Restore Old Pop Up Camper Roof

- Опубліковано 3 лип 2018
- Last year we bought a 1997 Starcraft Pop Up Camper and have been fixing it up one DIY project at a time. This weekend, it was time to renew and reseal the roof! A gallon of Henry's elastomeric paint from Home Depot seemed to be the right stuff. This is how I did it.
Cleaning tip for stains: After parked under a tree with berries, I ended up with some stains. The surface is like stucco. With the camper sealed shut, wet the roof, then spray a light amount of Clorox cleanup bleach on the stain. Then lightly scrub with a soft brush. Then spray off. Repeat if needed for tough stains. Then wait. The stain gets lighter as you wait. Once it dries it’ll look great. But please be careful with bleach! It can ruin things if it gets inside. It can ruin the clothes you’re wearing! It’s not good to inhale the fumes. Proceed with caution.

Wow, I love the way you took your time and did it right. So many times these videos cut corners for lazy people. Great job.
Thank you 🙏❤️
Great job! I just picked up a 98 Coleman fleetwood that needs some tlc on the roof. Going to go this route. About the only thing I will do different is use plumbers puddly or gasket material around the lights. Just my opinion that caulking will make it harder to get off if they need to be changed in the future. But hey! It works your way too. Thanks for uploading.
Great job Mike you have extended it life for another few years . Excellent work!
Thank you!! We ended up trading it on a new popup after someone climbed on top of it during its winter storage and broke the seal between the side wall and the roof panel. It got all wet inside. Molded. I didn’t feel like rebuilding it so we traded it in. I still miss her!
Great work. Currently working on the water damaged interior roof. Probably going to have to reinsulate and use drop tiles. Was originally hardwood. Going to be using this method and trial to make it look beautiful again. Thanks for the video!
Mason Mest prayers for your success!! Hope you’ll share pics of your progress on popupportal! Would really like to see! 👍
Just finished doing this to my pop up and it came out great. Thanks
Abelino Garza that’s great news!!! It makes a huge difference in the overall looks of the popup. Enjoy!
looks great. i just bought my first pop up and am planning on doing the same but first i have to replace the wood inside the roof. plus when i take out the lights i want to replace them with led lights, mine is a 94 Viking spirit 175 and funny, i live in the Berkshires so hope you enjoyed your visit
Erik Baez sounds like a great restoration project 👍 good idea with the leds. We always enjoy visiting family in the berkshires! Beautiful area!! Enjoy your popup 🤗
I just got a 94 Jayco and was looking to do the same thing to the roof of mine. Good video.
kurt cowan thank you!
Thanks for the Video. Best one on the topic.
11:20 That's what she said!
Jokes aside, we just bought a 92 Coleman Pioneer that needs a TON of TLC and found your video while looking up repair videos. Ours has the aluminum roof though. Thanks making this vid and it was well done!
Chappy thanks for your kind words. It’s a labor of love but the process only makes the popup more personal like family ❤️👍 Enjoy it!
Got a 1990 jayco I was thinking of doing the same. Glad I was on the right track and I found your video
That's great! Thanks Dawn 😁👊
I used a scrub brush and Dawn dish detergent to clean my whole camper on the outside. Got a heat gun to remove all the stickers also. I've got 1 little ding I can see will the paint cover it by itself or do I have to do something else first
@@ddcatwoman25 Sounds like you're prepared! I use paintable caulk to fill punctures. I use my fingers to level it out. Let it cure before you paint over it. Sometimes the caulk shrinks and it needs another coat. But once its dry, paint right over it. Hope that answers the ding issue!
Thanks! I'll do that first then. Thanks for all the info!
Nice job and very helpful. thanks for taking the time and showing the details down to the taping and caulking!
I appreciate your feedback. Thank you!
Thank you for the info...nice job on the top
Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much for this video, I am doing this to mine. I thought I had to replace the roof.
