I grew up with this great music. The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. In the Aja documentary you saw Michael McDonald talking about singing the close harmonies on "Peg". When they tour together in Dukes Of September, McDonald backs up Fagen on the S.Dan songs, and Fagen backs up McDonald on the Doobie Bros. songs.
It is amazing that during this period of time the good bands went through major changes in style. However, I tend to like the late 60's and early 70's versions of these bands, e.g. Chicago, Steely Dan, and the Doobie Brothers. Please take a listen to the earlier songs from the Doobies. Songs such as Black Water, China Grove, and Listen to the Music. Just my opinion as one who grew up during this time.
One of my favorite songs of all time, because I never get tired of it after 40 years!! "He came for somewhere back in her long ago" is probably the best intro line to a song EVER! So glad you got the chills listening to it.
This song was co-written by Kenny Loggins. Highly recommend you guys reacting to Loggins and the pre-Michael McDonald "Doobie Brothers". As good as McDonald is, and was with the Doobie Brothers, I hope you check out the Tom Johnston led Doobie Brothers. Songs like "Listen To The Music", "Long Train Runnin'", "Rockin' Down The Highway". "China Grove", "South City Midnight Lady", "Jesus Is Just Alright", and "Dark-Eyed Cajun Woman are good places to start!
Just saw an interview with Kenny recently and he said he went over to Michael's house one day to write and he was at his door about to knock when he heard Michael playing bits of "What a Fool..." for his sister. Kenny rushed in and said, "That's great! I know exactly what should come next....". And that's how the song was written.
Welcome to the Doobie Brothers - Steely Dan connection! The Lead singer you just heard (Michael McDonald) is a background singer on many Steely Dan Songs ( Peg, Green earrings...). Also one of the Doobies Guitarists (Jeff "Skunk" Baxter) was a founding member of Steely Dan. Enjoy your journey with the Doobie Brothers!
Takin' It To The Streets and Another Park Another Sunday are two fantastic Doobie songs. This was the first concert I attended, got the tickets for my 12th birthday. Jay Ferguson was the opening act and it was just such a fantastic experience.
They have quite a few good songs: Jesus is Just Alright Another Park, Another Sunday Taking it to the Streets Black Water and more... A couple connections to Steely Dan. Michael McDonald sang backup on several Dan songs. And Jeff "Skunk" Baxter left Steely Dan to join the Doobie Brothers.
Nice video! Love the way your little dog passes by in the background and just as it's about to walk out of the room, it briefly looks back at you both bopping away with a resigned expression that says, "oh God they're doing that head bobbing thing again". Then sighs and leaves. Obviously no Doobies fan.
I love that you all played this. I stationed in Germany near Stuttgart and met my wife there. We were married on New Years Eve 1978. Loved this song. So many memories . Thank you!😊❤
There music is so diverse. They were so different before pianist and vocalist Michael McDonald joined the bad, yet just as good and popular. A mainstay on 70's radio and played by all the local bands.

This album, with the addition of Michael McDonald to the group, gave new life to the Doobie Brothers, different sound/vibe post MM. Just a great album, period.
Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers. Two bands from the same roots. I am 56 I grew up with this music. I am 13 years old when I listen to these songs. Memories and a kids life. I started to appreciate mellow rock and the jazz influences at this early age. Nice video.
I keep thinking.. .I can't believe you guys are able to appreciate The Doobie Brothers and Yes and Metheny and Holdsworth all at the same time, but then I think... oh wait, I appreciate them all too! Thank you so much for sharing.
The Doobie Brothers are great band and such a radio staple in the 70's. Being a guitar player Long Train Running was probably most guitar players go to song in that time. However, Pat Simmons (one of the founding members ) is such a great guitar player and known for his style of playing (Travis Picking" ) which can be heard on long train running and black water. Thanks for the posy guys! As always stay safe and much Love!
IKR? Now I realize I need to find it.....I'd forgotten the title track until I saw it listed, and suddenly it started playing in my head. That is the WORST kind of ear-worm! Every single song is addictive. I played it to death. (On vinyl, you can do that.)
