If ur budget was unlimited what detector is the BEST for each of the following? 1* depth on land 2*underwater/snorkeling deep 3*water proof/knee deep 4*mud/wet sand 5*dry land/dry sand 6*fully submergable pinpointer Also what is the top tech not available to us yet? ie Do you know if any exist with a screen to show an approximate shape of the metal detected yet?
Don't know how I missed this video, it's spot on. I started with an Ace 300, struggled for a year and almost gave up on detecting. Instead I got a Simplex and everything turned around. Absolutely no question that it's the best value on the market, though some people seem to struggle with the definition of "value".
Ace400i, 4years detecting, 2years of wanting to upgrade but had to prioritice my money somewhere else. It is just so inconcistent machine overall. Byt garrett makes themself SO visible that it is an easy go to option for someone who is just getting started and does not know what they want!
I started off with a $94 detector I got online with an 8" coil. Seen it sold on different sites under different names. Within 4 months found enough clad to get equinox 600. Yes you can find treasure with inexpensive detectors. The nox I am in love with..
Merrill, I have learned a ton from your videos, thank you! Could not agree more. Bought a Bounty hunter first, very first hole found oldest coin to date 1655 French laird. Got hooked on hobby! Moved to ace 400 did not like. Then to simplex, love it. Light a big plus! First night dig a kg2! Now 3 years on nox 800, worth every penny! Keep up those videos, you definitely have a fan base!
I'm just over a year into this hobby, and I started with an Ace 300. I just got my hands on a used Simplex+, so I'm still learning it. That being said, I don't plan on getting rid of my Garrett, and will instead let friends and family use it if they come out with me.
yh that's exactly what I did. It would be a waste to get rid of the Garret. I found the simplex to be less distinguishable but it kinda does the job. I found the xp dues to be better from reviews. Tho just as I wrote that I find that he covers it haha: ua-cam.com/video/mAaBZbIFA_E/v-deo.html
My first metal detector was the Ace 250, it lasted 8 years of abuse. I've also owned many detectors costing $600/$900, but always found myself grabbing the Ace 250 simply because it was as reliable as the AK-47 and broke down into a small backpack for travel. It does the job on dry sand. On wet sand the sensitivity must be turned down to half. I recommend anyone thinking of taking this up as a hobby to borrow or rent a detector before making any purchase. This hobby isn't for everyone.
@@dirtfishingnewfoundland4353 ace 250 a relic? Put a seasoned detector operator on it and they will run circles around a new guy with a 3030. 250 is an ok detector. Yes there are better ones in that price range but the 250 is still a real option if its what is available to you. I think.
Thank you for the advice. I'm not defending that other video as I've not watched it but some videos are beginners giving advice to other beginners. They appreciate that you might not want to spend $250 just to enter a hobby that you're not sure you'll stay in. That's not just metal detecting but shooting, cycling, kayaking etc. Professionals, like yourself, would recommend better equipment but that might be out of the range of the person who doesn't even know if they want to keep doing the activity. So it is striking that balance.
My vanquish 340 outperforms my friend and brothers simplex, I admit the simplex is better built and a great machine, but will still take my vanquish over it.
That’s fair. I have the 540 which is above the price point. I chose the Simplex because there is a lot more customization for the price. On a saltwater beach the vanquish is superior.
Thanks! I have been watching for a long time and have learned a lot keep up the good work. Sure would like to see you do a video out at Lake Mead the waters going down and the treasures is coming up. Unfortunately they did find some human bones of the gangsters that were part of the mob in Las Vegas as they showed on the news😳. I would suggest wear your heavy boots the tall ones and you’ll be fine OK goodbye for now . I will continue to be watching you and learning thank you so very much. Carolyn
Thank you so much Carolyn! I would love to do Lake Mead and actually looked in to it. Metal detecting is supposedly banned there. I’ve seen the videos so I will look in to it more.
I just bought a bounty Hunter pro. You are starting to make me feel bad. You are right about false signals on wet beach sand. How do i fix this problem. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks
Thanks SO much for an honest review!! The analogy about if you wanted to start fishing then you go and see the fisherman just makes sense. I just got a metal detector for Christmas and now it's going back and exchanged for the one you recommended!
I respectfully disagree especially about the depth. Garrett does make machines that last a long time. They have not innovated in a very long time and their security business seems to be their priority now.
@@MetalDetectingNYC I sold the 350 bought a minelab then a Fisher and I still do okay but I used to get some deep targets for that 350 like up to 18 inches in the wet farm field
@@MetalDetectingNYC also I find if you stick to one machine for a while you get to know it very well it becomes an extension of your arm and you can hear deeper beeps
Finally started detecting in Oct... I bought the Simplex+ and am happy with it, great value for money... Pulling coins in knee deep water today at the beach in 🇿🇦
Started out with Ace 250 and also bought a Harbor Freight 9 function for $40 as a backup. The 250 would false out all the time and I hated using it. I found more with the HB machine. Now I have a Simplex+ and I like it!
