    You are 100% correct! If pico gear is listening to this and reviewing comments, Internal recording would be Phenomenal. I was going to buy this kit, but I stopped myself because it didn't have internal recording. I really hope Pico is listening.

      They are definitely aware, it'll be different for them since they are more based out of Europe for now so we'll see how they can get around that USA Patent for internal recording inside a wireless transmitter. We'll definitely see!

      Hey hey again WORTH IT OR NOT!
      For something so small, its crazy it gets the audio it does! The NR and HPF do a superb job, I was quite surprised! As of r Firmware 2.5, the NR and HPF does not work into the external lav mic, but I suspect this will be coming in future firmware updates!

      @@TLDR_filmmaker what do you think of the VU-meter on the picomic receiver??? The picomic2 (non pro for me) is nice, but the peak line thing always appearing -12Db apart from the audio VU-meter bar, on my unit, running 2.5 firmware, being used to the peak line touching the bar as it lights up, well, the VU-meter just looks wierd compared to what I'm used to... I mean, if I had to guess, I'd say it was some kind of bug, but unfortunately they told me it's just the limiters and whatnot, causing it, which I don't know enough about professional audio to know if it's truly what's going on, or if what I'm seeing on the screen truly has something funny going on...

    Hello friends of the Picomic 2! First of all a big thank you for this video. Nice job! This micro miniiiiature which does the job on my interviews etc... For me the goal of being "miniiiiature" is in fact so that 'it's hidden, and not like the Rode wireless Go (which I used and which works well too) which is too apparent. On this point it is already won. But when you come to use it with a MOF (Meilleur Ouvrier de France) dressed all in white like the great chefs (but also the bride...), then you say to yourself: too bad there's still this mini black barrette right in the middle of her immaculate white uniform! Of course, we can tell ourselves that it is only a detail, but it is often the detail that makes the difference. So I looked into it and now it's fixed. The microphone is delivered with a black windshield (hide for the wind) of course. But when you have a 3D printer and a little time, hop you model this little cache (after removing the fur!) and you print it in 3D in white PLA. (but also in yellow, red, blue, green and all the colors of the rainbow depending on how your client is dressed) And there Bingo, it's a perfect match. No need to draw you the proof is here: sudvideoprod.fromsmash.com/picomic-white So if like me you are sensitive to small details don't hesitate to tell me. (rogerb@sudvideoprod.com)

      Hey hey Alex and 50450720!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      You're most welcome! Yup the internal recording is definitely a life saving feature. But of course it depends on your use case, as I talked about in the video. For most the internal recording probably won't be used as much in normal filming situations where signals won't get lost, so in those cases, the Picomic is a great small easy solution. Now lets pray that PicoGear is currently working on a internal recording version for the future!
      Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

    The mic is on the clip, this is a revolutionary thing and this is the thing I need now.
    I am using Saramonics and a Hollyland system. If this came from Rode, or a well-known brand it would be a no-brainer to buy it. I am still hesitating...

      It really is revolutionary and I love deploying the Picomic whenever it fits the filming situation. I am surprised that other major companies haven't tried it. I am looking forward to the future as I feel this design needs to be improved upon, especially with internal recording capabilites!

    I got my pico Mike and the very next day was hired to do a talk show. Everybody loved the pico mic and it worked perfectly. The biggest problem I had was reminding guests not to leave with my mic. I’ve been super excited about this thing ever since I first heard about it. I got a set to test, I’m super happy, now I’m going to order another

    Thank you great video. Would love to see a short video on how to set up the Picomic with a camera to get the best from it as there does not seem to be anything about this around.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 роки тому +1

