Your honesty and integrity stand out way above many of the other comparison videos! Please please continue that type of video. It is so important for all of us to get a complete and unbiased opinion of whatever detector. Trust is a very difficult confidence to earn from vewiers in any kind of presentation. And you my friend are at the absolute top of my list and I personally love every one of the videos you have shared with us. Just look at the number of subscribers you have gathered from the metal detecting community. Again I would be very interested in any type of comparison or simply an honest opinion from you on any detector you use. Thank you for your effort and time you sacrifice to put all this together. The editing of all of this must be a tremendous chore. ATB, and GL and HH.

I have the Ace 350 and the AT Pro. I'm not sure if you mentioned it. But the Ace 400 has the iron audio function which the Ace 350 does not. It's a great feature when detecting trashy sites. It helps keep your sanity if it's not too late already. Thanks for your hard work and advice.

I've been catching up on your vids this weekend. My daughter got married just before Thanksgiving and I've been playing catchup at work ever since. So....it has been a real treat to watch your vids! For an "armchair detectorist" like me, these videos are fabulous! I eventually will be buying a detector and gear so this info is great! I enjoy all of your videos. Your sense of wonder as you explore is so upbeat and positive. Keep up the great work.

A note on discriminating. Years back my buddy hunted with a basic Fisher detector, just a couple of knobs , with almost no discriminating . I was using a Garrett Freedom three with 4 knobs for setting discriminating. He always found plenty of nickels while in all our hunts I found only 2 nickels.. He dug more junk than I, but, found coins I would just miss. As Chigg said to much discrimination might not work in your favor.

I used the ace 250 for a while the gave it to my bro in law, he loves it. A really good starter machine. 300 and 400 are basically the same with different loops. Another thing you didn't mention is the ding dong tone when it's on a coin, or coin sized/shaped target. The tones for other targets is noticeably different than the coin ding dong.

Great video!!! Totally pleased, and excited about your descriptions, and tips. I had an Bounty Hunter 25 years ago. Bought it used in a pawn shop. No instructions, so I had problems just running the machine, and apparently the unit had its own issues. It made noises when you would shake the unit around in the air, as you described in this video.
I've recently been looking for a new interest that would take over my firearms hobby. Something that would allow time to be with family, relax, and enjoy nature. This particular video has helped put me back on track with Metal Detecting.
Despite the trust I lost in the metal detecting equipment in the past, which was partly my fault, for not seeking help, your video has changed my skepticism.
I've watched many Metal Detecting videos in the last month. But, none gave me any thoughts of ever trying them out again, except for your video. It actually gave me the thought of....try Metal Detecting again!!! So. I will be purchasing one for my new hobby.
Thank you for your excellent video.

Just wanted to thank you for the end depth of how to use metal detecting on the Garrett 400&300. It has that me understand a lot about them and other machines. I am new to this and I appreciate the information. I just turned 60 and decided to have a new hobby and I chose metal detector. I live on a fixed income and I know I would never be able to afford that but I lease I understand what to expect on these machines and the sounds. I truly enjoy your videos and your adventures. You are a very entertaining. I will be getting probably a cheaper one because I can't afford that being on a fixed income but maybe one day I will if I find something really nice and I can sell. Continue with your videos and stay safe . PS sorry about the last part it's just the mother in me.

You gave us some good info on these detectors, and I'm in agreement with it all. I bought the 400 because all my other machines were getting a little to heavy for my ageing body to swing for 4 or 5 hours at a time. After swing the 400 I really felt the difference. The larger coil is a little heavy and didn't balance the machine very well so I went ahead and bought the smaller one and now its perfect. The only thing that would make it more comfortable would be in the arm cuff extended up my arm a couple more inches.

Does not sound like you are crazy about these two machines. Could you recommend a machine for under $400? My priorities are silver jewelry and silver coins. I also might want so do some shallow water hunting. This would be for a beginner who would like a intermediate machine. Last question,,,,, in jewelry mode, would that detect silver (pre 1964) and gold coins as well as gold and silver jewelry?

    Mr
Aquachigger, I am a recently new subscriber but I was hooked after the first few videos. I served 8 yrs active duty army airborne infantry and have been diving for 15+ years. I think it is absolutely amazing that you find the treasures that you do. I must say, I have watched nothing but your videos on UA-cam for the last week and I am absolutely inspired. My birthday is next week and I have told my wife that "I must have a garret at pro. " or I will purchase one on my own! haha. I live in upstate sc and as I'm sure you know the confederacy flourished in these parts. I'm extremely excited to start hunting my local Saluda, Pacolet (near Cowpens battlefields), and the lucious Green rivers as soon as spring arrives. Please keep a "good ole boy" veteran who aspires to reach your level of river treasure hunter in mind. I would absolutely love to be able to start detecting this winter or "late fall." Looking forward to your future videos and best of luck brother.

