As many others have stated ...the original full length version is what you need to review as the instrumental in the middle and end portion really show a lot of creativity and variety.
Darn, that was the short version, which is only half the length of the whole song. I think Amy would be quite intrigued by the long instrumental section that was excised from the middle, and the ending is much better than the fade out on this single version.
Yeah, the long version (which is hard to find outside of the album) provides a lot more stylistic virtuosity. That middle portion is one of my favorite song sections ever-and I’m a huge fan of Pink Floyd, Yes, and early Genesis (Amy should try “Supper’s Ready” by Genesis).
Wish you had played the long version, which has a instrumental section that seems to call up memories of ‘Tubular Bells’. The long version also has an outro. Please, if you can, avoid the shortened (butchered) versions of songs, when you can!
I used to think this was ELO. This song was actually a departure from their normal glam sound of the early 70s. "Ballroom Blitz" "Fox On The Run" "Little Willy" "Wig Wam Bam"
I really like watching people who are enjoying themselves whatever they are doing and you Amy , couldn't hide your pleasure if you tried brilliant, haven't heard this for years id forget how good it is
It's a shame it's not the full version on the original album (but the edited single version). There are other parts missing from this track! Great band.
This is great reaction, but I wish you had used the full version (nearly 7 minutes long) of this song. The instrumentation in the middle of the song is fantastic!
Awesome song and group. Very Underrated group. This is the short version. The long version has a really cool section most radio stations cut as it was too long in there minds.
Thank you for this song, this song and whole album is one of my all time favorite and a departure from the band's existing style, more sophisticated, more progressive and artistic. But also it's last with original vocalist :( by the way it is single/radio version, album version is longer and has an instrumental solo part. This album also has some other great songs like Fountain, Dream on, Lettres D'amour, Anthem No1, Air on A Tape Loop and etc.
I'm so glad this song hit for you. It really is a sweet song. Ballroom Blitz and Fox on the Run are two other pretty famous songs by Sweet. They are a hidden gem of power pop. The Jellyfish are another power pop band that have this feel.
This is the single edit(radio) This shorter editing had 2 purposes. 1) DJs could play more hits per hour in order to compete with other stations. 2) To make you buy the album for the full version
Amy, I was beginning to think in past months, when is she going to touch and play that piano? This local music store gave her a deal on that instrument and she never touches it. Good thing to make use of the piano on the channel. Your comments are spot on, to me you are describing a whole different aspect of the music industry. Call it one hit wonder (even if they had up to 10 hits), call it contemporary, call it "singles" artist, as opposed to "album" artists, call them bill board charters, call them whatever, but each decade from the 50's on has had scores of them and just about every western nation had their own representatives and it's all "NOT QUITE ABBA LEVEL" music and finding their market in the 8-12 year old crowd, not the 15 and above age range, like a Led Zeppelin would be. It is music that is not profound enough to have any legend, like Rolling Stones may have, Not serious enough, like maybe Super Tramp. But it can be interesting and enjoyable music, I am a collector, these little hit songs that I, some how, remember, stuck in my head. Impossible to find and buy on a media form, around the year 1998-2000, when file sharing (and stealing music) became, I searched and searched for this music to download and now have Thousands of songs in the "My Music" folder. I will not mention other sample artists in this genre because it is literally Thousands of them. Sweet is a group that actually endured appr. 10 year in the top charts with numerous hits (in Europe.) "Ballroom Blitz" is a song with which they cracked The US and found success here as is this song. But Vlad picked the worst song to paint what Sweet is like. There are much better songs even given that you enjoyed this. This song sounds droopy, sounds like the beginning of the end, or the end of the end which it is, the "slimeball factor" is way too high, it lacks the tenacity, the conviction of Sweet in their better days. Without looking I can't recall all of their songs but a song like "Papa Joe" would paint a much better picture. Thanks for the great video though!
Not really my thing back in the day, until someone played me some of their singles B sides, those boys could play. They did sound like Queen and they could rock..
"Too high" is referring to the euphoria or ecstatic feeling created by being in love (especially NEW love). A form of endorphindom which occurs when the brain releases endorphins. Occurs during orgasm and can also occur during long distance running ("runner's high")
When I saw the title of today's video, I realized I had forgotten who released this song. Just a thought, "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox on the Run" also by Sweet could make for a fun double-dip weekend sometime in the future.