I want to add another comment. I often get asked, what's the best detector for starting out? Now I know what to tell them and I have a picture of the Simplex on my phone. Thank you for that, Merrill.
though I had some problem with sea water It also ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH land for finding any things very easily. (thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn
I’m new to this hobby and bought a 300 ace. I’ve figured out how to read it on dry land but would appreciate any pointers on what to expect going into a creek with it where there’s wet sand of course.
I love my Ace 250, I ditched the stock coil and got the 8.5"x11" DD coil and now, it's a coin hunting Beast, I got the Simplex when it came out and Love it more, but I still use the Ace 250 from time to time.
I too ditched the stock coil n replaced it with a Nel Sharpshooter DD coil.Works much better on wet sand. Got a Vanquish 540 which is a world of difference so the 250/Sharpshooter only gets used on rocky areas of the beach.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I bought a 250 (got a great deal) and thought my being a greenhorn was my problem. Then started thinking the detector was bad, I got to the point where I questioned my sanity. I didn't know there were issues with different soils let alone wet and dry sand when I started. I was getting falses and digging ghost target till I was going to just give up. IMO the 250 will do more to defeat beginners than expand the hobby. I think the 250 should be priced at about $99 and issued with a warning not to use it in sand, or anywhere in Florida.
I will add my own thoughts as I have been spending the last several weeks looking for a new detector. There are two big dogs out there on the market, Minelab Vanquish and Simplex. What kills the Vanquish is the pre set HIGH iron bias on the 340/440. Then on the entry price 540, Minelab decided to slap a big 12 inch coil on it which renders it useless in heavy trash areas such as parks. Their solution, provide a 540 pro pack with all the bells and whistles for nearly 500 bucks! You can almost buy a freakin NOX 600 for that price! Minelab engineers did a fantastic job on building the Vanquish but the sales department failed miserably. Where the Simplex lacks in depth, which is not much, it makes up for in recovery and it’s water proof feature. I’m ordering one if I can scrounge up enough change from the couch. My old Bounty Hunter Tracker IV got busted up when I got attacked by a dog a few weeks back 😆 Also not a bad machine if all else fails, I’ll buy another one for 70 bucks at the big box store. It served me well for nearly 5 years!
I say respectfully; Equinox all day! I own the 540 and the Simplex. Simplex is the best value out there. The Equinox is the best out there. That remains to be seen after I get my hands on the Legend and Deus 2. I dont work for anyone. I love detecting and will swing whatever works best in NY soil. As of right . now that is definitely the Equinox.
@Mr. Perfect I left a comment previously but I guess only part of it uploaded. It sounds like you got a great deal with all of those extras. I can only find the Vanquish 540 for $499 with two coils and the Nox 600 at $649. That is a $150 difference for a completely different class of detector. At that point I wouldn’t care about the Minelab Pinpointer and would make do with a cheap one. Prices also change, last week at KellyCo the Nox 600 was 593 after a not so secret coupon was added. In my opinion the Vanquish 540 is an amazing machine but for the money it is not worth it when you can buy a Nox 600. Here’s a link a to a used Nox 600 with good waterproof headphones for $400! facebook.com/groups/usedmetaldetectors4sale/permalink/1934480663412952/?sale_post_id=1934480663412952 Now, for the money the Vanquish 340 at $200 would make a fantastic beach machine in wet saltwater sand because their will be hardly any iron at the beach and the targets will be spread out. Take it to a park though and you will miss good targets due to the preset high iron bias. Again, I believe Minelab makes the best machines out their with their Multi Iq technology and the 540 is a powerhouse but they failed on the points that I previously mentioned. I’m currently putting together a Simplex with tools and everything for $334.17.
Black Bear, good comment. We are down here in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, and 3 local MD clubs all met at Fort DeSoto park for Minelab's WORLD premiere of the Vanquish detector a while back. I am told it uses pretty much the same electronics as the Nox, which makes it top of the line, BUT, to me, without having it be waterproof, it was a slightly less expensive detector that the Nox, if you were not a water hunter. BUT.... considering that the vast majority of the 80 or so of us at this product reveal already had our Nox's, no one purchased a Vanquish that evening, as we already had the same electronics, but in a machine that was also underwater capable! Take Care Rob / FlThunder
This is the best metal detecting video on UA-cam hands down! I'm getting back to the hobby after about 10 years. My Minelab Excalibur and Sovereign XS2 Pro are dinosaurs compared to today's detector technology.
I bust a gut on this video! I started out in the late 1970's with a White's coinmaster 1 and up. In 2020 I started detecting again with a Garrett Ace 350. No numbers on my screen to show what I was looking at. Good machine, found alot of items but not the AT-pro I now own. There are MANY good machines out there. Knowing your machine will help owners find GREAT items but having a better machine will help you find more. Shear number of hours hunting will find you more goodies no matter the machine.