Doobie Brothers Playlist: "Long Train Runnin" - "Listen to the Music" - "China Grove" - "What A Fool Believes" - "It Keeps You Running" - "Taking It to The Streets" - "Black Water" - "Rockin Down the Highway" - "Minute By Minute" - "Take Me your Arms"........
You need to check the Doobie Brothers out live. They are one of the few bands that sound just as good if not better live if you can believe that. And just think about it that all those voices, not one of them is without an instrument. They're all playing instruments. Nobody is just standing behind a microphone, so you're listening to a full band as well as the voices.
We didn't realize how spoiled we were with 70's music. Pop jem after rock classic after prog mindblowing. Radio used to be so awesome and wide ranging. And then the 80's signalled the anything goes spirit too! No wonder music is so important to me. Some of the songs you kids play (like this one) I haven't heard for soooo long. In my mind I hear the vinyl noise along with the tune! As others have commented, a strong connection with the Doobies and the Dan, and the earlier Tom Johnston D Bros are also great. (Black Water & Long Train Runnin & more). Yep, Lex, you were on target with your memory of Black Water. I'd love a reaction to it. 😃
we took all the great music of the 70s for granted, but the first awakening came already in the 80s, which many people think were great - not for me, all this Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and others plus the stupid stuff, that was produced in Germany, wasn't mine. I'm glad I already had Rush (just discovered in 1980) and Maiden and I also listened to many american bands as Nightranger, 38 Special, Sammy Hagar, but also "older bands" as Kansas, Heart and at the end of the decade came Dream Theater and I was saved :-) In the 90s I didn't buy many CDs, but I bought Cycles, which I liked a lot and Brotherhood, which was ok, after that I lost track of the Doobies
You can really hear his background vocals on Steely Dan's "I Got the News" off the Aja album, but he is on several songs off Aja and Katy Lied, maybe some others. I saw Steely Dan 4 times and one time Michael McDonald opened for them and then sang background vocals on a couple of songs and the lead on Dirty Work. Needless to say, great concert but all of the Dan concerts were awesome..
Ok, here we go. The Doobie Brothers are in my top 5 bands of all time. They are so versatile, and at that time period, unique. The vocals, the musicianship, the production…..spectacular!!! Dive in and I’ll go with you. Love it.❤️ Anything from Minute by Minute, especially the title track.😍
Doobie Brothers had several hits before Michael McDonald joined but they changed directions with him. You're right on "Black Water". "Minute By Minute" is a favorite (with Michael). Have a great day!
Earth, Wind & Fire ! Oh boy, I can't wait for you to experience this incredible band. I know you will be absolutely blown away by their music. Hot damn !
oobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ambrosia, Little River Band there were so many great soft rock and bluesy bands back in the 70's even pre Steve Perry Journey was awesome and more like Santana which ironically Journeys Gregg Rolie and Neil Schon helped form Santana then later formed Journey. Gregg Rolie is the singer on Santana's Black Magic Woman
If this was your first Doobie Brothers I would love this to be your second (Before McDonald joined) "Take Me In Your Arms" one of their best, rock, violins and a killer guitar solo, and "South City Midnight Woman" and "It Keeps You Runnin" with McDonald...smooth, smooth, smooth. Then listen to Fleetwood Mac (before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks) "Hypnotized", judging from what you're listening to and liking (Steely Dan) I think you'll LOVE it too. No, I promise you'll love it!! I love watching your videos! Thank you for bringing great music to a new generation. And definitely soon "LAYLA", Eric Clapton. Stay safe. Love, Light, and Music.
They were awesome in concert. I liked both era’s without Michael McDonald and without. Their sound system in concert was perfect - what you hear on their albums is what they sound like in concert, with a little more “icing on the cake” with more adlibs and solos.
This cut is off the Doobie Bros "Minute by Minute" album, which is a gem, top to bottom. They started out as very Southern rock, and did very well there. But then they took Michael McDonald on and their scope broadened dramatically. Seriously, a very worthy album for your review.
AND they had a terrific lead singer in Patrick Simmons. And he's dynamite, truly. But all those vocals - when you say "all six could be singing on this"... it's ALL Michael McDonald. And that's the most obvious link back to Steely Dan because he was arguably the best studio vocalist of his time. I was about 18 when I first tried singing along with McDonald vocals - DON'T DO IT! He's a freak of nature, and mere mortals could seriously hurt themselves trying to mimic him. With all that shade and tone and hue in his voice, no one realizes t just how high those lines go.