I grew up in the Glam rock era, make-up, glitzy costumes and platform boots. They had a bit of an eclectic catalogue, Ballroom Blitz, Fox On The Run, Co-co, Wigwam Bam, Funny funny and Teenage Rampage, to name a few.
Now that you've heard one side of Sweet, they have quite a few other sides to them as well. They were practically all over the rock spectrum from silly bubble gum pop to hard rock, heavy metal and even a little bit of progressive rock. I'd love to hear you react to their song Set Me Free. It's example of early heavy metal. Very much ahead of its time.
Oh crap - I had forgotten this song. My big brother had this song on a real record player. I used to sneak into his room when he was out and put it on. Then I would listen to his Iron Maiden albums Being a child in the 80's in UK was harsh but the music was awesome. My other brother loved Simon and Garfunkel. My sister was, ABBA and Blondie I loved it all.
Why not the full version ugh!!?You think Vlad would’ve known to pick that one. I didn’t even listen to it when I found out it wasn’t the long version. Hopefully they redo it.
You just have to listen to "Ballroom Blitz" by them and there is also Slade with Noddy Holder as lead singer, who is an amazing singer, my favorite track of them "Far, Far away". Almost forgot T.Rex, these 3 band make for me the essence of Glam rock
Love the Sweet, love this song (longer version is much better) but there are are many many Sweet songs that I like more than this. I was lucky enough to see a late version of the Sweet at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park NJ. I was literally leaning my arms on the stage with a ton of people behind me. I saw the set list on the stage and saw Hellraiser was on the list but towards the end of the set. I screamed "Hellraiser!" and the singer turned to the band about 3rd song in and said "we're doing Hellraiser now" and they did lol So many great bands were inspired by Sweet ❤
A song that has always made people happy. Such a positive vibe representing the seventies, a feeling that no longer exists until you hear this song again. Lovely. Now listen to the long version, which is the 'normal' version for everybody, and much better than this butchered version! Such a beautiful journey you must have, discovering all these musical gems! And there is much, much more. Try Procol Harum's 'A Salty Dog', for example.
I find it amusing - and kinda sweet - how many times you use the word "sweet" to describe a song by Sweet ... and you're not at all wrong! This is one of their later songs, and is possibly the most well-developed in composition and arrangement - but it is a very natural progression from their earlier catalog. They always started with a fairly simple chordal structure - often a 3-chord 1-4-5 pattern - yet they always found ways to build that up and keep interest (bassist Steve Priest's quirky vocal stylings were a great tool for this). I'll recommend their hit "Ballroom Blitz" as a second song to listen to - it is earlier than "... Oxygen", features Priest's vocals, and was an international hit, reaching the Top 10 in 20 countries including a #5 rating in the US. The song, in an interesting little bit of irony, the wong was written about an incident in Scotland where the band was performing, but were driven from the stage by a drunk and rowdy audience - and the song was never released in the UK on a studio album - but the song about a live show was a staple of their live shows!
This song had also been my own first impression of Sweet's music! 😀 Only that this was 47 years ago! 😄 My 18-year-old Son loves their 'Fox On The Run' 😊
this is one of those songs where the lyrics are incongruent with the music. the words are sad, but the music is lively. devo did one like that called 'beautiful world,' where the song sounded happy but the lyrics were really saying sarcastically that the world is not beautiful.
I hear E.L.O. influences as well as a touch of Paul Mcartney and Wings style from their Live and Let Die era. I always liked this song but never associated it with Sweet for some reason. I think of Ballroom Blitz and Fox On The Run and Little Willy when I think of The Sweet. I probably thought this was a E.L.O. song when it played on the radio. I prefer this over their other hits.
In the time Sweet was a kind of a top 40 band for kids. Not in the same leage as the big names (Like: Led Zeppelin, Deep Pruple, The Who, Black Sabbath etc etc).
But not everybody knows that they started out with the bubble gum stuff and then switched to hard rock/heavy metal that truly was as intense as anything that bands like Judas Priest and AC/DC were putting out in their early days. They were the victims of a lot of misfortune, otherwise they would have been a lot bigger. And they should have been.