When I first got interested in detecting I did my homework to research for a really good detector. It was soon clear there was one that stood out over all the rest, the MineLab Equinox 800. Ya, it is expensive, but if you can swing the cost and you are serious about this hobby, you will never regret buying an 800.
Another happy Simplex+ owner here. I bought it in 2020 and it paid for itself in the first 12 months. I also have a Minelab Vanquish 440, and I would pick the Simplex if I could only have one. Thanks for all the videos, Merrill!
You're right about that... the Simplex doesn't do well at all near saltwater. I still take it when I go to the beach so I can hunt the dry sand with that big coil.
@@MetalDetectingNYC Yes, I mostly use it in fresh water lakes because I didn't want to drown my Equinox. It sorta became the sacrificial lamb so to speak.
Totally agree, I had the Ace 250 and after just two hunts, I sold it, would not work in highly mineralized ground kept ghosting , dug dozens of holes, nothing!
Always enjoy your videos. I hear what you’re saying about the 250, especially at the beach. However, I’d like to point out I had a good first year of detecting with my Garrett 300. Hunting in and around Charlottesville Virginia I found 48 silver coins, 17 silver rings, solid silver and gold Tiffany necklace, many flat buttons, civil war era bullets, etc. I just don’t want those with entry level Garrett detectors to be discouraged. Planning to upgrade machine in March. Keep up the great videos Merrill! Thanks.
Ace 250 can be used in shoreline. Ive found the green blue dimes ten inches down. Mineralized soil makes it run funny but after using some time you can find targets. Recharge AA batteries work great in detector.
@@MetalDetectingNYC it works though. I found the blue green dime south of Huntington beach pier . hundreds of people literally detect that pier thoroughly
I’m a noob, I’ve been detecting for less than 6 months. My first machine after the toy I bought at Goodwill, and the next one was the Ace 200 for $106 shipped. eBay, open box. I immediately wanted upgrade and I did. To the Nokta Makro Simplex+. $240 shipping, no tax. Night and day. I’m keeping the Ace. I found a bunch of coins and some silver jewelry. Even a 14K earring. But the Simplex is orders of magnitude better. Better construction, collapsible, water proof to 10ft, 5 search modes, rechargeable, like you said, and the list goes on. I’m very pleased with it. I might buy a Legend in a year or so, but I have no real desire to buy another detector now. The Simplex can be chatty, but for $240 it’s an absolute bargain. And I’ve found a ton of cool stuff with it. No real gold. Yet. But some counterfeit 14K, ha! But I will. Cheers from Bridgeport, Connecticut!
My wife has fun with the garret ace 250 what i don't understand is does these detectors have detachable batteries if these detectors have built in batteries and if they go bad you will have to pitch the whole detector and buy a new one
Because it’s an OLD model still being sold as new. Garrett was once an innovator but it’s day has passed. They are more focused on growing their security business it seems.
I’m moving to the mountains so I’m searching for the best detector for lakes and rivers. I’m so glad I found you I went back and deleted the other videos.
Merrill, I wish I had watched this before I bought a detector. I did buy a Minelab Vanquish 440 which seems to work very well at the beach. The Simplex does have some features I wish the Vanquish had like a water proof control unit and the light. Anyway, thanks for the great info.
You're absolutely right. I bought the garret one and it's been nothing but annoying. It keeps beeping and we could do nothing but just aimlessly dig up. In the end I came across your video and I'm glad my intuition was right. That their video about garret being the best wasn't true at all. I partially agree about the Simplex however I am aiming to be more pro about this so I'd rather get the Xp deus 2 God willing but I'm also looking at the Equinox.
I have an ACE 250, it WAS the best detector for $250 15+ years ago when I got mine. I bought the Nokta Makro Simplex+ because of your reviews. It is a great detector and an awesome value. The only thing I don't like is the lower shaft is really flexible, I want to upgrade to a carbon fiber lower shaft.
You’re right 15 years ago that was the cutting edge value technology. Ford doesn’t sell the Model T anymore! Garrett I am hopeful will wake up and Re-enter the business with urgency.
Many thanks for this information, Merrill. I need some expert advise. I fly drones and sometimes the battery gets ejected when the drone crashes. Can you recommend a good metal detector (or any other useful device) that is capable of locating lithium-polymer batteries in tall grass? The battery is 3 x 3 x 7 cm, with a few short copper wires of about 8 cm attached to it. What is the best technique to find the ejected battery quickly? Are there any particular detectors, coils or operating mode that maximize the distance at which the battery can be detected when it's lying on top of the soil? Many thanks in advance.
In short, almost any detector is capable of that. But remember that there are usually lots of other targets in the ground too. You would have to train your ear to hear the difference between a surface target and one that is deeper. But then again you would know the vicinity of where the drone crashed. You have an interesting question. I would go on fb marketplace and get a cheap used detector and try it out. Just be aware that there are other targets in the ground which might beep first.
good recommendation for the money the simplex is best built and value for money, but I think the vanquish is better for the beach in the wet sand for the same price
I will wholeheartedly agree with you on the vanquish at the beach. I own the 540 and I don’t like that they take so much away out of the lower models but you’re right it is still a multi frequency machine. At the beach I would go vanquish everywhere else I would go simplex.