      Hey hey Dave!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      I had a walkthrough of the picostream receiver, but that was much older firmware so some things have changed.
      In terms of how to get the best from it, do a search about "gain staging". Essentially you start with the Gain (volume) of the mic, the output of the receiver, and finally the preamp setting of your recorder or camera. It's a basic way to approach setting up microphones but depending on your camera, some preamp setting rules may not apply.
      For Panasonic cameras, you can set the Preamp as low as possible and let the Mic and Reciever do all the work for great sound. Sony cameras are all over the place. Some can be set low, some may need to be set high. So you need to test this on your own to see how your own camera's mic level preamp behaves.
      That being said. Set your camera to the best mic level preamp that you have figured out. Next on your picomic, when you talk normally, set your picomic sensitivity so that your voice is bouncing a little bit in the yellow. From there we move to the receiver output gain, you will adjust this until your see your cameras own sound bars bounce around -12dB to -6dB.
      This is the basic idea, from here you will have room to do some post audio editing with compression and limiters etc.
      Hope this helps!
      Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

      @@TLDR_filmmaker Thank you for the information. It was so much easier to set it up when it had the tone. Shame they dumped that from the latest software. My problem is that there seems a lot of noise from the preamps in the Pico when I lift the gain to the sort of level that Curtis Judd had his. Could you confirm how far you find you can lift the gain as I want to keep the Canon R6 camera down to the lowest I can.

    this review is so thorough and puts the mics on real situation tests, which is so valuable. Thank you so much. I was almost convinced to buy this picomic system, but then I reached the Raw Distance Test starting at 26:10 .... does it mean that when the person turns their back to you the communication is lost ? that is a real problem because you can have situations other than the "talking head" looking at the camera, where the person has to turn their back ... and then the signal seems lost almost entirely. as you mention at 8:00 with no line of sight the maximum distance is 10 feet, so around 3 meters ... I wonder if you got any sound recorded in the narrative action film you mention, where people are moving around and turning their bodies here and there .... did you keep the receiver less than 3 meters away from the actors??

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 роки тому +1

      Hey hey Blas!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      These outdoor tests I do is the worst of the worst scenario where there is no physical structure around. If I was outdoors in a pedestrian mall or outdoors in the backyard where there are houses around. You will have different outcomes and potentially have signals much further with no line of sight.
      For the movie (not released just yet). We've had many outdoors scenes, but there was always structures around to help reflect the signal. The Sound op during these scenes are more than 3 meters away. The one time we were in an open park the sound person was natural in a position where there is line of sight.
      So unfortunately with the nature of 2.4ghz systems, this is a constant battle people will have to be aware of while filming. Here is hoping that the next Picomic will have backup recording to help with the editing process if signal does break.
      Hope this helps!

      Hey hey Glyn!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      For sure, I feel its a only a matter of time when Picogear figures out how to get onboard recording into their transmitters. The hard part is making sure we can get some control over the recording levels instead of leaving it 100% automated. I would think the act of adding in chips that allow for recording is whats going to make this hard. However their older Picomic 1 was larger and they managed to shrink the whole thing, so I would assume we will see a Picomic 3 that is the same size as the Picomic1, maybe a little thicker, and that should give it some room for their design for an onboard recorder. Can't wait to see them achieve this!

    Great review as always. I love my Pico setup and got the new longer range mics before the version with the plug-in for an external mic was released. They are a very responsive company, but it's impossible to tell which firmware you have on the receiver because version 2.5 has been listed for the last, like, two years. But every time I check it tells me I need a firmware upgrade so I'm never sure what version I have. I wish they would name the updates a little more clearly. The only other thing is that I wish I could buy a couple extra windmuffs, because I have a feeling I'm lose one one of these days!

      Ah yes, I did recall seeing their long range upgrade before this one.
      To see what firmware version you're on, go to the "gear" icon for setup and it should tell you what firmware its on. Depending on how many firmwares you've updated, you may need to do the extra step of reformatting the picostreams storage to update to the larger newer firmware file. Hope this helps!

