I own a 2021 XR and still love it, going on year 3 in August. Seat isn’t particularly comfortable but that’s about the only negative I can come up with. I usually ride at a moderate pace and easily get 210-220 miles on a full tank of fuel. Truly ticks all the boxes for me.
I had one, I found all the power was in the top of the rev range which meant that you were hitting 80mph before the power band kicked in. This made it a not so perfect bike for the road. Sold it and bought something with less BHP and more torque.
Great video Tim. I have a 1300 GS, great bike and all that, does everything it says on the tin. Great to hear the truth about the “improved” seat. The gen 2 isn’t great either but after trying just about everything on the market the standard M seat plus a Cool Covers seat cover is surprisingly good enough for 3 hours for me, which is more than enough without a break. The annoying indicators can be slightly improved with Weiser Technik Wizards that plug straight in and turn off the rear light function when indicating. Having followed a GS with the same lights for a while they’re actually not as bad as they look. I could see the indicator quite clearly. Standard screen is terrible, MRA Vario with the extension gets rid of the buffeting. It’s personal preference but the XR always makes me feel special, it’s very tame and easy to ride in traffic in rain mode, but after 8k revs it’s ballistic. It’s a great bike but you need to like working the revs. Low end torque just isn’t there.
Added an XR to the garage this year alongside my 1250 GSA. Pretty much agree with everything you’ve said. If I’m crossing continents or anything off-road, I’d take the GS. But for everything else (including track use), the XR is the champ!

@@christianpeersmans I honestly don't recall perfectly how the quickshifter was on the Tracer. It must have been ok, cause I remember the one from the GS being not as good as the 2 other bikes. 4500 km on the S1000XR, and I can confirm that the shifter is really very good. I use it 99% of the time (started after the 1000km inspection), and I must have missed a gear twice in those 3500km. I think it was twice going from 1st to 2nd, and ending up in neutral as I did not pull "firmly enough" the pedal.
Hey, I had the 2022 XR in grey with matching luggage. Personally I thought it was flat typical of an inline 4 so switched to another GSA which is actually faster off the mark and lots more grunt. Does look nice though, msport 👌

@@Bigleefish I have just come from an RR to an XR. Very happy (except the seat). I looked at KTM but there are too many stories online about warranty issues and - more importantly - a lack of satisfactory dealer response to warranty issues for me to want to go the KTM route.
That's 90% of country roads where I am - you just need to be able to stop in half the space you can see to be clear. Learned that the hard way 12 years ago coming around a corner to a combine harvester parked in the road... I stopped in time but only just.
Thanks Matt, I do really appreciate your support. Can't bloody wait to get to the alps in a few weeks - this tour will be a bit more bikey than war-ry. And probably more pizza-ey.
I have a gen2 Msport. If you’re a solo rider / tourer you need to at least try this beast. It’s so easy to ride easy and then there’s warp drive 😂 I’m 6’3 have an MRA screen on it and can ride at 70mph visor up and I have a little anti slip piece of rubber which I just set on the seat and put in my pocket when I get off. My riding has so improved since I got it and you don’t have to ride like an idiot to enjoy it.
Agree with comments about the seat, I was looking to buy one if they improved the seat but unfortunately, they didn't. Is it a tiny bit wider, yes, but painful to sit on for more than 10 minutes. Great bike, too bad
I have a 10 SP like yours which I use for weekend blasts, some track time, and long distance touring. Is a very good bike and I am happy with it. I have it now for 7 happy years. But for some reason I feel the urge to get some new sorry l sport touring bike ( S or M-XR, 25 SDK GT, MTS PP) mainly to add two up touring capability. And I am so confused and nothing I test ride seems to be up to fun of the 10-SP. Your thoughts? Please
With the same engine, same 17” wheels, and same equipment (heated dynamic cruise shift damping control pro fandango) coming as standard on a S1000R, why not just plump for one of them and bang a back box on it? The lack of a screen is probably a positive given your comments about the taller screens on the XR’s (which I also agree with), and you’d save yourself thousands of deutsche marks
I have three bikes, and RT 1250 R, an S 1000 R and Ducati Diavel V4, and this was going to be for sure my next purchase but the raising of the seat and the inability to lower it with the end package has cost BMW my purchase, and I would suspect, quite a few other peoples.
