When I saw Part 1 of 4 I thought: “I’ll never get through them it will take hours.” But now I wish there was more!! Can’t get enough of Steve Martin! 🤣🥰💞
Thanks for all the Dave! Born in '70 I grew up on Letterman and Steve too, my dad had 'Let's Get Small' and 'Wild and Crazy Guy' and got me 'Comedy is Not Pretty' one Xmas and got myself 'Steve Martin Brothers' around '84 so they've been ingrained for decades. Cheers!!
"Now I'm gonna flag the card. This is called 'flagging it'..."
Been looking YEARS for this! Thanks, Don!
Im 24 but I've always loved classic late night because of watching old Carson VHS. I knew Steve Martin fron movies when i was a kid and the highlights on Carson and he appearances on Conan. But this is the first time i had sat down and watched a big chuck of his stuff. Holy cow!!!! He is one of the funniest men of all time. Literally keeps you off gaurd the whole time you never know whats a joke and whats not until the punch line knocks you dead. Seriously what a great.
This is like watching one two-hour David Letterman show built around the concept gag of having Steve Martin pop in again and again in the same show, wearing different sets of clothing and pretending to be taped on several different occasions.
I really hope we get to keep Steve on this planet for a while still. We lost too many gems recently (Betty, Norm, Bob)
And now Louie and Gilbert.
Steve Martin has been 70 for like 30 years
Hair just greyed at a young age. I know a lot of people that started to grey in their early 20's
He was grey before his wife was born
😂😂😂😂😂
@@GR_BackingTracks😂😂😂😂😂
I don't know if these are his gimmicks or late nights but they are the funniest bits I have ever seen of martin. Who cares about interviews and movies. What fun! Thanks utube.
Oh my ... this'll be great!!!
As always, your work is much appreciated, Don.
Well, I´ve just changed my plans for the next two hours. Finally the collection I´ve really been waiting for for so long, thanks so much!
Now we're talking. You're the man, don.
Steve Martin is a true American treasure...a true Renaissance man. Artist, Musician, Actor, Comedian, songwriter...no one has done it better, and for quite as long.
Great Video..👍 ..Thank you For Sharing it..👍
The work you are doing with these compilations is absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much!
I haven't seen too much of Dave's ill-fated morning show. It was awesome to see that first clip.
We owe you a lot for doing such a good deed
What a treat to arrive on my birthday! Thanks Don!
Happy Canada day! 🍁 🇨🇦 🦫
Steve Martin was once THIS huge: Little Earl from "What's Happening !!" once imitated him on said show....
🚬😎
What a treat! Thanks again for more amazing compilations.
Oh thank goodness. Thought this was an In Memoriam piece at first.
Here we go! Thanks for the compilations.
What a find! Ty for putting this together!
I appreciate this more than you will ever know!
Thanks Don for another great compilation.
Thank you for the wonderful collections Mr. Giller. They demonstrate to me that I actually did like teleivsion at one time. They also made me laugh just as much now as they did the first time. Of course some of them were first time for me and that was something that would have been a shame to have not ever seen. I sincerely thank you sir!
Outstanding Don, fantastic entertainment as usual, thank you.
You have no idea how happy this makes me.....and how much this scared me.
I assume this is because of Steve's upcoming Netflix show.
Coincidental. I wasn’t even aware of his Netflix project.
Actually It’s a Hulu/Disney+ show
Thank you for these, Don! Cheers!
Two comic gods.
Michael Gary Scott passed out when he got this notification.
Am I the only one who had a minor heart attack when seeing the notification of this video because they thought Steve Martin passed away?
Absolutely.
I may have or may have not done a quick Google search before watching this video.
@@InjuredRobot. I did as well, and again a few minutes later just to be absolutely sure.
He’s alright
If you wait long enough...
I love the Steve Martin on letterman
that pencil bit was brilliant
For me personally he's no Norm Macdonald, and I dont laugh at him too often on these talk shows, but either way the originality I loved back then and he seems like a good dude. You never knew what was gonna happen on those old talk shows, even if it was scripted it still could go in multiple different directions. Everything's just so stale and boring now. It's all about the the ora around the celebrity and just relying on that, rather than them trying to be genuinely funny or entertaining and Martin certainly gave it his all.
Not to mention it's all just classed based now. Talk shows used to seem like they were meant for people at home to be able to come home after a long day and relate to or get enjoyment from in some way. Now it's all in giant expensive studios completely separating the show from any kind of connection to it's audience.
I didn't see the "Commercial" show, but that Butter clip was classic.
Love it!
Can't wait to go through these!
He's killing me !!!
wow, I see this and I immediately check to make sure he didn't die.
"What kind of Tang?" "Poon."
steve's early comic persona was so believable. For years I genuinely thought he had a screw loose
The power of stand-ups who can also act.
Man, some of those tennis balls were coming in hot. The first one went flying by, and I'm thinking, "These guys are in for a bad time!"
omg this is incredible.
9:05 The throw-away-the-questions bit, years before Craig Ferguson.
Steve always comes prepared.
Steve Martin a naturally funny person. That party he threw in Dave's office was pure comedy
Yes...thx
Steve Martin was extremely funny in his Planes, Trains & Automobiles appearance on Late Night! How to spot gambling cheats segment was genius! Both Letterman & Martin seemed to be having quite a lot of fun together that night. I saw Planes, Trains 10+ times during that winter of '87 & upon my return visits almost felt like Martin when I'd be anticipating a scene & waiting for the crowd to burst out with laughter! And inside I'd be thinking "I'm here!". PS NBC's Late Night with David Letterman destroys Late Show on CBS, and seemed to lack the spontanaeity his original NBC run carried. And the fun side segments brought a touch of innovation & kooky strangeness which was wonderful! I think Dave became even saltier on CBS & certainly felt like he had arrived. Once that takes place the magic is gone!
