Music “Should Be” Color Blind! A child of the 70’s, I can honestly say, I never thought of color. A good start with Doobie’s: China Grove Long Train Running Black Water Jesus is Just Alright Taking it to The Streets (McDonald on lead vocals)
:D When scientists finished mapping the Human Genome they found that all human beings share 99.9% of their DNA. That being said, IMHO, the only important differences that exist between one human being and another are the quality of the thoughts that exist between their ears and the spirit of kindness that fills their heart of hearts. :) Nothing else matters.
My favorite was Taking it to the Streets! I wore out my cassette tape and when CDs came out played the heck out of it! Doobie Brothers and Journey Eagles what great music we had!
Bingo. "Trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created." He was getting nostalgic and she never realized he was thinking that way about it back then, so she's trying to apologetically trying to be nostalgic with him when they're catching up. Sad.
You might have heard: Listen To The Music, China Grove, Long Train Running, Taking It To The Streets, Blackwater. And other great hits. The Doobie Brothers are still playing 50 years later.
I always imagine a skit of McDonald pitching this song to the band like it was his coming out as a singer/songwriter starting with the beep beep boop beep boop beep beep boo beep then busting out that growling whisper of a voice and them completely dogging him, then fast forwarding to them 8 deep on stage or however many just barely playing their instruments looking at each other in disbelief as McDonald does his thing with crowds eating it up. The band still in shock as McDonald takes over but provides somehow with the contrast of what the band sounded like before with the songs you mentioned above has to be one of the most extreme transitions ever. McDonald is undeniable but arguably the antithesis of the sound of the doobies previously. I refuse to look up the real story keeping my fantasy of how it went down intact.
The guitarist sitting down is none other than Jeff "Skunk" Baxter who really is a rocket scientist and chaired the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense in 1995. He has consulting contracts with the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. He consults for the US Department of Defense and the US intelligence community, as well as defense-oriented manufacturers such as Science Applications International Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corp., General Dynamics, and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.
@@payleighsteele1540 and Spirit. Oddly enough he's also sitting while playing in the Spirit video I Got A Line On You. He's been a session guitarist for just about every artist you can think of, plus touring with Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, and Billy Vera and the Beaters. He's even played keyboards for several artists. LOL, he even scored a movie, The Curse of Inferno.
“What a Fool Believes” is about the guy’s unrequited love for a woman who never saw him as anything but someone she knew from long ago. She was his dream girl, he was just a past acquaintance to her.
There are 2 periods of Doobie Brothers, they started with Tom Johnston on lead vocals but he had health problems so Michael McDonald took over. Guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter knew Michael from Steely Dan before he joined the Doobie Brothers.
Those mikes are the classis Sennheiser. They were often used for kick drums in the early days, but Michael McDonald started using them when he was singing with Steely Dan.
The Doobie Brothers were from San Jose, Ca in 1970. Yes DB, the name is taken from the fact that they did enjoy their 'Doobies'. The name started out as a joke but hell it was the 70s. Tom Johnson was the original lead on most songs but something happened to him. I think he had health issues for awhile. So they got Michael McDonald until Tom eventually came back. This band has SO many hits through the 70s and 80s. Back in the day you could drop the needle anywhere on their albums and you'd be happy. I suggest Black Water. It'll give you a totally different reaction. Seriously and Chelsea thinks so too. Lol
If you like Michael McDonald's voice do listen to his duet with PattiLaBelle "On My Own", it cannot be described with words. Also with James Ingram "Yamo Be There". The song is about a guy who mistook a fling for something real and he keeps hoping she will return although they never really had anything, hence the words"trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created" she just gets up and walks away because their "love story" was only ever in his daydreams.
I always felt like this song was about a guy who had a mad crush years ago, but it was one sided. They meet again and "She had a place in HIS life. He never made HER think twice."
That's what I thought, too. She apologized for not thinking of him the same way he thought of her. He's a fool who believed in something that only existed in his head.
