The first half of the story up to this scene felt play by play identical to space marine 1, I had just come to terms with it and accepted we weren't here for the story. Then finally we started getting character development and resolution to the first game plot and themes.
Lots of people praising Gadriel's willingness to play ball, but I also liked how this scene contrasts Titus now vs SM1. In SM1 he disregards Leandros' reservations with a "Try to keep up.", making it clear he doesn't care about his opinion and will leave him behind. Here he tells everyone to stay close, reinforcing that they are a team and they should stay together. That gives Gadriel the space to also voice his thoughts and Titus takes the time listen and respond, even referencing that the old Titus was wrong for brushing aside Leandros' suspicions and acknowledging his past mistake. Our boy is a badass killing machine AND a diplomatic leader. A paragon for all Ultramarines.
That's a great point. A common critique, if you can call it that, is the story is fairly straightforward. Titus's character development is well done in the context of the entire Space Marine story. And let's not also forget that this is taking place over hundreds of years. Correct me if I'm wrong but Titus was in the Deathwatch for a century, right? I'd be interested if we got a DLC that let us explore his growth during that time.
I love that "aye sir" from Chairon at the end. In a universe where strength and power are supreme, its so nice to see these gods among men like characters still have emotion.
I'm not sure if Gadriel is was one of the primaris who cawl grabbed during the heresy (like Chairon is) but it 100% makes sense that someone without the 10k years of myth and legends surrounding the codex would be more okay with deviating from it when the situation called for it.
What I like about this scene and the characterization of Titus is this: Leandros reporting directly to the Inquisition instead of a Brother Chaplain for his suspicions may well have been wrong, and this might also well be immutable fact-and nobody can really say otherwise. But, what's important about this scene is not that Leandros was correct in his suspicions, but the fact that Titus has taken the time to introspect on his own actions in those moments during his interactions with Leandros. Who knows if having addressed Leandros' concerns would have made things play out differently at the ending of Space Marine 1, but the fact that Titus acknowledges and takes personal responsibility that he may well have been part of the problem is great to see. Someone may well be wrong about you and send you on a century of seemingly unnecessary penance, but you still have the opportunity introspect and consider if you had a part to play in things going wrong-even if it's just a small one
“Aye Sir.” Man…the way he says that….cold as ice and controlled Rage. This is what a good leader can do…let others around him know that it’s ok to be human, to feel rage, doubts, loss…but be in control of it. Use it to motivate you to be the best you can be. Don’t let it consume you…let it mould you into something more than you thought you could be. Titus learning this and admitting his faults to his brothers shows what a great leader he truly is. Because above all you can teach this who follow you, the most important is being humble and remembering it is your duty to serve these people. Be the one to soften their doubts with words of encouragement. If they struggle, admonish them fairly and with kindness, even while being firm and unyielding. The bonds these three formed during the story may not have been Shakespearean in writing, but the heart of the bond is there and was a great part of this game. These two teaching Titus that he could find and trust in his brothers again was just as important as anything he could teach them. In many ways, he learned much more from them than he ever taught them. Might be a life lesson in there somewhere….shocking to see in any modern media, I know.
Guilliman even called out his chapter for their bullshit, the book was guide lines, they turned it into a fucking holy Scripture. Primaris are the breath of fresh air needed, the 40k ultra Marines are too restrictive.
That's how you do fanservice references right. Man, SM2 was such breath of fresh air, as if you reliving pinnacle of 90's action movies but in glorious Warhammer setting
The fanservice on its own would have been just what we expected, but adding the character growth for Titus really shows the devs cared. It would have been so easy to just play on the fans' hate for Leandros and write him as the simple bad guy, but instead they had Titus admit that he wasnt a great leader in the first game. After all, Leandros was intoctrinated as a loyal servant of the Imperium and of the rules laid out by his primarch, he's not supposed to blindly follow his captain in all things. Being constantly wary of your comrades becoming corrupted by chaos is how every organization in the Imperium operates.