Started with the ace 250. Didn't take long before at pro apex and now nox 800. I've have swung the simplex and if asked it is the best starter for the buck.
You can pick up a Teknetics Gamma or Omega on deals for around 250 also. Enox 800 probably my next one a 540 Vanquish looks fun too. Never owned ML. Mostly use my F75 but getting ready to buy a 7th machine just to mix things up.
The new fleet of detectors in 2022, Nokta Legend and Deus 2 are pretty incredible. Equinox has been the gold standard for the past 2 years and Simplex for a value purchase. I think that you will like whatever you choose.
Thank you, I’ve had a bounty hunter entry level machine for years and just recently learned how to use it. After learning the machine I saw that I could benefit from something a bit better and with so many choices I felt confused. This video gave me the confidence to pull the trigger on a minelab equinox 600. Legit thank you for simplifying the hobby and using layman’s terminology 👍👍
Years ago i bought an Ace 250 as starting detector and after only using it for 2 months i already knew this is not the one. Then bought a second hand Teknetics Omega 8000 and my finds just tripled.
Your next video needs to be on “why I need a pin pointer” specifically the Garrett Carrot. Many a person has bought a detector and been discouraged by locating an object but not being able to find it. I have the Equinox 600 and for the cost it is the best on the market but Minelab’s pin pointers don’t measure up. I find whether on the beach, field or park I will not be there without a new 9 volt battery in my carrot. Thanks, I’m sure most Garrett lovers would not agree with you but I’m in total agreement with you. I have not tried the Simplex but for $250 you probably can not go wrong. If someone would send me one I would definitely give it a work out. I usually get out at least three times a week. I live in Florida and the beaches have been good to me. Great video!!!!
I’m so glad I have found your channel. I started metal detecting a year ago I have the equinox 600 because I was told that’s great for starters. I’ve been watching other channels most of them in California. They make everything seem so easy. I learned nothing from them I happen to find your channel I want to thank you for helping me with your knowledge. I live in Baldwin Harbor I hope I run into you metal detecting One day. I have one question to ask you right now I’m still on factory settings can I find silver and gold on that setting?
Im sure you will run in to me someday. Im in Freeport and Baldwin Harbor is very close. There is no real setting for gold (and im not talking about the gold mode on the 800). I always hunt in all metal so that I can hear the iron (and ill admit that I can sometimes continue to get confused when the edge of a bigger piece sounds like silver). To find both you have to inference and dig. If you are going for gold you will dig up a LOT of trash. I dont mind that at all. Silver coins were last minted in 1964 so we can infer that it is high toned and deep. I would recommend you check out my Equinox Terget ID video.
Good question. Coils have a connection to the control box that is specific to the make of the detector (Minelab, Garrett, etc). Most often these coils are detector specific.
Thank you for an honest video. That other video is like so many schlocky sales video selling poor products with false or exaggerated claims. Here is hoping people will listen to your advice and the advice of other qualified persons/dealers before shelling out hard earned money!
Thank you Susan! I have no doubt that it was well intended but it was so wrong!!!!! And its not even a difference of opinion thing. It is a capacity thing. The Simplex runs circles around the Ace and nowadays it can be bought for 212 dollars. The Simplex is 250 for a detector that is tuned for 2022 instead of 2012.
@@MetalDetectingNYC yeah misinformation is a common thing in our world today unfortunately. Thanks for your videos and your honesty and knowledge man it’s appreciated 👍
I also had an Ace 250 early on and they do have their place. It is a great detector and paid for itself, however keep it away from wet salt sand and and salt water.
Agreed, but the question I have is, in the age of the Equinox and other extremely formidable detectors, is there still a place for the Ace? If im not mistaken it came out in 2008. It is still getting sold new.
@@MetalDetectingNYC Well, probably not. If someone new is getting into the hobby and could score a good used one at a decent price, then that would be it's place.
I also started with the Garrett Ace 250 and didn't have much luck with it. No one there to show me how the thing worked. So it sat in the garage for 4 - 5 years. I decided to try again and I found some tokens from long ago and picked up the interest. I sold those tokens and bought the Nokta Makro Simplex+. Awesome machine. I just have to LEARN how to use it for best performance.
I’m going back and forth between getting the Simplex and spending quite a bit more and getting a Garrett AT Pro. I’ve got a Fisher f44 right now. I detect mostly old home sites and fields. What would you recommend?
I have 2 Nox 800s and it is a killer on the beach. I use the Coiltek 9.5x5 in tight spots and bigger coils for more depth. I have seen good reports about the Vanquish detectors but not tried them. I really would like to see the Deus 2 given a real thorough test on the beaches though. And the Legend. But the Deus 2 is very expensive in the UK. I designed a land and beach detector in the early 70s and it was probably the best in its day. My business plans got crushed by the 70s oil crisis. I am working on a much upgraded Mark 2, 46 years later. Should be a killer in the wet sand and difficult soil. 👍🏻
WOW! That is a lifetime goal for me! The fact that you got so far with it is extremely impressive in itself! Ive heard great things about the pulse Mark 2.
