Table From a Slab Of Ash - Woodworking

  • Another table gets shipped off to it's new home at the offices of a local newspaper outlet in Sweden. Made from a single slab of ash. In 2018 I salvaged a fair amount of logs at a private residence, they all came from a big ash tree that was 189 years old. Later that year I cut them on my sawmill and now the slabs are nice and dry and ready for use. If you have any questions about any particular step of the build feel free to ask them in the comments and I'll reply as soon as I get the chance.

    Very beautiful piece of Ash . It's highly underated in my opinion. Ash has similar colors and characteristics to white oak and is much cheaper to buy , easier to work with. Great job 🍻

      @@backstromwoodwork566 Hey, that's what Your video did for me! I think we are more alike than we are different. I used to work like this, but now I'm 68 and retired. I still do some wood work, but not Nearly the quality or capability that you do. And it brought me a joy this morning to get this note from you.

    Love Ash! We have a ton of ash trees that fell, had milled and now I turn into tables. By far one of the most underrated woods! This was a great build. Side note.. how do you like the Makita saw? Ive been tying to decide on Makita or Festool.

    • @backstromwoodwork566
      @backstromwoodwork566  3 роки тому

      Cool! Yeah definitely underrated. I like the makita, the only thing i wish it had was just a little bit more depth of cut, i think it maxes out at 55mm. But other than that it’s been great. With a sharp blade it makes a very square and straight cut. I own other festool machines and they are definitely a joy to use, so you cant really go wrong with a festool if you have the money to spend.

    Amazing desk. Thanks a lot for the video. Could you share what stain you used to finish this? I would like some good stain choices for ash wood. Thanks a ton. Cheers.

    • @backstromwoodwork566
      @backstromwoodwork566  3 роки тому +2

      Sure! The finish used was Osmo hardwaxoil (polyx) and I think I did 3 coats. Lately when working with ash I’ve been doing a basecoat of boiled linseedoil mixed with turpentine, I find it brings out more contrast in the colors of the wood since osmo can look a little dull on it’s own. And thanks for your comment!

      Thank you Nick! My 3 favorite finishes are rubio monocoat, osmo and odies oil. The table in this video was finished with osmo, but most hardwaxoil finishes gives more or less the same result.

I also have a big video planned showing the entire process and a little bit of history of why I built it and how it works. It should be out by the end of the year.

      Awesome, looking forward to seeing what changes have evolved since your original version. Not sure if you were able to address the sagging bar issue, the builder of the sawmill linked below has a very clever solution utilizing a strong magnet

      Great tip! Had not seen that one but he sure did a lot of things right building that sawmill. I have a very crude way of straightening the bar (a bolt pushes up on it from underneath) but using magnets is way cooler.

      @@markfromwestcoastwoodcraft7633 to address the bar sagging, and presuming you are using an Alaskan type mill which has moveaable components especially the vertical support system is to pull the verticals apart slightly and re tighten the bolts.

    How many trees are planted in place of one of those tables? 😳😁👍

    • @backstromwoodwork566
      @backstromwoodwork566  3 роки тому +3

      None, mother nature has already seen to it and didnt need our help. I knew the property very well from where those logs came, It’s in the middle of a forest actually. The surrounding area has a healthy stand of ash trees, most likely younger offspring from the two older trees that was taken down. They were old, almost too old, one of them was already dead standing. It’s the circle of life I guess, and if we let nature run it’s course then there will be no need for us to go out and plant new trees because that is already happening, all the time. But thank you for asking, it’s a good question to ask 😊👍

    What kind of finish did you use on this table?

  • @kevinmorin7965
    @kevinmorin7965 3 роки тому +1

    Strictly a design comment, not work flow or execution; I consider the legs of thick flat bar too 'thin' compared to the mass of the top- I'd have used a box/rectangle/or even shaped sections and welded and rounded the weld edges? The top looks- may not be- looks; out of mass proportion to the legs. Visually heavier legs would have been more aesthetically appealing in my view?
    Why not just use router template for bowties- then chisel just the corner- 1/4" if you want pointed ties? The step of chiselling recess to fit- when you could cut both bow ties and recess w/ router bits & templates seems time excessive?

    • @backstromwoodwork566
      @backstromwoodwork566  3 роки тому

      Hey Kevin, thanks for the feedback, love to hear some design input. What you describe is exactly what i proposed at first to the customer, but he eventually felt he wanted the legs to feel as small as possible, and so solid flatbar was used. And you’re right, that way of doing bowtied is a lot faster, I just never got around to doing it, but it’s on my to-do list 👍

    Wat's the mix ratio of BLO and turp?

    • @backstromwoodwork566
      @backstromwoodwork566  2 роки тому

      I just eyeball a 50/50 mix. The blo turp mix is nice sometimes to add as a pre-finish, i think it adds a little bit more warmth and contrast to the wood.
