I mean I always thought it was possible he simply had issues with mental (and obviously his physical) health, in general, as opposed to an actual physical substance, based on what was said by him and others. And also you can interpret Slipknot not responding as respecting Joeys personal privacy or as a sign that they can’t refute it, or don’t care to. Obviously that’s all speculation but still obviously that’s all we can do, but I think you’re right that it’s likely somewhere in the middle, and even if he had trouble with alcohol that doesn’t mean they didn’t kick him out with 1 email and no warning, nor if he didn’t does it mean that he was telling the 100% truth. We don’t know. But I certainly think if it were me I’d feel wrong displaying anything that truly was personally his without asking permission first. That’s what it comes down to for me, and so if Joeys estate does not give permission or his will determines the items go elsewhere? I think they need to give them back

If Slipknot and Joey had parted on good terms or if he had never left the band, the move to display his stuff could be considered a tribute. The fact that they booted him in a fucking email and abandoned him when he was sick makes this a completely heartless, egregious act of exploitation. No question, no gray area.

When you say Joey was a really big part of the band, I really consider him at least 1/4 of Slipknot's value. His style of drumming, his song writing, and all the albums with him on it are FAR superior to all their other albums (yes, even AHIG). In my opinion, the most important members of Slipknot were and still are Joey, Paul, Jim/Mick, and Corey. Everyone else is really pretty expendable. I say this as a HUGE knot fan.

I wonder what the contributions of Joey and Paul were specifically for songwriting compared to Jim and Mick. Obviously the guitarists in the band write the solos, but like, for Duality, who wrote the chorus and who wrote the verses? I have not seen a more detailed analysis of songs like that online.

I agree. Essentially the core of any band. Vocalist, Guitarists, Bass & Drummer. To me Slipknot finished with Joey's death. Even though I did enjoy We Are Not Your Kind, it's not the same band. The End, So Far was virtually unlistenable to me. It was a mess. Not an album I'm going to revisit any time soon. Just call it a day Slipknot. The end is now. Don't tarnish your reputation any more. RIP Paul & Joey. 🖤🙏

@@jules7001 I'm also curious about that but with a band with 9 members maybe they intentionally kept who wrote what somewhat cryptic to benefit the ones that didn't contribute quite as much. That's not to say the contributions don't matter, but when they're more accents and samples and stuff in songs, that's really just icing on cake right?

I mean, they fired Joey through email, now they fired Jay and it doesn't look like they were in good terms. Chris had sued them over money. They fired Joey because he wasnt showing up to write and told management he didnt want to write a new Slipknot album. He wanted to do a second Scar The Martyr album and tour for it. On top of that, he hid his illness. Joey himself said they just assumed he was on drugs as an explanation for his decline in playing. After what happened to Paul, there was no way they'd support that lifestyle on the road. Chris was fired because he sued the band. He wanted more money and thought Clown and Corey were making money on the side, which they werent. He dropped his case with no cost to either party and had his lawyer make the statement saying he hopes to rejoin the band. Total misunderstanding on his part, but the damage was already done. Not much about Jay and Slipknot has been said other than there's no hard feelings and his drum tech saying his firing was a long time coming. And lets be honest, in the studio, Jay never fit the band. They went with him because they were on a time crunch. They didn't even audition anyone else and started writing .5 the next day. Craig most likely left on his own. He just performed with them a couple days before they were playing with a new guy. You dont find a new member and create a new mask in two days. They had to of been given a heads up by Craig. Makes sense. He no longer had obligations to Roadrunner. He's in his 50's and has small children. He doesnt need to tour anymore. He probably chose to be with his family over being on the road all the time. Slipknot didnt do anything wrong with any member that's not there anymore. Fans are the ones who create drama around it, just like they did with Mushroomhead.

It is sad to see but, like someone in the chat said, it's what happens when your band turns into a business that can't really stop. Addiction struggles aside, being in a band is like being in a bigamist marriage, and I'm sure those guys were so close together for so long that there were tons of issues that went into Joey's firing that couldn't be neatly summed up in a press release. Still, the optics are pretty bad for Slipknot, especially after kicking Jay out in much the same fashion.

