- Here are our Top Lessons we learned in our first year of owning a Pop Up camper. We have a 1007 Jayco Pop Up camper. We love it! We have learned what to do and not to do in our short time of camping this year. I hope this video will show you what you might want to take camping next time you go!

Get rid of the microwave and the toaster oven and get a small convection oven which does both.
When you close it up put damprid in it every 2 months it will help with the moisture
I am so glad you mentioned your electrical plug heating up. Anyone and everyone who has and or will camp with electricity, please, get an electrician to set you up with proper amps and advice. Your safety depends on it. It is not safe to hook a boat load of stuff into a power cord in order to keep the breaker from tripping. Breakers are suppose to trip in order to save you from a fire.

Instead of a coffee maker, try a french press. The coffee tastes better and its smaller. U dont need filters. Just need hot water.
Or even better a Aeropress , tastes better then a French press and even smaller and lighter
Or a tea kettle and a pour over filter
Or just cold brew overnight.
Good tip about unplugging the truck before plugging into the campground power! Would never have thought of that. Thanks!
Typically the power wire from your truck that goes to your camper to charge your camper battery goes through a relay that isolates the vehicle from the trailer when your vehicle ignition is off.
That being said, it still should not be a problem even if the ignition is on. The vehicle will charge the battery and the battery charger in the trailer will charge the battery. No different than having a solar panel hooked up while also plugged into AC power.
My family got use one like your's from my my uncle. We went to Disney. At the camp site a family pulled in late one night next us. They were new to their pop up also. They forgot to put the jack stands down that keeps it from flipping back. Well they went to bed and the trailer bucked up dumping them out of the back slide out. We could not stop laughing but we did help them set up their trailer back up right.
My wife found these cakes that you can dump into a coffee mug and cook in the microwave. several flavors to choose from. Our kids, and us, really love them. We keep these stocked in the camper for us.

I've had my camper for a few years a roll of duck tape and a spray can of flex seal will be important tears are going to happen and a tear in the canvas can cut a trip short

U can use a coffee maker without electricity.. you just need a steam pot or boil water, we use the fire. Then just pour it threw the coffee maker.. boom coffee :)
My family used to own one too and for the most part they just made coffee on the stove.

Great video. I second the microwave. I bbq a week before trip and take pulled pork or brisket in vacuum sealed bags, makes dinner soo easy. I camp out at the beach so proper washing and oiling once home ensures you don't have any rust issues.

Portable ice makers are THE solution for so many situations.
Our second camper was a little Jayco 806 pop up. I always loved it except for setting up in the summer in Texas. I always thought when it rained the rain hitting the canvas sounded like French fries frying. We had a ton of great memories in our pop up. So glad you guys enjoy yours.
You two remind us of us. We started off with a pop up that we got for $2000. It was in very good shape for one that was 12 years old. We enjoyed it for about 5 years. We finally decided to look for a small travel trailer for the reasons you mentioned, the main thing was being able to get in and out of it without having to open it all up and less set up time. We found a 20 foot Jayco for $12000 new last year.

Good video for those who camp with electricity. One thing I would add is checking the date on your tires. Mine were 19 years old, but looked new. My DOT code was 4300!

We have been trying to decided what type camper to buy to start out as beginners. Your vids have convinced us to go the pop-up camper route! Would love to see a vid of how you organize the camper and more of what you cook on ur trips. That Mac and cheese looked awesome! 😋
Why don't you apply some solar panels on the roof top and BAM, you have your own power!

re-pack the wheel bearings, those little wheels go around faster than car wheels, not a bad idea to do yearly.