More music that takes me back to my youth. I saw TDB at the state fair grounds in Des Moines with a long dark haired beauty who moved back to town just the day before the show. It was her birthday.
My all time favorite by the Doobie Bros is ---"Another Park Another Sunday." --- It takes me instantly back to the shore line of Jackson Lake, in Grand Tetons National Park, near Colter Bay, on a late summer's evening, when the lake was placid, as sun was going down, just as a park ranger was nicely asking us to leave, thus being torn away from collecting drift wood for my grandmother. #nicknlexrequest

Doobies one of the greats. Many hits - my personal favorite is Blackwater. Very different but so atmospheric. Close your eyes and it paints a picture of the bayou - wind chimes, spanish moss, the Mississippi. Some great harmonies and accapella singing.
The Doobie Brothers have a long list of hits that you should react to. All their music is very good. If you dig deep into the Doobies you will love all their stuff, I guarantee it. They were very much a part the LA scene in the 70's. Mas Doobies!!

NEVER heard of the Doobie Brothers? Wow...makes me realise all you reactors must be genuine. When you grow up with music for 40'odd years, it's hard to believe not everyone knows it. Thank you...great to watch you two.
What killed Chicago was the death of Terry Kath.
You said it, Doug!
MINUTE BY MINUTE GREAT DOOBIE SONG. 👍
If you ever get to see the Doobies live. Treat yourself!! They always bring it!!
The Doobie Brothers "Jesus Is Just Alright" & "Takin' It To The Streets"
One of my favorite songs of all time, because I never get tired of it after 40 years!! "He came for somewhere back in her long ago" is probably the best intro line to a song EVER! So glad you got the chills listening to it.
He came FROM somewhere back in her long ago
The Doobie Brothers are fantastic. Check out their other songs.
Oh yes, The Doobies are definitely another rabbit hole for the two of you. Black water and China Grove are two songs that you will absolutely love .
From His Solo Career,, Michael McDonald
"I Keep Forgettin'",, An Absolute Must Hear.
This album “Minute by Minute” and the followup album “One Step Closer” are both phenomenal. Give them both a listen! 🔊🎶🎵🎶
Livin' on the Fault Line is a hidden gem.
Handclaps! Relentless, and perfection!
The Doobie Brothers were huge. So glad you're diving in. 😊 👍🍁 Cheers guys.
Takin' It To The Streets and Another Park Another Sunday are two fantastic Doobie songs. This was the first concert I attended, got the tickets for my 12th birthday. Jay Ferguson was the opening act and it was just such a fantastic experience.
They have quite a few good songs:
Jesus is Just Alright
Another Park, Another Sunday
Taking it to the Streets
Black Water
and more...
A couple connections to Steely Dan. Michael McDonald sang backup on several Dan songs.
And Jeff "Skunk" Baxter left Steely Dan to join the Doobie Brothers.
"Long Train Runnin" is an absolute must listen.
Nice video! Love the way your little dog passes by in the background and just as it's about to walk out of the room, it briefly looks back at you both bopping away with a resigned expression that says, "oh God they're doing that head bobbing thing again". Then sighs and leaves. Obviously no Doobies fan.
🤣 We watched that part so many times when we realized it! Glad you caught it, too!
Couldn't stop boppin' to this over and over and over again, in 1979. Really can't grasp it is 43 years old.
Back in 1981 when I DJ ed at my First Sizeable Dance Club I just couldn't just wait to this song on their system because I could finally hear this in a way it needed to truly enjoyed... It was heaven...
the chorus - it's that MODULATION up a key that makes the song soar.
“Doobie Brothers” out of San José, CA. 18 Albums, 4 Grammy’s. “What a Fool Believes” Michael McDonald on Lead Vocals & Piano. Pat Simmons & John McFee Harmonizing. They are starting their 2021/2022 Tour. They took this song to #1! Follow up with their “Minute by Minute”, “Listen to the Music”, “Long Train Running”, China Grove”, “Black Water”, “Jesus is Just Alright”, “Taking It to the Streets”……SanJoséBob
You would also love the group Chicago . Great music .