Long Train Running, Taking It to the Streets, Minute By Minute, Black Water, You Belong to Me, and so many more. The Doobie Brothers are massively talented!❤
He has a magnificent voice. He sang with Steely Dan, then the doobie brothers and his solo career and the doobie brothers again. Great music great songs
Gah!!! I can't even begin to express how much I love that u are checking out everything I grew up listening to!! Again, I could give u a list a mile long, but some of their more popular songs are China Grove, Listen to the Music, Long Train Runnin', Black Water, Jesus is alright with me, & Takin' it to the streets! Michael Macdonald takes the lead on this song, but he has solo music as well! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, check out I Keep Forgettin! 🙏🙏🙏You will get a very nice surprise!! 😏
Love you going outside your box and finding other great music. Music ( all genres) has so much to offer. Keep digging bro, none of us have heard it all. Just us old cats have heard a little more.
You heard the lead singer, Michael McDonald a few days ago with Don. It was his solo song, I Keep Forgetting. Michael has a very unique voice. Hard not to recognize. You won’t be disappointed by The Doobie Brothers catalogue or Michael’s. Thanx. Love, from Oklahoma 🤍 PS-Give Simply Red a go, please. Begin with I Keep Holding On. Also Bobby Caldwell, What You Won’t Do For Love.
Seen them last year, Black Water ,Jesus is just alright,China Grove, there are so many great songs. Love the Doobie Brothers ❤🎶🎶 That's Michael McDonald this was in the 70's BP.
There are two types of mic, condenser (delicate used in studios) and dynamic (more rugged, used on stage). That mic looks a bit like a Sennheiser MD4 dynamic mic but not exactly. Who knows, you're going to have to look at historic dynamic mics from the mid 70's through mid 80's to find out for sure. And it is the second type of brother, the no relation type. If you want to bop, there is nothing better than their Listen to the Music.
This song was co-written by Michael Macdonald (singer) and Kenny Loggins (they both recorded versions). It’s about a guy who gets together with an ex that he completely blew it with and is still so clueless he thinks he still has a chance when she was clear he doesn’t. Professor of Rock has a great episode where he interviews Kenny Loggins (also a legend you might want to react to) about the writing of this song. Kenny and Micheal collab on the amazing This Is It, could Kenny Loggins to start with.
Great reaction! That smooth sound is sometimes called blue-eyed soul. The song is about a guy that harbors fond memories of a romance from the past, but it's all in his head. She was nice to him, but he imagined it was more. He runs into her later in life, fondly reminiscing, but she doesn't recall it that way. She apologizes that she has to go, but he believes in the false idea he has anyway.
The Doobie brothers had a long string of hits and southern rock sound before Michael joined them and brought this new keyboard sound and vocals to the group. This song was HUGE and so was the album Minute by Minute. great album. great songs.
The Doobie Brothers was my first concert. It was July 12, 1979. The stage was covered in doobies from the fans throwing them onto the stage. One of the band members bent down, picked one up, and smoked it immediately. The whole arena was lighting up and smoking. Everywhere you looked, you could see the smoke through the lights. It was a great concert experience.
This song is reminiscent of like a 20 yr high school reunion where a guy meets a former classmate that he had huge crush on. His memories are fantasies of the place she had in his life, when in reality she hardly knew him and barely even remembers him.
You just did Michael McDonald’s Solo song last week, and this is him with the Doobie Brothers. Remember the guy with the hair and beard, singing and then he kissed the girl who sang on the song? McDonald's solo career consists of nine studio albums and a number of singles, including the 1982 hit "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)". Michael H. McDonald (born February 12, 1952) is an American singer, keyboardist and songwriter known for his distinctive, soulful voice and as a member of Steely Dan (1973-1974), and the Doobie Brothers (1975-1982, 1987, 2019-present). McDonald wrote and sang several hit singles with the Doobie Brothers, including "What a Fool Believes", "Minute by Minute", and "Takin' It to the Streets." McDonald has also performed as a prominent backing vocalist on numerous recordings by artists including Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, and Kenny Loggins.