@@debbiedragonfly14 depends on hub/spindle. Some trailers are as easy as popping a cap and hooking up a grease gun to the zirk fitting and pumping til all the old grease is out. If not then remove the hub, pop the seal, empty hub, repack with fresh grease and bearings then place new seal.
Debra Converse there are videos that show it step by step. Literally just did it today. Took two hours and I had never done it before. Probably why this video showed up in my feed! Feel really accomplished!
Do not pump till grease comes out! If you do you just ruined your seal. The bearing buddy has a sliding cap that should push out as you grease it. When it's close to the end of travel stop. Also it's not a replacement for packing the bearings just a supplement.
I had a pop up for 16 yrs and with having 4 kids and two dogs we just upgraded to a 31’ travel trailer, I have to say you have no idea how nice it is not to have to stuff the canvas in as you crank it down, we literally roll up to the campsite, level, and put the stabilizers down. The wife and I have it down to like 8 min. Love your videos, you and Samantha rock!!!!!!
after 3 years of camping I have realized, I do NOT need all these kitchen gadgets. I have my double burner and a coffee pot that can go on the burner or the fire. Thanks for sharing your point of view.
you don't need a baking sheet cus you dont have an oven... 5 minutes later they are using a baking sheet with an oven.

Get yourself a nice Coleman percolator and throw the basket away. Fill the water up to just below the spout. Poor ur coffee into the water and start boiling. Boil for about 7 minutes and remove from heat. Once the boil stops slowly poor a little cold water into the pot and through the spout. That will sink the grounds. Now you will have the best pot of coffee you have ever drank. Check out Kent Rollins UA-cam channel for full video!

We bought a refurbished 1995 Coleman Fleetwood Columbia model which is only an 18 foot camper so it doesn't have any slide outs or extra width.. but it's sleeps 6 comfortably 7 if you have to... And hopefully a lot of them are small. But one thing we learned that you must have is extension cords yes and bungee cords. We also keep plenty of insect repellent in the camper so it's always there as well as our small propane containers for our cooking stoves which we also leave in our camper so they're always there when we need them... Small broom for sweeping up the floors and we actually have a very small mini vac that is awesome. We leave that stored in the camper as well when we're not using it. Ours has a brand new air conditioner on top and heater which are actually oversized and work wonderfully. So we stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We've used it many times and we love it

Great video, we grew up Camping in a Pop Up Skamper pop up camper. Pop Up Camping is Awesome and Fun. When we got home from camping we would unpack and then next day clean the inside and outside really good and then let it air out to make sure really dry then fold it up. You all really have great recommendations for Camping with a Pop Up Camper.

My wife and I had a brand new Starcraft 12ft Starflyer...it had issues. One thing we learned is do not leave any thing with cloth in the camper...any food of any kind and maybe even take out the mattresses and curtains. You cannot imagine the damage mice can do in one winter to a new camper. The mice chewed holes in the fabric of the beds...chewed holes in the mattresses and there was feces and urine everywhere. We moved on and now have a Rockwood Roo hybrid....I go in there weekly to check for ANY SIGNS of Rodents....trust me they are destructive.
Squirrels are just as bad. They like the taste of plastic on boat storage lockers since most plastic is derived from animal fats.
How to fix that is I put mouse traps and rat poison in the camper when camper is closed up and pop it up every 3 weeks to check traps

Great video guys and yeah that's great to have a list of things you need and don't need because I always ran into that problem either not bringing enough my dad and I used to Camp when he was around or on vacations or if we brought too much things and then never used a lot of the things we brought getting sent to get me a pop up camper I had started out originally with a pop-up camper and then work my way up to having a couple different pull behind trailers to even at one point having a motorhome but I've been going in a morgue Greene mode and like the views that you have out of pop up and everything it seems like you're more in the nature but still having a little conveniences of home that way
That one thing I would highly recommend and something I just purchased this year if you ever go off grid are one of those little inverter generators they are super quiet you can be holding a conversation with somebody and I had one person this year when I showed them the generator they were walking over to it they said all you got that running and it's not one of the Hondas this is a Champion 2000w generator it is last year's model so it is a square tube when but it will run at 25% load 9 hours on a full tank of fuel I have ran a ceramic heater with it on the low setting and it will run for six hours on a full tank of fuel that's pretty good for an electric heater it even is strong enough to start and run a 5000 BTU window air conditioner it will also run after the air conditioner is started a floor fan like one of those $35 ones you get at Walmart so I am very pleased with that generator I would highly recommend getting one if you want something that's quiet and fuel-efficient and even have a new model out now that runs on propane as well as gas but happy camping and I'm definitely looking forward to doing more next summer

