She stole my heart at Wheatland Music Festival. Performed with the psuedo-celts. When she came on Sunday morning, I was at camp. I boogied it down to main stage as fast as I could.
I found this video through a playlist on your channel, which I found from your comment on a video of the Clancy brothers singing Mairi’s Wedding. Thank you so much for helping me find this; I’ve been listening to it non-stop ever since.
Maura your so so missed that voice most gifted to you from Heaven...nevermind your personal beautyful presence& stage attitude...You sing all our Irish notes.. for Us all...your truely a National Treasure...Come Home!! Xx John Co Tipperary
I love that I am Irish, from Irish parents from County Mayo, from a loving family ... from a people who suffered but who prevailed and who learned to sing, laugh and love!
Irish tend to be authentic, rustic, and real, similar to Jewish people. Compared to the more reserved, stiff, uppercrust English type. I'll stick to my Irish, thank you. @mickbrod1
Truly excellent, a gorgeous superlative version … and her singing like “a full-bosomed thrush”. I don’t know about her own performing troupe, but there are members of The Chieftains on stage with her.
Brilliant Singer Brilliant Song. Maura's backing band was non-other than the Irish band "The Chieftains" The band has won Awards and been nominated eighteen times.
My mother, of Scottish / Irish descent, had a voice similar to Gracie Fields. Once I heard her say 'You must FEEL what you sing' This is what she was talking about!
I heard her singing this song in Salt Lake City around 1990, or so, she was with De Danaan and it was first time I'd ever heard the song. Later I bought their LP and have enjoyed it! But, in the meantime, I've found that this is a really old song and probably should be sung by a male voice. But, where I come form, a song is a song and Miss O'Connel's voice is wonderful!
Before my mother was even a thought in my Irish immigrant grandparents' minds, her father used to sing this love song to her mother. Sadly, he died two months before my mother was born (Mastoid) but her mother spoke often of their undying love for each other. His name was Carroll. My grandmother named my mother Carolyn in his honor. She loved this song.

The violets were scenting the woods Maggie Displaying their charms to the breeze When I first said I loved only you Maggie And you said you loved only me The chestnut blooms green through the glades Maggie A robin sang aloud from the tree When I first said I loved only you Maggie And you said you loved only me A golden row of daffodils shone Maggie And danced with the leaves on the breeze When I first said I loved only you Maggie And you said you loved only me The birds in the trees sang a song Maggie Of happy a trance for us to be When I first said I loved only you Maggie And you said you loved only me Our dreams they have never come true Maggie Our hopes they never were to be When I first said I loved only you Maggie And you said you loved only me
Wow, what a beautiful song. Hey, quick question... what's with the last sorrowful verse? Do all Irish songs HAVE to be sad and depressing. Where is that written?
Thanks for the posting, but I've just one further (respectful) suggested correction. In O Casey's play, The Plough and the Stars, the title is changed to "When I first said I loved only you Nora" as the song is sung by Jack Clitheroe to his wife Nora.
Hi Sam. Thanks for posting but I must respectfully correct you re the 'performing troupe.' They are in fact the one and only Chieftains and if you look closely you'll see one of the greatest violin/fiddle players Mark O'Connor playing a mean guitar and the untouchable Gerry Douglas on dobro.
Can anyone help me out here.... There's 2 versions of this song, lyrically. Why? Does anyone know? The Foster & Allen version has totally different lyrics.
I believe the version with Nora in place of Maggie originates in the Sean O'Casey play, "The Plough and the Stars", the character being Nora Clitheroe.
Hi Maura! You used to babysit me in the market! Remember paddy and Dora?! We remember the fish shop... we should write a song about it! When I first said I loved only you Maggie /Dora was our song... hope this is private anyway big big love to you, the brookes, the Naughton’s and everyone else xx
@@stacymorgan4710 Who died, Stacey? Surely not Maura O' Cornell. According to Wikipedia she is still alive, but not performing solo anymore. I heard something in 2019-about her performing on a collaboration called the Atlantic way in Ireland. I'll await your answer. Honestly there may be something I don't know.
I wonder if it would have been better for Maura's career if she had stayed in Ireland and not moved to Nashville. She was not really a country singer. When I heard that she had moved, I thought oh no, stay in Ireland girl. Nashville is no good for you.
GR8 band, Gr8 singer. 'I' would have liked the earlier verses a little lighter. Less mournful. At least a tad up tempo. The last verse could then have the 'change'. I think this O'Casey version is marginally better than "When You & I Were Young, Maggie". For Nora Clitheroe.
This is the first time i've heard this Lady sing . WOW simply Beautiful.
She stole my heart at Wheatland Music Festival. Performed with the psuedo-celts. When she came on Sunday morning, I was at camp. I boogied it down to main stage as fast as I could.
She's very authentic, makes her amazing.

I love her, especially when she sings traditionally.

This is a wonderful alternative to the original When You And I Were young, Maggie. Very moving performance. Very poetic lyrics. Thank you.
My mother, of Scottish / Irish descent, had a voice similar to Gracie Fields. Once I heard her say 'You must FEEL what you sing' This is what she was talking about!
Lucky you! ❤
They had me at the opening blast of the tin whistle - the Maura kicks in so much real soul, the emotion and heartbreak!
@@nicholasjkane Perhaps she has a beloved grandparent who lost his Maggie way too early - I know that feeling too well.
I adore this wonderful singer.
That is Real soul, folks. I can feel the emotion, the passion, the past time.

Miss you Mary ,hope to meet in heaven.
Maura recorded this song with De Dannan in the 80's - the Chieftains doing a grand job backing here
I wore out my old De Dannan tape in my car travelling around Ontario Canada 🇨🇦, brilliant musicians and one of the best singers around is Maura .
The Accompaniment for Maura was done by "The Chieftians" from Ireland , a well known Irish Traditional Folk group.
One of the best.
Just the best craic to be had!!
Those were the days, when talent was much more important than size 6!
The violets were scenting the woods Maggie
Displaying their charms to the breeze
When I first said I loved only you Maggie
And you said you loved only me
The chestnut blooms green through the glades Maggie
A robin sang aloud from the tree
When I first said I loved only you Maggie
And you said you loved only me
A golden row of daffodils shone Maggie
And danced with the leaves on the breeze
When I first said I loved only you Maggie
And you said you loved only me
The birds in the trees sang a song Maggie
Of happy a trance for us to be
When I first said I loved only you Maggie
And you said you loved only me
Our dreams they have never come true Maggie
Our hopes they never were to be
When I first said I loved only you Maggie
And you said you loved only me
Sehr schöne Version
If "by her own performing troupe" you mean The Chieftains, then you are right on.
Fantastic, but hey, Ronnie Drew takes some beating. God Bless and keep him.