It's going to be hilarious when you realize how many awesome songs this group put out and how many of them you probably know but didn't know it was them
Written by Kenny Loggins, whose song, "I'm Alright" was the theme in the movie 'Caddy Shack". I only know the Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald because of my kids, but I liked Loggins and Messina (then just Loggins) when I was in college. "Footloose" is probably at least as recognized even by younger generations because their parents had the VHS tape when they were kids. Thank goodness for children. I'd have missed a lot of music if mine weren't blasting it on their boom boxes. I think this song is more about the fact that the relationship was over a long time ago, but he never really let go. She means something to him, but he can't see (doesn't want to see) that he never meant much to her. He runs into her somewhere (at a party or something?) and she pretty much ghosts him, but he still thinks somehow it's still on and she'll come back into his life.
Michael McDonald's - I Keep Forgettin' We're Not In Love Anymore and You Belong To Me -- great songwriter and collaborator in the 70s & 80s! Keep up the good work!
Doobie Brothers out of San José, Ca. That’s Michael McDonald on lead. The song is about a guy who believes that the girl has the same feelings for him that he’s had for her all these years. “She had a place in his life. He, never made her think twice. What a fool believes, what he sees, the Wise man has the power to reason away, what he feels to be, is always better than nothing”. This one went to #1 on the charts and won the Doobies a Grammy for Best Song of the Year. Their “Minute by Minute was #1 for 3 weeks on the charts and won a Grammy for “Best Performance by a Group”. They’ve put out 14 Albums. “Listen to the Music”, “Long Train Running”, “Black Water”, “Jesus is Just Alright”, “ I Keep Forgetting”, “ Taking it to the Streets”, they are still Touring in 2024 and selling out Stadiums….. SanJoséBob
And this is a live performance, too!! When you hear the differences in the studio version after this version, and see how close both versions are, you will see how tight this band is.
One of my favorite bands ever. Saw their final tour in the mid 80’s. They went out with a Blaze. Onstage. 😂 Next you need “Long Train Running”, and “China Grove”. There are so maybe…🤟🏼
I’m 61 and remember this being the album I got for my birthday one yr. I was around 12-13 . My first teen type party . We played the Doobie Brothers over and over 😊🦠💚🦠💚
Yes! second lead singer Michael McDonald. Joined the group in 1975. The first lead singer was with them starting in 1971. What a Fool Believes 1977. Michael did do a song Real Love in 1980. Then they broke up and he was solo and doing duets. after that!!! Listen to the duet with Patti LaBelle of Labelle ON MY OWN in 1986. Love his voice. Yes organ, synthesizer.
Michael McDonald is one of my favorite artists ever. His voice is unmistakable and everybody wanted Michael on their track. So many duets and features. I've seen Michael live and it is such a fun show. We stood the entire time dancing...everyone...it's impossible to sit still. He was headlining and Chaka Khan was on after him. It was amazing! He's a legend.
Hey BP you just reacted to Michael McDonald "i keep forgetting" about a week ago....YES this is Michael McDonald Also!! he joined DB when one of the band mates became ill, he set the world on fire!!
She is not lying to him. He is trying to recreate an old relationship with her and deceiving himself that she will return to his life and that it's not really over. " No wise man has the power, to reason away, "
The Doobie Brothers were a huge 70's band. You'll get a list of their hits from your listeners. I just wanted to comment on Mike. A good friend ran sound for him for years, so I hung quite a bit. Mike is not only a hugely talented guy, but he is a stellar human being. Also, they weren't Brothers, but the name was appropriate for the times! 😊
Michael McDonald had a successful solo career after he left THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, he sang the theme song for a GREGORY HINES and BILLY CRYSTAL movie in the 80's, "RUNNING SCARED" / SWEET FREEDOM
Doobie Brothers also sing "China Grove".......check it out.........LOVE ME SOME DOOBIE BROTHERS. Saw them on May 30, 1975.... Tampa Stadium.......Along with The Eagles, Seals and Croft, Charlie Daniels Band, Linda Ronstadt.....My first concert...........