Sean Clancy so glad it was helpful 👍
Great job. Happy to see Eric Stoltz is a camper
LOL! So funny man! True story, a waitress in Gulf Breeze FL refused to believe that I was not Eric Stoltz. I even showed her my ID. Didn't matter. She assumed it was fake.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Very good and helpful video!
Thank you. Very glad it helped out! 👍
The commentary in this video is great! So funny!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback :)
We were just given a 1989 Jayco pop up and we’re trying to fix it up. Thank you for this info!
Oh how fun! Enjoy your adventures 🙏❤️
@@sstressfl Thank you! God Bless!
@@andreatyler7066 God bless you too!
You did a great job 😃👍
thank you!!!
What you are thinking is dirt on the roof (approximately 1:30 into video) is actually the metal roof. The paint they put on these older roofs is very thin and tends to disappear over the years. I've worked on campers for a great many years and have seen this on all brands. Great idea with the rubberized covering. That should give you many, many years of use.
That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the feedback!
I need to do that to my camper. Thx.
Awesome video, planning to this to my pop up this month.
Thank you! My best to you on your project 👍
What do you think of Henry’s Tropi-Cool 100% Silicone White Roof Coating it’s a little more Pricey about $59 per gallon
Lone ryder I haven’t used it but considered the cost to benefit ratio. I decided it was too expensive and for my purposes the cheaper stuff solved the problem. Heat reflection was not a priority. It seems to have great reviews though! Henry’s is quality stuff!
Great job on the roof! Great job on the vid. Mine's next.
great job
Richard Morrow thank you 🙏
Great advice buddy ;-)
Great video , I'm in the process of rebuilding the roof and was going to use flex seal on the outside but I think I like the paint idea better. By the way I am from the Berkshires, hope you enjoy it.
One time we camped under a tree and it dropped red berry like seedlings on the roof and left a couple stains. A little spray-bottle-cleanup-bleach, mild scrub brush, spray off with hose and it looked great again. BTW, we ended up trading to a new pop up but that roof looked awesome while we had it. I think you’ll like it.
With my pre-clean to a pop camper was with all purpose cleaner and then we cleaned it with Windex all use with a brush to scrub with
Vincent Rice it’s a labor of love 👍
Nice
Looks a lot like the camper I am working on.
Acetone is great for removing vinyl decals and it safe on fiber glass
Great job was thinking bed liner for mine. How is this holding up? 1995 Starcraft going to get this same treatment
It's still bright, clean and pretty. Solid roof. Mostly surprised by how much better it looks. I had some tree stuff sit on it and some stains appeared. I read stucco guys used bleach and a light scrub brush to remove stains so I tried it. The stains came out 90%, but then after a couple of rains I can't see the stains at all. Bleach worked great. Just make sure your camper is sealed shut. You dont want bleach inside! I say go for it :)
To clean the roof really well use a pressure cleaner.. mine had that same grime that was in between the little ridges like yours did. Pressure cleaner took it right out. Painting mine as we speak lol
MeanGreenTJ05 it was so old, I was afraid of pushing water into the wood underneath! So I prepped and painted and it worked well :)
Michael Yep I can understand that lol Luckily mine wasn't toooo far gone yet..
This was a very helpful video. TY. How is it holding up today? What type or nap roller did you use to put it on with?
After we got it out to a campground, I parked it under a tree that dropped red berries on the roof and it made stains. When I got home I cleaned it with a little spray bleach (like cleaning stucco) and a light scrub brush. Then sprayed it off with a hose. It looked great. We used it for an entire summer. So liked how NEW it looked. During winter storage the kids climbed on top of it (the snow was so deep that they were able to walk right on to it) and the corner of the roof separated from the side wall... just enough to allow water inside and it smelled so strong of mold. The roof at that pointed needed a complete tear down and rebuild. I was so frustrated that I traded it in and bought a new one. But, the last time I saw old Phyllis at the dealership (4 months after trade in) the roof still looked like new :) Hope that helps!
looks good but I would not caulk the lights because you may need to replace bulbs in the future
RochesterAstro I did not caulk the lens. To replace the bulb the lens pops off. The caulk is only on the part that mounts to the camper 👍
Mine is a 1980
When you do the caulking around the lights we have a small gap at the lowest point so if water does get in it has a way to get out
Ps I know this is a bit late
1980! Wow!! You got any pics posted anywhere? Would really like to see it.