For a bike that might have miles put on it, I wish the reviewers would do more details on running and servicing costs, 0lus warranty etc. A bit more factual based, not just opinions.
In the US the warranty is unlimited miles for 36 months. You can purchase an additional 4years warranty for about $1000 usd. 7 years of unlimited mileage warranty for $1000 - Yes please!!
I have a 1250gs but was thinking of the 1300 -but this seems like it might be in the running -I do like low down torque -how does the S1000xr compare ?
Very good review but in reality the bikes suitability depends on the road conditions, Ie, a GS1300 would out perform the XR moderately easily when road conditions are a bit rougher or for touring. The XR though is realistically suited to mainly good road conditions thus would dominate most bikes there.
I rode this bike today, the blue one. Amazing machine but the seat is a deal breaker it does push you into the tank. It's also very buzzy. If you touch the hand guards it's like touching a tuning fork. Great bike but hard to live with was a daily i think.
Yes, great bike but think it would be better on track or in Spain where they have better roads. I rode a Yamaha MT10 today and think it's s better road bike with more accessible power. I'm trying to ride as many bikes as i can to see what i like.@@habibi750
Regarding the slippery seat it might be down to the riding jeans you wear. I had the same problem with my 2022 XR and swapped the standard seat for the supposedly non-slip M Sport seat. Still have the same problem but only when wearing jeans and not with other gear (textiles etc). Anyway, great review with the usual dry humour. Also in my opinion the vibes are a non existent problem and short screens are always the way to go 👍
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah I was thinking I should've been riding with my textile trousers on because they have a grippy leather arse patch. But I don't slide around on many other bikes in my jeans...
Really pleased with your review mate, I've been waiting for this bike to come out for a long time. Would be very interested to hear your thoughts comparing it to the 1300 GS if you get the chance to ride it. Ride safe
The Tuono motor is far more engaging, more powerful, faster and the Tuono handles better. Oh and it sounds the best. The XR is more comfy and roomy. I went for the Tuono and have never regretted it.
I am 5’10” with 32” inseam and find the bike a perfect height, just on balls of my feet if I need 2 feet sown(rarely). Buy the bike, you will love it! I have riden previous generations with factory lowering kit, just not the same. Good luck!!
Yeah, perhaps it's that the S1000XR's midrange is smoother whereas the MT10 has some peak in it (emissions…) which send the front wheel skywards every now and then
@@timrodierides I agree. THE MT had huge rush above 7500 rpm but below that I was disappointed over time. I think this XR is stronger everywhere above 4000 rpm. The MT maybe has a little more torque at the bottom of the rpm range. All in all the new XR engine is just sublime! I wasn't considering an XR from my experience with he Gen1 and older Gen 2 XR, but I freelance for our local BMW dealer and ride all BMW models all the time. He gave me a new XR for a day and I bought it there and then. Simply amazing.
Not a conventional comparison, bear with me- BMW XR1000 or Suzuki Hayabusa? Both sport touring beasts with a different approach my thoughts: Looks- Busa Engine- Busa Reliability- Suzuki Electronics- fair fight but most go to the XR Position Comfort- XR Seat comfort- Busa Price- Busa What do you think?
Great bike. Still, my 1290 SAS trounces it in every aspect that matters to me. Biased owner opinion. I don't get why would someone compare it to 1250 GS. Too different.
I resubsidized ..I’m sorta wondering how or where you can use these bikes now ..I can’t see the enjoyment in these machines on public roads .. 2 gears and your done basically
The thing that swayed me away from the XR? Is how many used one are for sale compared to certain other models you can hardly find one locally...is that a valid way to evaluate? admittedly not unless one knew how many are sold...but I dont see a crap load so I am just guessing they dont sell utra well given the price but what do i know
My son owns a Gen 1 XR, and I have a MT. I like the MT for its hoonability and mid range grunt, but the XR is way better for longer rides. And the GS is better again. Horses for courses!
I'd echo what Malcolm's said! I've not toured on my MT yet (will be doing so in a few weeks), but it's not going to be the most comfy bike. But I think the engine and grunt will make me love it once I'm in the alps.