The Doobie Brothers are awesome! We had an abundance of great bands back in the 70s! Listen to the Music, Long Train Running, and China Grove and Black Water also big hits for the Doobies.
Michael Mc Donald has one of the most powerful, soulful voices. He & Patti La Belle have a beautiful duet On My own. Love Take It to the Streets, which is a great 70's song of empowerment to rally people together. Saw the Doobie Bros in a Day on the Green back in the 1970's, fantastic group. This song is about a guy who thought he and this girl had a real connection, while she had no idea of his feelings. Basically he was fooling himself.
Love the Doobie Brothers ♥️ those of us who were fortunate to have our preteen & teen years in the 70s and young adulthood in the 80s with a booming economy DID have the best of all generations. We got to experience the growth of the music industry after the birth of Rock-n-Roll to what it was in the 60s, how it changed in the 70s living through Disco. And I don’t care what anyone says. I loved disco. There’s nothing better to dance to then disco. But the 70s gave us the best rock ‘n’ roll to now be known as classic rock ‘n’ roll. We had it all in music was every bit a part of it. There was something for however you were feeling. I loved the Pop, the oldies, the crooners Dean Martin Tom Jones, of course Elvis big Elvis fan😁 Big Hair Bands, we had it all. Yes, we’ve had a sweet life.
This has been my ‘happy song’ ever since it was released in 1979 and I was 13. Always puts a smile on my face and you can never go wrong with any song that features Michael McDonald aka The Silver Fox.
They have his old buddy Jeff "Skunk"Baxter playing in the chair there, they both recorded with Steely Dan in the 70's. Michael was a later addition to the Doobies.
No matter what DB's song you listen to, they are all hits! "China Grove" which is describing a small town in Texas that the band went through once while on tour is great song for the next reaction for sure. The Doobies are one of San Francisco's finest rock bands from back in the day..
the doobies also had some great instrumentals- as well as guests( maria muldaur-im a woman w-o-m-a-n) singing "cheat the hangman " slack key soquel rag -best guitar work ever- best version of black water?DEFINITELY done during lockdown!!!!!
I love Michael McDonald’s voice, he sang “I Keep Forgetting “ that was sampled by Warren G.! He sounds nothing like Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees but they both made great music in the seventies, the songs is from 1978! The Doobie Brothers are an iconic group! They are not blood brothers! 🤦🏽♀️❤❤
You should see a show with all of them together!! They came together to make a reunion concert video with all the drummers, guitarists, organists and so forth!! ALL of them!! It was epic!! 🇺🇸💋😎👵🐺🌵✨💋💋💋
LOVE the DOOBIES!!! ..and, again: YOU can "SPOT" Michael McDonald - ANYWHERE he sings....just such a UNIQUE VOICE... I know you enjoyed his "I Keep Forgetting", the other day!! DOOBIES have a LOT of GREAT TUNES!! ENJOY!!!
Ah, Michael and that blue-eyed soul. Facts. He was on several Steely Dan tracks on background vocals. There's a great interview with him on how difficult it was to do those backing tracks for the Dan. Apparently, it was pretty intense.
Music “Should Be” Color Blind! A child of the 70’s, I can honestly say, I never thought of color.
A good start with Doobie’s:
China Grove
Long Train Running
Black Water
Jesus is Just Alright
Taking it to The Streets (McDonald on lead vocals)
Definitely Black Water followed by China Grover
Nice recommendations

Some of the most soulful songs by this group are: it keeps you runnin, real love, thank you love and taking it to the streets. Please and thank you!
And this is a live performance, too!! When you hear the differences in the studio version after this version, and see how close both versions are, you will see how tight this band is.
This is a an awesome live version, the studio version is cleaner but this is gorgeous.
One of my favorite bands ever. Saw their final tour in the mid 80’s. They went out with a Blaze. Onstage. 😂 Next you need “Long Train Running”, and “China Grove”. There are so maybe…🤟🏼
You do know they are still touring and have put out new albums since then right?