Look at bands like Metallica and Green Day for example who's main members had to go through rehab and such for their issues with drugs and alcohol but had support.

I met him on his last tour in Europe with Sinsaenum and he was the nicest guy ever. Talked to every single fan, signed stuff, and took pictures all night long. You could tell though that something wasn't right. I'm not sure if it was because of his illness or something else, but the way he talked and reacted to his surroundings seemed kinda odd and not the way you would see him in interviews for example. And he was definitely into drinking. After I left, a friend of mine stayed a bit longer and had shots of vodka with him at the venue bar. So I think he was a very nice dude, one of the best metal musicians who have ever walked the earth, but said "demons" were definitely there and we're talking about 2018.
Additionally, it seems like addiction was also (at least one) reason why they kicked Chris Fehn. Joey's drumming is the core of that band. The songs are built from the drums up, all the guitars are percussive as hell, the riffs and just slamming along to the drums.. That's why the best songs they've done have been written in part by Joey. A lot of the members do seem like they at least were shitbags though.. The stories about all the internal tension when they were writing music, that's not normal for even keeled people. It's a wonder that they've stuck together for as long as they have.

The whole thing about him having that medical condition being confused for drug/alcohol issues is definitely some spin on Joey's part. When Joey died his bandmates in Sinsaneum made a statement about how they tried to get through to him for months/years and that he wasn't able to overcome his demons in the end. His girlfriend that found his body in her 911 called talked about him being a major alcoholic. Slipknot have seemed to be douchebags of late but i HIGHLY doubt he got kicked out because of misunderstandings of a medical condition. They get a lot of shit for not talking about why they did that but maybe they didn't want to hurt Joey more by saying "it's because he's a fucking addict who can't get his shit together alright??". Btw I LOVE Joey, one of my all time favorite drummers but there's ample evidence that he had problems.

What people need to remember here, is that there is probably a reason Slipknot did NOT give their version. So them not explaining and taking all this flack could very well be a huge show of respect on their part. He was most likely an addict, and we were only hearing an addict's side of the story here. Which should be met with empathy of course, but also keeping in mind that there most likely is a whole other side to the story, that was never told.

As Finn said, we have no idea what the contracts used to be or if Joey was a controlling member at one time etc. I would imagine though, that once he was removed from the band, if he had any rights as an owner, it was delt with back then. My gut is telling me that they got rid of Joey because of his alcoholism. I am assuming that everyone probably cleaned up and they didn’t want anybody around that can cause them to relapse. My take is that the family is probably pissed about them supposedly lying that they called the family after his death. If true, it would set them off. It’s probably not necessarily about the money. The drums and clothing is the really only thing that they should have returned immediately after his firing. The gear is purchased/owned by the musician and they basically kept joeys personal items they had no right too. The family was probably okay with it until they supposedly disrespected the family by lying about the condolences that they said they gave. It will probably be settled out of court quietly. It could also to just an excuse for the estate to get some money. Unfortunately, the accountants & lawyers get paid money from the estate for all this work do on it. It gives them an incentive to try and get more money out of joeys estate for themselves.

