Their last big hit before Brian left the band and half a century later,I still believe Sweet is the most under rated rock band in music history and my favorite rock group so far.The long version of Love Is Like Oxygen can still make me cry.Awesome and timeless,Andy.
The musicianship and vocals of SWEET are criminally underrated. Have music critics and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame really listened, really paid attention to how brilliant this band was
Love is Like Oxygen was a classic the moment it came out. Absolutely epic and it was often played within in the messes of the British Army. I have loving memories dancing to it with my deceased husband. I feel his fear, love and passion whenever I listen to this song as if he was still alive. Even though that about 10 and more years are between the song and us dancing to it.
bucky468 Sorry i misread your conment. Thought you were looking for a digital version. The 'hard' copies are still the best. $5 was a steal (im in the UK so trying to convert dollars to sterling in my head lol)
I was 17 and working two fulltime jobs when the song came out, I loved it but didn't realise till decades later that it was a Sweet song. When I was 12 I knew about Sweet from my girlfriends brothers and their mates, they were crazy for Sweet they played the Ballroom Blitz for me what a phenomenal song. Now that I'm back into Sweet I see four very talented guys.
It makes me so sad that all of the others are gone now. I was a kid when these songs were popular, and I still love them just as much as I did when I was 13 - 17!!
Its a CRYIN SHAME!!!!!! That the Rock and Roll Hall o Fame has wrote SWEET OFF!!!!!! Andy,Mick,Brian and Steve made some of the GREATEST music in their career!!! BEND YOUR KNEES AND BOW YOUR HEADS!!!!! ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK BANDS!!!!!!! SWEET!!!!!!!!!
We from Yugoslavia did love Sweet. I was only 15 when i did buy my the first Sweet single - The Sixteens in 1975. Now i am 59. Great memories i have on Sweet music. In my town the two Sweet LP records were selling at that time, issued by "Jugoton" record co : "Sweet Funny Adams" and "Desolation Bouleward". I loved that 2 LP very much when i was teenager. Oh.. what sweet music it was. Later on, in 1979 i did buy "Love Is Like Oxygen" .. My god.. that was a great piece of music by Sweet. Still listen to it on Utube. Great song.
When I was a beginning musician and this song came out I thought: "Wow, that's an amazing piece of music!" Today I'm an experienced musician and I think "Wow, that's an amazing piece of music!" :)
I remember hearing it on the radio the first time and saying "Wow, who is that?" It stood out, different from anything else on the radio. To me, it had that far away sound to it like from in a distance. Mellow, hard. Hard mellow. I still turn it up when I hear it. Great song.
Me too heard it one year ago. First time in years. Now have a sweet addiction. And brought a lot of albums. Just got level headed after two month wait. Best thing about today. Very nice album. Lots of variety sweet one of main reasons I am following this path.
As huge as punk was taking off at that time it's quite a testament to Sweet for being able to pull a song like this off. Great song. Great band. May Steve, Mick, and Brian rest in peace.
Brilliant band sweet, could all sing in harmony, always admired Mick’s drumming as a drummer myself and always thought him and the lads were grossly underrated. RIP Mick and Brian, greatly missed
WOW!!! One of the greatest songs of ROCK!!! That song rocked my teen years!!! I’ll never forget it!!! Happy 40th birthday!!! LILO is in my heart and soul forever!!! 🥰🎉🎄
This was the first SONG I've listened from SWEET and then I started to love and admire this great band. Thank You for giving this wondeful song to our lives.
Many punk rock musicians (including yours truly) were, and still are HUGE Sweet fans. And we're not ashamed of it. this is not some hippie band. In 1973, rocknroll didn't get much tougher than the STOOGES and Sweet. Now we're in our late 50's, and 60's and we STILL love it. Trust me on this.
When I as schoolboy in 1976 has for the first time heard "Give us a wink", the Sweet became my favourite group. In Soviet Russia we had no vinyl of western rock groups, only 3th copy of tape - you understand, what quality. But the Sweet was dear for me in any quality. Now I have all your songs in best sound on Hi-End devices, and now I still feel this first musical love. The Sweet is alive!