      To be honest I felt like I was going to break the dam windscreen when removing it(not to mention the picomic 2 itself, dam it's tiny), so I just leave them on all the time... Besides, the windscreen material seems to only be attached to the plastic clip by some kind of double sided or built-in tape judging by what I saw when I accidentally started separating the 2 pieces... They haven't come loose yet, so unless I really need to take them off, I'm not going to. Just saying... I probably won't ever need the windscreen, but it's harder to lose them if they're always attached. The only way I could see it not working out, is if you did require it in it's low profile, almost invisible, capacity, but if I'm using my picomic 2 for UA-cam, or audio voiceover video fixup style recording, which honestly, seems like what my main usage would be is audio/video production and video/audio post production/editing I can't see anyone caring about whether there's a black fuzzy hanging off their shirt
      Oh, and we're up to version 2.7 on the picomic 2 firmware too

      The Lark 150 definitely has one of my most favorite RX designs out of all the wireless mics I've reviewed so far. The Picostream is everybit as functional too than most of the competition, but that hollyland dial design is just perfect for a camera operator behind the camera!

    Hey TLDR filmmaker! Im very glad you are on to these lavalier systems again! If I may tell, I have a theoretical budget solution, and Im interested in your opinion.
    In case I only can afford one wireless-transmitter pack. Lets say a bit higher end one like a Rodelink. Can have a Y splitter with two lav mics connected to the transmitter and recieve a mixed sound to the reciever? Or is there any budget friendly preamp for it? Because I wouldnt buy two wireless kit, and im not a big fan of Rode Wireless GO, because of its internal battery.
    Thank you very much in advvance!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 роки тому

      Hey hey again Larion!
      If you were to use a Y-splitter into the one transmitter of the RODE link theres technically no easy way to adjust each lav mic to their own volume. You could put some sort of passive preamp inbetween each lav, but that means you would literally have to go to it to adjust the volume, you couldn't do it from behind the camera. I'm not sure if you are in the states, but if the internal battery is the only thing holding you back from the RODE Wireless Go, you may want to look into the Saramonic Uwmic9 system: geni.us/Neowz (affiliate link). This was my first dual channel wireless system and it uses AA batteries while having all the functions of a traditional wireless system. However this system does not use the 2.4ghz band and uses the 500mhz band. They have a Uwmic10 for another band for other countries.
      Cost wise should near the RODE link price and give you what you want to two speakers and control of their volume. Hope this helps!

      Yes, you can use it with a computer. If the computer only has a headphone jack then its most likely a combo jack, so make sure the Picostream is set to "TRRS" mode. If your computer has a mic jack, then make sure your picostream is set to "TRS" mode.
      At this current time you cannot use the mic without the receiver. I talk about hoping that Picogear will make a Picomic 3 Pro that will have built in internal recording. This would make the system an absolute no brainer for any wedding videographer and more!

    On point for Corporate and Quick Q&A interviews. We have 2 sets of this on Band 0 and Band 1 in a large room and they work flawless. Rode is just too heavy / bulky for those wearing light clothing esp on women. I've tried every way to be discreet with them. And with Pico it is effortless which makes them Priceless! Audio from the standard mic itself is VERY usable and even better if you can run it through a channel bus for real time EQ and compression via LINE LEVEL. They are very transparent and good on cameras. My Sennheiser G4 system is now reserved for trade shows where 2.4GHz ISM signals can be a nightmare. Picomic is a micro ninja in my studio bag. They won't even know it's there.

    Another good review. Listening on my studio monitors, the raw audio sounds a bit flat, could be a combination of the mics and the camera's pre-amp, and that it's raw. Have you tried running it to other solutions like a MixPre? Do you think it has the latitude to be sweetened in post?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 роки тому +1

      Hey hey again Michael!
      The sound quality test part was ran through a Tascam DR-40, not the latest and greatest, but something different from the Sony's Preamps. Most likely the capsule I presume as I am working on my lavalier shoot out video and the external lavs do put their own flavor of sound into the picomic 2 pro.
      As for sweetening the sound, when going into a Sony camera, I can't push the highs or mid-highs too much without it sound crunchy to my ears. The Tascam gives you a little more latitude as I am recording at Line level instead of mic levels (Picomic can output line level) thats helped a bit. I'm not sure if in the future Picogear will give us the ability to fine tune the internal compression ourselves so we can tune the mic to our preferences. As of right now the compression kicks in around -20db on the mic-preamp soundbar.
      With the amount of features they have done in 2 years with constant firmware updates, I feel sound will continue to improve and user customization could be coming for those that want more control.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 роки тому +2

