs". It's such a thought-provoking piece of art and I hope others, like you, see the dangers of following blindly. my favourite track, from this album. the reason for this album is the rise of punk rock. they decided to create an album with less mellow sounds and to get back to being a commentary on society's darker side. it's many fans' favourite album. the only real difference between '77 and now, is that more people understand these things, now. again, i love your reactions

This song is an epic thriller, a commentary about tyranny written by Waters. The outro by Gilmour is a fanfare (a triumphal march to celebrate the win against the dogs, meaning that the sheep now are the new watchdogs of the superior power). The lyrics are loosely based on "Animal Farm" by Orwell (when the pigs - at the end of the novel - stand up right on two feet, becoming like their former master, the man). It's raw, gritty and modern at the same time (the laser guns before the coda are incredible). The highlights of the song are the peaceful intro by Wright, a bucholic and delicate electric piano - you can literally see the sheep grazing over there - and in contrast the ominous lead guitar by Gimour, like an axe. Also, this is one of the best vocal performance by Roger Waters.

  • @roadkill7314

As much as i equate the greatness of Pink Floyd with David Gilmour I certainly must acknowledge the absolute genius of Roger Waters. These band members are just all legendary. And you're100% corrected Andrei, most of us are absolutely sheep!

    • @donbrogan3158

How can you equate the greatness of Floyd with not the main song writer?!

    • @roadkill7314
      @roadkill7314 10 місяців тому

@donbrogan3158 Of course I agree. Waters was a lyrical genius and a good performer. But David Gilmour was more out front and is a genius performer; as much as I believe Waters thought it was it was not primarily "his" band. And Pink Floyd had some pretty good stuff post Waters. That being said I think Waters is a great talent.

Thanks for your reaction to these songs. They are musically and lyrically sophisticated.
Pink Floyd created the album, Animals, based loosely on George Orwell's wonderful allegorical short novel, Animal Farm.
A famous quotation you may appreciate: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana, writer and philosopher
Another rock anthem on a similar theme of history repeating itself would be The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" from the album, Who's Next, released in August 1971.

Andrei's comments are well-founded. The answer is YES ! Pink Floyd is a thinking-man's band ! It is intellectual music, that needs to be chewed and swallowed and regurgitated and analyzed ! The lyrics are as important as the excellence of the music. They have ALWAYS been political and cutting edge. That is part of their brilliance ! Thanks for reviewing this one !

The album Animals is loosely based on George Orwell's book Animal Farm written in 1945 . The album cover harkens back to Upton Sinclair's book, The Jungle, published in 1906. So it's true, same problems, different era. Pink Floyd is about human nature, which doesn't change.

The first music I can remember that I really enjoyed was Elvis (see how old I am!). Then the Beatles and the Rolling Stones sort of took over, followed later by the likes of Led Zeppelin. But I never listened to Pink Floyd. I heard Brick in the Wall, didn't like it, so I never bothered with them again.
Fast forward fifty years after I retired with a lot of free time on my hands and I started listening to the reaction channels on YT. One day I saw one of the reactors listening to Comfortably Numb at the Pulse and I thought - whaaat!! I couldn't believe how good it was. I had to know if it was a one-off or not so I googled PF music and listened to some more of their music. It didn't take long before I realised what an idiot I had been all my life. Some of the best music I have ever heard and I never gave it a chance.
Still, as they say, better late than never. Biggest regret - I never went to Pulse. What an experience that would have been. Biggest joy - listening to them for half an hour with a beer before I go to bed.

You don't have to say out loud what you are thinking, it's clear that you are 'awake' as are more and more people in the last couple of years. The reset will only work if two thirds of the sheep go along with it. 👍

Splendid reaction, one of your best, you had such a great discussion! I have nothing to add to your interpretation of the song, you nailed it, but as always, I really enjoy watching you discover this music. It reminds us old dogs who've been listening for decades how we felt when we first discovered it, it helps keep it all fresh, so thank you for that! You're going deeper, but you're not done yet, lots more PF to explore!

This last and epic major song, "Sheep", contains a hopeful message because though it warns us of what will happen if good men do nothing while we are carved up and destroyed by our enemies, it also suggests the Sheep have woke up and had enough and react with vengeance against those who are destroying us.

The beginning of the lyrics "the lord is my shepherd" is in fact the beginning verses of the "lord's prayer." up until the lyrics starting "with bright knives." which are by Roger.
You have to read the novel Animal Farm it is an allegory on dictatorship where the animals take over the farm from their human oppressors but in the end the animals that rise to power oppress the other animals worse than the humans did it inspired the album Animals Floyds take on the social situation in the 70's but it resonates today and always will.

5:23. "Meek and obedient you follow the leader. Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel." For those who don't know, Floyd are referring to a Judas Goat, which is a goat, trained to lead sheep to the slaughterhouse. If the sheep were too frightened to move, or refusing to go down the narrow corridor, the goat would be let into the corridor (ahead of the sheep), and walk towards the slaughterhouse doors. The sheep, being sheep (thinking it was now safe), would then follow the goat down into the corridor, where, near the end, a gate would be opened, the goat would disappear through it, and then slammed shut. By then, the sheep would be hemmed in, and too far down the corridor to turn back, that's when the slaughterhouse doors would open. Judas Goats are not very common, now, but are still used, in some countries, around the world. And that, sad to say, is what's happening these days, as many people are lead by film stars, pop stars, sport stars, whatever, until, (cue Floyd), they realise, "THINGS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM.", and they get what they "...GET FOR PRETENDING THE DANGER'S NOT REAL."