@@MetalDetectingNYC Yep I spent 5 Years in R&D and 5 years at college and built many types of detector at a time when there were none that worked on the beach. All mine were beach and land and rejected thin silver foil which was all over the place in those days. Found a few rings too. But I spent years working on the project only to be hit hard by that oil crisis which lasted years. It will be fun building the next one. I also sent one of the first detectors out to Australia for gold hunting. In those days they did not make detectors down under. I would love to see you test a D2 on the beach. 👍🏻
So. I'm out detecting with Garrett ATX PI machine all day. Now my rechargeable batteries are starting to go flat. I've got five hours of sunlit left. Not really enough time for a recharge. So it out with those batteries and in with some AA Alkilines and I keep on detecting. I've got a Gta X500 garrett which over 45 years old. It's a coin monster and will bust its balls with any new techo machine out there. As for the ACE 250. Yes. It's a beginners machine. Yes it does find metal under water but not a salt water machine.
Equinox Rings up bottle caps at at 12 which is gold signal, bottle cap with a Garrett is in the 80s gold rings up around 51 to 55 I found a lot more rings with the Garrett Max but I did find a awesome gold chain with my Equinox not too long ago
Thankyou....you saved me from a mistake I am new and seen the video almost fell for it. Although I probably will get the vanquish 440 looks even simpler to operate
You will not go wrong with a vanquish especially if you were doing mostly beach Metal Detecting. I like the simplex a little more on land but I could have specified about the beach.
Well I started with an Ace 250 and lost interest very quickly. Just wasn’t what I pictured it to be. Then a few years later I bought a Garrett AT Pro and began to really enjoy detecting. After a few months I was so hooked I bought an Equinox 800. That was a little over two years ago. I love my NOX and use to AT Pro once in a while especially in the woods.
Yes it definitely would! But overall I would rather have the simplex. The lower versions of the vanquish are so stripped down. I own the Vanquish 540 but that is in a different price range than the simplex.
Lol I couldn’t agree more. The Simplex+ is definitely the best gateway detector. It was our first metal detector and we found plenty of good stuff with it. Depending on how much you go, it could potentially pay for itself within the first year. 🤙
Absolutely! Gateway detector is the best way to put it. I would estimate it is 80% of a Nox and that is amazing......but I want the best when I swing! But penny for penny....I always recommend the simplex for brand new detectorists.
Getting closer to retirement and wanting a new hobby besides angling I wasted money on the Ommo Detector a couple of years ago and now your vids popped up on my feed, now I can start learning as you really know your stuff. I'm a cheapskate but that's not always a good thing. I'm glad I decided to watch your vids and have been playing catch up on them for about a week now. Thanx.
I have never swung the 1266x to be honest. In ease of use the Vanquish might have one up on the simplex plus it is a SMF simultaneous multi frequency. I own the 540 which could get for less than 400 dollars. There are actually 3 versions of the vanquish and less features with each level down. But the SMF is there and it is very much plug and play.
I hamagineve been metal detecting since 1966. Iam 71 years old now and you can imagine the changes In the mahines I have used. The best budget detectors I have are made by Quest . They are the X5 148,00 X10 199,00 and Q30 ae 299,,00,
I been detecting 6 months. I have a simplex. I plan to get a legend. Maybe... My problem is I need a second machine for a friend. Should I get another simplex or try a vanquish 540 as my 2nd machine. Third option is sit on my hands and wait for the legend... Will probably get a higher end machine by summer no matter what I do. Suggestions...
I own both the Simplex and the Vanquish. I would rather run a simultaneous multi frequency detector but the Vanquish is NOT the Equinox. For the price difference between the 540 and the Equinox, I would literally dig up coins. Im dead serious. I bought a Legend and im waiting for it to be delivered. Hopefully I can tell you if its close to a nox.
Since I got my vanquish 340 (I'm a beginner) my first week I found a gold bracelet and silver ring. I've also got around $20 in change. It's already paid for itself in the few weeks I've had it. I plan on upgrading to the nox but first I want to keep using the vanquish for at least 6 months. I've been doing both parks and beaches. I do dig alot of 15-16s on the tdi which ends up being bottle caps but I'm learning how to skip them. Also love this channel I've been learning a lot here to.
@@MetalDetectingNYC felt like my first day was a bust, only found bottle caps and pull tabs, my 2nd day was crazy I walked around a tree and found the ring, started walking the the middle of the baseball field and just for fun while walking towards the bleachers i gave it a few swings and hit the gold bracelet. Since I work during the days I've been going out each night for 2-3 hours going through parks. I've got alot better at finding coins but no more jewelry. I'm trying to learn to "pick" better targets so I end up with less trash. Maybe you can give me a tip on this, since I have the 340 I only have coin, relic, all metal modes. I'm using coin mode, Ill find a target with a good tone tdi at like 15 then switch from coin to all metal. if I turn get a negative tdi should I skip? I know everyone says dig it all but if I can avoid bottle caps and pull tabs I'd be very happy.