I knew Sweet before Queen. When I heard Killer Queen on the AM radio in 1975, I thought it was Sweet. Eventually I heard the DJ announcement that it was Queen. While both bands have big harmonies, I learned they were different bands. I'm a long time fan of both bands
Sweet was a lot of fun! If you ever get around to their song Ballroom Blitz, consider watching the official video for the "glam". effect. Thanks for sharing this one, Amy!
Just to add a little perspective on the vocal performance here, in 1974, Brian Connolly was badly beaten after leaving a nightclub in Staines where he received several kicks to his throat resulting in his being unable to sing for some time and permanently losing some of his previously wide vocal range.
One of their more melodic, poppier songs, and one that they actually wrote themselves (their earlier hits were mostly written by the producer duo Chinn/Chapman and tend to be more hard rock - "Blockbuster"/1973 or "Teenage Rampage"/1974 would be representative for this). My favourite track of them would be "Lost Angels"/1977 - with the opposite emotions compared to "Love Is Like Oxygene".
I remember buying "Desolation Boulevard" as a young teen because of this song. Talk about a wide range of music. This band has some serious hard rock which would impact many bands that came after as evidenced by the comment at the beginning about Guns and Roses.
If you don't mind an input into the suggestion box, I'll be glad to hear your analysis of some post-punk bands from the early 80s, perhaps Joy Division (Atmosphere, Leaders of Men, Digital), Siouxsie and the Banshees (Arabian knights, Spellbound, Dazzle), the Chameleons (In shreds, On the beach, Singing Rule Britannia), etc. It allows a discussion of periodization, genre boundaries (vis-à-vis punk and new age), influences (shoegaze), etc.
I´m a new suscriber in your nice channel and I´ve seen you don´t have any listen of The Mars Volta. They are not just a band, they are a genre of rock theirselves. I reccomend you the first track of their first album: Son et Lumiere(intro)+ Inertiatic ESP. They will blow your mind. Just keep it up you have a nice channel!!
I would love to see you react to some Art Of Noise, most of the actual music of which (rather than the sampling) was done by classical composer and pianist Anne Dudley. Close (To The Edit) would be my first choice.
Sweet weren't really taken seriously at the time and seen as overly commercial pop. They did evolve and this song had a lot more substance to it but their reputation had stuck. Having said that they were a lot of fun. As an aside I worked with the guitarist of a later incarnation of the band when he was a sound engineer at aTV company. He is a lovely guy.
I always thought of them as a bit of a novelty act - high camp glam pop. But this does show something slightly more substantial about them, some good production at least. In the same category as Seasons In The Sun? Maybe, but this is less cloying.
sorry, but as the music started i looked at some comments, and as i was afraid of people were clamoring for the long version, so i stopped the video. we need a do over vlad! the good thing is she will appreciate the long version much more after hearing what she missed.

I came here to say this.
I came here to say this too….oy!…OY!
Oy!
Me too
Wish you had played the long version, which has a instrumental section that seems to call up memories of ‘Tubular Bells’. The long version also has an outro. Please, if you can, avoid the shortened (butchered) versions of songs, when you can!
Time for a follow-up with the long version!
(A lesson in the "single edits" that pervaded the 1970s... 😕)
The great Mike Oldfield
This song has a real ELO vibe to it...
I forever thought it was them
I agree! As a young, new ELO fan when Oxygen was released, I thought it was ELO at first.
Yes. Too bad her first ELO exposure was a live performance that didn't impress her so much at the time.
I really don't know when I became aware that My favorite ELO song was actually Sweet, and I'd probably never admit it if I knew.
I thought it was elo as well
Sweet "The Ballroom Blitz" 😊
I used to think this was ELO. This song was actually a departure from their normal glam sound of the early 70s. "Ballroom Blitz"
"Fox On The Run"
"Little Willy"
"Wig Wam Bam"
I used to have the siren beginning of 'Blockbuster' as my morning alarm. 🤣And 'Ballroom Blitz' was my other fave of theirs.
Now that you mention it, there's really a bit of ELO-feeling in it.
