It's funny because when Michael McDonald joined the Doobies, many said thay didn't sound like the Doobies anymore.
True-- because they weren't the real Doobies any more. They had morphed into the Michael McDonald Freaky Falsetto Band.
Great reveal! The Doobies did not become famous when Michael McDonald joined the band. They were already huge, with multiple hit songs, including this one, which is more swampy than their other early hits. You should definitely react to more of the same, like "Listen To the Music" "China Grove" "Jesus Is Just Alright" or "Long Train Running," all classic Doobies.
The personel in Steely Dan and the Doobie Bros were ALL Los Angeles studio musicians. They all played (usually uncredited) on many songs by many artists. Many of them are multi instrument players.
They ALL came to L.A. from different places. Mostly NY and East Coast.
The Doobies (both versions) and Steely Dan.......WOW ! the material that keeps on giving !
You guys are so entertaining. FYI the singer song writer here is Pat Simmons. He as well as Tom Johnston, both guitar players, write and sing. Their music is so versatile. Long train running is a great one to get your reaction to. BTW Pat and Tom are Doobie founding members. MM filled in for awhile during Tom Johnston’s temporary leave of absence. They still tour today. Another rabbit hole??
Yes!
China Grove another great one with Tom, imo.
I like Pat’s song called Depending on You
Yeah, Patrick Simmons dominated the early hits, McDonald the latter half of the DB tenure. Seems one of the few bands where their fans accept two lead singers with equal gratitude
@@The_Great_Darino MM is my 3rd favorite DB lead vocalist.
Saw them in 2011 and is still the most entertaining show I have been to. When they had done a few encores people began leaving but we noticed that the Doobies were hanging around the side of the stage, slightly out of sight. So we went up and they were waiting to talk to anyone who came up to them. Amazing guys and great fun to listen to. No pretensions at all, just loved being appreciated.
The Tom Johnson era of the Doobie Brothers is well worth exploring. Even this track isn’t all that much like the rest of their material. But they had a long roll of great albums before Michael McDonald.
Summer of 1973-74 We played this 45 record on an old turntable.
Tom Johnstone was the original vocalist for many of the Doobies hits prior to the entrance of Michael McDonald. Now on the 50th Anniversary Tour of the Doobie Brothers both Tom and Michael McDonald are singing together on various hits of the band.
The band at this time consisted of Tom Johnston: guitar, Pat Simmons: guitar, Tiran Porter: bass, John Hartman, drums, and Michael Hossack: drums (yes, the Doobies had two drummers!!). Two additional musicians who worked on this album would later become full-fledged members: Keith Knudsen and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter(who was formerly of Steely Dan).
This is Patrick Simmons the lead guitar singing. Their main vocalist back then was Tom Johnston guitarist Tom Johnston left the band for awhile but it was really that Michael McDonald joined the band more than anyone leaving
Ahhh, to be in high school in the 70's, a magical time. Lucky enough to see them in concert back then.
Ditto here. Well said.
Yeah, that's the thing about this era of the Doobies. Sounded great when I was 15. Still good, but not epic. Black Water and I Cheat the Hangman are my favorites from this period.
'That 70's show' was like going directly back in time to my life script! Never got to see them, but they played a big part of my ''soundtrack'! 🌝
This is 70s gold platinum. Such a classic sound.
“Pure as the Driven Snow” is another amazing Doobie song.
Oh black water keep on rolling Mississippi moon won’t you keep on shining on me
Listen to the Music is a Banger.
Pre-Michael Doobies is the *best* Doobies by far, imo... and not just because I'm not a Michael McDonald fan. I just personally love their older style.
Listen to the Music
Long Train Runnin'
China Grove
Rockin' Down the Highway
...and the list goes on.
Clear as the Driven Snow…Ukiah, The Captain and Me, Toulouse Street. All hidden gems.
YESSSSSSSSS!!!
I guess I'm lucky that I love both versions of the Doobies. ;-)
The Doobie brothers were born without Michael, but he gave them a new sound, a new vision of music. With or without Michael, the doobie brothers are amazing!
@@MarianoBG65 To each their own, my friend.
This is before Michael McDonald, put Pat Simmons is singing most of this song who was still in the band after Michael Mcdonald joined. Tom Johnson did most of the lead vocals before he left and Michael joined. Current the band is doing show with both Tom and Michael. A friend saw them in Vegas last week.
How can you be a Doobie fan and not be hip to the soulful twang of Pat Simmons??? 😆
The musicians of the Doobie Brothers are more than competent and creative. Michael's addition only changed their musical direction, not their excellence.