The mic is most likely a Sennheiser flat-front dynamic mic such as the E609. They're still most commonly used to record electric guitar amps.
Thanks!
Love the Doobie Brothers
Hey BP you just reacted to Michael McDonald "i keep forgetting" about a week ago....YES this is Michael McDonald Also!! he joined DB when one of the band mates became ill, he set the world on fire!!
She is not lying to him. He is trying to recreate an old relationship with her and deceiving himself that she will return to his life and that it's not really over. " No wise man has the power, to reason away, "
I could listen to Michael McDonald sing all day long. He has one of the most super distinctive voices of the 80's.
This is one of the BIGGEST songs of there's!
Long Train Runnin', Black Water, Takin' It to the Streets, China Grove.....all great hits by the Doobie Brothers!
Exactly. Music is the universal language!!!!
This song is circa 1979 …… EXCELLENT !!!! Doobie Brothers &
Michael McDonald ……..
The Doobie Brothers are awesome! We had an abundance of great bands back in the 70s! Listen to the Music, Long Train Running, and China Grove and Black Water also big hits for the Doobies.
Doobies are legend.
And his duet with the late R&B singer James Ingram!!
@@lydmarl.475 Thanks for your reply, I'll have to check out that collab.
@@mtngrl5859 the track is “Yah Mo B There” check out the video, they almost sound like one!!
Another great "brothers" band is The Bellamy Brothers " Just Let your Love Flow"
"If I Said You Have A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me" "Old Hippies" "Lover's Live Longer"
I've heard this called the happiest sad song ever.
YES!!! THANK YOU! despite the jaunty groove ad sick harmonies, it's actually a sad song about denial.
Check out Jesus is Just Alright from 1972 album Toulouse St.
Song from the mid 70's. Good Times
Michael Mcdonald was part of the Doobie Brothers and had a solo career after that. There's really no one like him. Amazing.
the doobies also had some great instrumentals- as well as guests( maria muldaur-im a woman w-o-m-a-n) singing "cheat the hangman "
slack key soquel rag -best guitar work ever-
best version of black water?DEFINITELY done during lockdown!!!!!
Doobie Brothers
Taking It To The Streets
Minute By Minute
Real Love
I love Michael McDonald’s voice, he sang “I Keep Forgetting “ that was sampled by Warren G.! He sounds nothing like Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees but they both made great music in the seventies, the songs is from 1978! The Doobie Brothers are an iconic group! They are not blood brothers! 🤦🏽♀️❤❤
Two other Doobie Brothers songs I absolutely love...Give Me the Beat Boys (soulful) and Takin' It To the Streets (also soulful).
My heart sank when he compared Michael McDonald’s voice to the Bee Gees.
ENJOY!!!
Its a live performance of a timeless classic.
they had hits, but the beauty of the Doobies were that tey were just so incredibly consistent
Lol my brothers nickname is Doobie fr man i love love Micheal McDonald's voice
You've got to see their outdoor concert in La. It's unbelievable. Please please check it out
The King of Blue Eyed Soul right here- Michael McDonald.
“ It Keeps You Running” from the same concert!
Doobies are legend
My favorites are from their earlier stuff - China Grove, Long Train Runnin’, Black Water, Jesus is Just Alright, Rockin’ Down the Highway ….
I saw the Doobie Brothers while in college - yet another great university-sponsored concert. Michael McDonald had recently joined them
The Doobies and the BeeGees fall under the same category. Blue-eyed soul. White boy Blue-eyed soul.
Michael McDonald, from my hometown Ferguson Mo. , proud to say that
This one of my favorite songs LOL
I do LOVE me some Mike McDonald though.
You've heard him when you watched the "I Keep Forgettin" video.
Every song on their albums were hits! Michael McDonald also sang for other groups and later solo or in duets: jazz-rock!
Ah, Michael and that blue-eyed soul. Facts. He was on several Steely Dan tracks on background vocals. There's a great interview with him on how difficult it was to do those backing tracks for the Dan. Apparently, it was pretty intense.
