@luc1ferblack on top of seeing there's a market for it, they'll know its somewhat straightforward and people with those skills exist in the VR community. Hell if Dolphin could get that close to an official Steam release, UEVR injector could make magic for VR having the community work on more obscure games while larger UE games have something like "official profiles" from the devs with things like 3D models and perfect setup available from the source with low effort and commitment from Dev companies. You get one good all-rounder from the team on the profile creation and its a done deal. Dev wins, emloyee wins, Steam wins, Preydog wins, Gamers win.

The injector just shows you how little effort devs needed to make games playable in VR. They delibrately flipped switches to disable VR. The Unreal Engine supports VR. All they really need to do is allow hooks so that people can mod the games for VR and let UE do the rest.
It wouldn't surprise me if the next thing is these companies sueing PayDog to block his mod.

UE4 and 5 have VR support built into the engine. This mod is configuring what's in the engine to actually work properly, as the developers of the games that don't support VR never enabled it and configured it.

    • @VRnamek
      @VRnamek 10 місяців тому +6

Tbh, these games are made to look at great as possible on screen - and that usually means bad VR performance even in top cards. They would need to tweak and test extensively throughout the game to release something properly supported - and that may be more work than the niche VR market may deserve.
But who knows, maybe lots of these formidable big full games is what is needed to grow the market until devs feel like officially supporting it

    • @randomcheese1719

@@VRnamekthere are scalability settings right there in the engine. As the mod shows, it's not too much to enable VR support for the games.

Things like STALKER 2, Bloodlines 2, Cyberpunk 2 and the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot with full rendered IK, motion controls and two handed weapon handling. The potential is endless. The "flat gun" issue is likely because the gun model is rendered on a separate pass than other geometry to avoid it from clipping into near geometry (for example when you stand close to a wall).
It's a trick that many games use.
It might also have been rendered into a texture and then rendered as a flat rectangle mesh on top of existing frame.

Great video Beardo, and a very netural and insightful take on the hype. So far I've only tested Abzû and a few fighting games, but the mod already blows my socks off. To be able to take a game I love, click a button, and to "be there" in a VR headset seconds later is crazy. Another positive effect this mod might have for PCVR, or VR in general, is that developers and studios might finally see the thrill of playing a 3rd person game in VR. IF you build a game like Tales of Arise, you have an overworld and 3D models of everything. Including VR support should be easy to implement, and will immerse the player so much more than a flat VR-game.
Also, camera controls and world scale in the mod is some of my favorite additions. Being able to make a fighting game look like figurines figting infront of you, or getting to inspect your favorite locations or characters is so cool!

I've been watching those and then leaving comments telling people to temper their excitement as it is not quite that simple. I've only tried 4 or 5 games (Bioshock 2 and the remastered version - don't know if that counts as the same game in people's minds - but neither one worked) and only one worked well and one worked ok. The other three (or two, depending on how you look at it) did not work at all or crashed immediately afterward. I just upgraded my System from the VR minimum to a mid range spec, I went for a 4060Ti as I am a self funded retiree and the higher spec GPU's are just priced so crazy as to be a rip off rather than because of the technology.
I am impressed with how good the Native games are for the Q3, let alone to be able to play virtually everything on my PC just blew me away/
Half Life Alyx just amazed me so much I couldn't believe it and I only had the minimum spec at the time and was why I upgraded a little $1500 is a reasonable upgrade as there was no way I was spending $2500 just for a GPU as then the CPU I would need was also over double the price of the CPU I went for.
Last time I upgraded it cost me $2500 for everything and that was pretty close to the top spec at the time for a single GPU system.
I am really looking forward to the next five years as we are now at the base level for what VR should be and from the way people react to my Q3 after trying it out, I know many more people will be getting into VR now thanks to the Quest 3 and with the Air link or Steam VR ability, it's now where I was hoping it would be 20 years ago :)
At least the Q3 is not a huge disappointment that Duke Nukem was after that long wait.
SOmethings are worth waiting for, now it can only get better as well as things we may not realise we want or need will get added.
Walking platform is my top of the Wish List and at a price that I don't need to Rob a bank would be nice.
I would pay $1500 and maybe even $2000 if it was a good and multip person unit, not one of these silly ones that need special shoes as then everyone that uses it needs their own shoes.
We are now so close to the future of what we see in Sci-FI movies, the treadmill is the final step :) pun intended.

