I was working at a record store in Santa Cruz when I saw Tiran Porter coming to the store and I quickly put on Minute By Minute so he'd hear it when he entered. When he came in he looked at me like "C'mon, Man!" and then I just smiled at him as it dawned on him that I wasn't playing The Doobies.
It was a new album by Larry Carlton. He was surprised and delighted...and bought the album (with about 20 others!)

The Michael McDonald version of The Doobie Brothers was actually a huge change in the band's direction. The Doobie Brothers used to be a pretty hard-rocking band in their earlier days. You should check that early stuff out. You won't believe it's the same band. I prefer the rock stuff.

Love the Doobie Brothers. Funny thing is that Jeff Baxter became a consultant for the department of defense. His specialty was in missile defense. He is still involved in national security issues. All of this was an outgrowth of his interest in electronic music and the algorithms. Black Water and China Grove are two of my favorite DB songs.

When they toured for this album, Skunk primarily played a Roland guitar synth which I think is prominent on this and some of the other tracks. His solo on the end of "How Do The Fools Survive" was legendary, and accomplished in one take.

The Pop era of The Doobie Brothers, w/ Michael McDonald, is great, but please don't sleep on the pre-McDonald era, w/ Tom Johnston, when they first became hugely famous. They had many Rock hits w/ Tom, such as "China Grove" " Listen To the Music" "Black Water" and many more.

I don't understand at all why people who prefer pre-McDonald Doobies keep saying it became too "pop". You can prefer whichever one you like, but I think Michael gave them more of an R & B feel, not Pop! (OK, maybe "What a Fool Believes" was a bit pop, but still a great song...). The former Doobies were just more basic rock or soft rock, that's the main difference (besides Michael's incredible voice).

Recommend you listen to the song that got you hooked, My God, live at the Isle of Wight, 1970. There is a surprise here for Lex (think Ian Anderson "speaking" through his flute).

So, the story that I read and confirmed by Don and Walt, is that after Michael joined the band as backing vocal to record Katy Lied, Royal Scam, and Aja, the band mates and producer Gary Katz told Michael he was too good to continue as just a backing vocal, and to venture out on his own. Spread your wings as they say. It obviously worked out joining the Doobies and this great album. Later by 2006, he joined Steely Dan on the band's summer tour, both as the opening act and as part of the band. Wish I had gone to see them back then. Michael is such a huge force on his own.

I'm pretty sure I know the live performance of "What a Fool Believes" that you saw, and if I'm right, then the seated guitarist you're referring to is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. Before he was with the Doobies, he was with Steely Dan! In fact, he is the one who suggested that the Doobies hire Michael McDonald (after Tom Johnston had to leave the band for health reasons), because he knew McDonald from when they worked together on Steely Dan songs. Baxter is such an interesting man.... believe it or not, he ended up working as a defense consultant, and advised U.S. members of Congress on missile defense. 😮 I mean, seriously! The story about how he came to work with the government on missile defense is too long to review here, but it is explained on his Wikipedia page.

The Doobie Brothers are absolutely crucial to survival in the modern world. Some Michael MacDonald helps too. Great music from the first album, right though the addition of Mr. Macdonald. Guitar layering was much more prevalent in the beginning, where Michael brought keyboards front and center.
Blackwater from the early albums gives you the true origins of the band. Michael steered the band to a more vocal, and yes, more commercial sound.
Taking it to the Streets is very RADIO friendly from the later stuff, but the energy is infectious (and Michael blows the doors off their hinges).

The first concert I ever went to, was The Doobie Brothers. It was their "Minute by Minute" tour, Wings Stadium, Kalamazoo, Michigan. I was 16 years old. And let me tell you, there was lots of "Doobie" in the air. Great concert, great album. This whole album is great. You should also do "It keeps you running", "Jesus is just alright", "Losing End" (both by the Doobies and Michael's solo version), and "For someone special", featuring their bass player, Tiran Porter on vocals. And yes, my older sister was/is in love with MIchael McDonald. Great reaction.

Michael McDonald made great music with the Doobies, but he joined after they had already had some major success. He replaced Tom Johnston who was having major health issues. To get a great sense of their early hits, go with Listen to the Music, Black Water, China Grove or Long Train Runnin. Definitely time for more Doobie Brothers music. This album is full of great tunes with MM. What will happen now is that you will experience their sound with MM and Jeff Baxter, then you will start going back into their earlier music. There is a lot to hear on Minute by Minute. Also Living on the Fault Line has some really good songs, and as an old fella, I've got to tell that a lot of their early music was really good too. I like Stampede, Toulouse Street, The Captain and Me, and What Were Once Vices are Now Habits. Many will suggest China Grove and Long Train Runnin', but I will tell you to give a listen to Dark Eyed Cajun Woman, Without You, and The Captain and Me, or just do the whole album. The same with What Were Once Vices, that whole album is worth a listen. Black Water, Eyes of Silver, Down in the Track, and Another Park, Another Sunday, all great tunes from this great album.