Love the videos! Sorry Samantha, gotta ask about watching videos or movies and the microwave? I could make it with a few different appliances. I have and air fryer that I have discovered is fenominal for reheating food as well as cooking. It is less wattage than a microwave. Next, gotta have a coffee maker too, just a basic necessity, I concurr. Next, a vacuum sealer. I use mine to reseal chip bags, crackers and anything that can be vac-sealed. A George Foreman grill. Finally, charcoal and some kind of small grill, I can't compromise on that. Personally, camping season has just started for my wife and I up here in NC. I bought a truck bed tent and truck bed air mattress for my Tacoma and we go to some pretty remote places to hunt. Winter is my favorite time to camp. We went twice last year and camped with the temperature in the 30s and loved it. To each his/her own....Love you guys videos! Thanks for sharing!
Great video guys!! We had great times in our pop ups, had 2 of them throughout the years, now we have a hard side trailer. Even carry the yak on top of the truck, was at Big Lagoon this year for the 30 mile out campout! Great fun, u have a great channel!!

i agree about the electric griddle. i upgraded and got a 17 inch blackstone gas griddle. i've stopped using my propane/charcoal grill because the gas griddle is just so much easier and everything can cook on it. keep up the great work.

there is a breakfast called nostalgia electric retor sertes it has a coffee maker and you can toast bread AND make eggs bancakes. its a grill and toaster make with coffee make all in one for $70. bucks
I've been camping for over 60 years. You have given some very good advice.
We've been kicking around the microwave for a while... It really is a good idea we probably wouldn't use a toaster oven... But it's a good thought resume for people that like their french fries, fish sticks, chicken tenders, and pizza roll snacks. I know kids love that stuff and the toaster oven makes them crispy.

I absolutely need more than 1 pot & 1 pan! I do not like cooking on a gas stove, so I bought a 2 burner electric cooktop. It was $20 & a huge improvement. Now I do not have to grill. I like using plastic totes to store all my supplies. I like using paper plates & utensils, but keep steak knives in my camper too. Campgrounds do not want people in pop ups using their sinks to wash(even brush teeth) so it is better not to have to wash dishes. I bought a small Dirt Devil stick vacuum that converts to a handheld, and use that is my camper. It was about $25 and WAY better than sweeping and then using a dust pan and brush! I have a small microwave stored in my camper. And I have brought my Crock Pot, which makes cooking a breeze. And I always use the Crock Pit liners so there is hardly any clean up! I have a battery operated Coleman lantern that throws more light than the camper’s ceiling light. It uses a lot of batteries but is worth it. When the fridge broke it was going to cost a lot of money to replace it, so I bought a portable fridge and use the original fridge as a cupboard. It is a pain to carry in and out of house, but it is too high to keep in camper. These are the things I find essential.

Don't need a coffee maker. A French press works great. Just add water and coffee in the evening and in the morning you have smooth, delicious, non-bitter, cold-brewed coffee. If you want it hot put it in the microwave for a minute. If you want it cold serve it over ice.
Regarding Food: Trust me DO NOT leave chips, nuts or anything mice can get to or you'll have droppings all over your camper & you'll need to chase mice out(which hide very well). I would only keep can goods, alcohol or items stored in heavy duty containers. Also make sure to clean out your appliances really well. Mice love crumbs! We've had an RV for 15 years and we've been through it all. ;)
I didnt realize that stocking a small RV would be like moving into a new house. A year later and I'm still finding things to buy ! My little led headlamp may be my most useful item. Anchor Hocking microwave plates are awesome. They're economical, light weight, and durable. Walmart has some Good Housekeeping storage containers I like too. They're square instead of round like most to take up less space.