I think the simplex+ is way better then the ace 250, for the price it can go 10ft or 3 meters under water. Been swinging it for a year. But I would recommend trying one
Yes. The only exception would be if they were iron. All machines have basic modes that block out iron. There is another mode called all metal where you will be able to hear iron.
I only have 8 detectors so I am a bit behind you. I do love the deus 2 and looking forward to the legend which I have ordered. I also agree with you that the simplex is still the best for the money
I agree 100%. Most of those detectors are in the toy department. I see them in souvenir stores near the beach for people who lost a ring in dry sand. I agree that someone wanting to honestly get into metal detecting get a simplex or save up for a Legend for around $500. I have the Nox 800 and Garret AT pro and XP Deus 1. I’m getting the XPDeus 2 very shortly. I got my first detector for my birthday when I was 14 I think it cost $28. 1976. It had an on off vol knob and that was it. 4” was deep. So I understand someone who is a complete novice thinking a $250!! Detector was top of the line.
@@phackqu the Nokta legend and equinox do have a gold mode. I suspect that medium nuggets and up would be no problem. The pro line for that hobby starts at the GPX 6000. I’m in New York and we have very little natural gold in rocks so I have limited experience with that.
@@MetalDetectingNYC I'm in california and know there's gold in them mountains but don't want to go 6hrs round trip for fines. Thanks for the experienced response.
Own the Simplex and Nox 600. The nox beats the simplex in a lot of ways but for the price I would highly recommend the Simplex. It is a great machine. My beaches here in Erie, Pa. are non salt water. I find the Simplex does a lot better in Park 1 mode than beach mode. I also use that setting with the nox
Yep absolutely... I ground balance in Beach mode and then switch over to Park 1 but never detect in Beach mode. If there's too much chatter I'll then manually ground balance and am good to go. One of my favorite detectors for sure.
One thing I wish I mentioned (I didnt want to confuse people) is that if you are beach specific, take one of the lower Vanquish models. I own the 540 and I think the features on the simplex are superior (this is especially true over the lower models) but the beach detecting capability is not.
They went out of business as I’m sure you know. My question would be what if your detector breaks? Even if Garrett takes care of you departs might no longer exist. I think that they made groundbreaking machines at one time but there are far better options on the market right now.
Merrill, thank you for making this great video. You nailed it. I got a Vanquish 440, it works great. Eventually, i will build one to the specs i need. But I will always keep my Vanquish 440

Close enough has a lot same benefits I have had other machine that cost more Not as good
Except that one is $340.

If ur budget was unlimited what detector is the BEST for each of the following?
1* depth on land
2*underwater/snorkeling deep
3*water proof/knee deep
4*mud/wet sand
5*dry land/dry sand
6*fully submergable pinpointer
Also what is the top tech not available to us yet? ie Do you know if any exist with a screen to show an approximate shape of the metal detected yet?

Don't know how I missed this video, it's spot on. I started with an Ace 300, struggled for a year and almost gave up on detecting. Instead I got a Simplex and everything turned around. Absolutely no question that it's the best value on the market, though some people seem to struggle with the definition of "value".
Ace400i, 4years detecting, 2years of wanting to upgrade but had to prioritice my money somewhere else. It is just so inconcistent machine overall. Byt garrett makes themself SO visible that it is an easy go to option for someone who is just getting started and does not know what they want!
Ditto-- I sold that 300 within a week of getting my Simplex +
Thank you so much William!
I always appreciate a no BS, no holds bared straight to the point video on any subject. Im subscribing. Rock on Bro.
A belated thank you!
The Ace 250 is a museum relic now lol
The simplex is the better budget detector it's way better and waterproof
Yeah, I’ve never had a problem with mine and I’ve found lots of stuff over 20 years with it, in every type of terrain
@@dirtfishingnewfoundland4353 probably is, but I wasn't passing up on a used once Ace with $50 scoop and headphones 🎧 for only $120 . . .

@@MetalDetectingNYC Great. Thank you for responding. I am fired up to go find some treasure !
I just bought a bounty Hunter pro. You are starting to make me feel bad. You are right about false signals on wet beach sand. How do i fix this problem. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks
Thanks. I searched best $300 Metal detector. Glad I came here . Thanks again. Just starting so I appreciate your knowledge
Thanks Mark!
Thanks SO much for an honest review!! The analogy about if you wanted to start fishing then you go and see the fisherman just makes sense. I just got a metal detector for Christmas and now it's going back and exchanged for the one you recommended!
I used the ace 350 for about 5 years and it was the best machine I ever had nothing compares to it for durability and deep targets
Nice information❤
When collapsed the nokta fits into a laundry bag.....nice for travel and such
Yes, they planned for everything! Very impressed with Nokta as a company and cant wait to get my Legend this month (hopefully).