      Hey hey LeraN!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      This completely depends on what you want to use the camera for. I used to use a GH5 for all my work (narrative filmmaking) and that camera to this day is my favorite one to use for those types of projects. However as I got to doing more youtube stuff, I needed video AF that will follow me around instead of me staying in one spot all the time. The Sony A7iii does a great job at this as it was my first Sony Camera. Those are the two main factors I look at in terms of which camera I like to use. That being said if you are a beginner and looking for something that can do it all on a budget to get you started with youtube, the Sony ZV-1 is my favorite for this purpose.
      If you are looking for to do narrative films or commercial like work for people, the GH5s and Sony A7iii are great candidates. The only difference is one has good AF and the other does not, but if you are pulling focus, then it doesn't matter as much. At that point you'll have to ask yourself do you want a smaller sensor vs a FF sensor. I am still a huge fan of M43 sensors because having too much depth of field is not always desirable. I feel the M43 sensor with some nice lenses I can get the Depth of field I want that makes sense. The only time that FF sensors makes sense is to have shallow depth of field when using 24mm lenses to 35mm lenses, have some shallow depth of field with those focal lengths looks great. Once you get to 50mm it could become too shallow for what you are wanting.
      Thats just my thoughts having filmed projects with both sensors sizes and for different types of video work. Hope this helps!

      Hey hey ne14makingart!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      There were some early ideas of people sticking the picomic directly under their shirt with some skin tape, but I'm not sure that would work the best because of the bulkiness compared to a lav mic. Definitely the best way is to get a low profile Lav mic that are much easier to tape under your shirt so that you don't see any weird bumps. Of course this also depends on if the person will be moving around a lot as shirt noise could be an issue.

      Hey hey again Neon!
      Well ahead of you on a RODE vs Picomic video. I didn't want this video to be nearly an hour long so I am breaking certain elements apart to be standalone so that the audience doesn't get confused all over the place.
      The menu really has not changed at all since I reviewed the original Picomic and did a video of my walkthrough of the picostream ua-cam.com/video/ZZfhk5vjyUk/v-deo.html
      The only thing that is added is the "output" menu will now give you a bunch of selections based on the camera you are plugging into and thats it. Otherwise the parts that I showed you about the HPF and NR as well as RF Band, those menus you see is basically it. Very very simple menu.
      TLDR: The RODE will technically have the better sounding audio because its capsule is much larger than the picomic. The Picomic uses a lot of clever processing with the cellphone style capsule they are using to get the most out of your voice. This becomes a form vs function battle because the size of this thing is just insane and of course the usability to hide it now if needed.
      At the end of the day its not for everyone depending on their needs, but for people who really want the easy form and battery life for their needs, this mic will make it super simple for them to film an entire day and never have to worry about "is my mic on" or "my wireless mic keeps bouncing on my shirt and getting muffled".

      Hey hey houseofrhythm10!

      This completely depends if you have a inside or outside ceremony. As you saw in the indoor obstruction test, I was able to walk through the house with my body blocking it at the extreme end and you could still here me. This is because indoors the frequencies can bounce around, outdoors is much more difficult cause theres no structure for the bounce. So for an indoor ceremony if you have your audio recorder hidden under the podium or at the front pew, in theory you should be just fine for the entire ceremony because your recorder is very close by and you're indoors.

