It's my favorite so far out of all three. The anime inspiration/homage was definitely felt, but even as someone who doesn't watch much anime, I appreciated it.
The "cop out" in the end was Heavily foreshadowed throughout the book, and the magic system was designed to facilitate it. Design even throw out Cosmere referances Itended to remind you it's possible. I figured this was how things will end when Izzy recapped the Seasons of regret Yumi missed.
Nice review! I really liked this book! It was an easy 5/5 for me, because of the characters, the visuals of the setting, the magic system, the plot and one particular prominent side character :) I felt similar about Brandon chickening out at the end, but after letting it sink in for a few days, I found that I was ok with the way he handled it, because of the unique perspective into Realmatic theory that the main characters just do not have. The humor was great too. But mostly the characters and their development. I would give SP1 and SP3 a 5/5, and SP2 a 4/5. I was not as hyped for the second one and I didn’t connect to the characters the way I did in the other books, but it was still an enjoyable story.
All good points I would also rank SP1 and SP3 the same I think I like the plot and comedy more in SP1 but I connect with the characters more in SP 3 so they both shine in different ways
I was enjoying it a lot, especially during the penultimate chapter of part 3. Then part 4 hit, where the plot just kind of went off the rails a bit for me. I still liked it, but I was hoping for less plot shenanigans than what we got after that. The ending also left me very conflicted, I don't mind what we got but I think there was a more fitting ending. The art was one of the best parts, really helped me connect to the characters. It's a pretty good book, just a little wonky with the last quarter. A very solid 4/5.
I agree after part 3 the plot kinda lost me, but I still enjoyed it. I didn't even mention the art but I liked it too, it has been my favorite art of the 3 so far+
Amazing video, I really like your review of the book without any spoilers, I've been wanting to read it for a while and this is really making me want to pick it up even more, think I'll buy it soon. Nice job! Also I'm wondering if you have any all time favourite Sanderson books that you would recommend to new readers off his work?
For a new reader I would probably suggest starting with mistborn if you want to read a trilogy and if you want a stand alone warbreaker. When I first started reading adult fiction in 2019 after not reading for many years that was what I started with and it was great. I have also reccomended it to a few friends that don't read and they loved it. So I would say mistborn
vague light spoilers ---------------- I v much disagree about sanderson "chickening out". given many of the themes of the book, it would have been kinda stupid if it ended where you're thinking. But sure it's still up to everyone's individual taste. It is interesting that he anticipated that in the the teleplay and some people thinking a sad ending is more realistic.
Great discussion here. I highly recommend Elantris. I had similar thoughts about Secret Project #2. This was a fun read.