@@kodiakandgrizzlybears3787 actually, we were. Abba presented "Happy new year" In Ussr on the same day as to the rest of the world. In 1980s vinyl records of Western music were issued in ussr
I disagree. The great music aside, the reason Sweet still have such popularity amongst so many different people is because of the individual strength of each member. More recently, bands seem to consist of one focal point member with all the other members appearing like faceless anonymous session musicians. Most of the most popular classic groups (Beatles, Stones, Who, Sweet etc) had really individual identity members within an even stronger whole.
Pure genius. THANK YOU, ANDY!!! CANNOT get enough Sweet - please keep it coming!!! The ORIGINAL SWEET - NOTHING COMES CLOSE!!! Missing Brian and Mick every single day ...
One of my favorite songs by Sweet. There are many favorites but I was a teen hearing this song and just loved it and still do. Thanks for the back story
I was so glad to see Andy Scott discuss Love is Like Oxygen. I was, and still am, and enormous Sweet fan, borne out their early RCA stable productions. Many of us will know that the band had firm roots in dedicated hard rock and you only have to listen to tracks like Miss Demenour to really understand their musicianship. If you bypass the successful glam era into songs like Love is Like Oxygen, Fox On The Run, The Six Teens and the massively underrated Action, you really get to unearth the overall quality of the band. I still maintain that Brian Connolly was one of the most underrated front men of all time. He didn't profess to playing any instruments he just stood up on stage, with the range, confidence and commitment to present his craft. A truly gifted vocalist who had enormous and natural talent beyond his good looks. I still wonder what exactly happened to make him leave the Band....
Wow I can't believe it's already been 40 yrs, l remember hearing it on the radio all the time and loved it. The first time I heard sweet was in 74 when I was 11 and fox on the run was just released and have loved them ever since
Agreed, Brian's vocal is perfect for the song. It's so sad his addiction meant he could not grow with the band, and take it into a new era and perhaps a new musical direction. 'Love is Like Oxygen' should have been the start of a new and exciting period for The Sweet, but instead it signalled the beginning of the end. The song was released in 1978 and Brian left the group the following year, after increasing tension over his drinking. Hindsight's a wonderful thing, but I think it was obvious the new three-piece would be The Sweet in name only, without its memorable front man, Brian Connolly. Thank God The Sweet's music and even their charismatic performances still exist today thanks to technology, to be rediscovered and enjoyed by future generations long after all the band members have turned to shining dust. Now that's immortality!
Thanks Andy for this insight into a classic song! I see many stating that Sweet should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That would be a fitting tribute for the band in my eyes and would definitely get my vote!!!
Not a word about Brian's stupendous vocal performance! That's the big, thick, delicious icing on the cake here, Andy, just so you understand... Also, it's heartbreaking how sad Brian looks in just about every photo from this period of time. Love Is like Oxygen tears at my heartstrings =´(
Sadly I have never met Andy, Brian, Mick or Steve but loved The Sweet from early 70's onwards and still play your songs in my car today - Should you read this Andy, Thank you for great music and great memories !
Very interesting to hear how the song developed and came to fruition. 'Love is Like Oxygen' is definitely one of THE high points of Sweet's career IMO. A couple of years ago I had the privilege of having my top 10 favourite songs played on my local radio station. It was a buzz for me to hear 'Love is Like Oxygen' blasting out through the speakers as it kicked off my songs selection !
Fantastic come back single by Sweet. I remember very well that this single came out and I was glad that my favorite band had delivered a top record again. Then followed Level Headed and I was in seventh heaven with that fantastic album and the new path that Sweet had taken. Little did I know then that it would be the end of an era. A very sad experience for me when I learned that Brian had left the band.
I'm 53 years old. I'm not overly keen on rock music, and what i do like of it could be condensed to less than 10 songs, with my beloved 80's pop filling the bulk of my play list. i discovered this in 2023 and think this is amazing. If The Sweet had done more stuff like this I'd be a huge fan. I honestly can't stop playing this.

One of the reasons "Ox" was so successful was that Brian`s voice came back and sounded good like in 1972.