    If Pico Mic Pro 3 were to come out with onboard recording, it would be a game changer. I like the sound of the Picomic pro 2.
    Right now, DJI seems to be the best option on the market for on board recording capability. I am considering the DJI for that one reason only.
    I currently have the Blink500Pro and unfortunatly, I get drop outs even when shooting 10-15 ft away indoors or outdoors. Their new Blink900 does not have onboard recording either, and I am not a big fan of their products anymore because of the many dropouts I have experienced and the editing nightmare they present.

      I sure am hoping for the next Picomic 3 to have some sort of onboard recording, I'm sure they know this from my video and hopefully they will not overlook this important feature. As of right now the only systems I have tests is the RODE Wireless GO 2 and the Comica XD PRO when it comes to onboard recording. Both systems performed well with the RODE having the best outdoor wireless distance. I have not test the DJI as they never got back to me about a review unit and I have yet to test Lensgo 328c for the same reason. From what it looks like both do decently well when it comes to the onboard recording. For the time being I don't think you can go wrong with either company depending on your budget and needs, DJI and RODE are probably the better bet in terms of company firmware support.

Also, I've heard they might reintroduce the 0Db test tone, and although that is a useful thing to have, it's something that you aren't specifically told how to use, especially if you wanted to use a 0Db test tone to set up your mixer(as it's different than setup on a camera I think, although I've never had a camera to try it with, so IDK...)

      When it comes to the 0dB test tone. I treat it as thats the maximum the picomic will ever transmit. So depending on my camera and mic level setting. For sony's I will keep my "0db" at the -12db mark and for Panasonic I will let it go all the way up to -1dB on my sound bar.

    I've been pretty happy with my PicoMic 1. Foamies and furries for a normal lav mic work fine to combat wind. The only problem I have is that the dock interface is finicky, I sometimes have to move the transmitters around a bit inside their "bays" to get them to connect.
    I've been debating upgrading to the new transmitters. I'm not sure I want to sink more money into a system that doesn't have backup recording. If PicoGear did a third version with internal recording and 32-bit float it'd be an insta-buy for me.

      Hey hey Al!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      Ah, check this with your receiver to ensure that the three gold pins have free range of movement, you should be able to freely push them down and let them spring back up. If one of them maybe got some gunk on it and it isn't springing back fully, that could be the problem. Simply clean up anything that may be causing the friction and you'll be back in business.
      I think for now, if the Picomic 1's are doing just fine for you and you're in no need of the external lav feature. Then theres probably not any real reason to upgrade on the sound improvements alone. The Picomic1's on the latest firmware sounds decent and if you wanted more bass frequencies, a little EQ will be a nice temporary tweak.
      With the market moving as it is and we are finally seeing more companies break past that USA Patent dispute. We are all in for a real treat this coming year or two. I'm sure Picogear is aware and their engineers are probably working on something!

    Thank you so much for this review. I bought my PicoMic 1 in early 2020. And I'm really interested in the PM2Pro.
    Could you help with insight on the following:
    1. There is a static sounding noisefloor in the PM1. Unlike other wired lavs whose noisefloors are more of whitenoise, the PM1's sounds like digital glitches. Did you hear this on your PM1, and have you come across it in the PM2Pro?
    2. Is it possible to insert a Y-Connector to the PM2Pro External Mic port - and have 2 wired Lavs going into 1 Transmitter? Essentially allowing 4 lavs into the system?
    (Some Y-Connectors don't allow signal to work from both ends at the same time....so would be really great to know)
    What I would love to see in the Next Gen Receiver:
    1. SD Card for recording, with On-Screen File Exprlorer.
    2. 4 Transmitters support
    3. Expansion Kit: The system could include Transmitters, Receiver, and Charging Bay. I would like to have panel discussions with 4, 6 or 8 people..... So Imagine a System in which you can buy as many mics you need. 8 mics on a Charging Bay, and once you remove them, they are Synched with the Receiver, that's recording individual mono files to an SD card... but outputting a mixed audio signal to the Audio Out jack.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 роки тому +1