@@MetalDetectingNYC I was wondering that the 18th machine would be...can't wait for that video
I own all three ACE coils and it does great...It is simple turn and go machine LOVE IT!...It is My first detector and still own it and use it.
Here’s a link a to a used Nox 600 with good waterproof headphones for $400!
facebook.com/groups/usedmetaldetectors4sale/permalink/1934480663412952/?sale_post_id=1934480663412952
Now, for the money the Vanquish 340 at $200 would make a fantastic beach machine in wet saltwater sand because their will be hardly any iron at the beach and the targets will be spread out.
Take Care

With use any detector will pay for itself. There is so much that is dropped; it is mind boggling!
Another happy Simplex+ owner here. I bought it in 2020 and it paid for itself in the first 12 months. I also have a Minelab Vanquish 440, and I would pick the Simplex if I could only have one. Thanks for all the videos, Merrill!
Thank you Mupples! I do love that Vanquish too and I might choose that one over the Simplex on a saltwater beach.
You're right about that... the Simplex doesn't do well at all near saltwater. I still take it when I go to the beach so I can hunt the dry sand with that big coil.
I have 800 i love it.Enjoyed your video and good Luck
Thanks Jimmy! If I could do it over again, I would get the 800 but no complaints about the 600!
I agree and I also have a Nokta Makro Simplex along with an Equinox 800.
Yes! I would say its 80% an equinox....what do you think?
@@MetalDetectingNYC Yes, I mostly use it in fresh water lakes because I didn't want to drown my Equinox. It sorta became the sacrificial lamb so to speak.
Totally agree, I had the Ace 250 and after just two hunts, I sold it, would not work in highly mineralized ground kept ghosting , dug dozens of holes, nothing!
It has been usurped!
Thanks.
Fair enough! That is a great start Bob.
Ace 250 can be used in shoreline. Ive found the green blue dimes ten inches down. Mineralized soil makes it run funny but after using some time you can find targets. Recharge AA batteries work great in detector.
You can also drink water with a fork, it’s just not very efficient…
I wholeheartedly agree! Ive tried 18 detectors so far. Minelab Equinox is best.....Simplex is best value! Curious what Legend and Deus 2 bring.
I have the Garrett Ace 350 never an issue. It has always done a great job with discriminations. I do not appreciate anybody putting down the Garrett.
I’m moving to the mountains so I’m searching for the best detector for lakes and rivers. I’m so glad I found you I went back and deleted the other videos.
I started with a 202 bounty hunter then garrett ACE 400 and now Minelab Equinox 900 very happy so far !
What’s the best for its money in 2024
Merrill, I wish I had watched this before I bought a detector. I did buy a Minelab Vanquish 440 which seems to work very well at the beach. The Simplex does have some features I wish the Vanquish had like a water proof control unit and the light. Anyway, thanks for the great info.
I love honesty about detectors from hard core detectorist thank you 😊
Yes that was my absolute honest opinion. I believe the Simplex is about 80 Percent of an Equinox. But it is a third of the price. That is value.
Agree 100%. The build quality is far better than a very popular detector that is now priced at $1000.
And what is detector number 18?
Jay I just saw your email....will respond
@@MetalDetectingNYC oh thats so true
thanks for pointing out an issue that applies to every product anyone that watches youtube videos to find the best of anything needs to realize.
Agreed wholeheartedly!
Love the fact that you have 18 metal detectors... awesome.
Years ago i bought an Ace 250 as starting detector and after only using it for 2 months i already knew this is not the one. Then bought a second hand Teknetics Omega 8000 and my finds just tripled.
Yes, you know right away after using it.
Just bought a Vanquish 440. Hope it goes well
Your next video needs to be on “why I need a pin pointer” specifically the Garrett Carrot.
Ace 250 discontinued but it got me a bunch of gold on land and dry sand.
I would buy a vanquish if starting today.
Is it discontinued? I see new ones being sold
The Simplex+ is an excellent metal detector. You are absolutely right about the Simplex+
Can you put different bottoms of different types on your metal detector like say a 6in up to a 12in . Bottom disc different brands to
Good question. Coils have a connection to the control box that is specific to the make of the detector (Minelab, Garrett, etc). Most often these coils are detector specific.
Think you very much I didn't know that I am thinking of getting one and I know nothing about it.
Your a good teacher as usual
Thank you! I wasnt planning on making a video today, but after I saw the misinformation, I was inspired to share my honest thoughts
@@MetalDetectingNYC yeah misinformation is a common thing in our world today unfortunately. Thanks for your videos and your honesty and knowledge man it’s appreciated 👍
I chose a Simplex as my first. I love it. I want to try the smaller coil. I've only hunted mostly trashy places so far...
It is still getting sold new.
for the same price.....and for the same price as a simplex
I love my ace300 with cors 12 x 13 coil.. but i do wish it was waterproof and rechargeable...