It also has a 10 C.C. vibe to it, so British stylistically.
Yes, with a bit of ELO thrown in.
I never realised this was a Sweet song until recently as imo its doesnt really much like Blockbuster, Fox On The Run etc
Yes! I have loved Sweet since I was a kid in the 70’s.
Please, please keep diving into them. They are So good!
We needed the full-length version! C’mon now!
I was hoping it was the long version, but a great song none the less.
A bit silly but it’s pure ear candy. I want to not like it but I can’t help myself. Great video VirginRock
I really like watching people who are enjoying themselves whatever they are doing and you Amy , couldn't hide your pleasure if you tried brilliant, haven't heard this for years id forget how good it is
It's a shame it's not the full version on the original album (but the edited single version). There are other parts missing from this track! Great band.
This is the short AM radio version. Try and find the longer, album version. I think you'll like it! 😊
I was a teenager listening to this band, and they spoke to a generation of kids that needed music like this. The songs had meaning.
Oh my gosh. This was the first cassette tape I ever got when I was a little kid. And I wanted it specifically for this song.

This album also has some other great songs like Fountain, Dream on, Lettres D'amour, Anthem No1, Air on A Tape Loop and etc.
Such a great choice ...this band is so underrated...💯👍..another very underrated English glam band from same era ,,Slade
need long version please !
I'm so glad this song hit for you. It really is a sweet song. Ballroom Blitz and Fox on the Run are two other pretty famous songs by Sweet. They are a hidden gem of power pop. The Jellyfish are another power pop band that have this feel.
That (ridiculously simple) riff is everything! Fun and memorable...then they switch things up. The whole idea of the song is cheesy, yet awesome!
I would never have thought this song warranted study. You prove me wrong.
I love the opening guitar riff tone.
you need to do the full-length version with the grandiose instrumental interlude
Love this song and thank you for your reaction. You need to bookend this with "Ballroom Blitz". Fun and energetic.
And if Ballroom Blitz is done, need to bookend that with The The "Armageddon Days Are Here Again".
That’s weird. I’ve just stuck this on my play list prior to your post (feeling nostalgic) Perfect synergy! Yeh… great ‘Pop’ song.
This is the single edit(radio) This shorter editing had 2 purposes. 1) DJs could play more hits per hour in order to compete with other stations. 2) To make you buy the album for the full version
For many years I thought this song was by ELO.
That GUITAR! Reminds me of THE KINKS!!! Please can we get to THE KINKS!! ( Of course this is Great song by Sweet ) 😊
Just as trivia - this song was one of the Ivor Novello song award nominees of 1978. The winner was Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.
That was also a great song.
I really wish you would’ve selected the long version - you would’ve loved the middle part with the harp!
Amy, I was beginning to think in past months, when is she going to touch and play that piano? This local music store gave her a deal on that instrument and she never touches it.
Good thing to make use of the piano on the channel.

Not necessarily my favourite of theirs, but Sweet Sixteens is probably one of their most accomplished, in my opinion.
Sweet were somewhere between ELO and Queen.
And 10CC.
I absolutely love your reaction to this. It is just a great boppy song, but so well constructed. Awesome!
When I saw the title of today's video, I realized I had forgotten who released this song. Just a thought, "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox on the Run" also by Sweet could make for a fun double-dip weekend sometime in the future.
I grew up with Sweet, Slade, T-Rex, Queen - this Song is one of Sweet's best
❤ your reaction Amy.... my favorite UA-cam channel
The essence of glam rock was tongue in cheek. A style The Sweet were masters of. Great review Amy.
when rock music was fun
I grew up in the Glam rock era, make-up, glitzy costumes and platform boots.
They had a bit of an eclectic catalogue, Ballroom Blitz, Fox On The Run, Co-co, Wigwam Bam, Funny funny and Teenage Rampage, to name a few.
It’s like they took something someone thought of while high and made a song out of it.
It's like listening to Bohemian Rhapsody without the middle operatic section.
This song sounds like Electric Light Orchestra. It is such a contrast to Ballroom Blitz.
Oh crap - I had forgotten this song.
My big brother had this song on a real record player.
I used to sneak into his room when he was out and put it on.