I have the same trailer. Have you done a video to redo the roof on the inside. Mine is starting to fall apart.
We traded it a year later. We did a lot of work on this thing inside and out but no interior videos. Hope you can get it sorted out!
I did the same, found that the finish was a little more rough than I was hoping. Kind of dirt attracting. Would still do it again though
Yes it was! I used Clorox cleaning bleach and a light scrub brush, rinse with hose to keep it looking new.
Is this stuff a good way to seal small & larger cracks that are forming in the roof of my pop up fiberglass too camper??
I have some larger cracks that are causing leaks, and some smaller ones that I want to seal before they become larger & cause leaks!!
Thanks for any help!!
Danielle Jenkins Hi! The paint won’t seal actual cracks. You’ll need caulk for small cracks or possibly a fiberglass repair kit to fill large cracks. Then when the patch repair dries you would paint over top of it.
How is your roof holding up almost a year later? We have a 2008 Starcraft and are about to paint our roof as well. Last summer when we were camping a gust of wind flipped our awning and made a small ding about the same size of yours ding in I saw in video. We slapped some duck tape on it immediately and had no problems with leaking the rest of the summer. We were considering filling our ding with caulking or epoxy and then painting the whole roof. Do you recommend the Henry Elastomeric paint and vinyl adhesive? If so we will follow you instruction to a T. Thanks for the video!
Rebekka Star Auerbach yes I do recommended it. The roof looks great and have had no problems. I have had to used a little spray bleach to clean tree-dropping stains off of it, but it continues to look like new.
I have a similar Starcraft 01 Galaxy model. How has the paint held up over the winter?
It looked great! The stuff is as hard a s a rock. And it cleans up great with a little bleach, soft scrub brush and rinse with a hose.
How clean did it stay after you painted it? I have read that some people make the third coat a outdoor semi gloss so that it will be easier to clean? Just want thoughts. Thanks if you can answer! love your new pop up.
Hey man... this is what it looked like after an entire season of new england camping and a full winter in storage ua-cam.com/video/t9bXDNb-Xtg/v-deo.html. It still looked like new! I read that the coating is like stucco. So when it got dirty, I cleaned it like stucco. After every camping trip I always washed the camper before I parked it. If there were any stains on the roof, I used a little spray bleach, a soft bristle scrub brush, and sprayed it off with the hose. Its meant to be a top coat. And I read that a glossy top coat will not last as long as the elastomeric paint underneath.
How happy are you with it almost 3 years now?
After 1 year it still looked like new. There were a couple camping trips where we parked under a tree with berries and it stained the roof. When I got home, I washed the camper like I normally do (with it closed) and then sprayed some clorox cleanup bleach on the stains. Used a light bristle brush on the area and then sprayed it off. Looked great. But that winter, while in storage, the camper was surrounded with snow and one of the kids climbed on top of it and the roof separated from the side panel. Just a small 1" gap. But it was enough for water to get in and ruin things. In the spring I was not willing to rebuild the entire roof so we traded it in on a new camper. I told the dealer what had happened and they took it anyway. BUT... I saw our old camper 4 months later on the dealers lot and it still looked like new. Hope that helps :)
what type of caulk do you recommend for the seams that I can get at home depot or Menards?
Jose Perez the caulk world is very specific. Some will work but might not last as long in camper roof situations. There are some really good discussions on popupportal.com about seam sealing!
i am thinking of doing this on my pop up. So its been about a year since you applied? How is it holding, anything different you would of tried etc?