They had several hits before Michael joined them, though people now don't realize that.
Have a great day!
I truly love this song... Year's back I use to sing in a 3 part harmony goup and we covered this song...
That was Pat Simmons in vocals, Tom Johnson was the main vocalist for the first 5 records. Michael McDonald cane on basically on the 5th album tour & sang on the 6th album “Takin it to the Streets “ because of Tom’s illness at the time
Michael McDonald took over when Tom Johnston got sick when they were on tour . Two camps for the band. Personally I like them both. They are different but they both so good.
If you want classic Doobie Brothers, listen to Long Train Running, China Grove, Listen to the Music... just for starters. You'll love that time for the band.
"Tell me what you want (and I give you what you need)" is an awesome song from this phase.
Growing up in the 70's the Doobies (pre-Mike) are the soundtrack of our lives. This album - What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, The Captain And Me, Toulouse Street, The Doobie Brothers, and Stampede (the first Doobies album with Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of Steely Dan fame), are all amazing.
Exactly. I was in shock hearing MM- I lost interest in the band, didn’t like his voice at all.
@@bobhalvorson4374 I'm a fan of MM for his backup vox/harmony work with Steely Dan, but tire quickly of his lead vocals. I know that's not the most popular sentiment, but that's where I'm at. There's just something so personal about those early Doobies tracks. They always conjure memories of good friends, girlfriends, good times, and important events of our teenage years.
Me too. I had a cassette of The Captain and Me, and drove across the county after college listening to it.
Imagine a bus load of elementary kids singing this song on the way to a school field trip, and you have my 5th grade experience when this came out. 🤗
Ha! I JUST wrote that in my comment! :D That was me and a bus load of kids in Louisiana 1975, singing the last verse/chorus harmony on our way to school or home :D.
@@mvunit3 outstanding!
We sang Black Water with teammates coming back from playing in a basketball game in eighth grade or so. Good stuff!
Great visual. This was my mom's favorite song. Was on the radio constantly, lucky for her! Great song. They had so many pre and with MM. Love him and Doobies. Have seen them a number of times!
"Dark Eyed Cajun Woman"........YES! Love the Doobs!!
This is my favorite Doobie Brothers tune!
It was fun being a teenager, and growing up in the 70,s absorbing all the great music, that will never be duplicated, in my. Opinion?? Clayton
I believe the Doobies are now touring with both Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald, and Patrick Simmons of course, who wrote and sang on this. I believe Tom left in the late 70's for personal and health reasons but returned when Michael left for a solo career.
This particular song of thiers was one of my favorite Sunday morning ( after Saturday night ) tunes along with
"Silk Degrees" album by Boz or "Moon Dance" by Van. They would give your head time to recover.
It's so cool watching people discovering this music for the first time. I've been listening to the Doobies since their first radio hit which was Listen To The Music (ironic) in 70 or 71 and I loved them from the start. They have gone through many changes since their first lineup but many of the original members are still around. You really need to go back to the beginning because through all the changes the music has maintained a high level and all these songs that I've heard a million times on the radio still sound as fresh today as they did 50 years ago.
I loved this song when I was a little kid, such a nice groove. Still fabulous!
Interesting that you never heard early Doobies -- "Black Water" was a big hit on the radio, and so were "Listen To The Music" and "China Grove". "Another Park Another Sunday" was another Tom Johnston hit, before he had to leave the band (health reasons it seems). There are lots of other wonderful Doobie/Johnston songs, too -- I'm especially fond of "South City Midnight Lady" -- it would be difficult to find a more enchanting and exquisite Doobies tune.
The doobie Brothers had 5 albums and many big hits before Michael Mcdonald joined including this one.
You should check them out
What a gem ! It’s Cajun style.
This song is great to sing along with.
Patrick Simmons sings this and also plays the acoustic guitar on it. Patrick Simmons was still in the band when MMcD joined the band.
I really like this but The Captain and Me is my favorite album from them, China Grove, Long Train Running, great tunes
Early Doobie Brothers are awesome!
Great track before Michael Mcdonald joined, early 1970's. Also try China Grove, listen to the music, long train running
This was a huge radio hit. So memorable! Love me some Doobie Bros anytime! Thanks Lex for surprising Nick...very entertaining!
I am going to Love!!!!!
Bill Payne of Little Feat played keyboards with the Doobie Brothers as a session musician and sometimes with the touring band.