I agree with you. You never see anything from the Ace series anymore and I have heard good things about the Simplex!
I actually liked the Ace Apex at the beach. Bloody horrible in dirt though (at least in high trash conditions) !
I love your animated reactions!!!! Had me laughing during the entire video!!!! Great Job!!!!
Make sure you tape up the wire near the transducer. Once I did this, most false readings were gone.
Great video! What's your recommendation for a great value pinpointer?
I haven’t dug as deep with pinpointers to be honest. I have a Garrett carrot. It has served me well for many years
i have the ace 400i, does this also not work on wet sand? Is it a matter of switching the coil or do i need a whole nother detector?
Thank you su much Merrill... I prefer your way to recommend a metal detector, no BS. You're clearly the best.
Honored Cyril!
Equinox Rings up bottle caps at at 12 which is gold signal, bottle cap with a Garrett is in the 80s gold rings up around 51 to 55 I found a lot more rings with the Garrett Max but I did find a awesome gold chain with my Equinox not too long ago
I use the quest x5 and it's 160$ and it does a fantastic job! I love it!
And it's rechargeable too! Which saves alot of money! Try the quest x5! You will like it!
OK well that is one that I will have to take a look at.
So glad I found this video as I try to research buying my very 1st metal detector. Thanks.
I hear you Mike. I was inspired to make this video when I still see the Ace 250 being recommended for first time users.
Mike, congrats on giving the hobby a 2nd try with the AT Pro, and later, the Nox!

Wouldn't vanquish be better considering beaches?
Yes it definitely would! But overall I would rather have the simplex. The lower versions of the vanquish are so stripped down. I own the Vanquish 540 but that is in a different price range than the simplex.
Great job bro. Funny and educational.
Thank you!
It's very tactical 😜
I found a gold child ring second day with simplex. Paid for itself literally 9 hours later. It was an eye opener
@@midnightcoil congratulations, that’s awesome! I don’t know about you but we were seriously hooked after our first ring find.
Thanx.
Good Morning
You have a nice job.
The NOKTA DETECTION TECHNOLOGIES Simplex Lite is a good choice for a beginner's detector.
Thank you
whats equivalent to the fisher 1266x for ease of operation and quality ?
I have never swung the 1266x to be honest. In ease of use the Vanquish might have one up on the simplex plus it is a SMF simultaneous multi frequency. I own the 540 which could get for less than 400 dollars. There are actually 3 versions of the vanquish and less features with each level down. But the SMF is there and it is very much plug and play.
@@MetalDetectingNYC thanks , appreciate it !
I hope the legend plays out and soon! I check daily for updates. Btw love the channel. You have taught me so much.
I own a Gerritt , and it has trouble with separation . and hard on battery's.
Garrett needs to reinvent itself. It’s in trouble.
That is a HECK of a start! Congratulations and thank you for the kind words!
Agreed! Im mind blown when I compare the price for a new Ace 250 with a Simplex
Now the deus 2 from what I'm hearing from the big dogs, it's reading dimes at 16 inchs. Crazy ass depth, and great in iron patches
So I need one to find my arrows in a mown pasture I'm assuming any of these budget units will work??
Yes. The only exception would be if they were iron. All machines have basic modes that block out iron. There is another mode called all metal where you will be able to hear iron.
@@MetalDetectingNYC awesome thanks.
the music on this video really sets the tone. well done sir
I only have 8 detectors so I am a bit behind you. I do love the deus 2 and looking forward to the legend which I have ordered. I also agree with you that the simplex is still the best for the money
Only 8 😂
Awesome video man! I've saw videos like this and they bother me sooo bad!
Thanks for opening my eyes. I have $500 to spend. Which one would you suggest? Thanks!
Depends on where you dig? Saltwater beaches? Land? My website will help. Iratemetaldetectors.com
What’s a good metal detector for beginners
LISTEN to what NYC's video says. Use Your ears.
Great video. Which detector is best for detecting gold in any terrain 500$ or less?
Placer gold or finding jewelry? I would go Nokta Legend at 635 if it’s jewelry. To find placer or hard rock gold, you need a specialized machine.
@@MetalDetectingNYC Placer raw ore
I find the Simplex does a lot better in Park 1 mode
than beach mode.
Best value out there
What do you think about WHITE'S METAL DETECTOR I have been thinking about one of there products?
They went out of business as I’m sure you know. My question would be what if your detector breaks? Even if Garrett takes care of you departs might no longer exist. I think that they made groundbreaking machines at one time but there are far better options on the market right now.
How do you like the Mimelab vanquish 540 n the Legend?
My full response is here : www.iratemetaldetectors.com/
Merrill, thank you for making this great video. You nailed it. I got a Vanquish 440, it works great. Eventually, i will build one to the specs i need. But I will always keep my Vanquish 440
Great video, I’m s as newbi and already learnt Ace 250 hates wet sand! Loved your video thanks for sharing your knowledge
