So maybe it’s just dif taste buds but I’ve seen reviews from multiple people about this place…some say it’s really really good some say it’s just decent pizza but nothing special…heard it’s gotten inconsistent…idk
I'm from Ct. and I've had excellent apizza all over the northeast and in Italy when I lived in Florence for a while, but there is just something about a New Haven pie done right that's just incredible.
dear that is GRAGNANO PIZZA STYLE : from where our compatriots came ...... and extended in some part of Italy : Legion Calabria, Lazio and Tuscany ... ;)
Im from Manchester in the UK, but I remember going to Sally's Apizza after stopping in New Haven for a couple of days about 15 years ago on my way from New York to Boston. I will never have a better pizza anywhere in my life again, I know that for sure! Dominos can burn in hell for eternity after trying New Haven's pizzas!
Domino's? If Domino's is the comparison, New Haven can't be that good lol I would hope New Haven Pizza would blow Domino's out of the water. So does New York, Chicago, Napoli etc. lol
Dude. That's the best pizza review I've ever seen, you captured everything perfectly. I've been going to Sally's for 50 years, and have always felt that they are the pinnacle of the "holy trinity" of NH pizza. You nailed it when you took the first bite of the pie without the cheese and recognized that it was better than the one with cheese. Only the best of the best can pull that off, there is literally nowhere to hide with a pie like that. You understood that it's simple, but not so "simple". There is a magic to it that only Sally's has. I could tell that you recognized it by the look on your face when you dug in. You knew in that moment that pizza, or maybe even food, doesn't get any better. There is something "transcendent" about their pizza that makes everything else pale in comparison. The only negative is that they set the bar so high that it ruins eating pizza in other places. As you mentioned, the "wheels of sadness" get even "sadder" after experiencing Sallys. Thanks for the interview, that was great and heartfelt.
I've never had New Haven pizza but want to try to make it in my Ooni. I understand it's a 70% hydration roughly. What makes the toppings unique? I hear the tomato pie is just tomato sauce, oregano, olive oil, garlic and pecorino Romano? Are the clam pies with mozzarella or pecorino Romano and olive oil and garlic and clams?
Wonderful comment! Describes Sally's perfectly! I'm a lifelong CT resident and just picked up a couple pies this morning and felt like watching Sally's while eating Sally's ! God bless you my friend!
Had the pleasure of working with Ray at Sally’s. He is the man. He’s worked at Sally’s for many years and has stories for days. He also makes a fantastic pie 😋
Life long Connecticut resident here. Searched up sallys reviews to watch videos while i eat the sallys apizza i picked up an hour ago!!! Sally's is the best pizza on the planet!!!! I definitely think out of all the apizza greats, Sally's is the GOAT! It's the amazing sauce, the fresh mozz, but what separates sallys is the charred, crispy yet chewy at the same time crust. Its unmatched

As a New Yorker, my first reaction to this review once I found out it was his first to try in New Haven was: "Oh no! He's started with the very best place!" I'll always love New York pizzas, but Sally's unequivocally is the best pizza I've ever had. He nailed it. Awesome review! The chew difference is from the hard spring wheat. The guys coming over from Naples had different ingredients to go with the recipes they knew. So many places in the northeast with roots from Italian immigrants from Naples and Sicily are still standing strong. Hydration is higher than home by an extra 10-15% too. Appreciate the review.
