    For me this isn't a tourer. Small tank and no on bike luggage. That said I want one! If only I could afford it. 😂

    Divisive looks but I think the M competition package version looks great. The problem for most gen 2 XR owners is that other than the M badge and another £10K, in the real world the standard bike is more useful and practical, and for 99% of riders, just as fast. I’m sure they’ll sell as many as they can make and I’d love one, but I’d get the rear rack parts back on to fit hard luggage (assuming it’s possible). And to add insult to injury, with the regular bike BMW has dropped the (obviously fastest) red paint finish and replaced it with an insipid dark blue metallic…

      Your definition of touring may differ from someone else's. BMW offers 8l side bags and a 40l tail bag solution which is plenty for a week, not to mention there is a plethora of third party solution (e.g. Kriega)

      In addition to rigid trunks, there are also solutions such as soft seat bags, so - yes, You can tour on it!

    I CAN think of another bike that would be just as fast across Europe . The Kawasaki H2 SX SE. Similar power , just as comfy if not more so and can take luggage so you can use it for more than posing outside Costa !

    Ive owned a 2017 s1000xr for nearly 7 years , i did have panniers for a short while but over 120mph it ruins the bikes handling, i have now removed all the the racks from the back and i use sw motech soft luggage when needed, the bike looks much better for it , also i have wanted more power from my mapped upgraded 165 rear wheel bhp BMW for a while so this new m1000 xr is on my shopping list. Who cares what they class it as sports tourer , crossover , lets face it you can tour on any bike , end of . If you want racks then fit racks ,simples. BMW have built the bike what i have wanted for ages. A 200bhp XR. Happy days and lots and lots of big wheelies

      I just took a M 1000 XR for a ride. If you already have the 2017 XR, you will most likely be disappointed with this one. You wouldn't feel the difference in power, maybe just in the Top rev section, but who rides like that. The new XR is quieter, much less aggresive. In the Road or Dynamic modes it doesn't even pop. When I learned about limited luggage options, I thought this bike doesn't make sense.

    Great review Chad! Was there any hint of being able to fit the luggage racks that BMW took off the bike? I definitely want to buy this bike but I do need the luggage capacity. Aside from aftermarket stuff I was really looking forward to this bike being a wee bit more practical. Is the pre-load manual only on both ends like the DDC that the older gen S1000XR and S1000R? Keep up the good work Chad & the team!

    Nice one Chad. Would’ve liked to see having the ability to at least option panniers as let’s face it only an alien (current or ex WSB or MotoGP racer) will only be able to get close to being capable of using 100% of this madness.

    Dynamicaly, how does it fare withe the M1000R? Does the added travel and height make it any less stable or any more agile? I really don't know why Ducati and BMW try and launch a proper sport tourer, without the added suspension travel (something like the SDGT, Ninja 1000, GSXS GT and R1200RS)

    I had the first gen and loved it, on trips with the boys I never used the panniers. The top box was always more than enough and as this variant is more sporty again it needs the top box mount as an option and if you need panniers you should be looking at one of the s models.

    After riding my 1200 Multistrada for the last 10 years and 80k miles I test rode a regular XR. It didn’t turn me on and I went with a Tracer GT because of its fun engine. I ride mostly twisty roads which makes the 120 hp perfect since I can ride it more at the limit. 200 hp on any bike is bonkers, especially on a touring bike. Or maybe it’s just an upright sport bike 🤪
    Anyway, I applaud the manufacturers for building those premium bikes, they help them make $$ and keeping building fun bikes for everyone

    Personally I LOVE the looks. I own a BMW Sports Tourer (RS). It has points for topbox & panniers. I have topbox & panniers. I’m off to Malaga in a few weeks on my RS to ride these roads. 125 bhp power & 125 Nm torque is enough for me, but if I had the cash, yeah. It looks and sounds AWESOME - but unfortunately it ain’t a Sports Tourer………..

  • @quibble8
    @quibble8 2 місяці тому

    Agree with what many have said - the lack of hard luggage is a huge miss. On my SuperDuke GT (most of the time) i run with no luggage or a topbox (ugly but super useful). However... When we're two-up and going away, topbox + locking panniers all on the bike in seconds. This is the TOURING part of sports-touring. I get removing the hardwear saves weight but.... You've lost so much practicality.
    If BMW are worried about the speed / stability with luggage (vs the performance that the bike is capable of), surely it shouldn't have been hard for them to have a little detector-thingy that electronically limits the bike to a sane speed with the panniers on but fll nut-job-mode when you take them off

    Thinking the Multistrada Pikes Peak (maybe NOT the RS--keep reading please--torque over ultra-high gearing) every day over this for torque, travel, a wife and PANNIERS. These are Sport TOURERS--right? I rode to our local bikers coffee group today on my mere 180 HP Pikes Peak V4, with Race exhaust/Ducati mapping. I listened to a BMW M1000R leave and was sad for the motor sound of it... Never get along with the buzzy, revvy, inline 4's. Thinking mid-range torque is the "power" us old guys want and use on roads for sport touring (I'm age 65--but still saw 132 MPH on way to coffee this morning...). Torque seems the "old guy" power I want for road overtakes, etc without rowing a gearbox and winding out motor at 80-90 mph tingling. Can't ride a dyno chart---I may be wrong.... See the 44-teeth review thingy for their view--it's kinda: "Should tick all the boxes, but--Meh".

    • @langhamp8912
      @langhamp8912 3 місяці тому +1

      I think there's a strong tendency recently among riders to simply rev their bikes much higher than before the Euro 5 standard was introduced. Both my recent bikes are Euro 5 compliant and they're shockingly quiet and smooth. So torque is simply not that big of a deal when you have a high-reving 3 or 4 cylinder bike that you can't even tell is running until you look at the tach.
      But have you ridden a BMW S1000 lately (R or RR) lately? You should; they are smooth and quiet. Just incredibly smooth. And the c-bow system installs easily and cheaply on all the S1000's.
