Shiny Metapod was the very first shiny I ever caught in Pokémon Crystal back in the hayday. It was during the bug catching contest when suddenly a sparkly organge banana shown on my screen. I had no idea what Shinies were, complete and utter cluelessness but out of sheer curiosity I caught it and kept it. It was only years later when playing Pokémon BW when I began to understand what Shiny Pokémon were.. first thinking they wre introduced then just to later learn they existed all the way in Pokémon GSC where I recalled I caught a Shiny Metapod. When I properly understood what I captured by then... hearing all the sad stories from others who killed their first shiny I really looked back at my little self giving myself a pat on the back with a big GGs. I never ended up using the Shiny Butterfree that evolved out of it though... lol
I have soft spot for Vivillon for being an absolute menace in Wi-fi 3v3 singles in Gen 6. Nobody expects quiver boosted hurricanes to be landing as often as they do thanks to compound eyes and sleep powder enabling setup. On top of that it's probably my favorite bug pokemon design wise too I was particularly fond of the pattern my region had (High Plains).
I had to double check beautyfly having only air cutter as its strongest flying stab suspecting that was only the case in an old gen. No, no it's still that case in current gens.
Butterfree getting it's own pseudospore with a more usable speed stat than spore users typically get was great. Nice to see a pokemon that was so important to ash learning empathy getting a niche as a support option despite major weaknesses. Having an actually reliable Hurricane that can be boosted even compensates somewhat for its mid spatk.

It's straight up worse than Mothim in almost every way (hilariously, that includes bulk. Mothim also has 1 more point of Speed just to rub salt on the wound). Granted, Beautifly now has slightly higher Special Attack (100 vs 94). But Mothim has the amazing Tinted Lens ability, so he'll generally eat harder anyway. Beautifly is my first ever Shiny (technically Wurmple), so I also really love it, but it's just really sad,

Venomoth is my favorite “butterfly” (I was going to justify it by saying it can learn Quiver Dance, but so can Bellossom in recent gens). Still, Tinted Lens is cracked, making Big Buzz virtually un-resisted and is terrifying after Quiver Dance. And since it only needs 2 moves for offense, it can slot in status moves for fast status after Quiver Dance.
I was incredibly surprised to find out Butterfree is not only bad, but specifically bad against Rock. because Butterfree learning Confusion was definitely my game plan for beating Brock when I picked Charmander lol
Beautifly and Dustox are sad cases when it comes to the Bug typing, it's hard enough to get a crumb of usage if you're not overstatted or minmaxed, but they somehow have neither, and they haven't even been glanced at because of it. it sucks because they're really cool designs!

As a Nuzlocker Butterfree's 97.5% accurate sleep and assortment of psychic attacks make it a great Jaigen that usually sees use up to midgame. It's especially good in Kanto with all the poison types running around and can even make for a bomb defusal mon in Rocket HQ if you didn't get a Geodude. That said the lack of stats do keep it out of lategame and endgame as it becomes very vulnerable to crit oneshots and DoT Side Effect KOs.
@@OpaloAzul not to mention with the addition of dark type they had the chance to buff bug type, but ended up breaking it even instead. Bug in gen 1 was super effective against poison and this was switched over to being super effective against dark while poison now resists it. Should also note that poison was super effective against bug as well in gen 1
I will never stop loving Butterfree and using it in every playrhrough Sure I have to give it a crippling addiction with how many X items I give it but thats irrelevant when sleep powder hits :)
Gen 7. My favorite pokemon set ever, CEyes Vivillon with Sash, Quiver Dance, Sleep Powder, Endeavor, and Bug Buzz to ignore subs instead of using hurricane. Never had a better time in comp than getting to 1hp, dancing to outspeed, putting a mon to sleep then bringing it down to 1 and killing it.
I remember as a kid trying REALLY hard to make Beautifly work, swearing to my friends up and down that it has some hidden uses that people just haven't discovered yet and that I would be the one to do so. I was also like in middle school and had no fucking idea what even EVs were so I was clearly way over my head about a vast majority of things in Pokemon outside of "Oh this looks cool/cute".

Would like to see a presentation about controversial uber that dropped to OU (Kyurem B in gen 8, Zama-Hero and Darkrai in gen 9, etc).
Butterfree is like one of the only early bugs that can both serve its intended ingame role as a crutch character AND still remain functional through the rest of the game due to Compound Eyes powder support. That's absolutely worth something, still serving a valuable function even after it statistically falls off. That reflects pretty well in its competitive performance, where it's basically never been great but always at least usable in the lower tiers, where most early bugs drown in the ZU mires

I always like the idea of these extremely early game bugs getting some ridiculous late game moves at level 100. It’s satisfying to imagine a trainer sticking with them well after the early game and being rewarded with powerful moves on otherwise weak mons. (not really related to competitive)
I got a wonderful butterfree sweep in gen 7, i lead butterfree, guy swapped in chansey and got put to sleep. Probably thinking chansey is THE special wall. In any other circumstance they would be correct, yhe few turns it was allowed to be awake, it did some rocks and seismic toss. I got to +6 speed, sp attack and defence, bugg buzz did half. I was like, even I wasnt expecting that, and thus how my sweep happened because this tiny butterfly got disrespected on.
I’m 90% sure Beautifly was only created for the Pokémon Contests in Gen 3 lmao. It was never meant for competitive and now that Pokémon Contests are gone, it’s pretty much worthless 😭
Beautiful did got buff its spatk from 90->100 in Gen6 but like, you don’t need me to tell you how much of an impact this does to it’s viability… None(also the smogon set for it in gen 6 is kinda funny)
Sad part is, Beautifly actually has 100 special attack as of gen 6. They buffed it but it made so little of a difference because everything else about it sucks.
stealth rock made bugs so much worse. pairing horribly with flying and poison also hurts because that's what they end up combined with most of the time. add to that many bug types being pokemon that evolve very quickly and hence having low stats for their final stages and it's no wonder they mostly end up trash. but the thing is the typing itself is not *that* bad (especially when stealth rock isn't present or there is great counterplay to it) - heracross, volcarona, and many of the bug/steel types alllll show that when you give a bug type functional stats and a secondary typing to work with, they can be incredible in any area - defensively, offensively, or in the support that they offer. it's just a shame that they tend to get shafted with bad stats and secondary typings due to pokemon being balanced as an rpg more than as a competitive multiplayer game.... in truth that is the biggest problem with bug types.
To buff bug types, game freak should add a 70 base power move that switches out the user. Would definitely be used in competitive play 👍
