  • In this video, we show you what you need to catch shrimp as well as where to go/look for to find them.
    Need to have items:
Cast net. For day time shrimping in water greater than 10ft we recommend taping the net. We also recommend at least a 6ft net. Use a bigger net though if you can. 0:24
5 Gallon bucket. (The daily limit in Florida is currently a 5 gallon bucket so you can use this bucket to determine how much shrimp you have.) 0:53
    Appropriate fishing license. 1:04
    Nice to have items:
Mesh basket to empty your shrimp into. The mesh allows water to drain out but your shrimp to stay. It's also bigger than the bucket so it's easier to empty your net into. 1:16
Depth recorder. If fishing from a boat the depth recorder will allow you to see the shrimp on the bottom.
Spare net. It's nice to start with a smaller, lighter net to find them and then switch to the bigger net once the shrimp are located. Also, should your net get hung on something at the bottom, you don't have to end your day of shrimping. 1:42
Zip ties. If your net gets torn, zip ties are a quick and effective way to repair your cast net while out on the water. 2:54

What does the bottom finder look like when you’re on them?

5000 seemed extraordinarily high. I had no clue though so I looked up how many pounds of shrimp a 5 gallon bucket holds (35-40) then how many medium sized shrimp there are in a pound (about 40-60 without heads). Anyways ballpark is it'll take about 1500 standard eater size shrimp to fill your bucket. Highly approximate but at least its much more obtainable than 5000 lol
Are you allowed to use a small trawl net in Florida? In texas you can for a small fee and I've always been tempted but honestly have no clue where to begin pulling the thing and wonder how long one can pull one before losing it to a snag. Or worse pulling the stern under. So I've held off.

Good info Jeremy. I have yet to go try that. Do you make your own nets with the taped bottom or buy them. I was thinking on doing one myself with duct tape?
One of these days I'll get there.
    Tight lines.....

Yeah we take them ourselves. Just make sure it is a good quality duct or gorilla tape.

Do you have to go way up the river to south of the Buckman, or can they be found further north?

They catch them from the mouth of the river past Palatka

You can catch them at other places. There are a lot from the Mayport inlet to the Dames point bridge too.

Using a cast net, DO NOT wear nice clothes. They will be trashed