17:54 He did (a less obvious version of) this piece on Carson a couple of years before. Before Don Giller and UA-cam...
A wild and crazy guy.
Oh lol, so funny LOVE him
I remember the bit from one of his shows that he did with Dick Van Dyke.
Can’t wait to dig into this.
Am I crazy or did you have a Super Dave compilation? I swear I watched one, but couldn’t find it again.
I did but removed it. Will at some point re-up.
@@dongiller Great, thank you!
Don, would you ever consider doing an interview or behind the scenes kind of video about you / your channel? I can’t be the only one wondering about the mystery man behind this channel and what is your history with the show / are you the greatest NBC dumpster diver in history / what is the deal exactly? On a scale of 1-100 this channel is like 91+ and I waste wayyy today much time thinking about UA-cam.
I’d be a horrible interviewer. Of all the interviews taped for CNN’s “History of Late Night” series, I’m pretty sure that mine was the only one to get completely dumped.
And only 91%? :)
@@dongiller So I need to find CNN’s equivalent of Don Giller who has the original tapes somewhere? Like the old Zen koan, it’s Don Gillers all the way down. 😅
Stay tuned… :)
I've always loved that clip were Steve and Dave say goodbye to each other. In fact, I have a clip of that clip. Scroll upwards and you can see it.
See the bonus clip at the end of Part 4.
Dana Carvey is such a great drummer
And who would think that Steve now has a Masterclass… 15:05
Can’t wait for Steve and Dave’s Gay Vacation.
That’s already up as a separate video - ua-cam.com/video/Oda1BYGAbrs/v-deo.html
@@dongiller you are the anti-Don Olmeyer. I mean it when I say that as far as spreading and preserving the legacy of his work Dave owes you big time. You’re not getting hit with takedowns so that’s good. Told you this before but just top-notch archival work with your channel. 👌
Re takedowns: Never say never. I’ve been hit in the past - I even lost the channel in 2019, then, thanks to the great folks at Carson Entertainment Group, I got it back - and no doubt I’ll be hit again. Heck, we’ll see if all of the forthcoming music performances in Parts 2 to 4 go through without a hitch.
I’ll always be beholden to any content owner who chooses to take videos down rather than monetizing them. It’s completely out of my hands.
But thanks!
@@dongiller Yikes I wasn’t aware of that. I better quiet down before I jinx it. Thanks for the reply
41:00 this was really good.
Dave's from Indiana, right?
I remember Steve insulting Terre Haute around 1980
I dunno if anybody is still skimming these comments but at 5:55 a song is played for an ad break and I just cannot seem to figure out what it is from
Rod Stewart - “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” (1978). Original recording here here - ua-cam.com/video/Hphwfq1wLJs/v-deo.html
@@dongiller Literal saviour, thank you
God he’s brilliant 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
“Let’s see YOU try to be funny!”
@ 51:08 after saying Rome, he says another name of the city (?) that sounds like "Sketters" - does anyone know what he was saying here (the closed captions didn't even print a word because it didn't understand it either).
“We were in Rome, and together…”
@@dongiller LOL!! OK, thanks, Don!
8:57 'Where do you get your ideas from?' 🤔🤔
Lol! This is exactly what I was going to type.
Yes, me too run out of Norm stuff
29:30 this is my favorite appearence
"Comedy is the ability to make people laugh without making them puke." I think Monty Python disagrees most vehemently.
Don why am I seeing wordwide pants overlaid again? It went away for a while. But now it’s back!
Depends on the source. Can’t be avoided - it’s either that or no video.
I wonder if David ever got rid of that picture of the dog over his left shoulder. It's kind of distracting.
If Dave's show didn't start until 2-1-1982, what are these episodes dated 1980??
That was his morning show. It lasted for 18 weeks, from June until October that year.
@@dongiller thank you, sir.
i was able to attend a taping back in 1983 (i think) and it was not one of the better shows... guests were art buchwald and roberta flack w/peabo bryson (sang "tonight i celebrate my love for you")... why couldn't it be steve martin or howard, or a million other BETTER guests?? oh well, i got to see dave.
@@arlo2203 November 14, 1983. Actually, that was Dennis Collins singing with Roberta.
@@dongiller how do you know that?? that is insane that you can reference that.
it was peabo who originally recorded the song with roberta. i would swear on my recently departed sainted mother's grave it was peabo that night! no??
@@arlo2203 Not at all intended to insult your mom (and so sorry on her passing), but it was indeed Dennis Collins who sang with Roberta on the show that night. Dave even introduced him before their performance.
How do I know that? I have that show and every other Late Night with David Letterman.
Who’s at the piano at 3:14? Did Paul have the day off?!
That’s Frank Owens, who was the musical director on Dave’s morning show, which aired for 18 weeks in 1980. Paul wasn’t associated with Dave until two years later on Late. Night.
Different show, different pianist.
@@dongiller Thanks, Don. I remember the morning show (I was in high school), but for some reason I thought Paul had been with Dave from the get-go.
Just found your channel; it’s fantastic. I join so many Letterman fans in extending my thanks to you for taking the time to do this work. Much respect.
Thanks, John!
I'll take the Egg McMigo!
What the heck is this, worldwide pants thing,on the screen?
It’s called a watermark. The options were sharing the video with it, or not sharing it at all.
Notice how all the comedy legends prefer Dave over Jay.
Very funny man but, I must say, I have seen clips of his standup and was not a fan of that
Clips rarely give one a full picture.
I grew up in Germany but I never ever liked, watched or enjoyed German Entertainment.
As a child, I grew up in Iran of the mid 70ies and was surrounded by American culture and music.
I really appreciate your posts. Keep 'em coming.
Thank you Don 😍