  • @imawesomeyourenot
    @imawesomeyourenot 4 місяці тому +2

I wrote something similar to this years ago, and i think while of course just my opinion, i think it cold be at least partially true:
The reason why Joey was removed from Slipknot, was because of Corey and over Paul. After Paul had died, Corey made it VERY known that he was unable or unwilling to just "get over it" and do any album/touring after losing Paul clearly hit him hard. Especially if you read/saw what he would say in interviews. However, in most every accompanying interviews (and ad nauseam), the question was asked of whomever the interviewer had to talk to was "what is gonna happen next?", "is it too soon to say?" ect. BUT when the question was asked to Joey, he would make it pretty clear that he/they were ready to record and tour...and over several months in mags and online he made it clear that Corey was holding up the process. Many interviews at the time Joey would state that if Corey wasnt ready they would move on without him and if i recall, there may have been a few interviews of Joey making it out that Corey was just being a baby about it ect. Im sure Joey would make the case for removing Corey and moving on to any and all members who would entertain it.
Now, when youre band is still at the top of their game and easily the most popular metal band on the planet, and a member that dies, but is also a very key member...you dont (or probably shouldnt) just mention casually about one of the most popular and successful even at that time singers that "If he wont do it, we'll get another one", thats bound to make other members either a: angry, or b: question Joeys judgment. Corey was also doing his Stone Sour stuff, so that was already putting pressure on Slipknot to do more soon as well. So animosity, press being taken in and out of context, and whatever other issues the band was already dealing with (9 guys...theres gonna be problems), it became something that needed dealt with.
If Corey, Clown, Joey, and Paul were the company/trademark holders, then assuming it was all "relatively" equal then itd come to a vote....and with no Paul its simply a 2 to 1 vote, and Joeys out.
Now kicking out one of the most influential drummers that metal world had seen in years is ALSO not to be taken lightly...but...ALL press is good press. So the ball is now in favor of Corey and Clown, and opportunity to see what the rest of the band can do.
The smartest thing Corey, and Clown could have done and DID, was make nondisclosure agreements (for Joey as well as other members that have left). That keeps Joeys mouth shut for future money wins and losses due to lawsuits ect. On top of the fact that now they get to introduce new "mystery" to their now already popular lore. Win/win for Slipknot.
Of course this hit Joey hard, how could it not? So im sure that he went through or had substance abuse/drinking problems after this (the WHOLE BAND DID at certain points at this point...Paul died from substance abuse ffs), being kicked out of "HIS" band, and really kind of being betrayed by his "brothers". The story of Joeys transverse myelitis could certainly be true, and i have no reason believe otherwise (not a medical professional at all of course), but while even a brief reading up on it can show that it can just happen, as well as be completely recovered from, it seems as though it COULDVE been a very good cover at least in the Slipknot camp, however weak or nonsensical it wouldve been- you dont kick out your brother when hes ill, you help him recover, ESPECIALLY if youve already lost a member by death regardless of cause. And sadly, while certainly only speculative, it could be said that seeing "his" band continue, and just as or even more successfully without him probably took its toll as well. At least his other band mates have a decent amount of respect and havent spoken ill of him even if they have firsthand knowledge of any potential substance abuse or other health issues.
So Clown and Corey removed a problem, unfortunately that problem was Joey. They knew that even if he was going to be out, he had money and would still make money from the band, and as well be able to pretty much walk into or create any band he wanted to. Sending an email was def a cowardly move...but not knowing anything of the situation other than press/interviews it couldve been the safest way they felt for them to do it.
Im sure that hearing the news of his death hit them hard, but if they had been as estranged as they all claim, then statements regarding Joey were/are STILL kept at a minimum. Other than the tributes at the shows, the merch that they can still sell, and whatever moneys go to Joeys estate (or lack of...hence this lawsuit).
It all seemed pretty ridiculous and incredibly sad, if not at all surprising.
TLDR; Speculation. Cory and Clown got rid of a "problem" member, that member went on to pass away from the blow that it took on his life. Whether medically, or due to substance abuse or both. Corey and Clown show their true colors even now (how many original member are there now?), and are still profiting off of someone elses legacy.
    Also, Slipknot sucks. Seriously.

I'm a new Slipknot fan so imagine my sadness when I find out that Joey isn't alive anymore since 2021. It feels like a cruel joke. Imagine the rage I feel for Joey, an OG, to be booted out by this band of brothers HE created and dedicated his life to. I want to cry for him. Gone way too soon. I love the Slipknot songs I've listened to but don't know if I can support further than that. Does anyone know where I can buy ethical Joey merch? Maybe even to support his estate? His mask is the one I loved the most.

I think it's useful to recognize that the band has pretty much _never_ gotten into the details and drama. One quite possible interpretation of that is that the majority of band members are respectfully protecting the troubled person(s) image they care about, rather than blab to the world about the individual's personal demons.
When you're in a 9-member band, and in every single instance there's _an individual_ that's complaining against a significant majority of the other members, there's a reasonable implication that the individual might be a non-insignificant part of the problem.