I Saw the Doobie Brothers
Perform " Black Water "
at Madison Square Garden NYC
in the 1970s.
A Full Dixieland Band
Accompanied Them.
LOL! I chuckled when Nick said "It sounds nothing like the Doobie Brothers." Since Michael McDonald came later many people at the time thought he sounded nothing like the Doobie Brothers. Both are great, but the Tom Johnston era is more rocking which is my favorite. When I was a kid my dad played the Doobie's album "The Captain & Me" all the time and I still enjoy it. Thanks for the reaction, Nick N Lex. I don't have time to comment a lot these days, but I still check out your channel when you post because you're a great reaction team. Keep rockin'!
We were at a friends house after school and he played this album. It had just come out and been a fan ever since.✌️
The whole album - _The Captain and Me_ - is vintage Doobies.
Black Water was from the Doobies 4th studio album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, with the original band lineup:
Patrick Simmons - composer, acoustic guitars, lead vocals
Tom Johnston - backing vocals[19]
Tiran Porter - bass guitar, backing vocals
Keith Knudsen - backing vocals, dubbed-in drums
John Hartman - drums
Written & Sung by Patrick Simmons (never left the band) and two albums before Michael McDonald would join the group (following Skunk Baxter who joined from Steely Dan on the album after this one - Stampede).
Novi Novog played the Viola on this track - Not a member of the group but also played on the song "Takin' it to the Streets for the Doobies and played as a session player with as wide a variation as Bonnie Raitt - Prince - Michael Jackson & Frank Zappa!
She was part of the group "Chunky, Novi & Ernie" (2 albums -73 & 77)
"Clear as the Driven Snow" is a deep cut, but it will take you on a JOURNEY and is not to be missed.
I saw the Doobie Brothers on their (1st ) farewell tour at Red Rocks in 83.
I saw them at the Spectrum in Philly for that same tour.
I never adjusted to McDonald doing the singing for the Doobies. It was a huge change in tone, going from rural music to a guy most comfortable with blue-eyed soul music. Little Rive Band was a great guess.
The short story - Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons founded the Doobie Brothers. Had a number of really big hits in the early part of the 70's (Listen to the Music, Long Training Running, etc.). Johnston got sick and had to sit out a tour, and Michael McDonald was recruited to fill in. When it became clear that Johnston wouldn't be able to return, McDonald became a permanent member. He brought his own unique sound to the band, and a whole new era of hits. But the band was very successful before he came along.
Eventually, the band split up. For various reunions, it was primarily Johnston and Simmons, but McDonald still joins them, and in fact, all three are touring this summer as an anniversary celebration.
I highly recommend reading "Long Train Running", by Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons. It's a great retelling of the Doobies' story.
Next up, you should listen to some of those early hit records. Start with their first smash, Listen to the Music.
This is the heart of the Doobies.
Patrick Simmons is the only member of the Doobie Brothers who has been in every lineup of the band. Saw them on tour last year, and they still seriously deliver! The VH1 Behind the Music episode on the Doobie Brothers gives very solid backstory on how Michael McDonald joined the band. Worth a look.
As soon as the violin came in, I was half expecting Nick to shout out “it’s Kansas!”…
And yes, Michael McDonald did change their sound quite a bit…
Same here!! 😂
This is absolutely the best Doobie Brothers song! ❤
Another Park Another Sunday is a treat
Some people call this the "real" Doobie Brothers :-)
Next up - The classic Doobie Brothers sound was established on the songs Long Train Running and Listen To The Music. These are the songs that founded The Doobie Brothers as a mega band. The harmonies and musicianship shine through and the Doobie's signature sound was established.
My favorite Doobie Brothers song, their defining song IMO. Heck, this is on my top 10-20 songs of all time. I love it!
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go ALEXIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!👍👍😜😜
Black Water comes from the LP "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits". Awesome LP. Totally worth your time to listen to all of it.
Great, great album indeed.
Michael McDonald didn't become a member until almost ten years after The Doobies were formed. This is the original guitar/singer, who is still with them today.
SNAP Nick! Nice choice Lex. I love the Doobies with and without M. McDonald. Cheers
I'd like to suggest another band from that era, The Atlanta Rythm Section. They were a really talented southern blues rock band that fits in well with the Doobies, Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers. "Spooky" "Imaginary Lover" "Not Gonna Let it Bother Me Tonight" "Champagne Jam" are some of their hits.