A week or so later, it got some stains on it from sitting under certain trees. I hit it with Clorox spray cleanup bleach, gentle scrub brush, then rinsed. 90% came out. Then overtime 99% has come out after a rain or two. It still looks like new. Just make sure your camper is sealed when you clean it. You dont want bleach hitting the interior. But yes, no regrets!! Has allowed me to stop worrying about the roof and focus on enjoying camping. Plus it looks so good!!
awesome, thanks for the reply
@@sstressfl Still holding up?
@@chrism7067 It was still like new after 1 year but then someone climbed on top of our popup while it was in winter-storage and broke the roof seam and it got very wet inside. So we bought a new one.
@@sstressfl damn sorry to hear that :/
Sorry to bug you. I was looking for the paint locally. Found a Henry acrylic elastomeric and a silicone based RV and trailer waterproof paint. Was wondering which you used and recommend. My thoughts acrylic is hard like a shell and therefore prone to cracking when raising or lowering roof.
PAGrunt Hi there! Good question! If you search google “silicone vs elastomeric” you’ll find silicone is not as good. It does not last as long. It will leak because it absorbs water. It’s flammable. It’s smells bad. Elastomeric is flexible. Lasts longer. Looks better longer. It will not absorb water. And is less expensive. You won’t regret it :)
Michael Byrne thanks for the reply. I’m a pipe fitter/welder so this isn’t exactly my forte. My roof is aluminum, and it looked like yours is too. Scouring the net and I see lots of stuff for ABS roofs, not a lot on aluminum. I sealed all the corners and joints today after a heavy cleaning. Work tomorrow so it looks like another washing and then paint next weekend. Thanks again and good luck with your channel.
PAGrunt yes mine is aluminum too👍 enjoy! And thank you so much.
Hey Michael, how about an update? How’s the Elastomeric paint holding up? Revolting any time soon or are you totally happy?
We traded it a year later!! I saw it 4 months later on the dealers lot and it still looked like new 💪👌
what is the name of that vinyl adhesive you used for the small hole on the roof? I am making a list I just got a pop up for free and need to fix the roof first
It was pretty standard latex caulk, phenoseal... whatever you use, it needs to be something that is paintable. After a year it was still solid, no change in the shape but then again it was completely sealed by the elastomeric paint. Worked great!
@@sstressfl Thank you so much for responding. I just got the same size pop up you have but its a coleman. I can't wait to get working on it. I sew to so Ill probably work on the inside valance that is all the way around it. I wont doll it up its a camper lol. Just needs to look like a pop up again with tlc. Thank you again.
Mareya Cannenta enjoy the process! It’s fun to make it your own, to be creative, especially on a limited budget! We restored one very affordably and it truly was part of the family when we were done 🤗 My best to you 🙏
Our 1995 Jayco has a seam down the middle of the roof. Any special advice for that?
I looked at some Google pics. I'm thinking disassemble, clean it, dry the area. Caulk, replace, use a new weather strip. I think this is the replacement insert. www.campingworld.com/heavy-duty-insert-trim-white-1-x-100-roll?CAWELAID=120030630000000449&gclid=CjwKCAjw3qDeBRBkEiwAsqeO7t7a-pagwPFKAZhy88C_QZpcJtJOp8m5_FLbfVW9g7W5uSdQr6KkuRoCdqkQAvD_BwE
I have a 98 Jayco with the center seam and a rooftop AC unit. The AC produces a lot of condensation, which pools on the roof. This caused us to develop a leak along that seam... so I started researching solutions. We ended up applying Eternabond tape along the entire seam. That was 4 years ago, and we've had zero issues. The stuff is like magic. We've had puddles sit on that roof for a week at a time with no leakage. So my advice would be to tape the entire seam with Eternabond and then paint over that. It will be a permanent solution, and you'll never need to caulk that seam again.
What type of caulking did you use to seal your lights with?
Specifically, Phenoseal, white vinyl adhesive caulk. Interior/exterior. Mildew resistant. Paintable.
I myself would use butyl, that is what the product is that he took off and called putty. There’s a reason all camper mfg use it!
You painted the opposite way you orginal said in the beginning haha I though it was length then width?
