I love your approach. Once I started looking into unit studies I had so many type a mind with there print outs I’m like ohh gosh then like you were saying you could make a meal or a headband or go to the zoo to see the animals I love simple relatable ideas that don’t cost much and isn’t book work 😂
At our library we have an amazing service called Classroom Carry Out. I "place my order" a few weeks ahead of time and fill out a questionnaire. Questions include grade levels, specific preferences, and authors you prefer. The librarians do ALL the work. I always tweak what I get, not every book is a winner, but I am able to use THEIR expert knowledge of literature and get another perspective. It is truly a life saver. Using this totally free resource, frees me up to focus on other areas of the unit study.
I am planning on starting homeschooling next semester and you have lifted a big weight off my shoulders! I was very overwhelmed by the 6,9 or 12 week units. It seemed to be what everyone was doing. Thank you!
That's the beauty of homeschooling. Your family decides what's best! If something isn't working, you can drop it. If somethings working really well, you can ride the wave for as long as makes sense
I have been looking at Gather Round to do this for me, but I also have some leftover science & history curriculum from The Good and the Beautiful. We are planning to do Botany from TGATB next.... I would love to help it cover other subjects like spelling!

I love the thought of the unit study and I've watched so many videos on how did it I am still a show not sure how did weekend I have so many awesome books that I did spend a lot of money on but at least they were used books.lol is there anything anywhere that shows how you've written things out? I feel like I am making something bigger than it should be. I want to do around the world. And I have tons of stuff to do that but I just don't know where to begin at all! Part of me feels like do they need to be so fancy and sewn nice like all the ones you can buy on Teachers Pay Teachers. And then another question I have is do you write everything out as in you make your kids write everything out? Or do you send just talk about everything?
I love the around the world idea! One thing I used to do was have my kids browse the books or material I was thinking about and letting them pick where we started. That way they are invested in their learning too. I don't have anything written out per se, but once yall get a good idea on what you want to start a unit study on, you can Google "[that topic] unit study" to see what other blogging homeschoolers came up with. Pick what you like and skip what you don't. We definitely combined a bunch of fun activities that had no paperwork with other written assignments. That way the unit studies were always fun but still rigorous
I was able to homeschool my kids for almost free. Definitely check out what is free at the library and plans on blogs before shelling out money on something like teachers pay teachers. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE teachers pay teachers. But it can get expensive if you are buying lessons frequently.
You are so well versed in all of this. How long did it take you to get a handle on homeschooling in general? My son is only 1 but because baby 2 is on the way, I’m trying to think ahead while I’ve still got some brain capacity to spare. So much information to take in, it’s overwhelming!
That's smart to get ahead of it early. Congratulations on your little one coming soon ❤ the best advice I ever read for teaching littles is "talking is teaching." Narrating to them what's going on. Creating conversations with them. Facial expressions. Songs. It all matters during this time while they're little. We homeschooled for 3 years and loved it. My kids are currently back in public school because that was the best decision for our family during this season. Hoping to do it again soon.
My 12 year old does not seem to want To do any activities that are put in front of him. Any suggestions, he really just wants to get “school” done and over with, not sure how to reach him🤷♀️
Maybe go adventuring for a few days. Unplugging could help with the whole "let's get this over with" because they'd rather have screen time or something. Then just observe what interests him. Perhaps even dive into his game (or whatever he's into) and see what lessons show up there.