Having said that, I should clarify mine isn’t a SP, so the very firm ride is tiring on a long backroads run so Tim yours will be better there. And I have a slightly higher screen etc, but that does not a touring bike make. But on a good smooth fast twist road, there’s nothing better as it’s way smaller and more nimble than the XR. I imagine you’ll love it in the alps!
I enjoyed the video well done. I'd be very disappointed to spend that much money and get that seat and those vibes. No such problems on my '98 VFR so I can't understand how BMW can get the little details like that so wrong
When i sold my 2016 XR, which i absolutely loved, and bought a GSA1250 was only due to the new XRs terrible seat! We like touring, so GSA it was. I still miss the XR. I cannot understand how that seat was approved by the factory test riders, considering its a complaint from almost all XR rider's! Not sure if i will keep the GS, and do not like the styling of the GS1300. So, want XR performance and handling with a comfortable seat. Mmmm.... Really enjoy your humour!
@Pccart1121 The first XR model seat was perfect. When I wanted to buy the new model, it had the terrible seat. I did not want to pay out an extra R6000 to get a custom seat which might not have made it that much more comfortable due to the seat area design. Love tge 24 XR it might tempt me if I can do a long seat test ride as we enjoy touring.
I am a BMW fan boy and had many of them but no more!! They really know how to take your eyes out when it comes to pricing!!!If they could charge you for wheels they would!
The wheels are included in the price! Unless you want carbon ……. I’d say go for carbon 😂🙌🏼👌🏽 . I’ve had and ridden loads of different bikes, I even tried the crazy Zh2 Kawasaki but I’ll be honest, I got back on my XR and it’s just better, it may not be as fun but (and I’m no expert) imo a bike has to be easy to ride and easy to live with day to day, the Zh2 is fun sure but it’s the little things like you have to press the cc button 500 times before it activates and by that time you’re already home ! I agree with you though they’re brilliant bikes 👍🏾
How is the zh2 power in a sport prospective and handeling twisty roads compare to the s1000xr? I am an owner of a 2023 h2 sx (more havier than the zh2 but same HP) and I am thinking of buying the s1000xr but I like more sportier rides from 0-130 mph and I am not sure the s1000xr can deliver what my h2 sx gives me. I know all the advantages of the xr for every day driving, but I am looking for the sportier ride. I will appreciate your answer 🙏

@@timrodierides I'll get a look at these too thanks! Keep up the great reviews
@@Bigleefish I have just come from an RR to an XR. Very happy (except the seat). I looked at KTM but there are too many stories online about warranty issues and - more importantly - a lack of satisfactory dealer response to warranty issues for me to want to go the KTM route.
They did some changes, but now it is even more expensive. :) Great bike overall. Cheers bro.
Must be absolutly terrifying riding on thoose narrow almost no through corners visabillity! 😮😮😮
That's 90% of country roads where I am - you just need to be able to stop in half the space you can see to be clear. Learned that the hard way 12 years ago coming around a corner to a combine harvester parked in the road... I stopped in time but only just.
I’m really looking forward to your touring vids Tim. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thanks Matt, I do really appreciate your support. Can't bloody wait to get to the alps in a few weeks - this tour will be a bit more bikey than war-ry. And probably more pizza-ey.
@@timrodierides superb. It’s all good. I’m off to the picos in June, and I can’t wait for that.
Has this update fixed the vibrating problem.
Looking forward to the history tours. Last years in the Vosges was great.
So which is the higher performing bike? The xr or the s1000rr?
Agree with comments about the seat, I was looking to buy one if they improved the seat but unfortunately, they didn't. Is it a tiny bit wider, yes, but painful to sit on for more than 10 minutes. Great bike, too bad
As I understand, the navigation system on all BMWs with the TFT screen is to put it nicely, a challenge to use. Your thoughts?
I find it one of the easiest to use!
Please
What happened to the TE pack. Everything extra in one good value bundle.
i like to have one of these bikes !!
if i have it , im getting lot of money after selling it !!!
Cheers from Greece man !
Fantastic review ♥♥♥ "Mein Hintern tut weh" or "Mein Popo schmerzt" 😂😂😂😂
What a fantastic looking bike 👌great review
Im interested to know if you prefer your MT-10 AP or this S 1000 XR??
