Meet Jiang Yu Shan (江玉山, Hisham Al-Haroun), Taiwan's master of Monkey Kung Fu. He has lived over 20 years in Taiwan and has practiced kung fu for over 40 years. He is the 33rd generation Shaolin disciple and a master of Hou Quan, Wing Chun, Bagua Zhang, Xin Yi Ba, Yiquan, Tai Chi and Qigong.
He has also worked as a combat instructor for Taiwan's police, marine corps and counter-terrorist unit. Most importantly, he possesses real kung fu which he has learned from the direct lineages of the legendary kung fu masters such as Sun Lu Tang, Chen Min Lun and Wang Xiang Zhai.

@Peter Hofmann The purpose of that exercise seems to be primarily to develop stability in your body (learn to control the weight, not let the weight control you). It requires super strong forearms but it's a full body movement. Skill is definitely involved because there is lots of room to develop your own technique of twisting the weight from one side to another

How strong is master Hasan's grip strength. With those big hands of his can he submit your average man just grabbing him? There are only 54 people on earth who can squeeze down the number 4 hand gripper. If he can do it on you tube it will add more credibility to monkey kungfu.

About that barbell disk suspended on a stick.
Some time ago I had to shovel a good deal of gravel (we did the parking spot), and couldn't help but notice that handling a simple shovel actually requires the application of your body power in many unique ways. As I did the barbell training at the time (squats, cleans, jerks -- such stuff), I appreciated how much more complicated movement simple shoveling is. A couple of days before I read about them using weights in traditional kung-fu. It definitely rings some bells :D. After all, the original Qigong and kung-fu borrowed a lot from everyday tasks people had to do in ancient times.
Now back in Finland you have some snow, don't you :) So I wonder if you use shoveling the snow in your backyard as an exercise.
Thanks for your videos, nice job!

It is intereting to see. These are all standard gongfu morning practices. even little kids learn this. they become more difficult when your musscles are too large. that is why in the past the gongfu masters were not overly concentrated on developing big muscles, because they are in the way for agility, which was higher prized than musculature. It is under the influence of modernization that musculature became a thing. Even in the Chinese daoist wudang mountains where I studied myself it had become an issue, so older teachers retreated from teaching.

VAHVA Fitness you are travelling and meeting the real masters. A problem is that western people are easy to fool. I have seen so many videos of people calling themselves sifu or master. People actually believe it. I have watched videos getting great comments and millions of views and they have no idea what they are talking about. People see that the guy is a sifu according to himself and they love it. You know there are more phonies than the real thing.

Qi gong training is useless unless you really try to change your way if doing things. You can't just expect to do a bit here and there to add to your karate or whatever external stuff you do. Internal stuff requires a major change in your muscle memory. You must change the basics. For example relaxation is key. You have tomba able to,totally relax every joint in your body. It's not only a bit of relaxing here and there. You must be able to totally relax at will. Qi can not flow through tense joints. Stand up with knees slightly bent and butt curled forward slightly instead of arching your back like you normally do. Your shoulders must drop. If shoulders are relaxed they will drop. Concentrate deeply to get everything relaxed. Hips are difficult to relax, but a must. You may gave to stand for a long time to attain a totally relaxed body. Don't give up. It's worth it. Forget your old ways. This is much better. It's very hard but worth it. Eventually it will be your natural way.

I notice that all the martial arts guys are immensely strong tough guys who probably do not even need martial arts to defend themselves. I remember a Samoan friend of mine who said he was not afraid to go out at night in bad areas. "Nobody bothers me" he said. Of course he was built like a tank with arms like oak trees. Back in the day I carried a small .38 Special SW and luckily I never had to use it. I am skinny and weak.

I thought Taijiquan, Baguazhang and Xingyiquan were the only purely internal chinese martial arts, which require fang song (looseness of body). This stuff looks mostly external to me.

The idea of culture revolution is to wipe out everything from the old era, including traditional mannerisms and martial arts. This guy is like an archeologist to excavate these forgotten artifacts of martial arts applications. One aspect is missing in these video, the nerve system, eyes sight reflex conditioning among Shaolin 72 methods. It's a similar to the idea of speed bag in boxing. Ability to evade sharp weapons or punches is more emphasis by the old masters than attacking skills.
