I want to rewatch Wolfs Rain but don't think I can emotionally handle it. This score tho is AWESOME and elevates the show with so much emotion. The only knock I have on Wolf's Rain is that its not as good as Cowboy Bebop, but then again, nothing is.

I read it the first time back in my college years (2008ish). I recently picked up the Urthus book, and im going back with a better understanding of the language. The Alzabo Soup podcast is also a good post chapter read along.

I rarely comment but this was a great video. Awesome to see other people getting into anime for the same reason I did... Used to have a completely different perception of anime a few years ago... Then, after a Google search asking for "weird, dreamlike, David Lynch kind of shows", I found Serial experiments Lain. The rest is history :D

I think we lovers of mindfuck must've watched all the "entry level" mindfuck animes: Evangelion, Lain, Ergo Proxy, Haibane Renmei, Rahxephon....I'm not "chasing" it, I miss them and my top favorite one TO THIS DAY remains Shinsekai Yori. I'll never stop advertising that underrated show that gets hate for a certain early episode

This anime is the reason wolves are my favorite animals of all time. Its also the anime that got me into anime.

Once I got into the second half of the book I could not stop thinking that Cassius would die. Ended up pulling an all-nighter finishing the last quarter of the book in tears. Thought that Hangar 17B would be a stupid place to die in. Literally refused to read on knowing there is no way to take it back. Cried non stop. For 3 hours. Considered writing a revenge horror-fic where a dead character comes back to haunt the author. Went through the 5 stages of grief. Good review. Recommend the audiobooks.

I don't know if I just want Mind Fuck stories, but I love surrealism as well. Paprika has tons of that of course. I also like Gleipnir or Dorohedoro for the insane world building.

I understand what you mean but it will path by when your needs will be like "I wanna some stupid school romance". Ergo Proxy alike shows are not in demand because it is not the time for such shows. The most beautiful and enjoying animes in ten years Made in Abyss, Girls last travel (idk if you call it like this in your language) and Sonnyboy.

Never cried so hard in my life watching Toboe go. Literally brings me to tears just thinking about it now. I watched this show back in the summer of 2004. Think about it at least once a month. Maybe more. Yutaka Nakamura also was an illustrator for this show. ❤

There was a time in the early 2010s, when I was branching out, that I saw Ergo Proxy and Texnolyze, (I had already seen NGE because of how well known it is). Later on I watched Lain, Perfect Blue and Angel's Egg. I never fell into the trap you mentioned, despite watching all those titles. My best guess would be that I was rather lukewarm on Ergo Proxy, despite Dai Sato having written scripts for a lot of shows that I like (Bebop, Stand Alone Complex and Wolf's Rain), even when i re-watched it years later, so I wasn't craving anything else like it. If you want a recommendation for something that's quite out there, try out some Studio 4°C titles from the 90s and 00s.

"Land of the Lustrous" An anime about androgynous gem people coming to terms with identity and existence. And being hunted by moon people who appear out of psychedelic kaleidoscopes in the sky. "Mind Game" Masaaki Yuasa's breakout movie that is a huge mashup of animation styles, creativity, experimentation, and a little bit of pinocchio in there too. Speaking of Yuasa, "Kaiba" is an insane science-fiction show that mashes an art style similar to Osamu Tezuka with adult themes and absolutely wild bio-mechanical tech. Actually just watch anything by yuasa, you'll enjoy the mindfucks all around. Even MORE: "Flowers of evil"- Mindfuck slice of life, enjoy the insanity. "Shinsekai Yori" A post-apocalypse where you can't tell who's lying or telling the truth. "Haibane Renmei" do you want your mindfucks heartwarming and covered with angel wings? "sonny boy" It's like Lost, but it's a high school class that can hop through dimensions. "Stein's Gate" Do you like time travel? Time travel like you do? "Neo Ranga" often forgotten story about half-naked shrine maidens in body paint trying to fight off evil spirits bent on taking over the world? Doesn't sound weird enough? It is. "Revolutionary Girl Utena" Classic feminist lesbian space epic that is way stranger and thought provoking than you would think at first glance "Trapeze, welcome to Irabu's Office" Psychological sessions in a hyper-colored hallucinogenic office, where 11 patients are talking to a bear... but is it? "The Animatrix" A collection of short anime films done in the matrix universe. Some of them get REAL weird. There are so many, hopefully you've already explored most of these, but hey, why not give you an outlet for your addiction?
