This is an all-new platform with all-new powertrains (pretty much the worse combination for a new car) so I'm not surprised there are drivability quirks. With that said, Mazda is good at improving their vehicles over time, so I'd bet that the 2025 or 2026 CX-90 will be more a refined product.
I like the Muzio family smell test right after your infotainment reviews. My family is pretty sensitive to smells so we've been looking for a 3-row SUV that has the least amount of VOC's. I read that Mazda/Japanese automakers pay attention to that kind of stuff. I know Volvo used to back in the day but I don't think they do anymore. Great overall review of the car too. It's between the CX90 and the Lexus TX coming out this fall for us.
My favorite part was when Evie said it felt like driving a regular 2-row SUV. As someone who hasn't had more than 3 passengers since my oldest got their license almost 20 years ago, I have no use for the third row. I'm VERY interested in the upcoming CX-70 however, and if this feels like a 2 row, I'm hoping *that* one will feel like an even smaller 2 row. Also, inline 6 please. It's what drew me to these new cars, and after several reviews, that PHEV seems like it still needs a lot of work. Also also, that seatbelt chime shouldn't do anything if the vehicle is in park. Fine if it goes nuts as soon as I put it in gear, but if I'm sitting there listening to music with the A/C on while I wait for someone, I don't need to wear a seatbelt.
7 years ago when I rented a BMW X5 it amazed me how much it felt like a slightly larger MINI Cooper (the BMW I could afford and owned at the time) from behind the wheel. Granted Evie has been used to driving a 4-door Bronco lately.. but it is still a huge compliment to Mazda’s suspension gurus. I wonder if Dave Coleman had any input on the CX-90.
I want to trade out our 22 Highlander Platinum for this, but it it has a huge con. Despite being a bigger vehicle than the Highlander, the inside feels small and rear cargo area is 8 cu.ft. smaller with the third row down. A huge negative for trying to convince my wife to go with this instead.
This . Try Acura MDX or new Honda Pilot Elite AWD. The new Honda AWD system drives very well without sacrificing the handling. And you get more space and usable 3rd row seat.
I am actually in the market for this vehicle. Am looking at the preferred plus which has a msrp of around $47,275. The PHEV is too expensive for what it is.

It’s a silly safety feature. Like let me start the car I might need to go grab a thing or just move the car forward for a moment in my driveway, so I need a seatbelt 😅? Lol
@@LafemmebearMusic yes. Legally, anytime you’re moving a motorized vehicle registered to be driven on public roads, you are required to wear a seatbelt. Mazda is not as large a company by far as those two brands you’re referring to. So for me I think a lot of us just didn’t know much about Mazda vehicles simply because of marketing and pure market share.
I tested the CX-90 but the interior was not roomy for my intentions, specifically 3rd row is cramped esp if you try to give 3rd row more legroom the. 2nd row gets cramped as well. how is the drive feeling? I'm scare of Mazda now. I have Cx5 2018, hate it everyday. The drive is not smooth especially when I release gas pedal and it approaches slow speed. It gives me chock feeling.
Would be a great two row car but its disappointing Mazda can't be class competitive on cargo or third row space in a car that has exterior dimensions that are larger than many of its more spacious competitors. I don't understand how Mazda hasn't learned at this point that they won't catch Honda, Toyota, or the Koreans if they can't match them on practicality in classes where practicality is one of the main things buyers want.
Definitely a very likable SUV. However the third row space, the shift refinement and the ride quality are deal breakers… the external, especially the front, is a missed opportunity. It could look more premium/ elegant and more aggressive… the current design is too reserved and that makes it too close to the style of the CX-9…
I fear Mazda is losing its way a bit...should have updated the wonderful CX5 rather than add the faux trail-runner CX50 (with that wheel/tire set?? gimme a break), which is just different enough to be not as good. And CX90 could fill its own non-niche: too $$ for value shoppers but too cheap for premium buyers -- and it comes with shakedown issues in the drivetrain to boot. Also, Mazda seems clueless about hybrid tech. The PHEV version of this gets a whole 25MPG overall...wow