I was going suggest “How Do Those Fools Survive?” from the same album, but you’re probably right…just listen to it all, maybe in little marathons. The Doobie Brothers had two distinct phases. The original group was fantastic and featured Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons. They were more rock and acoustic oriented and big in the early to mid 70’s. When Tommy got ill Michael McDonald stepped in and brought a more jazz feel. I must admit the transition was shocking back then. But I quickly came to like the sound and MM’s undeniable talent. Plus the ‘Skunk’! This is still one of my favorite albums.

Similarly to Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers have had a couple of different iterations. Formed in the early 70s in Santa Cruz California, they were originally a laid back biker band, after the first radio hit with "Listen to the Music" they consolidated their sound on the album The Captain and Me in the early mid 70s. In 1976 the band leader and lead guitarist Tom Johnston became chronically sick and dropped out of the band. Michael McDonald stepped in and a whole new keyboard driven sound emerged. The MM version of the DB was born during the disco era. Older fans hated the change. I liked both bands but preferred the earlier hard rocking guitar version. You should try the above mentioned album and just run it through. Forner SD guitarist Jeff Baxter had joined the earlier DB version after Steely Dan stopped touring, and remained with the group through the change to the MM version. Personally, I truly love MMs voice, but he shines best in his solo work, and yes, you'll love the Dukes of September with Fagen, McDonald, and guitarist Boz Skaggs. I saw them live in 2009 when they first formed.

Michael McDonald changed the Doibie's direction when he joined. His voice and the new-found sophistication of the back-up vocals came as quite a surprise to long-time fans. Jeff (Skunk) Baxter on guitar and Tiran Porter's remarkable bass lines made Minute By Minute one of the very best albums of the decade.

What a kick watching you two groove on some Doobie Brothers! I love "Losin' End" from Takin' It to the Streets, as well as the title track and "It Keeps You Runnin'". As far as pre- Michael Doobies goes, I love the album What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and the cuts "Tell Me What You Want (And I'll Give You What You Need)", "Another Park, Another Sunday", and "Flying Cloud".

I loved them so much prior to his arrival… and hoping you’ll check the pre-Michael stuff too, because it’s marvelous.

There are a lot of good Doobie Brothers to do and there’s a lot of good songs on this album. For guitar sake you got to listen and react to Jeff Skunk Baxter founding member of steely Dan who plays steel guitar and a lot of great guitar solos on the first three Steely Dan albums. He has some killer solos. Jeff skunk Baxter is the relaxed guitar player you’re seeing on the videos. On this record the last song is How Do the Fools Survive you have to react to it, you will be crushed if you don’t.Baxter He did the solo in one take and he smoked it right out of the park. Literally (smoked it) they are the Doobie Brothers after all. Another thing on this album would be some of the Patrick Simmons songs as he is one of the founding members of the Doobie Brothers. It wouldn’t be fair not to react to at least one of their founding members. There are a lot of people that don’t agree with you about Michael McDonald and think that he took Them on a circuitous path. But there are many paths up the mountain. You should listen to taking it to the streets but I prefer Living on the Fault Line….. better for what it’s worth it’s a jazzy album not as commercial as Taking it to the Streets, it’s all good though. It would appease the hard core Doobie Brothers fans if you reacted to a Patrick Simmons song off of Minute by Minute. I would check out, Don’t Stop to Watch the Wheels. You won’t truly satisfy the hard-core Doobie Brothers fans until you listen to some Tom Johnston songs of which there are many great ones. Long Train Running is a great place to start. It’s hard to go wrong just got to figure out how to make yourself happy along the way, everybody else will follow. Thanks again for another great reaction. 😍

Completely disagree. There's a lot of die-hard original Doobie fans but the Doobies are just as good with McDonald. He breathed some new life into the band whether you want to believe/agree or not. I'm not discounting the original lineup, they're great, but McDonald did NOT ruin the band.

Count me in the early Doobies camp, just because they and Elvin Bishop among others were big in my senior year (1974). One memory, me as the nerd hanging with a couple of cheerleaders (who were amazed when I came to school with my right hand in a huge bandage from surgery after being run through with a switchblade) and the Doobies “China Grove” playing in the background. Ah, the early days.