      Hey hey again Dice Gamble!
      I have not come across that problem specifically with my Picomic 1 or 2pro. I would say double check you are on the latest firmware as their earlier firmware was more noisy than it is now. The digital sound could be a product of how your cameras mic input is handling the RF going through the Receiver. If you have a field recorder do you also hear the same digital sound in the recording?
      I have not personally tried a y splitter to see if it will power two Lavalier mics. I know in my 6 RODE TRICKS VIDEO ua-cam.com/video/KBLorAFsQow/v-deo.html
      The specific headphone duplicator cable I used was able to transmit the power to two lavs. I'm not currently in the office to try it out quickly on the picomic to see if it'll do the same. if I can remember to do so when I get back I'll try and reply.
      That being said, depending on your recording situation. I would only do a 4 mic setup this way as your last resort. mainly because if someone on one channel is making a bunch of noises while the other is speaking. You'll never be able to clean up that audio enough because they are both being recorded to one channel. So for me personally, this is a last resort tactic instead of a main tactic.
      Hope this helps!
      All those next gen ideas are solid!

    While I am very intrigued by the PicoMic 2 Pro, as the tiny size and noise reduction features are great. However, the outdoor range gives me pause. I fear that even indoors, someone turning away from line of sight could cause a dropout. No audio is never acceptable to a client, and I simply can't risk that. I doubt most people will invest in both the PicoMic Pro AND the Rode Video Mic system.
    Q: Have you tried other wireless mics in this same outdoor test location? I would be very interested to see how other systems compare.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  Рік тому

      Hey hey again David!
      Yes I have tried others in the same location. To this day either a UHF system or the RODE wireless GO II has the best No-Line Of sight distance while outdoors. When indoors you do not have to worry as much when they turn around because the walls in the room begin reflecting the signal all over the place so it always gets back to the receiver. The only time while indoors where you would potentially run into a problem with No-line of sight is if you're in a large auditorium with the picomic on stage and the receiver way in the back row 200ft away.

      Hey hey Video Gizmology!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      Correct, during my battery timelapse the two lavs were sitting two rooms away with a fan blowing at it for constant sound. If you turn off the receiver without the TX attached, the TX will turn off on their own while still attached to someone. When you turn on the RX again, you may need to be near TX to make sure they connect again, otherwise you will just need to pop them off the person, dock them for a second on the RX, and it will connect right away.
      If that last scenario is not ideal, you simply just mute one or both of the TX from the receiver without every having to touch the TX.

      Hey Hey again ALi!
      I talked about the differences in the video in the beginning portions before I dived into the tests.

      If their website does not ship to Bangladesh, I would email them and ask them how it may be possible for you to purchase a unit.

    Can these connect to an iPhone

      You will need to make sure your iphone has a USB audio adaptor for the Picomic Receiver to connect into. The mics themselves cannot connect to an iphone on their own.

    I have the Picomic 1 and I've noticed some issues. That's why I'm watching a few of your videos trying to decide whether to get the new picomic 2 or pro or just switch to the rode wireless go 2. In my last video, I have the mic clipped to the left side of my shirt and you can clearly hear the fluctuations in volume of my voice.

      Hey hey ICanDoItMyself!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      Watching the video, the fluctuations you have is normal as it only happens when you look towards the camera when your voice is projecting away from the picomic on your left. When you do look to your left you usually had your head tilted down to point at what you were explaining so the mic is getting the full brunt of your voice. To lessen this affect you could have it clipped right down the center of your shirt instead off to the left, this would be a happy medium area. Otherwise one thing you could learn to use is something called a "compressor" when you are editing your videos. Take a look at @curtis Judd 's channel. If you type his name and "compressor settings" he'll walk you through how to set it up. Essentially this will keep your voice more or less level across the board so it doesn't matter as much where your head is facing.
      Hope this helps!

      @@TLDR_filmmaker I actually place the microphone to the left side to try combating it tilting into my chest. In thinking of trying a headset microphone like they use for singing or presentations and plug it into the picomic pro, wireless go II or maybe the new DJI wireless mics I just saw something about last night.
