Dutch killed the people who challenged what his idea of power was. Dutch thought he was better than anyone he met and when they showed power over him, he got threatened.
Dutch doesn't like his authority being challenged and this is no more obvious than when Arthur tries to convince him to let John and his family leave. Notice how Dutch latches onto when Arthur "insists"? That's a power move. That's an authoritative decision that Dutch doesn't feel Arthur has the right to make.

Dutch knew it all along. He knew that the wild west was on a decline and that the gang’s best years were over, he waged war against capitalism. The gang could’ve easily go west and leave the heat AND continue earning money and maybe some scores too. Remember how easy was the robbery in Valentine? Yeah. Also at some point Dutch could pick Sadie to get their money from Blackwater since she was unknown to the law. Bu the thing is, before the ferry heist that was gone wrong, the gang was stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. After the ferry heist, everyone started to make money for “the gang” and by that I mean Dutch. I bet that in the end the money that the gang collected was more than the ferry heist in Blackwater.

I absolutely adore the scene where Dutch kills Bronte because it's one of the few times where he lets his mask slip. In that moment, he is giving a glimpse into who he's going to become in 12 years. Killing Bronte does nothing, stops nothing, and Dutch knows it. But he can't stop himself. He sees Bronte as the manifestation of everything ruining his life. And as pointless as it is, he has to kill him. That's the paradox.

Besides storming his mansion was fun I ended up using a shotgun with incendiary ammo set half the place on fire.. I don't know if you're entirely correct, but you're at least partially correct. Killing Bronte, while they were planning it, seemed like a good business move just like he was saying to Hosea and Arthur. Was there an easier way? Yeah. But robbing a bank in Saint Denis is a terrible idea anyway. Killing Bronte just showed that Dutch didn't wanna screw around with the risk of a "ransom". The Pinkertons would have never allowed that. They'd rather Bronte die and capture Dutch (because of Cornwall's funding) than to pay them a bunch of money and honorably leave.

arthur mentions in his journal that despite all his “needling”, micah always made sure to play it cool with dutch. dutch can be so... cavalier about other peoples’ deaths most of the time and the game wants us to know it started with blackwater. that’s why the strange man mentions the woman he killed there in the first game and why in the first mission arthur asks about it and dutch avoids the question entirely.
doesn’t mean he doesn’t truly care sometimes, but he does whatever he wants. micah allows that to happen because he sees an opportunity to exercise his own sadism and greed. he realized the unique tool that is dutch-a leader that’s easily led.

I find it funny how Micah didn't know Dutch the longest, but it turns out he knew him the best. He knew that he could easily manipulate Dutch, simply by telling him what he wanted to hear, feeding his ego, and supporting him and his plans without a doubt, no matter how crazy or damning they may be. That's how Dutch ended up trusting someone like Micah over people who were truly loyal to him for years; and that's how Micah had such a great influence on the outcome of Dutch's plans. Considering this, it's no wonder why Dutch rarely listened to Hosea. Not only did Hosea not show the utmost faith in Dutch's judgement, but he advised against his plans and actions, thus showing doubt.
This game's story and characters are amazing!

  • @combinecommando001

Dutch never had any intentions of ever leaving the US, he wanted to keep the gang going for as long as possible. He had built a whole cult of personality around himself, he thought he knew it all but Hosea was there to leash him in. One of many problems was Hosea wouldn't put his foot down to Dutch, because he didn't want to undermine his authority since Dutch was the boss, not Hosea, but not doing so only allowed things to spiral downward more, he opted for a less direct approach and tried to correct Dutch's course, which of course didn't lead anywhere. After Hosea's death, Dutch didn't have anyone to keep him in line and he completely went off the rails which wasn't helped with Micah's influence.
When he stands over Arthur at the end, when he looks down at the man whom he considered a son, he sees only his failures, and the point is driven further in when Arthur tells him that he gave him everything that even Dutch who always sought to have the last word in can't even find the words.
I think he shoots Micah in the epilogue, not to help John, not even to attempt to correct a mistake that he should have corrected ages ago, he shoots him because he sees only himself in Micah.

As weird as it sounds, quick and short character deaths are in my opinion, so much better than the long dragged out ones. It makes perfect sense. Just because someone u love or care about is dying it doesn’t make they’re always gonna die slowly and you get to say goodbye to them or try to save them. Quick deaths of important characters shock the players/watchers/readers. But it is much more realisitic.

Hear me out: Dutch's relationship with Hosea, Arthur, and Micah is like cheating. Hosea and Arthur were his two most trusted brothers but back in Blackwater he may have realized he wants to be something bigger than just what their gang was. Hosea was wise, represented rationality and wits most of the time- when Hosea died both of those came running out fast.
Arthur is Dutch's conscience, a now long ignored 'girlfriend' of Dutch. And Micah, well, Micah is that "new sexy girl", Dutch's instincts, Dutch's ambition. Dutch wanted to be a great man of sorts, in a gang leader sort of way. It shows when he carried out his short term plans, everything with a bang with little thought about keeping his family safe.

That part about Bronte, that's probably one of the most defining moments. Dutch calls him everything that he himself would eventually become, and he gives the deciding vote to Arthur, who at that point was still one of Dutch's biggest Yes-men. Also, it was John who was the first to say "You should have never gone after Bronte" when things fell apart at the bank. “Our time has passed John....” Is one of the saddest quotes in the series. Dutch finally realizes the world is changing and his kind have no place in it because he refuses to change with the world.

U gotta play smart and change with the world. Dutch would be a excellent politician with his charisma. Their gang should have step into politics and start to earn money the right way. Robing people in broad daylight is not the way to go. They need to transform from outlaws to mafia and dig claws into politics.

Yeah if there were an RDR3, thats where it would take place. Unfortunately, I can’t see a third game, (especially another prequel) as much as I want one, not feeling dry. It couldnt take place after RDR1 either, since the wild west is over. Sucks.
I bet if Rockstar knew in 2010 that an RDR2 was gonna happen, they would’ve made the RDR1 story more flexible for sequels and prequels.