R R I actually did paint it the way I described, but there are times when you need to violate the rule to get complete coverage. But I agree, my video editing does not show the best illustration of proper crisscross painting 😊
How has this held up? Is it easy to clean when it gets dirty?
I traded it on a new popup. However a year later it still looked like new. But the roof got stained once when parked under a berry tree and I used spray bleach, a soft bristle brush, and sprayed off with a hose. It was easy to maintain and looked fantastic. A few months later I saw it still sitting on the dealers lot and it still looked great.
How has it held up a year later?
The finish looks as good as new still.
Hi! I know you have traded this pop up but I was just curious what sort of temperatures that coating is good for? Our winters are sometimes -38 Celsius... then summers are often +36 Celsius.... thank you!
I live in Vermont. It can be -20 here in the winter at times and in the 90s in summer. After a year in this place it still looked like new. Perhaps you can find a data sheet for Henry’s Elastomeric paint 👍
@@sstressfl thanks! I’ll to that.
I am needing to replace the screws in the roof of my Skamper pop up but i have no idea what length they are, anyone know?? I am wanting 304 stainless steel but my trailer is stored an hour away so going there to measure a screw is redundant as I would imagine the length and size is likely universal?
The screw head is definitely unique on pop up campers. Usually the head is very small. Whenevver I bought generic screws the head was always too big/wide. This is typical for a pop up amzn.to/3abdpTT The stainless offerings all look too large. But I am not sure. The best you can do is take one out and go shopping. I hope you find what you need!
Do you have any videos/photos of your camper renovation (process or end result)?
Sadly no video, but I snapped some pics! We removed the interior, painted all of the cabinets and wood surfaces. Put in new flooring. My wife made new covers (twice, the second time a diff color) for all of the seating areas, new curtains. Cleaned everything spotless. Cleaned and painted the frame with black brush on rust oleum paint. Painted the roof. I have a few pics I can share on the community tab if you'd like.
@@sstressfl That would be cool! There is also a thread on popupportal for renovations if you want to post there too.
For the floor did you take out all the cabinets and replace everything or just cut around the cabinets and replaced that?
Tyler Wilson took out the cabinets so we could spray paint them. It always looks so much smoother than paint brush. So then the floor was easy! 😎 I’ll post some pics today on popup portal.

after 2 years how does it look, did it start to peal?
Michelle Shaw I traded it last year on a new camper! It looked as good as new when i traded it. Clean as can be and not a hint of peeling. I went back to the dealer months later and stopped to visit her... she looked great. The stuff is sposed to be 10+ years.

I just painted my sides on my 1996 Dutchmen that is exactly like yours except for the name. I used Rust-oleum spray paint but will roll paint on top. How is the paint holding up?
It looked like new for a year after we used it camping but in the Spring I traded the old Popup in on a new popup. The roof surface was still great. I got berry stains on it once and it cleaned up like stucco. A mist of spray bleach followed by a light scrub brush and sprayed off with the garden hose and it looked good as new again. The coating works very well.
@@sstressfl Where did you get the paint?
@@sstressfl Nevermind found some.
@@mdkzztop Home Depot $25!
Michael, how's the roof holding up? Would you still recommend this Henry's material?
We ended up trading it after 1 year for a new popup, but during that time it was awesome. When it would get a tree stain/berry stain on it I would spray a little Clorox cleanup bleach on it then use a light nylon brush. Spray it off with a hose. Looked wonderful. If I bought another older camper, I would do it again.
How has it been holding up over the past 2 years?
Rob Gordon it still looked like new after I traded it in last year 👍 the stuff is as hard as a rock. Cleans up easy with a little spray bleach and a light scrub brush/spray with water. With proper surface prep it will last at least 10 years.
Will this stuff dry out, crack and fail over time? After all, it is rubber.
