This joint has an interesting story they didn't mention, his family owns some high end steakhouses that are very well known in the area. He wanted to open a pizza joint and the rest of the family wouldn't get on board so the "Stubborn Brother" went out on his own and did it. I was waiting for this review when I saw he went there on Twitter, I knew it would be an 8 plus. Its good pizza and definitely Dave's style.

I am so admiring o this owner -- he put in *SO MUCH* work into that establishment. I know what goes into opening a business...even the menu signs inside were extremely well done. Wish they had talked more. Love that he praised the chef as well! GREAT guy!

Skip the pizza and go for some of the better restaurants instead: souk, element 112, plat8, benchmark, brimhouse. Corktown Detroit has way better pizza than the 419.

Owner is an absolute legend. Bet the employee turnover there is practically non-existent.
That’s right. More owners should learn from this guy. When you give credit to employees that work for you and take the focus off of yourself, workers feel empowered and are very loyal because of it.

Just tried for the first time. Great crust, no flop, clean tomato flavor, no grease, awesome cheese. So glad I went.

Anything "a Mancy" touches in Toledo, Ohio turns to gold! Years ago, Mancy's Original Steakhouse, on Phillips Ave., in Toledo, was featured on the cover of Esquire Magazine as having the best steak in Toledo. It still is today. You can see the framed print of the magazine cover hanging in their foyer still today. The first restaurant had a huge destructive fire years ago...I rode my bike there to watch it burn from a small distance amidst all the fire trucks and fire hoses. Total disaster. It is said all that was saved was the life-sized wooden clown which greets you upon entering the famous restaurant which was rebuilt on the lot right next to The Original, still on Phillips Avenue. Mancy's Ideal is Toledo's best restaurant even still today. If you have guests coming into town, you take them to Mancy's. The original owner came here from Greece and you later could see the 'ol' guy planting red Cana Lillys along the front of his restaurant near the street and at Christmas time green garland was draped along the brick wall adorned with the wrought iron old fashioned street lamps.....still today it brings back sweet memories. Mr. Mancy left to his rich legacy his two sons, who their sons have carried on a beautiful, successful tradition. So successful that they operate Mancy's Italian Restaurant, Smokey Bones BBQ, Bluewater Grille....and, and, and. The Mancy family is synonymous with Toledo Tradition. I always order their massive king crab legs. On one occasion they did not have them. I was told they refused to serve them because they were not big enough for them to serve! Every time since then they are nearly a foot long each and with them wrapped in white linen hanging off of the ends of the huge oval plate, hot butter awaits for dipping, savoring every delectable bite. If you have not been to Mancy's Ideal Restaurant on Phillips Avenue in Toledo, Ohio - run, don't walk.

As much as I hate Toledo, I am a proud native sometimes. Seeing this makes me have joy, living here my whole life. A simple video but knowing we can still get recognition for what we have is awesome. I've heard about this pizza but I really wanna try it now.
Soon as the box opened I was a little speechless myself. Looked like quintessential NY pizza. Just enough crisp, well cooked undercarriage, sauce/cheese ratio looked on point for NY style... who would've guessed you'd find that in Toledo of all places. Then the guy has some fucking sciencey jig-a-ma-whuts-it water filter on display so everyone can see it, and it literally says Property of New York on it lmao. That shows dedication right there.
As a New Yorker, I've never bought into the water argument, because you can talk to guys running bagel and pizza shops down here and they laugh at the whole "it's the water" stuff. And I tend to believe them because there's plenty of places in NY with NY water that make shitty pizza and shitty bagels lol... just like with everywhere else. The dough recipe, ingredients and ovens play the biggest role. But hey, if it works for these guys, more power to em.

You'll be surprised. Toledo pizza rivals some of the best pizza staples in the country. Marco's pizza, which has numerous locations across the US is headquartered here.... One in particular is located in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Most campus pizza ranges from 2 - 5. 5 being the very rare exception. I heard the crunch. I knew this was already in the 7's. The fact it got an 8 is HUGE. I guess there's one good thing in Toledo...the pizza. Dave single-handedly saving Toledo from obscurity over here.

I def agree some of the best in town overall, I don't think the crust is quite "NY Style" as it's a bit too bready but still really good and a bit unique. I need to try their plain cheese, I've only ever had their specialties.