    @CaedenV 10 місяців тому +1

    Wow! Just wow!
Tried this out, and there is absolutely adjustments to be made for each game, but that it works so well out of the box... It's kind of insane!
I only have a couple of ue4 games, but the basic flow to get a game working well is
    1) choose the rendering method. And note that changing method can crash the game... But restart and try again, and save your profile once you get what you like. Seems like most 2D centric games need native, and 3D centric games need one of the alternate rendering options.
    2) disable filters. Things like chromatic abberation in jedi fallen order, or the tilt shift effect in octopath traveler was a must as these are often 2D effects drawn on top, or are dependant on 2D assumptions about the view to apply, so it doesn't render the 2nd eye in a coherent way.
Some of these are disabled in the game settings, and some are in the tool settings.
    3) adjust your zoom/scale for the headset, and zoom/scale for any in-game gui.
... And really, that is about it. The rest is really just preference.
That said, the performance issues are real. I'm running a 3090, and high settings did slow things down even for the older games I have. You are effectively rendering the game 3-4 times. One for the on screen display, one for each eye, and if you have the mixed reality app open then it is doing an entirely different render. So stopping the mixed reality preview helps. Setting the game to a small window helps. Turning off filters in the game helps both rendering and 3D weirdness. But having the frame rate in the headset drop too low is nausia inducing, so keeping the in-headset above 80fps is a must. A beautiful game that makes you puke isn't helpful lol.
Still, so much fun! Tomorrow I'm going to try and see if I can get it to work with some ue 3.x games as that is most of what I have. I imagine games like xcom would be fun in vr!
I really hope we can get something like this for other rendering engines! 3rd person games like final fantasy, or horizon zero dawn would be neat! This really brings a whole breath of fresh air to my VR experience! It's funny to me that the November windows updates and steam vr fixed so many of the tracking issues that prevented me from doing. And then Microsoft announced the end of vr Windows support and development lol. Now we get a tool like this and... Damn... I feel like this is what vr has been missing all this time!

To be fair it's not the same, because officials things need to be near perfect and plug-and-play or people will rage, when unofficial solutions can be complicated and unperfect but still accepted.
It's the reason some games have a near perfect VR mode implemented but ask you to enter an "unofficial" command to activate it... Can't rage against the studio if it cause problems to unofficially modify your game.

It seems to be a bit game dependent but the OpenXR Toolkit is working with several games as well. I am using it while playing Stray on the Pimax Crystal @ 120Hz. I am using the Pimax Smart Smoothing feature which does frame generation from 60FPS up to the 120FPS so it is important to stay above 60FPS in game. Using the OpenXR Toolkit to turn on Eye Tracked Foveiated rendering as well as the Nvidia resolution upscaler I can reliably keep the frame rate above 60FPS regardless of the scene. Without the toolkit, I was dipping into the upper 40's. It is really amazing to see all this come together to create an absolutely incredible and immersive gaming experience. It honestly lived up to the hype which seems a bit rate these days! Great video, thanks!

What other games are you finding work/don't work with the eye tracked foveated rendering? I was a beta tester for the UEVR mod with the Crystal but gave up on trying as most things were crashing that I tried. Maybe praydog fixed that in an update since I tried.

    • @nickg2691

@@jonathantate6048 So far the only one I have tried is Stray. It seems pretty stable as I haven't crashed yet and it gives me a FPS boost from 47 to about 55 then I use the resolution scaling to 80% to get me to the 65-70 FPS mark and Smart Smoothing does the rest. It is always hard to tell if DFR is actually working but I am looking as far down and to the corner as I can and I cannot see the reduced render quality.

I've only dipped my toes in with Abzu, since it was rated as "potato pc" level in the UEVR Steam Winter Sale game list and my RX 6600 XT is perhaps just a bit above that these days. Also it cost $7 AUD, so not something I was going to lose sleep over if I couldn't get it to run.
Took a while to get it running mind you, and following the game specific instructions in the discord was the only reason I had the time (took me about 30 minutes including getting UEVR and making an exception for it in my Antivirus software).
It required running the game in windowed mode, increasing all the settings to ultra, selecting the synced sequential mode in UEVR, deselecting the "ghosting fix", turning the water reflections to 0 with the console and motion blur to 0 with the UEVR slider.
Setting everything to Ultra in the games graphics settings to resolve lighting issues (default is "High", but the light under the plants wasn't working at all, making it a very black game) was a bit counter intuitive and not something the testers and all other players had encountered (there were a couple with the same issue). That took the majority of the time I spent getting everything running.
Abzu in VR was excellent. Third person adventures focused on the audio visual experience are definitely a good fit for VR. Only issue is that there's some pop in, as it's culling some of the fish (not all, usually the schools) when they would be outside a flatscreen perspective, but surprisingly it's not completely immersion breaking.
I'm certainly impressed, both with the experience and UEVR's potential.
UEVR is actually amazingly streamlined for a mod this powerful, feature packed and broadly applicable

Comment one month ago: It is important to say that you need to use DirectX 11 with Dying Light VR on Win11, I couldn't get it to launch with my Meta Quest 3 until I forced it with Dx11 then, DL started full VR on the first try. It uses Chrome Engine so won't work with UEVR. I haven't tried it as I found out after a 2nd playthrough and will give a long wait before the VR playthrough.

After about two days I finally got it working with the quarry which is what I wanted. By the way, it said it worked well, but my experience was it looked good for a moment, and then it was completely unplayable with a 4080. And unfortunately. I think I’m gonna wait until more profiles come out because I can’t lose all that time again lol. I think it’s going to be great but it definitely doesn’t just work.