Ok I’ve had the ace 250 and some of the older Garrett GTI and ads Machines I can say if you are going to get a Garrett the 400 is really a good starter I agree with the 8/5 coil but it does help to use the large coil in places like Fields and pastors where you don’t get a lot of targets but for the money if you are not sure of getting in the hobby or just want to find something you lost a used pawn shop detector that has pin point is sometimes the best way to go I personally picked up a bounty hunter time ranger for $40 and it didn’t even look used

I know this video is old but I found it to be super informative. You have made a much better detector-ist my friend. I just bought the 400 from Radio World here in Canada, since they are an authorized Dealer of Garrett and I am so glad I hung out with you until the end. Half of my searches have been deemed horrible with it, primarily due to the big coil. I also have arthritis and need all the help I can get from design. The biggest problem I have with the big coil is it does hammer multi targets so easily and here in the Rock of Northern Ontario I can see I need that smaller loop. We have a lot of mid to late 1800's Silver coins in the Ghost Towns along the "Old Nippising Road," but the pioneers threw nails, nails, and more nails it seems everywhere.
I really liked seeing the open air tests you did, and the whole video was very well done. You must make Garrett quite proud. I am going to give my machine a little shake test as well, now and really liked the tips, tricks, and value your opinion highly. I mean it really doesn't get much better when it's been Chigged... Thanks bro

willthefuneverstart Thanks for the reply! So I would be able to submerge it up until the control box? And I'm just getting familiar with how these machine actually function so I'll do some read ups on that auto-ground balance you mentioned. I live in the mountains on the boarder of Canada and I am trying to decide what machine to purchase. I'd basically be using it in abandoned mines and streams. Dunno if that helps strike up any ideas.

Excellent, you took your time with each detector, explained their features and modes. The best was how everything worked. Beside about these two detectors, I found it more interesting a "class" between various modes with real world, above ground, test in how modes really make a difference. Unreal in one mode, coin I think, just passed over the gold coin. I use a ATpro in coin mode some of the notches. Sold me, I am going to try out the relic mode now. and get a smaller coil. A old saying, but a experienced Detectorist ( not a word) said the best discriminator is a shovel. Video not to long at all, learned a lot. Thanks!

I know this was an old video but for a beginner with an Ace 400 is was pretty dang informative. Thanks a lot. Ya just sold me on the idea of getting an additional 5 x 8 inch coil. Thanks

I had a fisher m-scope that worked great until it was twelve years old. I am about to retire and have been looking to get a new detector for my new time requirments. This would put me on a good track. I enjoyed the review and the way you explaned the operation of the two. Seeing how they work from the above ground level explaned well how they work under ground. Yes, it would be nice to see and expland how your equpment that you use works, so we can determined what would for others.

Hello Aquachigger, first time to comment but watched many of the awesome video's you make. Today is my 65th. birthday, that's right my number is 11-17-51 haha. Never had a detector but always wanted one, so one of these would be a good start.
    Keep them coming...

Thanks for the comparison. The coil factor now makes sense. Would also love to see how you do some of your research on sites.

I understand you were demonstrating depth, and we could see the test pieces but does anything change with the density underground?, signal strength? Clay? Under rocks etc?

Yes more videos like this. Explaining how to deal with multi-target discrimination, or at least how you deal with it/what your discerning ear hears going on would be great.

So the 5x8 really helps in trashy areas picking out the good stuff. So I should purchase one for my AT Pro or should I try the off brand coil co.?

Chig, I think that you doing other vids for beginners and the novice crowd would be a good thing! I really enjoy your style of educating, and of course all the hunting videos are awesome! It really doesn't matter if someone else has covered the subject or not. You may have a completely different audience. There is my two cents on the subject, and you didn't even need a machine to find it! :)

I just started using the Garret AT-pro (after using the Teknetics T2 - "which I loved BTW lol") so I'm still figuring out the AT-pro, but the entry level ACE models might be good for my kids to get started, I'm impressed with these ACE models in relic mode. Interesting overview Chigg, thanks!

Thank you so much for the excellent video on the 400 Garrett verses the 300!! I'm new to your channel and metal detecting. I got the 400 and my sister got the 300. I had it in coin mode most of the time!!! I'm so grateful for the information you are putting out there. I love your channel and watch as much as I can. Yes I would love more videos like this one. My brother told me about your channel, he is a bottle hunter. Thank you 😊

Would the smaller coil make that much difference on the AT PRO as well? I have the PRO and have been considering getting the smaller coil for it but wasnt sure if it would be worth the money spent? Your opion would be great. Thanks in advance.

I agree 100% on the smaller 5 x 8 loop. I find I get almost the same depth have better target separation and much easier to swing.

I live in an area where there was a lot of copper mining in 1800s to early 1900s.
How well would either of these metal detectors work here?
The reason I ask is because there is also a lot of iron.
There is boatloads of copper just lying around, and a lot of unhunted ground I can think of just off the top of my head.

YES YES YES!!! True detector here. I love the Garretts. I'd really like it if you could do a review on the Garrett AT Pro. I love all digs, fresh water, sand and dirt. The Garrett AT Pro is what I hope to buy next Spring. Love your videos and all the information you give us is always very helpful. Thanks Chig and ATB.

Thanks for the info! I just got a Garrett Ace 300 for Christmas (2018) ! I will admit - I've never done metal detecting before. I will say that - It's one thing to just read about it in a book or manual, but I find it much better to SEE it in action!

I am brand new to this sport and I bought one of the 400 machines. I haven’t done a lot with it but so far I’m pretty happy with it. Thanks for the great video I plan on watching more your videos. After I get used to this detector is there a significant difference between this detector and its price and a lot more expensive one?