Then I would listen to his Iron Maiden albums
Being a child in the 80's in UK was harsh but the music was awesome.
My other brother loved Simon and Garfunkel.
My sister was, ABBA and Blondie
I loved it all.
Have you listened to Sweets heavier songs, surprising how they were already doing what Iron Maiden and co picked up on years later.
@nockianlifter661 will look it up, thanks..
I got into punk. Very sibling thing 😂
Why not the full version ugh!!?You think Vlad would’ve known to pick that one. I didn’t even listen to it when I found out it wasn’t the long version. Hopefully they redo it.

What a delightful "first listen" and analysis.
You found a gem of my early youth!
Haven’t heard this song in years. Brings back great childhood memories. Fun song!
If you're going to have a first listen to The Sweet, why wouldn't it be "The Ballroom Blitz" or "Fox On The Run"?
Great vídeo. Thanks ❤
I screamed "Hellraiser!" and the singer turned to the band about 3rd song in and said "we're doing Hellraiser now" and they did lol
So many great bands were inspired by Sweet ❤
I was the lead guitar player 20 years ago to the support band for these. The ego was on another level. I nearly went home!
Iconic track....the long version is even better......TY!
This song had also been my own first impression of Sweet's music! 😀 Only that this was 47 years ago! 😄
My 18-year-old Son loves their 'Fox On The Run' 😊
You mentioned Queen. Makes sense as Sweets vocal harmonies are often complex as are Queens.
Sweet was the very first band that I could say I became a fan of, when I was about six years old.
Time to listen to 'I'm not in Love' by 10cc.
this is one of those songs where the lyrics are incongruent with the music. the words are sad, but the music is lively. devo did one like that called 'beautiful world,' where the song sounded happy but the lyrics were really saying sarcastically that the world is not beautiful.
"Ballroom Blitz", "Little Willie", "Fox on the Run", please!
Love the way you give credibility, thank you!!! 😀

It sounds to me like Electric Light Orchestra, without Orchestra
Wow, what version is this? Never heard the song so short. Maybe that's an AM radio version.
I knew Sweet before Queen. When I heard Killer Queen on the AM radio in 1975, I thought it was Sweet. Eventually I heard the DJ announcement that it was Queen. While both bands have big harmonies, I learned they were different bands. I'm a long time fan of both bands

The long version is much more interesting.
My husband is going to love this!!
The full length version has far greater scope for your, pretty spot on, analysis.
More Sweet please.
A very underrated 70s band.

Amy this is what we would call good "ear candy" 🤗🎶🎸
SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dope!!!!!!!!!! Sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I luv her expressions 😅❤😊
This, as they say, is a "bop"!
Listen to the full album version.
I´m a new suscriber in your nice channel and I´ve seen you don´t have any listen of The Mars Volta. They are not just a band, they are a genre of rock theirselves. I would love to see you react to some Art Of Noise, most of the actual music of which (rather than the sampling) was done by classical composer and pianist Anne Dudley. Close (To The Edit) would be my first choice.
Sweet started off doing bubble-gum rock. Try "Little Willy" for one of the most bubble-gum rock songs ever.
Fox On The Run!!!!!
Wow .I've not heard this song since I'm a kid. I always thought it was ELO.😊
Try the live version of 'Teenage Rampage' from Crackerjack (a kid's progamme from the 1970's). That's The Sweet that I like to remember.
Nooooooooo! THIS IS THE SHORT VERSION!!! 😵😵😵😵 You should hear the LONG versión.. it gonna blow your mind! 🤯
great work! When the best band of heavy metal Judas Priest?? I want one analysis from you!
I would love to hear what she has to say about " victim of changes " from the 79 live album ( unleashed in the east .. )
I always thought of them as a bit of a novelty act - high camp glam pop. But this does show something slightly more substantial about them, some good production at least. In the same category as Seasons In The Sun? Maybe, but this is less cloying.
An underrated song.
Got lots more to do with this group! They are awesome
sorry, but as the music started i looked at some comments, and as i was afraid of people were clamoring for the long version, so i stopped the video. we need a do over vlad! the good thing is she will appreciate the long version much more after hearing what she missed.