Jay Shreve It will need repainting eventually. But from what I’ve read, I’ll be well into retirement, Lord willing, before it begins to fail. Elastomeric paint is incredibly strong and will last well beyond 10 years if it’s applied correctly. Plus it behaves more like paint not caulk. Sand it and repaint as required. 👍
I have apache camper fix roof many times do you think this will work on mine it abs material
mrslashman123 the abs roof is vulnerable to sun and heat damage. I would clean and sand the roof thoroughly, repair all cracks, then use elastomeric paint to seal it. It will help to protect it better than paint! I might test a small area and let it dry first. I imagine it would work very well.
Thnx I will try it
The scotch pad won't reach into the deeper textured surfaces at all... use a stiff poly brush (for washing car tires) instead! Painting at night is a mistake. The floodlights draw in flying insects...
Derek Suddreth thanks man. I tested multiple cleaning devices. The scotch pad was perfect. The texture is not deep! The scotch pad also had the effect of prepping the surface like a mild sandpaper. Again, it is the right application for this specific roof type. I live in Vermont. The insects are present with and without the floodlights. They landed in the paint after the lights were turned off, whilst I slept. The only reason painting at night was a problem, which I addressed, was the increased moisture in the air that delayed drying. But when you have so little precious time, you do what you gotta do. Thanks for your thoughts my friend.
Hows it holding up
Its like a rock when it dries. Stains clean up with a little bleach and soft scrub brush, sprayed off with a hose. It looked like new still when I traded it in :)
Hi - what is your roof made of? Aluminium? Thanks
Yes it was aluminum!
@@sstressfl thanks! It looks really nice 👍
Does that paint work like the flex seal
It dries more like stucco... its rubberized paint but not as rubber as flex seal.
@@sstressfl would you consider priming the top before using this product. Im leaning towards the rustoleum elastomeric 710 versus the Henry elastomeric 587.
@@traviswagner9822 As long as the primer is compatible I'm sure it wouldnt hurt!

It is! A sheet of aluminum on the top. Its built like a sandwich with wood in the middle.
Michael Byrne ok very good. I bought it from someone who probably used the same paint as you. It’s peeling badly, I assume they didn’t prep the surface the proper way. Is yours still holding up?
@@jefffolk4421 After a year mine still looked like new. Not sure what they used on the camper you just bought but proper surface prep is critical and using a the right quality coating makes all the difference in how long it will last.

How is it 4 years later?
One of the kids crawled onto the roof during winter and the roof separated from the side of the roof. The crack let all kinds of water inside. We traded it in for $500 toward our new camper. It was still perfect after 1 year before that happened. I would clean minor stains with a little spray bleach and a brush then rinse it off. Would do it again if I had an old popup roof to restore.
Why not put on new decals to finish it?
I was considering removing the decails and having it custom painted. But, we just traded it in for a 2019 popup :)
Chamois is a goat skin, not pig. Other than that, great video.
Thanks man. Yeah I looked it up after I made the video. I realized it was one of those things I learned as a kid (pre-google) and never researched it. Chamois was originally a goat-like animal, European Antelope. But today its commonly made from the skin of sheep, goats, or deer. Or synthetic!
I think you really enjoy saying the word caulk.. lol
No more than any other word, however there are people in my world that giggle when I say it :/
Lol right? He was throwing the caulk around everywhere in this video. 🤣
Did you by chance rebuild the inside of the roof?
Erik Blazer a year before I made this video I replaced sections of wood on the back and part of one side... the wood had turned to mud from years of slow leaks. From what I could tell the leak was due to failed caulk. The roof wood was still solid.
Oh forgot make an update video of what you did back in 2018 :)
Mareya Cannenta here ya go!! ua-cam.com/video/t9bXDNb-Xtg/v-deo.html 👍 The kids crawled on top of the camper during the winter and crushed a roof corner which caused it to leak 😥

Shammy= sheep skin!
Hey Dan! Admittedly I have never really done any research on the Chamois... little did I know there is an animal called the Chamois. A species of goat-antelope in Europe. For many years imitation Chamois were made with pig skin (what I used for many years) or goat skin. Today many are made with sheep skin. I just bought a new one and it is made with sheep skin and its awesome :)
