Moore's law has massively slowed down. But I think that's good so there will be less e-waste from "outdated" computers.
Also, that's probably why companies have switched from making their devices faster to less repairable so you have to buy new ones more often.

GTX 680 is not that power hungry. It's a 180W TDP card (can pull 200+W if OC'ed to the limit). You could run this system fine on One (good quality) 1000W rated PSU.
Try 780 Ti regarding the Kepler generation. One of those will easily pull 300W (if overclocked). So will pull over 1000W with full load on 3 GPU's and CPU.

I'm amazed enough you managed to get THREE of those 680 SOC cards! Admittedly, the better sli scaling does have me hopeful for putting my 690 to use at some point sooner rather than later.
Even if it defeats the look of them, I just can't help but feel like those cards deserve to be waterblocked for an SLI in order to address the temperature situation fully. But that would require a generous amount of radiator area to do them justice. Then again, I think it was something like... four 480mm radiators could be linked up and then you could use one of those big home size box fans to push enough air. JayzTwoCents had a video on such a project. It was big enough to almost be able to maintain passively on their setup.

For the price of getting the game to run 100% faster with SLI, you might as well get a new PC every 2-3 years to run it 100% faster.

I wonder how those cards perform with 5 Noctua fans, and blowing air towards the motherboard instead.

Try going to a 2-way SLI and try older drivers. Like 331.xx or slightly older. SLI scaling may improve. Also, the cpu and memory is the bottle neck at lower resolutions. Batch 3913 is close to the magic bin. Should be able to get 3.8 easily. 4.0 possibly with decent voltages. Memory...eh. It's Micron and won't scale much. Maybe 8-8-8 at 1600. Or try 9-9-9 at 1866. A nice x5650 would pair nicely here with some BBSE, Hypers or even PSC bins. (Corsair v2.2, v2.1(2K8-8-8), V7.1) QPI matters for SLI scaling....but I'm not familiar enough right now with x58 and a PLX chip inline.

CPU can do more, or with some 4 core Xeons at 4GHz ... problem is with chipset cooling if you have these 3 tanks on MB.

That motherboard looks the best of the best back from 2009, funny you consider that retro... My 2600k probably its also considered retro, well i'm impressed about the i7 920 no more than 20% usage in all the benchmarks with 3 gpu