I have a Jayco 1207, very similar to This one. As For The Tires, They are supposed to Last up to Ten Years... They Don't!! I replaced Both Tires and The Spare, complete W/ Wheels Ready to Install for Less than $200 from Amazon! One time Changing A Tire alongside the freeway in a Heavy Rain... 2 bills becomes pretty small price to pay, and they do Add to The outward Appearance a Bunch!! As For The Screw in The Lifting Crank, if you don't have something to keep your Crank Handle from Bottoming out in the receiver you are in for a bunch of Frustration! I determined how far my handle needed to go into the Reciever, then wrapped the Handle Tube w/ Duct tape, to prevent it from sliding deeper into the Tube... made a huge difference, and wont harm the Mechanism in the way they show!

Hey thanks for the info. I’m in the market and still debating on travel trailer vs pop-up. My daughter mentioned pop-up to me and I’ve totally love the light weight because I do not want to get a different vehicle. And the price is right...however I do want one with a small bathroom. Nice to see that you guys are from my area.
I had a toaster oven and an electric skillet, with the microwave and never needed any thing else to cook. I had a space heater, fan and TV/disc combo for rainy days. Large cooler that plugged in.
We barely used our stove in the camper. We cook alot on the fire pit. And we bring a small folding table and a coleman stove. We also bring one of those shade tents. But when it's crummy outside we do use it. You can pop popcorn on the fire!
Loved your video. Up you guys sure do love your electronics. Skip the microwave, toaster oven and a few more item. But add a Bluetooth stereo system

Bring some special awning repair tape it works and it hold and will repair small holes or small leaks or rips in canvas. Duck tape won't hold but this stuff will.

If you hook up to a water line you might want a pressure regulator and some of these places I use a serge protector for the electric. Just a thought
mikeswave2 Good point, a must I think, on the surge protector for shore camping. Thought of it as soon as I seen all those appliances and the melted plug.
Cool videos. Have you packed wheel bearings yet? Had those go bad once since those little wheels spin so much faster than the trucks large wheels. Good luck out there. Happy Camping.

You don’t need a microwave or most of the electric items. Foil and fire are your best friends and a cast iron pan. Camping is about living simple
You don't NEED any electric items, or even a camper.... It's all a balance bro.. some people just like to go out and relax and aren't looking to rough it. We have camped for years with our pop-up and have leaned more heavily toward using microwave/gas grill/electric skillet for food. Just faster and easier.

Couldn't agree more. I have been full time for six months now, cooking everything from scratch in my handy-dandy cast iron skillet on my inside lp stove. A full 20# tank literally lasted for 5 1/2 months cooking nearly every meal at home for one.
Get two small dishpans from Dollar tree and heat water in a pit to wash dishes.
Add a multi meter to your tools. Check the outlet before plugging your camper in. Make sure it aint getting a surge.
You need to come up this way there is several camp grounds around fort Gaines ,ga on lake Walter f George .we can go jug fishing

Question, Would you recommend to bring hard liquor like bourbon or vodka to save space on the amount of beer you would normally need to tote for a entire weekend? TIP, My cousin even bakes scratch biscuits in a toaster oven, at hunt camp they turn out great.

We lost two tires and three wheel bearings in our old pop up. Loved it. We wore it out then gave it away.
Yes the bearings need to be repacked every couple years
My burners work fine but I still cook over a open campfire I love cooking over a open fire 🔥😁 love the vid guys
i have a 1993 jayco same as demo and i have it parked top up at the back of my garden under a big ole pine tree. havent slept in it this year its actually been too hot at night but i camped out lots last summer. my friend Bill Williamson gave it to me 3 years ago but he passed away last summer. HAPPYJAYCOING. CMAC
I love my toaster oven! Casseroles, pizza, toast, pizza (I prefer to reheat food in it rather than the microwave)
I would add a small hand coffee grinder to the supply's that way you can have fresh ground locally roasted beans instead of year old pre ground stale Folgers