Honestly when he said that I was like: "oh god not again..." but when he said he was looking to it my response was: "..... you're my battle brother for life."
These guys are not your standard secondary characters, they are true bros
Really liked Gadriel's character development. He surprised me.
I loved how this cutscene was one giant reference to the beginning of the first game.
This scene smells brotherhood and trust. When Chairon said that "Aye sir" I felt it.
The Codex Astartes Does Not Support This Action.
But fuck it let's drop like bolts of divine retribution.
0:17 When one of the boys suggests cheeky lunch beers
Titus: It was my fault
Literally everybody: Fu@k Leandros!
"The codex doesn't support this action."
Titus: Shut up Leandros!
"But I'm looking forward to it."
Titus: Mah Man!
Gadriel: what? I am gadriel, who the fuck is Leandros?
@@DradagormTitus: Sorry, my PTSD is acting.
Titus first: 눈_눈

Titus was snow snow?
Snow snow
'눈' means snow and eye in Korean
So it is actually profitable to use it as eye emoticon 🤓
“Codex Astartes does not support this action.”
Titus: *Eyebrow twitches remembering Leandros*
There was an ever so slight hint of a smile on Tituses face when Gadriel said that he is looking forward to it
When he said it I was so giddy. It’s such a great homage and thematic foil to the opening of SM1.
Gabriel: The Codex Astartes does not support this action
Titus: You gotta be shitting me…not again
Gadriel: but I am looking forward to it
Titus: Oh thank the Emperor
Titus was almost like: "Aw shit, here we go again..."
The codex astartes does not support this action.
Guilliman: well, it does now.
Titus: and just like that you’re more valuable than Leandros.
The Codex Astartes does not support this action.....

The Chad Gadriel vs The Virgin Leandros
Chadriel
You can see Titus' very faint smile of relief
As soon as he said that I went “OH COME ON” and then he says “but I am looking forward to it”. Then I just started laughing.

Meanwhile rawbutt girlymans pov: *see!? This guy gets it! THEY'RE GUIDLINES!*
Rowboat Gorillaman: "Titus, you are now a 50 star General. Gadriel, you are now his chief of staff."
Titus had Leandros PTSD for a second. Sidonus would be proud of Titus' new friends

I like the helmets line, a number of commenters for SM1 made mention that it was nuts to go without it
That one line made me change my mind about Gadriel😂
I can see LT. Titus having a momentary PTSD flashback when he heard those cursed words
"When I was a young captain..."
Boi, you got 2 dots on your head back then
I was expecting Gadriel to say, "Naaahhhh...just fucking with you"
He had me in the first half..
What I like about this scene and the characterization of Titus is this:
Leandros reporting directly to the Inquisition instead of a Brother Chaplain for his suspicions may well have been wrong, and this might also well be immutable fact-and nobody can really say otherwise.
"When I was a young captain..."
Ah yes. The young captain of AT LEAST 150 year's old.
168 years old to be precise.
He had served for around 150 by the time of space marine 1.
" shut the f&ck Asian Leandros!!"
*jumps out of transport*
"FOR THE EMPEROR!!"
Early game Gabriel: Here we go by the book!
End game Gabriel: Bye book.
And they say this game is humorless
it gets humoristic at times after Avrax, once the issues of trust amoung the marines are settled.
“Aye Sir.”
Man…the way he says that….cold as ice and controlled Rage.
“Nah it’s cool I saw the Blood Angels do this once.”
Finally someone who sometimes for better tactic reject that Damn book Girlyman wrote and published

Guilliman even called out his chapter for their bullshit, the book was guide lines, they turned it into a fucking holy Scripture.

Nvm we chill
you can detect the faintest hint of a smile on titus his face
Guilliman: FINALLY, SOMEONE WHO GETS IT.
That's how you do fanservice references right. Man, SM2 was such breath of fresh air, as if you reliving pinnacle of 90's action movies but in glorious Warhammer setting
Gadriel straight up giving middle finger to Leandros
The fanservice on its own would have been just what we expected, but adding the character growth for Titus really shows the devs cared. It would have been so easy to just play on the fans' hate for Leandros and write him as the simple bad guy, but instead they had Titus admit that he wasnt a great leader in the first game. After all, Leandros was intoctrinated as a loyal servant of the Imperium and of the rules laid out by his primarch, he's not supposed to blindly follow his captain in all things. Being constantly wary of your comrades becoming corrupted by chaos is how every organization in the Imperium operates.

Yeah... but for a brick, he flew pretty good.