With the same engine, same 17” wheels, and same equipment (heated dynamic cruise shift damping control pro fandango) coming as standard on a S1000R, why not just plump for one of them and bang a back box on it? The lack of a screen is probably a positive given your comments about the taller screens on the XR’s (which I also agree with), and you’d save yourself thousands of deutsche marks
My only concern is the seat - will I be uncomfortable after 90 mins
At least you can stand up to stretch unlike cruisers and sport bikes.
I have three bikes, and RT 1250 R, an S 1000 R and Ducati Diavel V4, and this was going to be for sure my next purchase but the raising of the seat and the inability to lower it with the end package has cost BMW my purchase, and I would suspect, quite a few other peoples.
Test rode one for a day, XR even now still has horrible hand numbing vibrations …why BMW can’t fix this is crazy.
That's what I was afraid of. My Multistrada has none

Would this bike replace my 2014 S1000R and 2014 R1200GS? I'm looking for a general purpose bike that's semi-comfy.
What would you rate a better road bike comfort and living with, this or pikes peak multi?
I've not ridden the PP Multi sadly
I have a 1250gs but was thinking of the 1300 -but this seems like it might be in the running -I do like low down torque -how does the S1000xr compare ?
Very good review but in reality the bikes suitability depends on the road conditions, Ie, a GS1300 would out perform the XR moderately easily when road conditions are a bit rougher or for touring. The XR though is realistically suited to mainly good road conditions thus would dominate most bikes there.
I have 18 plate xr, dont see need to part with it, not to keen new futuristic info loaded tft screen either
Still stick to my gs1250 it’s more versatile
I rode this bike today, the blue one. Amazing machine but the seat is a deal breaker it does push you into the tank. It's also very buzzy. If you touch the hand guards it's like touching a tuning fork. Great bike but hard to live with was a daily i think.
Also with the wunderlich comfort seat?
Normal seat@@gianni3774
Was it a 2024 model?
Yes, great bike but think it would be better on track or in Spain where they have better roads. I rode a Yamaha MT10 today and think it's s better road bike with more accessible power. I'm trying to ride as many bikes as i can to see what i like.@@habibi750

Cannot believe you have over 19.3 thousand subscribers.
Bloody hell, the bike looks tiny next to you 😂
Really pleased with your review mate, I've been waiting for this bike to come out for a long time. Would be very interested to hear your thoughts comparing it to the 1300 GS if you get the chance to ride it. Ride safe
Thanks! I'm trying to get a 1300GS in to test but I keep sleeping with the PR's girlfriend so keep getting put to the back of the queue ;)
@@timrodierides lol 😂
I get an annoying buzz in the footpegs at freeway speed.
I'm trying to decide between the basemodel tuono or this. the Tuono is far cheaper and was heading that way but after this video I'm not sure...
The Tuono motor is far more engaging, more powerful, faster and the Tuono handles better. Oh and it sounds the best. The XR is more comfy and roomy. I went for the Tuono and have never regretted it.
I tested the BMW M1000XR yesterday awesome bike.. But i am 5-9 i would like to lower it 2 inches or more do you know lowering options on this model ?
I am 5’10” with 32” inseam and find the bike a perfect height, just on balls of my feet if I need 2 feet sown(rarely).
Buy the bike, you will love it! I have riden previous generations with factory lowering kit, just not the same.
Good luck!!
Interesting! I had a 2023 MT10 and now this 24 S1000XR. It’s feel this bike has more mid range than the MT which disappointed me in that department
You got a Thumbs up just for the Intro😂
@@MrCod16 thanks! Being sensible is overrated
Not a conventional comparison, bear with me-
BMW XR1000 or Suzuki Hayabusa?
Both sport touring beasts with a different approach
my thoughts:
Looks- Busa
Engine- Busa
Reliability- Suzuki
Electronics- fair fight but most go to the XR
Position Comfort- XR
Seat comfort- Busa
Price- Busa
What do you think?
I agree with you - I think the handling would go to the BMW. I'd find it hard to choose though...
XR over busa in all categories except:
Engine
The Suzuki engine is Buttery smooth.
Great bike. Still, my 1290 SAS trounces it in every aspect that matters to me. Biased owner opinion. I don't get why would someone compare it to 1250 GS. Too different.
