The reason the dogs are dead is because they were kind of the henchmen like corporate raiders for the pigs (politicians and gluttons) in this album. So the sheep revolted against the pigs and did away with the dogs because they were basically tired of being ruled over constantly! "Demented avengers marched cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream"!! That's the line in the song where the sheep had had enough! The strange speaking in the middle of the song is an altered version of the 23rd psalm about fearing no evil!
Dogs, pigs and sheep represent types of people so there were no innocent dogs killed in this song!!

My favorite Pink Floyd Album, and my second favorite piece of music on that album; Dogs being #1, but both are incredible pieces of music. I think this one is gonna get a lot of views.

Sheep was the last of the 3 major songs on this album which means you'll need to check out both Dogs and Pigs, (3 different ones), to fully understand and experience what Pink Floyd was driving at when they made this album.

Probably Floyd's most progressive sounding album of all...and arguably their best. Drives my pet pooch scatty , not surprisingly 'Dogs' in particular. Also being released in '77 , has a somewhat punky memory for me. Prefer the original recording to the recent new mix , my dog prefers neither !! 😀 Great reaction Jana and Nathan. 😍

Read Animal Farm and you will get the concept! Great read and easy to get through. Was required reading in high school.

I probably would've mentioned the connection to George Orwell's "Animal Farm", would've made the "Pigs, Dogs, Sheep" thing make more sense :P This is one of my favourite Floyd tunes too, though more for the goosebump-inducing synth chords and the great atmospheric stuff. The guitar part at the end is a super satisfying melodic resolution too.

The last minute of sheep could go on for another five minutes and I'd be so happy.

Along with Dogs, amongst my favourite Floyd tracks - Pigs less so. The album is of course a concept based on George Orwell's Animal Farm. The album joins the previous three albums at the top of my ranking of Floyd albums.

Yeah, PF *were* originally a psych band, and they held on to some of those traits. But I'd argue that by this time most of that had been left behind and the band that emerged on Dark Side -- a commercially oriented stadium rock group -- had fully emerged and replaced it.

The album Animals is Loosely based on George Orwell's novel Animal Farm. Which mostly alluded to Stalin and those atrocities which were soon followed by Hitler and then Mao.
And the message that history always repeats.
    It's repeating once again.
    🤠🏞️🐂

Hi Shufflers. Dave from The Smoke. I'm with you - a really good track. Love Rick Wright's keyboards early on, right through to that infectious Gilmour guitar riff at the end. Have to say that I prefer their two previous albums, but Sheep is definitely the highlight for me on Animals.

Listen again, and really listen to the lyrics. Bear this in mind: The pigs are government controlling oligarchs, the dogs are the back-stabbing ruthless big commercial men and the sheep are us. One day the sheep WILL rise up. This album is so relevant today, it's like they predicted the future (or maybe they knew that George Orwell was on to something?).

love Sheep. Super catchy at times. Animals is my #1 Floyd record, although I have others I love a lot too of course (Atom Heart and Obscured By Clouds namely).

This track stands out for its bass line, for the voice which blends into a synth note, but also for Rick Wright's piano introduction, which literally goes through your brain from left to right.
Pink Floyd knew how to use mixing consoles so well that these consoles became like a 5th member of the band.
They could spend hours and hours in the studio, before achieving the desired result.
They are like craftsmen who refine their work almost to the extreme, before presenting it to the public.
A bit like James Cameron who took 13 years before releasing the sequel to Avatar, which he wanted to be “perfect”.
Fortunately, Pink Floyd had a faster work flow than James Cameron.

FYI...the bass on both Pigs and Sheep was done by the incredible David Gilmour, with Roger Waters playing rhythm guitar.