You saw Michael McDonald talk about doing the backing vocals to Peg in the "Aja" documentary. Listen to Peg again....his voice is unmistakable.
Nice vocals Lex on Black Water! (Black Water is great for a headphone test.)
A classic. As is Long Train Runnin'
LOVE REACTION VIDS. My younger cousins blame me for their foray into great music.
Such a distinctive voice....so many great/sad memories from this song....I was 19!
This song is Timeless! They will play this until the end of time….😊
"Minute By Minute" is one of the rare instances of an album where there's not a weak song on it. The title track is particularly outstanding.
This song was definitely part of my 45 rpm collection when I was between 9 and 10 years old have loved it ever since never gets old. 🙏🏽✌🏽❤️
And back in the 70's we were tired of hearing it on the radio.... Good times.....
Ok, here we go. The Doobie Brothers are in my top 5 bands of all time. They are so versatile, and at that time period, unique. The vocals, the musicianship, the production…..spectacular!!!
Dive in and I’ll go with you. Love it.❤️
Anything from Minute by Minute, especially the title track.😍
Doobie Brothers had several hits before Michael McDonald joined but they changed directions with him.
You're right on "Black Water".
"Minute By Minute" is a favorite (with Michael).
Have a great day!
"What A Fool Believers" won the record and song of the year at the 1980 Grammy's.
Earth, Wind & Fire ! Oh boy, I can't wait for you to experience this incredible band. I know you will be absolutely blown away by their music. Hot damn !
Any specific song suggestions for when we decide to dive in!?
“That’s the Way of the World”-a stunning classic from Earth Wind and Fire.
Reasons - the live version ! Stunning !
oobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ambrosia, Little River Band there were so many great soft rock and bluesy bands back in the 70's even pre Steve Perry Journey was awesome and more like Santana which ironically Journeys Gregg Rolie and Neil Schon helped form Santana then later formed Journey. Gregg Rolie is the singer on Santana's Black Magic Woman
If you're going to dive into the DB's catalog, don't miss "Real Love", a Doobie Brother's classic that most reactors have slept on !!!
Love! They should listen to Dedicate This Heart from One Step Closer too, as well as the title song!
Everyone will dance to this song no matter what. You can't help yourself hahaha
I become a foot tappin fool when I hear this...smilin the whole time....Thanks guys!
There is so much great “yacht rock” music out there!! Little River Band comes to mind and the song “Reminiscing” comes to mind. ;)
You've heard his voice before. He sings backing vocals on Steely Dan's Peg. So classy.
Yasss!!!! again!!! So many great songs from The Doobie Bros.!!!
Another great classic. One of my favorites from the Doobie Brothers. Another one of my favorites is Takin’ it to the Streets.
More music that takes me back to my youth. I saw TDB at the state fair grounds in Des Moines with a long dark haired beauty who moved back to town just the day before the show. It was her birthday.
Black Water, Listen to the Music, and Long Train Running are also must listens, phenomenal harmonies and compositions!
😂🤣 been enjoying your Steely Dan reaction vids; i was a kid in the 70’s & of course grew up listening to all this stuff, hearing it for the 1st time & being amazed back then ... this music is clearly still captivating today - has stood the test of time ... this particular song was the 1st 45 record i bought - my family got SO SICK of me playing it over & over 😜🤣🤓
Doobies one of the greats. Many hits - my personal favorite is Blackwater. Very different but so atmospheric. Close your eyes and it paints a picture of the bayou - wind chimes, spanish moss, the Mississippi. Some great harmonies and accapella singing.
Have loved this song since I first heard it as a kid.
Love that youve found the Doobies.. They go hand in hand with Steely :)
I saw Doobies with Steve Miller band and literally knew every song played that night . It was amazing
The Doobie Brothers have a long list of hits that you should react to. All their music is very good. If you dig deep into the Doobies you will love all their stuff, I guarantee it. They were very much a part the LA scene in the 70's. Mas Doobies!!
"Long Train Running" next please....... such a groove.
Wait! What? How did I miss that the first time? Full album reaction? CTA? Outstanding!❤❤❤