Thought u might off mentioned the big ktm, maybe another run on the ktm 2c if u miss it 🤔 lol
In your review of the previous bike you said GS was better? What's changed
Well spotted and thanks for calling me on it! I think it’s more a stage of my life thing - I’m enjoying inline 4 motors more than I used to!
I resubsidized ..I’m sorta wondering how or where you can use these bikes now ..I can’t see the enjoyment in these machines on public roads .. 2 gears and your done basically
You have to know some quiet roads and have a fairly sizeable risk appetite...
Would you recommend the GSXS1000GX?
Hey! I've not ridden it yet, I'm a bit behind on my Suzukis at the moment...
The thing that swayed me away from the XR? Is how many used one are for sale compared to certain other models you can hardly find one locally...is that a valid way to evaluate? admittedly not unless one knew how many are sold...but I dont see a crap load so I am just guessing they dont sell utra well given the price but what do i know
Maybe the reason you don't see many used XRs for sale is that their owners love them and don't want to part with them!
@@ski3435totally agree
Great review as always.
How about showing off your linguistic skills on the Yamaha XSR 900 GP.
I've been promised a go on one :) In a month or so
@@timrodierides excellent. Looking forward to it
This or MT10 SP as an all rounder including some solo touring?? Thanks Tim!
This bike or mt10?
Wanted to know the same
high seat fixes sliding into tank
How do you mean? Do they balance out/raise the front section ?
@@egbk2069 high seat raises front section
Could you not just buy an aftermarket seat?
@Pccart1121 The first XR model seat was perfect. When I wanted to buy the new model, it had the terrible seat. I did not want to pay out an extra R6000 to get a custom seat which might not have made it that much more comfortable due to the seat area design. Love tge 24 XR it might tempt me if I can do a long seat test ride as we enjoy touring.
I am a BMW fan boy and had many of them but no more!! They really know how to take your eyes out when it comes to pricing!!!If they could charge you for wheels they would!
Sadly that's how they stay in business...
I've never liked the S1000xxr "bucket".seat. can't believe BMW get the seat wrong...😔
The 24 does not have the bucket seat, any more. It’s gone.
See that's what I was expecting Ben, but it felt just as buckety to me :( Your buttocks may vary! I've just bought my first mountain bike in 20 years and am rediscovering what proper seat pain is :D
@@timrodierides agreed my arse appears to be made of granite! But I’d did compare a 23 bike, the bucket edges have definitely reclined!
I enjoyed your video, thank you. I’d love to see it compared to Ducati Diavel V4.
Thanks! I've reviewed the Diavel last year, they're chalk and cheese in most ways. I had more fun on the Diavel V4 though...
@@timrodierides Oh, interesting. I have one, rode a lot of your, 4 weeks last year and the same this year. I found it to be better at touring than I thought it would be and wondered if they might be similar.

Love these bikes, but not sure I'd take it over the multi. Neither one appeals as much as the KTM GT, and with the 1390 GT spy shots looking like it is finally more attractive than the squished bugs after a long jaunt, I'm hopeful I'll have won the lottery by the time it's released so I can buy one. Great review as always.
Thank you! I always wanted to love the SDGT but it was always a bit too small for me for a touring bike. Which is odd, because I felt more comfortable on the naked SDR!
@@timrodieridesI am very surprised the SDR feels more roomy to you! Mind you, Lamb Chop is also a tall chap, and likes the SDR. 🤔
I test rode the GT last year and was happy with the comfort even though it's no GS, but I couldn't stomach the looks.
Makes my Gen1 S1000R seem cheap and a bang for buk. Has all that and wasn't like buying a KTM and having yo add all the stuff on lol.
I sat on a couple of XR's & the seats were terrible. They push you forward into the tank & crushes your nuts. Terrible!
That's wot I said innit! It's odd no one at BMW notices during development

Just get the TE.
£18k ish, M sport just gets you an iffy paint job and less comfy seat.

Not even remotely. Haven't done half the things I want to do on my MT yet (touring and trackdays!). I've had it 8 months but I'm still firmly in the honeymoon period. It's got under my skin like no bikes I've owned in a long time!