So fun! Thanks for sharing this one. 😜😎🤪
The Doobies has many hits prior to Michael. A lot of people really reacted negatively to the introduction of Michael McDonald. I'd say both lineups were great in different ways, unlike Chicago, which became schlockmeisters after Kath.
Lol!! “schlockmeisters”. Pretty harsh. True, Chicago did become rather sappy following Terry Kath’s death. My biggest complaint about post - Kath Chicago is the horns were not as prominent during Bill Champlin era. Peter Cetera leaving the group in ‘85 to go solo was a major setback, as bassist Jason Scheff is very good but very different than Pete.
This was very commercial for 1974 when it came out. Doobies started off as northern California biker band and the Hells Angels loved them. Michael Mcdonald came in and turned the band more towards r&b but they had huge hits before Mcdonald ever came into the band. China Grove has one of the best riffs ever recorded to 24 track tape
Yep, that riff is fire.
I Cheat the Hangman. Haunting riff on that song. But yeah, the Doobies were a bluesy biker band...before their soul/R&B/fusion period. Livin' on the Fault Line is a really overlooked album. Chinatown and the title track are ridiculously good.
Now that's the mother of all REACTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alexa, I love the way you sing song. ❤️😋 Doobie Brothers rock in all incarnations.
Pre MM Doobies was a pretty wonderful time. I love most of the MM Doobies stuff too but they are so distinct from each other IMO. Black Water is super atmospheric. My favourite pre MM song would be "Natural Thing". Great choice for this video. And when i describe this type of music, I say "music from the country" as opposed to "country music". It sounds like it comes from the land.
First saw The Doobies in 1977 on the minute by minute tour. Great song 👌
Great reaction!! You both really make these “ first hearings” so much fun! For those of us old-timers to hear these great hits from our youth through your ears is a real treat!! Keep up the great service. Been a fan since you both started the YT channel a couple years ago.
Saw them in 1974 when this album was released. I was a young lad of 16. Years later I had pulled my camping trailer into a remote campground in Oklahoma. Behind the counter was a gold record on the wall. The lady checking us in said her husband had been road manager for Doobie Brothers when this album was released.
Kudos for the guesses Nick. But you were never going to get it! What a fun video. It seems all you need to know has been provided below by 'La Familia'!
So many other great tunes on that album. Please do more off of it!!! These are the REAL Doobie Bros.
so many transitions in this band...they basically can play every genre
This is the voice we are
Use to such a great song!!!! Tjis was alot of fun u two
Cheers
Nice...!!!
Another great song by the Doobies that was sung primarily by Pat Simmons was "Toulouse Street" from the same titled album. I bought the single of "Listen to the Music" & I believe "Toulouse Street" was the "B" side, and I fell in love with that song.
sound is a lot better today!
Yes we have a new mic. Sound should always be good from now on. Thanks Jeff
this is the REAL Doobie Brothers!!!!!
Another Park Another Sunday is a great DB song
That was fun and hilarious!
Living on the fault line is a pure Gem , great stuff, you haven’t seen nothing yet from the Doobies, happy trip.guys
That was a great guess with that clue!!!
Sooo Fun! Great guesses! Now, the "before Michael" rabbit hole. I'm going to give you tunes others might not...."Without You," "Eyes of Silver," "Road Angel," "Another Lonely Park, Another Sunday"....dang soooo many and not counting the massive hits!
That was a good one
You must hear South-city midnight lady
I got this inadvertantly on a 45. It was originally the B side of Another Park Anpther Sunday.
I always loved their "South City Midnight Lady"...
This was a song that our 7th grade music teacher taught us to sing. It was so fun ❤
I never bought a lot of 45's way back when, but when I did...this was one of them. There's some pretty cool trivia about this song and how it became a hit, do a wiki search on Black Water when you have time.
Great reaction. Early Doobies are also very special.
Love this. Lotsa fun. Great tune. I get flashbacks of trout fishing in rural PA in the spring of 1975. Thanks guys.
I've always luved Southern Rock.
Tricky. That is one of their most "southern band" sounding songs. I was fortunate to have grown up in the SF Bay area, when the Doobie Brothers came from. Pat Simmons went to nearby Leigh High School and I had a roomate that played in a band while in high school with him. I used to hang out in a friends used record store (where I bought my first Genesis album) and Ty Porter (the bass player for the Doobies Brothers) used to come in quite often.
There are lots of great pre-Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers' songs. You guys are into a treat as you explore that era of their music.
My first time checking you guys out. Y'all pretty cool. This is old-school classic Doobie Brothers long before Michael McDonald came along
That whole album I that good ...