If the museum was separate from the live show, meaning if you had to pay an additional fee for the museum then one ninth of the money should go to whoever is suing the band on Joey's behalf. As far as the accusations made that they used his death as a marketing gimmick to make their album sales go up is crazy! All they did is dedicate the album to him! You can't sue them for that I don't think. The fact that this is coming from a "company" and not the family is strange as well. Honestly, after Paul died Joey was most likely so devastated that he was thrown into a downward spiral. Without Paul there to stick up for him while he was struggling with alcohol, drugs, and his health Corey and Clown took control and fired him during a time in his life where he needed these guys more than ever! The whole thing was just wrong and came across as being quite vindictive.

It's no secret that Paul and Joey both had their demons, and sadly neither of them got help before it was too late.
I suppose that we'll never really know how much effort their bandmates put in to trying to get them on the right track, so I'm not going to point the dirty end of the stick at them for it. However, given the dynamic that Slipknot has taken on in the last few years it wouldn't surprise me if they were regarded as liabilities to the Slipknot corporation, Addiction is a terrible and powerful thing and the only real way to get free is for the individual to want it for themselves, but sometimes showing those people that their lives are worth living and people love them gives them a reason to live and get better. When you turn your back on people that are caught in that cycle of addiction without even trying to help, they sink deeper into depression and the addiction gets much worse. MY gut tells me that not much effort was put into helping those guys, but, I wasn't there so perhaps I'm wrong.
As far as displaying Joey's belonging (Paul's too?) I think it's in poor taste and perhaps they shouldn't be doing it. The museum may be complimentary, but it's a marketing strategy designed to further the brand which means turning a profit, so in an indirect way they're absolutely making money off of it. Even if that had a legitimate reason for firing Joey, they couldn't have chose a worse way to do it. It's almost like being married for twenty years and having a family and filing for divorce in the same way. They owed it to him to at least do something of that magnitude in person, not a god damn email. That decision doesn't say much for them as people and it's very becoming of their character or integrity. Essentially they threw him away like an old snot rag after all he had done for that band which every one of them profited from and reaped the rewards of.
We'll always cherish the memories you gave us, Slipknot changed a lot of people's lives and there wouldn't have been a Slipknot without you guys. We love and miss you Joey and Paul

Transverse myelitis is a rare but documented sequela of heroin use. While the underlying etiology is not clearly elucidated, the prevailing pathophysiologic mechanism amongst existing literature suggests an immune-mediated hypersensitivity reaction due to heroin insufflation following a long period of abstinence.

This whole thing is ridiculous and disrespectful to Joey and his legacy. Joey and Slipknot were on good terms. He praised .5, said he still loved them, and they were still brothers. The End, So Far says dedicated to Joey inside it, so you know its bullshit that they started saying that after the release. Joey loved his fans. There's a reason why he let Slipknot display his items in the Knotfest museum and never tried to get them back. I dont see this as a coincidence that they're all of a sudden pulling this right at the 25th anniversary of their self titled album. Joey played a major part on that album. You know Slipknot are going to want to honor his legacy for this celebration. These people are just looking for a quick settlement. If they go through with it and win, they'll basically be deleting Joey from Slipknot history. Joey would never want that.

As a drummer myself I’m always drawn to the drums on any music I listen to. Joey was the main reason I started listening to slipknot and I loved joeys creativity and skill behind the kit and slipknot will never be what it once was and I really don’t like how the band seems to want to continue by constantly replacing band members whenever convenient and I’m just not a fan of that idea I’m not saying you can’t replace a member when necessary but someone like Joey was just soooo important and really made the band great like it originally was

  • @Dubmayer

Absolutely hilarious! Its questionable if the masks and drums were really owned by Joey and not by some "Slipknot-Holding" and some worn out shoes that he probably just left in a rehaersal room. I mean come on! These "artefacts" belong into a Slipknot Museum! Thats still where Joey is highly remebered and apreciated.
